Yes I agree. I am a parent of two children ages 11 and 14. I have allowed them to be on their electronic devices for too long. So I have bought my daughter a pair of roller skates and my son is in Taekwondo. It is a significant difference already. Now my daughter desires to take up dancing!! Guess where those devices are at? Best decision ever!! I can't believe the lack of socialization going on with children. No sports pick up games, no neighborhood kids playing together? Catch snakes, bugs lol...chores? Personal responsibility? Kids seem very moody, bored, anxiety? ADHD? No structure, no boundaries. Your kids will appreciate you and your rules. Mine are in their 30s..❤
I am part of Gen-Z and last year I recognized that spending so much time on social media and watching TV everyday was having a negative impact on my mental health. When I was spending time on my phone, I began to notice that after say an hour had passed, whichever problems I was facing at that time in my life suddenly felt so much worse than they had felt before the screen time. The time is coming to per attention to the negative effect of social media on people especially kids, children. We should raise the discussion and take public and individual concrete actions to tackle this social media issue if we want to live better.
This is an important topic, but i think another thing to consider is WHY we spend so much time on social media, is it a distraction from the hardships of life? Ie: spending time scrolling after a long day of work, relieving stress? ex: feeling burdened by student loan debt, price of housing, war, presidential candidates? Yes, social media can be a big issue in mental health but maybe it wouldnt be that bad if people didnt feel so anxious and worried about other things. We need more peace in our LIVES. We're too stressed about other things so we abuse social media.
48 year old Gen-xer here who is a full time Realtor. I feel justified now in my anti-social media position. When I'm on it, I have to evaluate how it negatively impacts my mood and thoughts.
In the UK, kids are set homework on their phone. The school has WhatsApp groups for the year for the kids to discuss things. I mean it’s so integrated into their whole life now.
I’m sorry I’m gonna be so blunt with y’all. So for me personally growing up, I am apart of Gen Z (for those who are wondering I am 22) and I think it’s irresponsible to blame TikTok for a mental health crisis. That’s not only going on in America but globally I’m going to tell you my story and why I was part of that statistic of people. Who wanted to die my story starts with the loss of my grandfather in 2013 not only was the Internet going on and the world was booming. I was also struggling with accepting that my grandpa had cancer stage four and it took a massive toll on me while I did love the Internet and was obsessed with it. I also really cared for my grandpa and watching him slowly die killed me. It wasn’t until 2016. He passed away Because of the cancer and that’s when I became more depressed, and I couldn’t stop harming myself because I was afraid I was going to lose my grandmother even to the point where I knew I had to hospitalize myself out of my own safety to prevent me from doing something that I couldn’t take back. As a 22 year old, what makes me so depressed and anxious is how lousy and lazy these people who are 10 times older than me have completely failed us, but I knew who my grandfather was and I know what a proper man looks like somebody I can respect and listen to, he was my rock and my heart, even though Still mourn for his death. I hate when y’all will literally look at everything else to blame because kids are depressed and anxious.. it feels like y’all aren’t even listening and that’s why children are depressed and sinking into technology. it took me so long to find proper help and support and I was one of the lucky ones had somebody to depend on. Now that I am older and investing in things that really benefit me, I can now speak for those children the same children who are suicidal and depressed. I can now be there beacon of Hope.
@@janedolores79 I think most feel pressured to fit in or be successful. We see those things as a basic human activity. So if people dont fit in or have something to feel worthy of pride, they get depressed and shut themselves off.
I am so glad that you brought up the latest research about social emotional education in the classroom. I am an elementary schoolteacher, and I have long thought that we’ve taken away so much playtime from children that now we need to compensate with social emotional education. This has been my gut feeling from what I’ve observed among students. I’ve also noticed that when we share about our feelings, it seems like students tend to want to express the negative feelings, and when asked why they’re feeling that way it is usually very superficial reasons that I don’t believe we need to take time to discuss. It makes total sense that they just need to get out and play more and face adversity. Could you share where I can access some of this research you were talking about please?
No ones gonna talk about the societal collapse of the nuclear family structure and lack of community in person we have anymore? The secularisation of society among other things leading to this… this is what started my anxiety as a child. Because one of my parents’ family structure was ruined, the trauma continued. How about look at that
I agree with many things he says. Nevertheless, I believe it is important to teach our children (and adults) to name their emotions and be able to share how they feel. It’s a part of developing emotional intelligence, regulating emotions, and deeply connecting with people. There were moments in this interview when I thought most people wouldn’t agree. I am surprised by some of the comments here.
