Im So Glad Since I Began Using UA-cam Almost 3 Months Ago Where I Learn New Things & Started Watching More Channels. Also Graphics Has Gradually Improved Since 1980!
In 1981 I was stationed at the Navy's first Air Traffic control station using computers to combine multiple radar signals from 'further' locations to create a much larger area for aircraft surveillance. They had multiple workstations as well as the Controller monitors all hooked up. When the Airspace was returned to the FAA at night there wasn't much to do but the civilian contractors maintaining the code and equipment had loaded ZORK (text based) for something to mess with. I personally could create my own 'maps' on a Monitor which wasn't being used as well as fake targets which would be used for training purposes. I decided to make a race course and would used the keystroke commands for heading to guide the target through the course. My superiors just looked and went on . . . . They appreciated my eagerness to understand how the new systems worked. :)
incredible as always flatlife! Subscribed and addicted to your channel, i enjoyed a lot this video! My only complaint is that you didn't include mario 64 or zelda ocarina of time. Sure, these games were far from first in 3d gaming, but no game before them nailed the controls, create such massive and dense worlds, use high-tech (at the time of course) gameplay and graphics and be of course freaking fun. Arguable of course, that is my humble opinion. But still.
I was even surprised that they didn't include metal gear solid games. They were some real achievements especially mgs2 with the locked 60fps with those beautiful graphics and story.
Because open worlds were become so popular. Providing immersive storyline in an open world cost much more than in a linear gameplay. I rather prefer linear storyline than thousands of illusive choices which actually do not change too much...
Great video! Have you done an evolution on soulsborne games yet? I think that’d be a great video seeing as how the Elden Ring is coming soon, and it looks like BOTW dark souls!
A stunning journey from basic, pixelated sights to highly detailed and immersive 4K worlds is illustrated by the growth of video game graphics from 1947 to 2023. This progression reflects advances in both technological and artistic design.
Fun fact: Nolan bushnell actually created Chuck E. Cheese, and he actually made it because he wanted an arcade for children to hang out and play while eating pizza alongside with animatronics and the rest is history..
How the hell can he forgot Prince of Persia??? It was the most legendry and revolutionary game! Prince of Persia 1989 and pop 2 Even the prince of Persia trilogy!!!
Eventually, video games will get to the point where graphics are so realistic, that it seems like you are playing as the main protagonist of a live action movie.
The game graphic do not need to be realistic for you to believe you are the main protagonist of a movie. For that it's all about immersion, but graphics might help a bit
It is interesting that the adventures of Hellblade, i.e. Senua, were not even mentioned, even though the Unreal engine, its graphics and the way it was made, or its real-time motion capture presentation would have been distinctly unique and fitting here.
I remember playing Test Drive on the Amiga, which was 3D racing in 1987 and F/A-18 Interceptor the following year, as a 3D flight-sim. Super simple polygons, but still 3D and way earlier than '91 or '92. Pretty sure the parallax effect was there as two layers in dual playfield mode earlier too.
ok but how do you go from squiggly lines to hyper realistic games containg 4k resolution included with huge franchises and character icons. Evolution is a mind-blowing thing
Ray Tracing in games really did give us the improvement in graphics we all wanted. We are now getting the tech scaled down to even work on our phones. Imagine VR games in a few years..
Great video, I'm reliving some of these games in my head now :) Parallax effects were introduced in the 1980s when 16-bit machines were powerful enough to handle the graphics requirements, like Shadow of the Beast (1989) by Psygnosis. IBM PCs were not up to the graphical standard of the Amiga at the time. That came later when dedicated graphics cards emerged. Vector 3d games were also around in the '80s. See the original Star Wars arcade machine, or StarGlider on the Amiga. I wouldn't describe parallax as a 2.5d style, although it's obviously a hybrid solution before we get to full 3d. There were plenty of isometric games that used this style, including The Sims, as mentioned in the video. Defining a 'real' 3D game isn't easy. Virtua Racing was THE 3D pioneer in the arcades. Doom was a revolutionary 3d style game in terms of presentation, but it's a 2d game in how it plays. There's no real 3rd dimension to interact with in the environment, and the enemies are all 2d sprites. (I think) Quake or Dark Forces was one of the earliest real 3D FPS games. Once games were using polygons to generate the images things were more properly 3d, so systems like the Playstation or Saturn were the real turning point here.
Parallax scrolling pre-dates 16 bit computers, some games on C64 used them. 16 bit computers allowed more layers to be calculated improving the effect. The first 3D rendered games on consoles really began on SNES games like Starwing which had a RISC based accelerator (the SuperFX chip) fitted into the cartridge allowing objects to be rendered using polygons instead of sprites.
