Mr. James, what is that small blue rubber bit you used to smooth out the silicone. The name of it please, would like to buy one for my next project. Or if anyone here knows the name of it please can you respond. Thank you 👍
I’m here in an attempt to rescue my husband’s diy shower disaster yesterday. I wanted to cry this morning at the state of it and it’s taken me three hours to remove his efforts. Bless him, It looked like the dog did it, blindfolded.
Thanks mate, I now feel more confident to silicone my shower tray. I removed old silicon using window scraper as you suggested. The tip to use the blue corner thing - genius! I have one of these lying about from my plastering jobs! Other golden tip was NOT using your finger tips as you immediately transfer bacteria onto the new silicon. Will definitely tune into your site for my next plumbing challenge. Cheers!
OMG Thank God I watched this!!! My shower has been leaking for 6 months (into the garage below) so I've not used it for six months, had to have baths instead.... But I spent all day cleaning and bleaching the shower today -- and tomorrow I was just gonna silicone over the old silicone!!! I didn't think to remove the old stuff! Thanks so much for the tip.
I've already finished most of the job last night, but not the silicone. Thought I remembered correctly, and I did according to you, but that finger causing problems with mold is a new one for me. Thanks from "Across the Pond".
Thanks very much for the tips. Been putting this off for a year but today following your tips at last I have got all the old stuff out and cleaned it up ready for the silicone which I hope to do tomorrow . The clean edge tool looks a good idea so I purchased one. A tip for others a good newish paper scraper also slices through the old silicone and a screwdrier that fits nicely between the tile and the shower base is good for getting out bits that didnt come out with a pull.
Guy is an absolute legend. Brilliant video - straight to the point no messing around banging on endlessly and even a bit of humour and personality to go with it. Super channel !!! Subscribed instantly. Keep up the good work bro 👍🏼👌🏼
This is the video I needed! Concise and precise and exactly the info I need. Thanks for sharing and extra thanks for keeping it quick and easy to understand.
This looks a lot better than spending an hour scraping at scabby old bits of silicone with a Stanley knife and blade :D I'll have to clean up my act next time I clean up a shower/bath. Thanks James, you the man
This is so educational, right to the point and straightforward! Thank you so much, I'm attempting my first silicone of a shower tray in a caravan today! Wish me luck 😂
I’m doing the same. Will attempt this on my shower tray. His video gave me the confidence to attempt this. I’m tired of cowboys coming through and leaving a disaster in their wake 😞
We’ve got a natural stone shower and the silicone seems to start going mouldy within 6 months, I have to replace it twice a year. I use the silicone smoothing tool so no “spit on finger” job. Any tips to prevent the mould. (We clean the shower weekly). Great vid btw. 👍
Thanks for this!! I've ordered the window scraper tool plus some square things to smooth the silicone. As soon as they arrive, I'm getting it done!! Thanks for the video and advice.
Good tips. I already tried sealing without removing the old silicant. Didn't work. Waste of time and money. This time I have removed the old silicant but not scraped away the excess. Now I'm off to B&Q for a window scraper and one of those smoothing tools you used. I would have used my finger and made a right mess. By the way, I don't mind the banter. Because most of it was at the end. I could enjoy it knowing that I didn't have a hundred more videos to sit through because this one had answered my questions. Mind you I have to admit that at the beginning even the word "hello, I'm John" had me saying to myself "I don't need your name or an introduction to the video, I might have tons more to watch yet'.
Thanks for the tips , didn't have the nice silicone former so improvised and used an old gym pass card , just cut the corner off . Well it worked ......not saying it looked as professional as yours but , im happy with it :-) . Maybe might part take in a Peroni or Birra Moretti myself ....i think i earned it .
Live and learn , another valuable tip. When removing excess silicone from the edging tool with toilet paper make sure you put the messy paper into a container or a plastic bag. Dont put it on the floor of the shower tray whilst you carry on working. If you have a small putty knife ( looks like a small paper scraper ) you can use that to take off most of the excess silicone on the edging tool and use it to fill in the gap further along the shower tray.
I've found that if you spray the low flat seal beads (where water sits) every year with white wine vinegar and water (60/40) it never goes mouldy. Thanks for the tip on the plastic disk. Gonna make one. I was always using a wet finger and always got in a reeet mess.
Just moved house and the shower tray silicon is atrocious. All messy, blobby and black mould growing in it. Can't wait to do a nice smooth finish! 😊 Thanks!