I am year 1992 so I am very happy to be a 90’s kid , I played with stones and wood when I was little and also when I was 13 years old , we did not have all this shitstorm on the internet. I had a phone yes, but it was different. Now I am 31 and I also feel more anxious and more unhappy because if I stay to much on my phone I compare my life to others , even if I know that it’s not all true ! Even if I know that I have all I actually need in my life and I have to be grateful 🙏 but also I think its not to late to go less on social media or to change things. We can do this. We have to speak about it.
A wonderful podcast. Your guest defined what I went through the last decade when all the grandkids and their parents had “smart phones “ . I watched young parents give all the responsibility for upbringing to their kids phone and apps. I found if you challenge these now teenagers that they wouldn’t know how to react because no one’s ever challenged them in person before and they all freaked out. Their mom would come over my little child. I was born in 1960 and recess was the best thing we got to run around and as boys we used to play a game called kill the guy with the ball which means you ran around with the ball and waited for somebody to catch you and tackle you. That’s the type of give-and-take that all children need to have, but I guess since the cell phone was invented, I don’t think that’s gonna happen. socialization of humans is a big step and I’m so glad that my parents allowed me to be free range or before the term hovering parent
However, in terms of suicide prevention, studies show that talking about it and openly asking questions about suicidal thoughts is beneficial and it helps reduce suicide rates…..
I think you have misunderstood them,Dr is against naming emotions minus giving solutions. You see even suicide prevention has that part of safety plan(solution)
My son's elementary school requires tablet use (Chrome Books). They give them tablet assignments to work on in class and give required weekly homework, English and Math, in video-game format. I am so concerned that these protocols set up by the school are not the best idea for my young 7-year-old child. I feel helpless because this is a required part of the public elementary school curriculum.
This is powerful...I feel anger at this situation. Im 64, my children in their 30s. Thankfully they just missed all this. The young people I hire are not prepared for life. The young ladies have spent more money on hair, nails, eye lashes, new phones, nice cars...come in late, xall off several times..then they are being evicted for not paying rent. Our company policy is no cell phones in business areas (Healthcare) and they walk around with ear buds in talking to themselves...of course on the phone in their pocket. Its very difficult to see these young folks as they are not on a path to success.
I am glad that this conversation to me is so personal to grow my technology habits & to spend more quality time with my loved ones! Especially listening to this podcast especially on my celebratory trip is just something so close to me! A good podcast to enjoy your coffee over too! Keep up the great work for the rest of this year Jay 😊❤❤
30 year old, feel like old Gen Z/young Millenial. It was nice having my flip phone in middle school because I could ask my mom to bring me things that I forgot or tell me who would pick me up. But using my phone in class was enforced, like if the teacher saw it, they took it
This really helped me in so many ways. So many things need to be done to help our kids. I am going to check out the sites and see what I can do to help this mission. Thank you
SAVE TIME, READ THIS Here are the important things mentioned in the video along with the time stamps: * Jonathan Haidt, a researcher, professor and author of the book "The Anxious Generation" is interviewed by Jay Shetty about the mental health crisis affecting kids [00:01 - 01:00]. * There has been a global synchronized collapse of mental health which began around 2012 and 2013 [01:00 - 02:00]. * This mental health crisis is much larger than anything seen before and it is affecting most kids [02:00 - 03:00]. * Jonathan Haidt argues that the cause of this crisis is the rewiring of childhood caused by smartphones and social media use [03:00 - 04:00]. * Kids themselves are saying that social media is bad for them and they feel trapped using it [04:00 - 05:00]. * There is disagreement among scholars about the link between social media and mental health but Haidt believes the evidence is strong [05:00 - 06:00]. * Haidt offers solutions such as delaying when kids get smartphones and making schools phone-free [06:00 - 10:00]. * Parents can advocate for phone-free schools by talking to the school principal and there are resources available to help them do this [10:00 - 12:00]. * Haidt also suggests that age verification should be mandatory on social media sites to prevent children from being exposed to inappropriate content [12:00 - 14:00].
