DVD players were really expensive at the time so you could get a game console and a DVD player for cheaper in some cases than just a DVD player. It was literally a game changer.
I made the same comment! Saying that the software library and bulkier design were the reasons for the insane sales is not really correct. The GameCube had one of the best software libraries of any system as well. The PS2's included DVD player was super significant.

Sony entering the market with their own system was actually due to a backstab from Nintendo. Sony intended to enter the market with the Nintendo Playstation, where Sony proveded the CD drive part of the system and create exclusive games for it. DEV kits were already available and some prototypes still exist.
The project was basically finished when Nintendo pulled the plug, thinking cds were inferior to cartridges, and developed their side of the system into the Nintendo 64.
Sony had put so much funds into already that they decided to also complete the system and compete with Nintendo with their disc based 3d game console.
It is hard to say who won. Both created an entire own side of the gaming market that grew alongside eachother and coexist without either side losing sales when the other does well, or gains from it the other falters.
There WAS a big loser though: Sega was completely pushed out of the market is just a decade, now reduced to a 2nd party dev studio for mainly Nintendo.
what about xbox existence in between all this?
@@adityagautam7992 the Xbox wasn’t a thing until a decade later, it launched along side the PS2 and GameCube
Nintendo fan here,
I have no problem saying Sony won the 5th console gen. Nintendo was about 2 years late to the party and struggled to even fully support their system.
It is “best selling game system ever at the time vs the system that sold less than its predecessor” . Clearly the first one won.
@@dstinnettmusic absolutely. In my opinion ,even if the new Xbox is more powerful, you just want that thing that the playstation gives you . These small things that make you wanna buy it
Ughh. Sony and their exclusives
Something you didn't mention about the PS3, the reason it launched with such a high price tag was they had physically integrated a PS2 inside of the system so it had the ability to play PS1, PS2, and PS3 games natively with hardware (not through software emulation)
This allowed for full backwards compatibility for all of their titles but drastically increased the manufacturing costs
As they released different Iterations of the Fat PS3 they slowly removed these features until it was strictly subpar software emulation
People like to say they want backwards compatibility but if they really did they would have to pay for it, and history shows people don't want to pay for it...
The pricing actually makes sense now but only for people who did not have either a PS1 or a PS2, which most of them did.
I didn't know that PS3 could play 1&2 games. Wow.
it was actually the blu ray drive that jacked up the price.
@@snakeoo and the backwards compatibily so you and john are both correct. Oh yeah and don't forget the millions of ports.
The original Xbox 360 was extremely stripped back compared to the PS3, It didn't include things like wireless networking, you had to buy an attachment for it etc when you added up those costs it worked out a worse deal than the PS3 from a purely financial stand point.

PS3 was the best console jump to date. Built like a tank with wireless controller, massive performance increase, HD resolution, could play blu rays films, had an SD card slot, could store all your photos and videos on it.
It was a one stop shop entertainment hub. Every console since has been more of an incremental increase.
Ps2 felt like a much bigger increase, but agreed definitely diminishing returns on every generation after
ps3 was also the least succesful, cause it was too expensive
@@amossutandi i wouldn’t say it was too expensive, but the reality was that most people still didn’t have an HDTV when the console launched, so not only did you need to spend the $600 on the console but another $2-5k on an HDTV, they were extremely expensive at the time.
Apart from blu ray, the xbox 360 had a wireless controller, 1080p instead of 720p, a hard drive bay, xbox live, and a shop for all online games. It also had an expansion slot on the controller.
@@amossutandi yeah Xbox 360 was so much better
Just a note on the PS1. It was also a middle finger to Nintendo whom had backed out of a deal with Sony for a disc add-on for the SNES. To add salt to injury Nintendo then backed one of Sony's rivals.