Alright PP!! I have considered in the past having a t-shirt made which says "silicon sealing does not scare me" but to be truthful it still brings me out in a sweat so maybe not just yet.... Window scraper with Irwin blade all the way for me, though not seen that retracting version before. Smooth. Then bit of chemical remover if needed, then meths (mostly for cleaning...) then new stuff. Formers much better than finger as gives good decent sized cross section. Take it easy!
@plumberparts what would you do about sealing the base of a curved glass shower cubicle sliding door? (Quadrat cubicle?) Would you sealant it from the inside? Or the outside? Ours was done from the outside in clear and it just showed a build up of crud behind it straight away. I have just removed it all but im wondering if it should actually be siliconed in at all
Been looking for a good video to show me how to do this thank you. I have a similar shower try to the one in the video with a dip in it where we stand :-( its on a riser kit any videos or advice how I can support / resolve it.
The new Fugi V set has a guide that helps the profile move neatly over grout lines. I've not tried it yet though to know if it really works - I've only just ordered the set.
I'm going to install a new shower tray and enclosure this weekend. I'm using a fugi 5 kit for the silicone. What size do people recommend a use on the fugi blade for the shower tray ,6,8,10,16? Also the same question for silicone the shower enclosure panels?
Thank you. Please would you do a video on sealing a bath tub. I have been told you have to fill it full with water to eight it before sealnt is applied. Is this true?
for everyone asking, it looks to me like hes used dowsil 785 white bacteria resistant, good stuff i find its the only one that lasts without molding again quickly. you can buy this from mosy diy stores, screwfix b&q ect
how do you suggest doing corners. clean finish with the silicone tool but the corners i find can look a bit dodgy if i dont go over it twice. tips?... great quick video thanks!
Good video @plumberparts BUT I found that there is a 4mm ish gap between tray and tile, full of silicone. I'm led to believe you shouldn't silicone on top of old silicone.. but digging it out of this gap is hell.. help!
Look up Charlie DIYte, he did a video on sealing showers and in that fits an experiment on just that. Upshot is if the silicone is in good condition, clean and degreased then it should be fine. He also gives some additional tips to make a really good seal. Also you don't want 100% contact for the sealant right in the corner so add to allow for movement, so that may even help you.
Would you seal the tray and the verticals at the same time? if so how do you stop the Fugi smudging the other bead...? Or is it best to allow one to dry and then apply? Or will this join be an area where issues may develop in the future? The Fugi kits come with little wedges to stop grout lines messing with the seal profile - Should these be used or does this create a place for water to gather..As you can probably tell I'm going out of my mind here....Sort me out with a professional view.
I've read that you should use methylated spirit to clean the area after removing the old silicone and before applying the new silicone is that correct?
I'm thinking to not apply silicone to the inside where the frame meets the shower pan. When I removed the old silicone lots of nasty water ran into the shower that had been collecting inside and under the metal frame. By sealing both sides, the water has nowhere to go and just sits inside the frame rotting and making mold. Yes the frame has holes drilled in the side for water escape but they are drilled half way up, what good is that? The holes probably let more water into the frame than out. The water draining out from under the frame runs inside the shower so I see no harm in not sealing the inside. What do you think about that?
this is the tip, I've read recently you should seal the outside of the metal, not the inside to allow drainage (only along the bottom, you should seal the inside of the vertical metal to tile join, I hoped to find out more about that here, but he didn't even show the tile to metal vertical seal
When Grouting a shower for the first time , should the joint between the shower tray and tiles be grouted or left open to receive more silicone ? Also the same question regarding the vertical corner joints ?. Many thanks in advance
If the shower tray has an upturn that has the wall sheet on top of it, this joint is sealed as part of your waterproofing process. The joint between the bottom of the tiles and shower tray should not be sealed! It should have a 1.5mm gap unless the shower base has drain recesses moulded into it. Grout is porous and you get some water behind the tiles. Seal that bottom joint and it can't escape. That leads to water damage outside the shower enclosure and mould growth at the silicone, as seen in the video.
What do you think to a quick spray of washing up liquid and water before using the forming tool. I have always done it and find it makes the clean up easier with less of the thin film either side of the joint, some people though say you shouldn't do this. Any thoughts?
I am ashamed to say I use a wet finger.. I've done this for years and was taught it also when I was an apprentice. I never knew those formers existed until watching your videos. Next on my shopping list.