Im interested watching the podcast although i didn,t understood too much what they said.because i cant speak English very well im here just to improve my English but over all i like all podcast Jay shetty.good luck
I have always said as a millenial we got to see both sides of the coin with real life and phones. I 100% stand by the fact that smart phones are not good. My daughter is 6 and i dont allow tablets, smart phones, and she needs to play and socialize. I dont distract her at dinner, outings, and other things by throwing a tablet in her hand. In turn she is very creative, very social mannerable, she is very emotionally regulated. She knows how to articulate her feelings and wants better than most adults. And on the topic of being over protective we had to take so much shit as kids because our parents made us. Being around family members who were critical in a unconstructive way, taking away our voice, because we were kids, and not supporting us in thinga that were our genuine interest. So i try to to balance a bit of what i was given in a healthy way, but also provide exposure for nurturing.
I think to say for parents.."it's really hard" it's a cop out. Yes, it's hard to set boundaries and not give your kid a phone and stick to it. Its hard to take your kid to sports practice 2 night a week, it's hard to take them to a park on Sunday afternoon. It's hard to sit at the table for dinner and cook together once or twice a week. The groceries can even be delivered. ❤ make this normal again.
I am 22 years old and I very much agree to what it’s been said here, as I was given a very first version of ipad at very young age around 12, I wish I was at least told or been taught of the use of it, I did not know how to utilise so I played games instead. Now that I reflected, I do not blame my parents as they tried as hard to make me happy, as well as to educate me, but I do think it was better to given restriction or make kids understand the best use of technology, not being controlled! Nice contents.
I’m certain social media doesn’t help.. but I think attachment problems within the family are the main problem… social media is filling in as the attachment figure just as a substance can… I would refer to Dr Gabor Mate or Dr Gordon Neufeld’s work
How can anybody compare playing video games or watching tv as the same as being addicted to social media/ a smartphone ? Really ? Come on … did people have a tv in their pocket 24/7 or a video game in their pocket ? It’s not just young people believe me … this is all generations mental health suffering … anybody that has an addictive personality, whose even slightly insecure or lacks confidence will be affected by the toxicity of smartphone addiction and social media. It’s great this dood is talking about it . Thanks 🙏
I Iike what he’s saying, although I have to say my 9 year old is 100% bilingual thanks to social media (you tube) we only speak Spanish in my country, and he speaks writes and reads perfect English thanks to all the videos with subtitles he watches, I wouldn’t been able to do that myself
Borderline happens in the puberty both genders & what you are mentioned about how teens react in that time frame both genders is exactly how energetic their hidden gifts are awakening, but if you are unaware how to channeling such awakening through their biological process without blending energy healing, meditation exercises & take time off social media, make you sick & feel off balance.. You need to control your mind, be in tune with your heart ( listen ) stay still,be alone to start loving yourself by yourself to build self esteem, to accept yourself,to like yourself without requiring the validation & approval of others! To build character, resilience, intuition, strength,etc..I am working in a project:!I AM! For a summer camp for the youth interfaith as a volunteer service & will use !I Am Positive Thoughts! & Energy healing (Reiki) with simple meditation exercises they can use as a routine,to help with their internal chaos manifesting outside their bodies..Thank you for validating my inner knowledge with scientific evidence, which is require doing spirituality practices, must be balance between science & spirituality.. 🌺🙏😘🌸💗💕
1. stop companies/ads/notifications from taking your attention. your attention is so valuable. give it to things that matter 2. don't take the easy route. re-humanise. more time with real people, communicate in real life instead on the phone. 3. time in nature. we are further away from nature. go back to nature. walk slowly. no headphones. notice the beautiful world
I'd argue that age verification for access to porn is currently absurd. You can just press a button. I would have liked for the interview to dig deeper into the mental health effects of early exposure to hardcore porn for boys, and its link to addictive behavior and depersonalization. I once tried to block all porn from my phone and couldn't be done. Even google blockers are just ridiculous. We should be protecting boys from this as well. Reliable and unavoidable age verification should be the norm online.
kids will get on social media at 13 if they want to - there is no way to fully enforce this stuff. society needs a more fundamental change. people will always rebel against rules imposed on them and find a way to circumvent.
My experience with my American friends who are parents is they many times straddle the line between parent and partner. For example texting their kid a grocery or to do list or vacation selfies or for comfort during a difficult time ect. Not often have I heard of them texting about scores on tests or academics in general. The phone is an emotional support animal for many adults and the child is simply the one who has the biggest stake in their parents' stress and breakdowns. Getting the phones out of school should be the number one priority for Fall 2024. Perhaps by getting our priorities straight these kids will find they not only like not having that leash around their necks, they actually do not need it as much as the corporate conglomerates would have them believe.
