The killz spray over silicone for painting is an amazing tip. I think it will probably get mostly overlooked because it was said dry quickly in passing during this video. But people are always wondering how to paint over silicon and it’s way quicker than putting a paintable caulk over it.
Quick. Precise. And to the point. I needed to re-caulk a shower at one of my rentals and wanted to get in and out yet make it look professional. You also answered the question of which caulk to use (Kitchen and Bath mildew resistant) and not to waste my money on 20yr stuff. Great video, Sir.

I've used Original Cramer silicone tools a bunch and I'm obsessed! Makes it easy to have absolutely perfect silicone lines, which is helpful because i'm no quite the artist like you to do it with just your hands
Nice to watch a video that is well presented by an experienced pro. I’ve been involved in renovating older homes for more years than I care to remember. I chuckle when I think about DIY’ers out there smearing silicone caulking all over themselves and their tubs as they try to learn the “touch.” I’m an oldster and don’t bother watching too many “how to “ vids, but yours are worth viewing as you seem to be as particular and conscientious as I tend to be.
Just finished watching Jeff's grouting the bathroom wall tile and silicone tips. Great tips! I'm in the process of tiling the bathroom of the 107yr old house I recently bought. I was at the home improvement store ready to purchase what I thought I needed and remembered Jeff's Home RenoVision DYI show. My little voice told me I better check out his tips on this before I pulled the trigger and I'm glad I did!!! I've been doing renovation type work for years, but one can always learn more. Thanks Jeff
Thanks. I just recently came across the step of adding water weight to the tub. You are the first one to mention this does not pertain to steel tubs - which is what I have,

Great advise on the finished bead; I did the same thing you did using one finger to make a clean finish. I found my finger getting real sticky fast and stayed that way for a while afterwards. Then I had an idea and just finished my bathroom caulking wearing those disposable nitrile examination gloves and worked perfectly! No more Sticky Fingers (Sorry Rolling Stones, not about your album) & the gloves always wiped off cleanly. I was so proud of the finished job!
Thank you. I have siliconed lots of things before but I haven't removed old silicon too often so I started searching for videos. All of them said when re-applying new silicone to tape it first to do it properly. Unless I'm using white caulk on dark tiles, that sounds ridiculous to me. Just wipe it away with your finger! I can tell Jeff, you are a humble man, but you are the best I've seen for DIY videos, or even for contractors. You are so real and practical and a great teacher. My dad was a foreman and I have roughly 2 years or so experience working on job sites from when I was younger and your type of sense of humor is what you see from the nice guys on a job site. Now I work with doctors and lawyers and they think they are all that and a bag of chips and they truly aren't. A lawyer had a leaky sink drain and called a plumber to fix it. Plumber came over and it took him about 15-20 minutes to fix it and handed the lawyer his invoice. The lawyer said "I don't even charge this much per hour!" The plumber replied "I didn't either when I was a lawyer."

you need to stretch the acrylic like as if it is under normal use before installing the silicone. That way it will not peel away from the tile and collect debris and colorants.
Absolutely the best silicone caulking video on UA-cam. THANK YOU! I only wish I would have found your video before I caulked my bathtub. Looks like my 9-year-old grandson did it.