@@darthwiizius I did not realise that about the C64. I had a Spectrum :) You're right about the FX chip, that really pushed things forward. I meant turning point in the sense of mainstream/popularised. It was the following generation of consoles which really took it mainstream with native hardware.
@@pd77uk Yeah the extra processing and memory really did help with parallax effects, on C64 it was typically a front layer and a back layer of very simple backgrounds where the 16 bit machines threw a middle layer and added a lot more detail. SNES really took it again by being able to render 2 separate grids simultaneously, one full resolution and one low resolution allowing for additional transparency effects in games like Kirby 3 (or was it 4?, it was a long time ago). Fun fact about the SuperFX chip: It was developed by a UK team and originally offered to SEGA who rejected it. The team later went on to develop the Gamecube GPU and then were bought out by ATi just before launch. ATi were then bought out by AMD so they could get into the GPU market.
What was that clip with the girl saying “don’t fail me now” with the glowing hand before she went flying through those crumbling ruins? I can’t find it on google
Starting in the 1980s we had arcade machines, Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum Amstrad CPC and as the years went by in the 1990s we had the PS1, N64 and PCs and Dreamcast. By 2000 we got the PS2 and Xbox Original and GameCube.
I remember myself as a kid, 8 years old, looking at Madagascar looked so realistic on the Playstation 2. I just couldn't believe. Now look at how far we've come.
Oh man, I remember playing "River Raid" on the "Atari 2600" back in the 90s with my dad and having a blast with mom watching confused like "the fuck are they so competitive and hyped about?". I also remember that my "Atari 2600", for some strange reason, came in a box that had Rambo holding an RPG as the cover art. Don't get me wrong, it was badass, but it felt weird for such an (back then) underwhelming game console to have such a cool guy representing it.
Fast forward to 2023 and Unreal 5.2 has improved in scale in a way that is mind-numbing . The square miles you can render is staggering. For modded games how did you miss Fallout 4?

It is good to see how far gaming has come
The evolution of video game graphics is so amazing and great video man :]
Request to Flatlife: I want a extended video of the history of other companies consoles like NEC,Bandai, other 1st generation console companies,LCD portable companies and more!
This request is an extended video
Me to I want that video
Did anyone else click the video just because the thumbnail seemed to suggest that there was an arcade cabinet in 1947?
Yep. Dislike the video and report it. Sick of these clickbait liars. Over the smallest thing
I don’t know what was more perplexing, his pronunciation of Diablo or that he thought it used parallax scrolling. Did he have a head injury?
2018 was best year in gaming. Rdr2, GoW and Spiderman.
2007 and 2009: hello there
this video is just... I cant even say. All of flatlife's videos are just amazing

Really good presentation brother I didn't skip a second you will be very successful.
I remember getting battlefront bundled with my ps4... jumping up from a ps2, my God that game looked amazing
The 15 year period between 1979 and 1994 was astonishing in terms of progress. The likes of this will never be seem again.
What made me mindblowed is that these graphics are better than my eyesight 😲.Looks there will be a time when these graphics are better than our real world
This was such a big help in my school project thank you

Im So Glad Since I Began Using UA-cam Almost 3 Months Ago Where I Learn New Things & Started Watching More Channels.
Also Graphics Has Gradually Improved Since 1980!
You are absolutely talented!
Keep it up!
Try doing evolution of Disney
Yes plzzzzz
Yeah
incredible as always flatlife!
Graphics are getting better but storylines are getting worse
Because open worlds were become so popular. Providing immersive storyline in an open world cost much more than in a linear gameplay. I rather prefer linear storyline than thousands of illusive choices which actually do not change too much...
When a video-game has better graphics then your eyes, then you know it’s 2050.
01:38 Respect to people that made OSU in that year
Flatlife you are underrated you deserve 1M subscribers
I’m really surprised that you didn’t mention Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart.
This channel has the best animations
it such a shame you didnt mention any of rocksteady games, they had incredible achievement too, including a standard for open world super hero games
This is my favorite channel ❤️❤️❤️
Great video! Have you done an evolution on soulsborne games yet? I think that’d be a great video seeing as how the Elden Ring is coming soon, and it looks like BOTW dark souls!
I just learn this in my school.thank you Flatlife
Can you do the evolution of The Matrix Franchise? Please because I loved the movies, even The Matrix Awakens game!