I want to say a couple things, when I was young in the late 90s, early 2000s, my mom was very vocal about stranger danger Online, I would never use my real name or age, I would always use a Male name (see username lol), and I was never allowed to use social sites, like club penguin. I feel like this moral panic around the internet has waited way too much! And this was before smart phones! This was only when we had a family computer in the living room.
This is just sad....Gen Z has no social skills, work ethic. It seems they had minimal mentors/role models, minimal structure, minimal rules, minimal boundaries. Where were the parents? How does this get turned around? 5 year olds with screens. Unbelievably sad.
Its so easy to go onto tiktok and scroll your day away. I try to avoid it. My partner and her dad are addicted to their phones and social media. We can be on vacation and they are so disconnected from having a conversation or enjoying th3 moment because they are consumed by their phones. We are talking about a 40yr old and 75yrs old. Its not just kids. Social media is a drug. How do you point out to adults to stop or point out they have a problem.
*I love the grounded reality of this channel!!!* Retirement took a toll on my finances, but with my involvement in the digital market, $27,000 weekly returns has been life changing. AWESOME GOD💙💙💙💙💙
Getting verified on social media would be a fantastic way to build credibility and trust. However, I wonder about the implications in places where expressing opinions can lead to serious consequences, being verified might put a spotlight on individuals that could expose them to risks. 😔 While verification is a badge of authenticity, it can also make users more visible to those who may wish to suppress free speech...

I believe social media is very dangerous I am 41 and it has most definitely effected my mental health
I have had to take very long breaks from it
It's very sad I wish Facebook was never invented to be honest it stresses me out glad I grew up without it so it's easy for me to take breaks more people need to be outside connecting with nature and exercising I believe social media is addictive and they have done that on purpose to keep us disconnected from ourselves families and our lives
It needs to be stopped and a warning put on it
I grew up being playing outside most of the time and yes I did have a Nintendo but it was a positive influence on me not like social media being a negative influence on others and making people think that they need to compete with one another and all the drama and stressed that it brings
I hope people wake up and see this all before it's to late

I’ve been sniggered at for not using a smartphone at my age but I’m happier lady since I got my little Nokia for out n about with zero apps /Wi-Fi .. yes I’m on UA-cam on my iPad .. but that’s kept strictly at home .. it ain’t in my pocket = not addictive! We are of a small minority not using these toxic social media platforms … I’m just hoping one day the world will cotton on to our way of thinking . Rant over !!
thx to u 😇👏🏼
I just realized ever since i started listening to ur podcasts I stopped scheduling psych therapy smh. I think ur podcasts helped me sm cuz its such an easy access 247 available therapy for everyone
I remember when I was un primary school and we used to go and play in the patio with the kids those were one of the beat memories
The time is coming to per attention to the negative effect of social media on people especially kids, children. We should raise the discussion and take public and individual concrete actions to tackle this social media issue if we want to live better.
Extremely excited to watch a new podcast!! Thank you for your work, it is an incredible impact on my life ❤️❤️
Thank YOU! ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you JAY for this conversation with PROFESSOR JONATHAN HAIDET, looking forward to gain knowledge & energy to tackle current anxious generation 👍❤

THANK YOU SO MUCH for this episode! I sent it to our school, to teachers to look at. Love from Prague! And please, more of this kind. thank you
I’m sorry I’m gonna be so blunt with y’all.
I agree that social media is the symptom, not the cause.
Well so, why do you think Gen Z is so depressed then?
It's really up to us to put the phones down and take a break from social media.
Jay I love how you changed the beginning of encouraging us to subscribe- totally worked on me even though I’ve been watching your content for years.
You are both very I spirational for us. We are a newlywed couple and also started a UA-cam channel, greetings from Hungary. :)
No ones gonna talk about the societal collapse of the nuclear family structure and lack of community in person we have anymore? The secularisation of society among other things leading to this… this is what started my anxiety as a child. Because one of my parents’ family structure was ruined, the trauma continued. How about look at that
Instagram and Facebook deleted from my phone. Feeling more optimistic for the future. Thank you for sharing
Thank you for this ❤ it’s all so true and this needs to be shared with every parent and teen out there
I am year 1992 so I am very happy to be a 90’s kid , I played with stones and wood when I was little and also when I was 13 years old , we did not have all this shitstorm on the internet.
I tried to post this on my Facebook and it was immediately taken down by Facebook.
The power is in the mind.