the ps4 was bad, due to the graphics being 4 years older than the ps4 itself
5:12 They actually released a controller with 2 analog sticks in the PS1 era. However, it was late enough in the console's lifespan that many games didn't support it. But the PS2 is what made the sticks standard.
I have both
There are more inaccuracies like PS3 doing 720p max. It was 1080p although almost no games would utilize that because the PS3 wasnt strong enough. The home screen did just go 1080p, like some 2d games or simpler games. The cringiest one is where he says the PS4 made fully open worlds possible. I wonder what Skyrim (PS3) is than. Comparing two different TV's and blaming lack of color on HDR is criminally incorrect. I don't know why this man has the need for these weird and tecnically unjust comparisons. It's just wrong. First lesson if you compare two things = compare as equal as possible. smh. PS4 had HDR too. 4k on PS4 is a more complicated story but missed entirely (PS4Pro).
@@tjeerdtigchelaar1371 yeah literally ps4 pro is like another console. is 4k native and made a lot of differences sony wanted in the first place but the xbox was released too soon.
MechWarrior 2 on the PS using the "controller with tits," as my brother used to call it.
Indeed I remember renting Ape Escape and then getting home, booting it up… and finding out I need a DualShock controller 😭
Some additional points:
_PS2_ - Was also a functional DVD player. DVD players were still sort of new at that point, having come out a few years prior. So the fact that the PS2 could also play DVDs was a useful feature. It worked fine with a controller, but you could buy an optional remote accessory.
_PS3 & PS4_ (since there is a lot of crossover points) - Mentioned the Blu-ray compatibility, but there actually was a lot of demand for the PS3 in the early days as a relatively cost-effective Blu-ray player (again, remote as an optional accessory) that could also double as a gaming console. It was a better deal than some of the cheaper early BD players that lacked some key features (I think internet features was a big one, internal storage was another, as that was used for some BD Live functionality). You touched on it with the PS4 bit, but it really was a bit of a nightmare to develop for, as I understand it. Because of this, a lot of games released on it performed worse than their X-Box 360 counterparts, in spite of the console being technically more capable. Skyrim was a notable example. That was pretty infamous for turning into a slideshow after some hours of play on a given character. Also, being a bit pedantic, but the PS3 technically supported up to 1080p gaming. It's just most of the games weren't capable of it, or defaulted to lower resolutions for performance reasons, and I'm pretty sure a fair few games on the PS4 were also sub-1080p render resolution. You can turn on the PS3 with the controller. The console had to be in the standby mode, which was standard so long as the switch was set to on at the back of the console.
One final point though:
_"I bought every Playstation Ever."_
*PSP and PSV cry in the corner*
Those were pretty impressive little machines that blasted their competition (DS/3DS) out of their water both graphically and in terms of sound and just plain looked more premium. How good the games were was of course up to the developers, and the DS/3DS both had dual screens as features, and the 3DS had the 3D functionality (that a lot of people didn't use anyway). Pretty sure the original PSP is still well appreciated for its use as a portable emulation console to this day, even if Sony did do their best to make it much harder than they needed to for people to use it that way.
And that's discounting spinoffs, like the PS Go, and PSX (Which was a DVR & PS2 combo device) but let's not get carried away.
The PS3 was really underused by many developers because they found it troublesome to program for all the specified cell cores etc.
Those who bothered made thinks that looked like The last of Us or the Killzone games. Those games look amazing even now.
Finally someone who knows what a psx is and the others

There are tons of incorrect stats about these consoles in this video. I get this guy has money, but if you’re going to sink 20k to unbox vintage hardware, at least check that your script is accurate.

This video brought back fond memories. Two things I've disliked over the years though(and it's my only complaint)is how the price at this point has far outpaced inflation(making it more appealing to serious gamers and folks with disposable income) and the lack of backward compatibility after the original PS3
The inflation is affecting them, why'd you think they would increase prices? They have employees to feed and don't forget about the people at the top
It is discretionary income but yes. I agree with you.
The backwards compatibility is the only thing that sucks about PS. The newest Xbox can still play original Xbox games for crying out loud.

Back in 1995 i remember earning only $136 per week doing a full time traineeship paying $50 per week in board and saving many months for the PS1 which cost $589 AU at that time. It was an incredible experience, demo discs were so awesome when you couldn't afford a full game regularly. Eventually my pay increased and so did my collection. Toshinden, Wipeout, Tomb Raider, V rally, Crash Bandicoote, Street Fighter Alpha, ESPN extreme games, Ridge Racer Revolution and so much more. The PS1 was definitely the most notable psychological leap in gaming to this day. No other console had made me feel like what the PS1 did coming from the 16 bit era. Although i also really like the PS4 design. Personally i feel the original PS3 was the best looking design to date. I really dont like the PS5 design at all and really hope the Pro model is completely different.
Gaming was always expensive, nowadays when you look at custom gaming PCs the cheapest is 5K euros and even that barely can utilize things properly, you often have to swap things let me not rant further so next to that cancer a 250 euros PS4 pro or 5 is a no-brainer investment.
As for retro stations PS2 is the most modded and most popular system still out in the world. That speaks major volumes where modern game stands at, basically nowhere so PS2 is still the most popular alternative.
I mean, I used it as a gaming station, multimedia station, even going online as on a PC running Linux and bunch of other things and still play games on it and watch DVDs and home movie made discs, stick a multitap on it, play 4 players, paralel port it with other consoles, multiplayer all the way with it even today, for that price it did more then it was priced for. It's basically like a part of your family that will accompany me till I am gone.