Literally every UA-camr when 2022 starts, nice video man
This is great
how tf did you watch the whole video in 18 seconds

Much innovative content and this is very informative video i loved it ❤️❤️
How did he miss BeamNG Drive? The most realistic simulator in the world.
A stunning journey from basic, pixelated sights to highly detailed and immersive 4K worlds is illustrated by the growth of video game graphics from 1947 to 2023. This progression reflects advances in both technological and artistic design.
How about evolution of racing games?
Hon'ble mention: NFS Most Wanted
Fun fact:
Nolan bushnell actually created Chuck E. Cheese, and he actually made it because he wanted an arcade for children to hang out and play while eating pizza alongside with animatronics and the rest is history..
How the hell can he forgot Prince of Persia??? It was the most legendry and revolutionary game! Prince of Persia 1989 and pop 2
Even the prince of Persia trilogy!!!
Good resource for my diploma work, thank you so much!
sure graphics became better and better, but gameplay has been declining.
Yes
But is it actually, or is it just peoples nostalgia? I think it is both, but honestly mostly nostalgia
Udeserve more subscribers and views, my guy!
Eventually, video games will get to the point where graphics are so realistic, that it seems like you are playing as the main protagonist of a live action movie.
The game graphic do not need to be realistic for you to believe you are the main protagonist of a movie. For that it's all about immersion, but graphics might help a bit
🔥🔥LOVE YOUR VIDS FLATLIFE HUGE FAN!!!🔥🔥
IM JUST HERE WITH MY NOTIFICATIONS ON WAITING FOR THE CONSOLE WARS VIDEO HOPE THEY DO IT SOON😄😄😄
Your Animations are soo Gooooood!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You only play games ?
3d Maze was my first Polygon title in 1986 , that was my first 3D game !
Made it for Acorn Basic
ok but how do you go from squiggly lines to hyper realistic games containg 4k resolution included with huge franchises and character icons. Evolution is a mind-blowing thing
I made a powerpoint on this and u were my main source. thanks!
The biggest video from @Flatlife so far well done dude
Ray Tracing in games really did give us the improvement in graphics we all wanted. We are now getting the tech scaled down to even work on our phones. Imagine VR games in a few years..
5:49 That is not game play from the original arcade version of Donkey Kong... that is from the Atari 2600 port.
You forgot to include all the great games on computers in the 1980s, such as the entire line from Sierra Online (which was an innovator in graphics).
Another video about evolution of video game graphics 😮😮😮 Haven't seen videos like this before......
Flatlife you did it again. A good video for big brain bois
You gotta give a lot of credit for that Gran Turismo designer who was only home 4 days a year, because he created a legendary racing game
I like the intro How that old computer turns into a modern one
Man, wtf, I was here at work and went to see the video, the audio was too loud! my boss noticed and even called me names! Thanks Flatlife, thanks...
Great video, I'm reliving some of these games in my head now :)
Parallax effects were introduced in the 1980s when 16-bit machines were powerful enough to handle the graphics requirements, like Shadow of the Beast (1989) by Psygnosis.
@@pd77uk
Yeah the extra processing and memory really did help with parallax effects, on C64 it was typically a front layer and a back layer of very simple backgrounds where the 16 bit machines threw a middle layer and added a lot more detail.
Thanks for the bonus fact! I love finding out new little details like that :) @@darthwiizius
4:54 the fact that pacman went right "through" the blue ghost
What was that clip with the girl saying “don’t fail me now” with the glowing hand before she went flying through those crumbling ruins? I can’t find it on google
7:45 this is just beautiful.
I love your videos so much information ℹ️
Starting in the 1980s we had arcade machines, Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum Amstrad CPC and as the years went by in the 1990s we had the PS1, N64 and PCs and Dreamcast. By 2000 we got the PS2 and Xbox Original and GameCube.
Good job man
😃 The evolution of video game graphics is so amazing!
Underated channel
This is increadible I love it these are great videos
16:38 the hair animation still needs work m8
It was moving upwards 😅😅
Still notice a lot of flaws but looks amazing 😉
Great video! Let’s see Evolution of The Elder Scolls in the future?
There was a Space War arcade cabinet, I knew a guy in the late 80s who had one. It was huge and it kicked out heat like a space heater.
I didn't knew that I'm interested with this until I realized that I didn't skipped a single second of this video.
Fast forward to 2023 and Unreal 5.2 has improved in scale in a way that is mind-numbing . The square miles you can render is staggering. For modded games how did you miss Fallout 4?
How do *human faces* look, out of curiosity?
Do they still leave a bit to be desired?
I hope the Cathode Ray Amusement Device 2 drops soon, been waiting for a sequel for so long now
