- Join us as we chronicle the history of PlayStation, from the launch of the original console in 1994, to the PS5 launch in 2020.
Correction: The PS3 didn't require PS Plus to play multiplayer, that requirement came with the PS4.
We're on the cusp of the PlayStation 5’s launch, so now is a perfect time to look back at the journey that led Sony to this moment, and celebrate PlayStation's past.
In the video above, Lucy chronicles the history of the Japanese tech giant's foray into the gaming space, from the wildly successful launch of the original PlayStation back in 1994, to breaking into the American market, to the rapid growth over the last 25 years. From hardware launches, revisions, and partnerships to peripherals, and of course, the games that we love on PlayStation, we delve deeply through the history of the console family.
She also stops to examine the evolution of the DualShock controller, from its humble beginnings to its reinvention as the new DualSense Wireless Controller. We recently had hands-on time with it, and it's a marked improvement on the DualShock 4. PlayStation 5 launches on November 12 in the US, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea, and on November 19 in the rest of the world. - Ігри

born in 1992, don't remember when i got my playstation, all i remember is my mom helping me with crash bandicoot, then one day i came home from school and she was playing instead of watching young and the restless. And from that point on it was no longer my playstation it was our playstation. lol i never beat any of the crash games she beat all 3 of them for me.

I bought for last xmas ps5. Aint gonna sell. But keep it as a collection of ps console. Anyway, i think its not worth it for now, to buy ps5. Not many games coming out, also better wait for the newest ps5 models (slim, pro). By the way the ps4 era is not other.

I think they are restocking the ps5 soon at best buy, walmart, amazon, b&h, and gamestop. That is where you can get a ps5, but you need to see when they restock it.

I have PS2, PS3, PS4 in my room. Last month I got PS5... But my PS1 is very special to me. I'm so emotional. Year 1997 I remember my grandfather gave me the best Christmas gift ever, the PS1 when I was 9 years old. RIP grandpa I love you so much. I love my PS1 very much, my first video game console. I promise I'll treasure it forever.

@@campkira Hmm is that aimed at me? I have had every console since the NES. I can assure you that PS+ was not required for playing games online on the PS3. That requirement wasn't added until the PS4.

Ah man...I remember when the PS One came out. I got my first one as an open box item at Best Buy in 1997 (I think like Spring...cause I was still in 6th grade). I was so stoked to get one, it came with a demo disc that I played through like 50 times lol. I think everybody did back in the day. The funny thing is that I still have that same system to this day, it's more of a sentimental thing than anything. I remember my mom got it for me, and she passed away almost 14 years ago now.
Sorry about your mother. The ps1 is/was the greatest video game console of all time. The ps2 only sold well because the hype/success of the ps1.

I’m 24 and got a PS1 when I was 5, PS2 when I was 10, PS3 when I was 14, and was able to buy PS4 at launch myself when I was 16 and PS5 at launch this past November. PlayStation forever!
I remember getting the PS1 and P2 for Christmas. Still, to this day, have great memories with every Playstation console.

Great summary! I'm born in 1992 and owned a PlayStation 1 since 1998, followed by a PS2 and PS3. Just the PS4 never catched me, but I will definitely be back on PS5 😍

I won my PS1 in an xtreme games comp and received it Christmas Eve in 98. My family hid the package and surprised me on Christmas day. Great year! FFVII was my fav game for a long time
Videogame quality and purity really started to slow down and not be so *consistently* groundbreaking or have as many huge tech leaps after 6th gen.
5th gen and early 6th gen when Dreamcast was still around were Industry peaks.

My very first console/game was a PS1 along with Spyro 2. I remember that day like it was yesterday. I was at my grandmother’s house and my dad went to his childhood room and grab a PS1 out of his closet. For some odd reason he gave it to me. Weirdly enough I remember knowing what it was without touching a video game ever but I “knew” what it was.
I haven’t stopped gaming since then. From PS1 to the upcoming PS5, I’ve been a PlayStation fan since very first console. I like Nintendo as well but PlayStation always “felt like home” for me when it comes to gaming.
The PlayStation seemed special back in the day. Everyone I knew had it, except for my older brother who went with the Saturn.
You must've lived in a metro area. Saturn was limited release.
Online play was free on PS3 and didn't require PS Plus, that was one of the main reasons I got it over a 360.

Took me a long time to get a psone out of pure loyalty to Nintendo and waiting on the n64. After it got delayed AGAIN and after a friend of mine offered to sell his cheap with die hard trilogy, wipeout, ridge, destruction derby and a few great demo discs, I caved in and never regretted it! Still a great looking console imo

I remembered the time when I used to play PS1 with Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, Syphon Filter, and Ace Combat 3 with my dad when I was 4. The best time there was, but it was burned in 2005 because of the accident. I can say is that PS1 is the best Console to me.
PS2 was the Titan of my PS era, played Tekken 5, Burnout Revenge, Black, God Hand, God of Wars 1 and 2 and Burnout Dominator. Truly a wonderful memories with PlayStation. Thanks, Sony and GameSpot

It's amazing how mainstream gaming has only been around for less than 30 years. That's a long time, but not in the grand scheme of things considering where video games started (primitive console systems of the 1970s; arcades of the 1980s). It amazes me how far we've come and how far things will go as technology just keeps advancing. The idea of a Star Trek Holodeck may not be a reality, now, but it's coming. Imagine gamers 100 years from now will be commenting on how primitive the PS5, and XBSX were...
I remember playing resident evil in 1997. That one part where the dogs crash through the stained glass windows gave me a huge jump scare

People need to understand that playstation is about nurturing and trusting the process..they pushed innovation in gaming with every next console and dared to dream..the ps5 is at the right place of a revolution because all that hard work and nurturing will show its fruits now which will pave the path to the next generation after the ps5 the true console that gaming in general has dreamt for !!!

The ps2 was so good I played it as a kid in 2008 i was 7 years old and it was my dads before he gave it to me. It was my first game console ever and left a lasting impression on me.

Kinda sad to be a collector, everyone in the comments is talking about how nostalgic the startup screen is for the ps2. I don't feel this nostalgia as much because even though I played it all the time back then, I still play it all the time now as if it never died out in the slightest for me.

All I remember playing back then on my PS3 Slim was Haze, Modern Warfare, GTA 4, Minecraft, Rogue Warrior, and alot more.

I am pretty sure Online Multiplayer didnt require subscribing to PSPlus. That was one of the benefits PS3 had over the Xbox360. Am i wrong?
You didn't need ps plus on the ps3 you are right they didn't implement ps plus requirement until you got a ps4
Bought the PSX in 1999 and the first game I ever played on it was Marvel vs Capcom. Ah fun times. Then spent thousands and thousands of hours playing Breath of Fire 3, Legend of Legaia, Breath of Fire 4, Castlevania SOTN, Jade Cocoon, Tekken 3, Crash Team Racing, NFS 3, NFS 4...

The dual analog controller didn't have vibration.
At no time was PS+ Plus required for online play on the PS3. In fact, anyone can still play online on PS3 for free today.
Does anybody remember in which event did we, as gamers, first see the Playstation? Was it the European Computer Trade Show of 1994 in April or was there an earlier event?
I bought the PS1 and PS2 in the local mall at a Software, Etc. (I believe). No lines, no bots buying online...just walk in, say "Hey", pay, and walk out. So much easier back then. It is weird to think that the first three iterations of the Playstation gained more and more capabilities, yet the PS4 still cannot play music (much less rip music) from the internal drive. :P
The Nintendo 64 was my first console, then I got a ps2 and have been with PlayStation ever since.