Thanks Jay
My son's elementary school requires tablet use (Chrome Books). They give them tablet assignments to work on in class and give required weekly homework, English and Math, in video-game format. I am so concerned that these protocols set up by the school are not the best idea for my young 7-year-old child. I feel helpless because this is a required part of the public elementary school curriculum.
Our school is actually mobile free school and we always complain about it but now I get it why they implemented it. And I'm happy with it.
Men in there 30 are also very affected by porn
Yes. I totally agree. After listening the podcast, I got the mind-blowing idea.
I been fighting for this , I’m so tired of seeing my daughter coming back from school sad. Telling me school feels like Yale (cárcel) 😣
I am just so conflicted about all the information thats presented by the internet. I am not even sure how to be anymore
Thank you for this interview. This will help me to raise my daughter who is 4 years. Hi from Moldova
i just been watching this on YT and commercial pop up.... UNLIMITED SOCIAL MEDIA FOR ONLY £10!.... crazy.... and so sad.
Thank you
Amazing interview. Thank you.
I have no children and I’m glad after seeing what happened to children with smartphones and tablets.
SAVE TIME, READ THIS
Here are the important things mentioned in the video along with the time stamps:
* Jonathan Haidt, a researcher, professor and author of the book "The Anxious Generation" is interviewed by Jay Shetty about the mental health crisis affecting kids [00:01 - 01:00].
Had to recoment on this podcast! Really have so much inside this podcast episode! 😊
Thank you for listening!
the most relevant and interesting expert ever. thank you.
LET THIS BE HEARD
This man is doing Gods work.
Many GREAT points were made!
The best episode so far 🙆🏽♂️
15 minutes in. EXCELLENT interview.
Anxiety is a real though, I am an adult now but still get anxious of social situations a lot
First time watching your content and this was an amazing podcast. Keep it up! I will definitely share this and check out your other podcasts
This is a great topic. You may want to dive in more.
Wowww fantastic interview and content! I completely agree about school free phones!
So far, this is a very educational video, and i think with my kids being as young as they are, i can take a lot from this ❤
Respect to you sir. You speak so much sense.
I’m certain social media doesn’t help.. but I think attachment problems within the family are the main problem… social media is filling in as the attachment figure just as a substance can… I would refer to Dr Gabor Mate or Dr Gordon Neufeld’s work
I loved this interview, full of wisdom and quite awakening
Thank you for watching!!!
This was a great convo
🌺🙏😘🌸💗💕
Them ls, bs, gs, ts, is a huge problem.
Mostly the ts.
LGB is fine with me, but I draw the line at the T.
1. stop companies/ads/notifications from taking your attention. your attention is so valuable. give it to things that matter 2. don't take the easy route. re-humanise. more time with real people, communicate in real life instead on the phone. 3. time in nature. we are further away from nature. go back to nature. walk slowly. no headphones. notice the beautiful world
This is so well put together
Very Insightful!
Thank you so much!! It's very important information for all people in the world 🙏👏
Thanks for watching!
I agree. Even if they have to go to the library 😂
Love your video Jay Shetty
Amazing podcast, please create a clip’s channel 😊
Great topic as always ✨❤️✨
Unbelievable, Facebook does not allow me to share it 😠
Seriously??
SOCIAL MEDIA.
Excellent pod cast.
Glad you enjoyed!
Loved this!! ❤
*I love the grounded reality of this channel!!!*
Retirement took a toll on my finances, but with my involvement in the digital market, $27,000 weekly returns has been life changing. AWESOME GOD💙💙💙💙💙
I'm in a similar situation where should I look to increase income? Do you have any advice? What did you do ? Thank you
Thanks to my co-worker (Alex) who suggested Ms Maria Angelina Alexander.
She's a licensed broker in the states 🇺🇸
Any specific *guide* I'm in Georgia how do | go about this?I'm interested how can I get in touch with her please 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Great to see you guys talking about her, she changed the game for me.
this country better not EVER go to phone free schools BEFORE we go gun free. because students NEED phones because they’re sitting ducks.
Amen. I'm just wondering what America this dude is living in?!
Thank you
Great information!!👏🏾👏🏾
Getting verified on social media would be a fantastic way to build credibility and trust. However, I wonder about the implications in places where expressing opinions can lead to serious consequences, being verified might put a spotlight on individuals that could expose them to risks. 😔 While verification is a badge of authenticity, it can also make users more visible to those who may wish to suppress free speech...