Great video, though I believe part of the PS1 story was overlooked entirely. The making of the PlayStation was a joint project between Sony and Nintendo, the intention being to create an SNES CD-ROM player. For one reason or another though, Nintendo backed out of the project, leaving Sony with most of a console already finished, and the rights to it as well. They completed the project and ended up becoming bigger than Nintendo, with the PS2 being the best selling game console of all time.
Didn't Sony find out Nintendo was also trying to do a project with someone else which lead to the collapse of the contract? I might be remembering wrong.
@@gobineko8121 Possibly, I’ll take a better look into it soon.
Wasn't it Philips?
@@wilsonmpesha904 Nintendo announced that Philips will be producing a CD version of the SNES, just a day after Sony went public and announced that they had a deal with Nintendo. It was in 1992, and the people at Sony considered not investing in the gaming console business at all, but the guy who developed the sound chip was persistent and eventually became the father of the Playstation. PS1 was the most powerful gaming console for just a short period of time, because Nintendo launched N64 in 1996. PS1 was launched in 1994, but only in Japan, it came to Europe and North America in the late 1995. Sega Saturn was just as powerful (32 bits) as PS1, and it arrived in EU/NA few months before PS. Regarding Sega, Sony didn't wiped out Sega. Sega wiped out Sega. Saturn was more expensive than PS1, as well as than the more powerful N64.
@@markomarkovic5729 Sony created the sound chip for nintendo at the time. This was what made nintendo initially partner with sony to create the Play Station (it was always going to be called that but sony had to combine the two to playstation).
And yes sega killed sega however it was way more than just the price of the saturn that did it. Sega of america and sega of japan were basically at odds with one another.Sega of japan wanted a brand new console. Sega of america was doing their own thing with the 32x. Then there was the infamous shadow drop of the saturn (i think it was this one) which pissed off every dev.
At this point sega was practically dead. The dream cast was like a zombi console or it could have been like a person on pcp who gets killed but doesn't realize their dead due to the effects that pcp has. The dreamcast could only slow down the inevitable at this point. And the ps2 just put the final nail in the coffin but it was actually sega themselves who bought the coffin and put most of the nails in as well as dug the dirt and lowered themselves in.
The PSP deserved at least a mention. That thing was waaaaay ahead of it’s time.

Wrong. SEGA Genesis offered online gaming before any other console. - dual shock was actually released before PS2 launched, late PSX models had it included in the box
- PS3 actually can go up to full HD (1080p)

One thing you missed about the Dualshock controllers were A) The PS1 got Dualshock in 1998 and B) Dualshock 2 implemented pressure sensitive buttons, so if you were playing GT3, you could control the throttle far more granularly or in MGS2, you could prime a shot from your tranquiliser gun before firing.
Sony truly did lead the way with the games consoles and functionality. In fact, the PS2 was so successful, it was kept manufactured until 2014. It was THAT successful.
Another thing about the PS2 is that in certain regions, you could output at 1080i. Gran Turismo 4 was one of the game that could support that.
wow, there are some things you mentioned that i've never heard before, so cool.
Was about to say the same regarding Dualshock..also kind of a let down he didn't highlight the DualSense as it's the difference maker in the current gen consoles..
Also no mention of the PS4 Pro. I know he said he wouldn't bother with every variation but the pro was the only variation of the console that actually had more advanced hardware for better graphics and higher resolution. Although games that truly used it fully were never made due to the need for PS4 compatibility.
Gamecube had pressure sensitive controllers actually, but the PS2 arrived on the scene first and the Dualshock added an extra stick, but gave Sony the ability to imbed rumble functionality as a response to Nintendo's bulky rumble pak, which was more important I feel, I don't recall that second analog being used much at all(Ape Escape comes to mind and not much else). I don't think SOny leads much in terms of console innovation in terms of play control tbh(they do seem to come up with their own solutions based on what others do, and do it better), I'd give that to Nintendo, but they do lead in terms of console functionality imo.