can i just say after doing hundreds of tiling jobs the most important thing is ventilation for keeping your tiling joints nice and clean after the tiling work is completed.using spray bleach with a toothbrush on the grouting every now again helps to keep it looking new for years to come.also if you ever wipe the tiles down never use a yellow dusting cloth as the dye will stain the grouting.
Just finished the playlist and appreciate the series and channel as a whole. I'm doing demo on my master bath soon and I'm making sure I'm doing my learning prior to the day of Haha. You have a great channel. Glad I found it!
Jeff is spot on regarding silicone. The special "20 year guarantee" stuff is crap. Just get a low modulus silicone. It does the same job, and is a damn sight cheaper. When sealing a bath, be it steel or acrylic, i always filled the bath. It replicates the weight of a body lying in it, and when you release the water, once the sealant has dried, you have an excellent seal. I also seal internal corners on tiles, and wall to ceiling joint. ALWAYS.
Brill I'm due to redo our bath tub i was tokd by many to fill bath say half full and do a bead ..ive done this before but often once emptied get the bead a slight bulge which isn't nice ....you're a joy to watch great work
Good job. Just remodeled a shower and did not grout the joints, but filled with silicone instead. Some spots required a significant amount of silicone. In the future I would do as you said and grout the joints as a backer, then fill with silicone. Great video, thanks!
I've watched a lot of your videos and I think you're the best teacher out there, but this Silicone is installed wrong. 2 tips 1: use silicone profilers, they work amazingly, one side to push the other to clean. I think you can get them on ebay for under a dollar. but for an extra few dollars you can get the tile silicon profilers. 2: use water to make it mold proof. if you just use your finger you leave tiny holes and mold will grow, even in the best antimold silicon, it just takes longer. If I was doing it for myself I'd only use Tec7, it's far better than anything else on the market
Your entire tile, grout, and silicone DIY series is incredible. I am just finishing grouting the 1 foot x 2 foot porcelain wall time to the wall with the fixtures which I replaced. Your information saved me from making lots of mistakes. I think I just made a few. The process was my first tiling project and I certainly learned a lot and saved a lot. I think I will do the floor tiling next. It is needed also. Is the same 1 foot x 2 foot porcelain tile i used in the tub surround acceptable to use on the floor. I do not think it has a glaze/varnish coat on it. Thanks again so much Jeff. You are quite talented and make it look possible!

Corey grua I installed a acrylic tub last year. I used %100 silicone, and did fill the tub. In less than 6 months everything had separated. I looked into it a bit, and apparently some acrylics won't bond with the silicone, and you have to use acrylic caulking. May want to look it!
I Always use wet wipes as clean off and never use dry finger but the wetness off the wipes, also I use soap liquid to smooth out on my finger, note if your resealing an older bathroom make sure there’s absolutely no shower gel, hair soap etc on the area as it will definitely not stick correctly
A good trick to get nice clean caulk joint is to spray the silicone bead with rubbing alchol before you smooth it out with your finger or caulking tools, it keeps it from smearing.
For the grout joint at the bottom of the wall(near top of the tub) , there's siliconed grout in tube , matching lots of grout colors , i still add a layer of transparent silicone over it and it seem easier to fill that bottom joint!! Also thanks for all these videos , 8yrs of exp in renovation and i still enjoy learning few things , different ways to do them and what not :D
On my silicone it says specifically NOT to use the finger. I was wondering why, but what you said makes sense. I wasn't gonna buy some tool, but maybe old card will do. Can't end worse than the first time I tried applying silicone without watching this video anyway.
Very nice! I fail to understand how you can do this job without any tape or those special tools and you still get a neat outcome. I guess that takes practice. Most of the other videos highly recommend those geometric shaped tool, scrapers, etc...
This video is a neat outcome, if you are willing to ignore the 1/2 inch smear of silicone on each side of the bead of sealant. Once on, it can never be totally removed. Try taping first, and then use water with detergent before the finger shaping.
This man is literally the real life tim the toolman. Imagine the millions, if not billions, of dollars this man has saved average hard working people all around the world.
I don't like using the cutter on the gun or scissors.I find a sharp exacto knife does the best job.I have done a lot of caulking and a nicely cut tip is very important. No pun intended.
2 min into the video and I was like "Whaaaat??????" I never knew either. Not that it's hard to do it with a knife, but it sure seems easier. Assuming it makes a clean cut.
@@WeezieV: Because the Caulk should match the Grout, and,/or the color(s) of the Tile(s). Recommend to use "clear" caulk on uneven tile joints --- like what was shown, in this Video, on the accent-tile section (on the center of this wall). Furthermore, don't use your finger to spread the Caulk; Home Depot, ect., sells the rubber tool(s) to spread the Caulk.
Nope. I never use fingers as it causes misting. I don’t use tape either as it creates a lip when you pull it off. Use a profiling tool like “fughi” great kit. I like these videos but disagree with his method in this vid. I silicone bathrooms almost daily. Using a profiling tool makes the job perfect.
Until now , I was told to use a wet finger to smooth off and it never worked! Many thanks for getting that straight for me. I also noted how stiff my silicone gun was to slide up and down its shaft. WD40 did the trick.
My bathroom specialist showed me a technique whereby you push the silicone on and spray it with clear liquid like soapy water once it's in all location. Once done use a wooden lollipop/ice lolly stick to wipe it clean.
Thank you very much Jeff for this vey helpful video you explain every little tips and tricks I followed most of your renovation videos and all of them are full of great tips which made my life easier God bless you Sir 👍👍👍
Believe or not. We’ve been in this house 19 years. Never had to recaulk once, never had mold. NEVER My cousin had a squeegee in her shower and I asked her about it. She dries her walls and caulk lines after each shower. So in this house we did the same. No mold ever. Gotta check after the kids shower to make sure they toweled the caulk lines. It only takes 3 minutes to dry the walls and caulk lines. If you take a shower and leave You will have the water sitting and you will get mold. I’m thankful to my cousin.
To me it's funny that I failed to do anything else like math science history I don't understand it but when its comes to home renovations I understand it lol I really want to have this has a career
Hi Jeff, I was wondering why some other UA-camrs said to wet your fingers to smooth out the silicone, but you said to use dry fingers at 15:36. BTW, great video! You did a fantastic job.
I used ge 100% silicone II and doing it works dry finger would have made a big mess. I tried a trick I saw on another video to use amonia free glass cleaner after you lay your bead wow best tip in the world for a first timer.
Love the new into graphics! I also use the Fugi tool as well. Just a tiny 1/8" bead, I make the hole in my tube as a small as it can be and still allow the poker rod to penetrate the plastic seal. Then the Fugi tools it down perfectly, much better than my finger, and caulk doe snot ride up the wall.
Like I have said a thousand times, if you are good at latex caulking then you will be good at silicone. relying on the tool weakens your skills with latex as well. But it does work!