I did my shower tray week and did a neat job, but have noticed it’s leaking I checked the tube and it’s dowsil 796 the stuff for windows & doors would this be the reason even if it’s got no gaps and it still looks tidy?
LakesLee, silicone former's follow the conjecture of whatever its riding against. if surface is really rough on 1 or both sides of the crack its hard to use this tool & get a good seal on either side of the caulk, try taping off the smooth side if u have 1 & put in as little caulking as possible & strike with finger both ways to work it tight in the rough surface. you can apply a little more then if needed. remove tape carefully while still wet. hope this helps.
Hello Plumber parts. I just want to ask about my shower. Back in the 1970's when my shower was installed they put in a shower liner attached to the wall with nails. The liner has come away from the wall because the nails heads weren't big enough. So now I'm wondering if I go, remove the nails what should I use instead in a wet environment. Are there caps I can put on the end of screws or something like that?
Also the shower tray is not level. Have replaced the vanity in the bathroom (it was absolutely horrible) , but this shower I'm hoping to last me a few more years. I went under the house but got no clues as to why the metal shower tray is at an angle so you end up with a pool on one side. Anyway I'm not the most clued up about plumbing. Will eventually pay someone to rip the whole shower out but got to make do cause blew all the renovation money on double glazing. I am planning on replacing the toilet seat though just cause it will make the toilet look a bit newer than 44 years old. Thanks love your channel :)
I immediately thought of a flat window blade but was scared it would scratch (the tools recommended are all plastic). The special tool was crap and left a ton of caulk along the edges. I spent a lot of time scraping it with a flat head screwdriver which is far worse. Now I know.
Nice one James! Do a video on how I can avoid tradesmen from hell😂 I either get messrs bodgit and run or John Wayne and the cast from the Alamo which is why I am doing this stuff myself, wrong side of 60 with one hip replacement done and another one lined up for when covid19 has run its course! The sites that say they vet tradesman are an absolute joke by the way, I reckon their mum and dad write the reviews for most of them. More power to your elbow old son love the no nonsense videos they are bang on and also entertaining keep em coming.
Hi we have a leak in the corner of our new shower. The plumber said she would remove the old silicone and redo it. He removed part of it in the corner then went over the old and put the new in the corner. I'm not happy,is this ok?he also didnt clean it, so dirt is now stuck under the new clear silicone?
Had low level shower tray fitted basin was teed into it only has 1and a half metres from soil stack but water comes over the top plumber not answering his phone only been in 6month help
My bf and myself are in the middle of doing this. However, we realised that there is a gap between the tray and the wall and not sure what to fill it with. There seems to be a hole underneath the shower as we noticed that there is a water dripping down the wall. what is the best way to go about it? Thank you everyone
+plumberparts Agreed! Im having to do it myself (so I can save a penny or two) - would be great if you could include the links to your tools! (Or just respond here)
That really helped me out, thank you for sharing. (Super tip about bacteria! Now I know that I should have bought the little tool Amazon recommended, I thought they were just up-selling haha)

Noice! Got right to it and saved me time guessing.
Great tips. I am ready to have a go!!
Someone said use soapy water spray over the silicone when scraping off to minimise the silicone left on the tile and adds for a smoother finish ????
Top man James,
Top tips.
My bf and myself are in the middle of doing this. However, we realised that there is a gap between the tray and the wall and not sure what to fill it with. There seems to be a hole underneath the shower as we noticed that there is a water dripping down the wall. what is the best way to go about it? Thank you everyone
Great video, will give it a go. Good to see a plumber not showing his "plumber's crack" lol. Many thanks.
A few links to the small tools that YOU use would be useful. Enjoy your videos immensely and HOLD TIGHT !
ReadandWite Ok, we'll get on it!
+plumberparts Agreed! Im having to do it myself (so I can save a penny or two) - would be great if you could include the links to your tools! (Or just respond here)
Brilliant. Thank you 👍🏻
Could have shown good alternatives what to use if you don’t have a profiler. Not everyone has them.
Hi where did you buy your multi master tool from? I saw it on one of your videos installing a toilet.. Be great if you get back to me thanks
Rickardo Napoli I think I got mine from Screwfix...
Great video mate thanks for posting 👍👍👍
That really helped me out, thank you for sharing. (Super tip about bacteria! Now I know that I should have bought the little tool Amazon recommended, I thought they were just up-selling haha)