100% I'd also like to see how good it looks up close after using his finger, especially when he stops and starts with a dry finger.
On my silicone it says specifically NOT to use the finger. I was wondering why, but what you said makes sense. I wasn't gonna buy some tool, but maybe old card will do. Can't end worse than the first time I tried applying silicone without watching this video anyway.
Simple but great video !!
I use my triangular shaped caulking tool that I got at lowes and my finger when needed. Great video.
I totally get it, Cheers!
Love this tutorial!
Thank you Jeff!!!
Thankyou that was greatly explained
Good tip on half filling the bath before bonding. Makes sense but many wouldn't think of doing it.
This man is literally the real life tim the toolman. Imagine the millions, if not billions, of dollars this man has saved average hard working people all around the world.
Many of us need to know how often and the steps to replace old tube calking. Thanks for your education.
Nice job .
Good explanation.
I exactly doing the same way .
Sharp edge tile tip is gold. Made that mistake before and it looked like a murder scene in the bathroom
Nice video. Great advice.
Whenever I've siliconed anything I spray it with water that has a tiny drop of washing-up liquid in it, and then run my finger along it. Works great.
Tub-o-towels are my new method for what your describing. But they also clean your hands from the silicone. 2 in one.
Awesome video Jeff. Miss the black eye though. 😂😂😂
Very helpful, Thank you 🙏
Very informative! Great job to the people who made this video
I was today years old when I realized my caulking gun had a cutter on it. I've spent 9 years cutting it with scissors lmao
I don't like using the cutter on the gun or scissors.I find a sharp exacto knife does the best job.I have done a lot of caulking and a nicely cut tip is very important. No pun intended.
What is the reason clear cannot be used everywhere?
@@johnathandoerty1021 exactly use the cheap accessories that spread caulk easily, they won't introduce bacteria inside wet caulk
Another great, and helpful video!!!
Once you've taped your edges you'll never go back. So much cleaner and nicer looking.
I like your videos. Very detailed
Thx for the Kilz tip. In the past, I've coated silicone with a bit of latex caulk if I needed to paint it, but this sounds easier
Killz is magic!
Another good one.
Thanks Larry, Happy Holidays to you too!
Believe or not. We’ve been in this house 19 years. Never had to recaulk once, never had mold. NEVER
My cousin had a squeegee in her shower and I asked her about it. She dries her walls and caulk lines after each shower.
So in this house we did the same.
No mold ever. Gotta check after the kids shower to make sure they toweled the caulk lines.
It only takes 3 minutes to dry the walls and caulk lines.
If you take a shower and leave
You will have the water sitting and you will get mold.
If water/spit gets behind the silicone then that area won't stick and seal. Dry is best.
@@landrewmackinnon4888 wet for latex caulk only
I used ge 100% silicone II and doing it works dry finger would have made a big mess.
