One of the best demonstrations I've ever seen on this pedal. We really notice how much fun you were having while trying it out haha. Thanks for sharing!
To your confusion at the beginning: as a matter of semantics, an envelope filter and auto-wah are basically two names for the same thing. One thing that might differ is that an auto-wah typically refers to a pedal meant for getting wah pedal sounds (duh!), but that basically just refers to the range of parameters. An "envelope filter" might be more directed at synth-type sounds and less toward wah-type sounds. Some pedals, like my 3Leaf Chromatron, can do both, although it is marketed as an envelope filter. It can also be switched to manual control so that it functions exactly like a wah pedal when you have an expression pedal plugged into it. As far as the MXR filter, I think it's a fine pedal, although my experience of it was less than stellar. I blame that mostly on it being my first filter pedal. I had no idea how to really set it to sound good. I would be constantly fighting with getting it to consistently sound good, and frequently I'd end up getting real loud booming in the low end, which you can actually kinda hear in the video. I think if I had to make one change, I think it's weird that they chose to make it only a down-filter.
I know that some people use auto wah when the effect is controlled by a lfo (it varies over time independantly from what you play, like a phaser) and enveloppe filter mean a filter triggered by an enveloppe (= something happening when you play) so litteraly this kind of pedal. I believed these definitions are the good one and make sens but yes, lot people use auto wah for enveloppe filters.
Oh and a wah IS a specific type of filter. So that totally makes sense that most of enveloppes filters have a wah sond but that some crazy ones can have a more synthy vibes.
Got an envelope filter cheap, not happy with it ... will be trading it in and getting this one instead. Thanks much for your video, helps make it the obvious choice of what I need. Awesome!
I’ve got one, distorts really easily (you can hear it in your demos), a nasty “crack” in the high end, so you need to keep the input level really low = noisy bass sound …
I've heard there's basically only 3 envelope filters worth having for bass: MXR M82, Aguilar Filter Twin, and 3 Leaf Chromatron/Proton v4. M82 is the most affordable, but it's also the least reliable for live shows
I hate it.I can't get a good funky quack.Sounds.Hard to get highs, sounds like a wet blanket is over my speakers .My Subdecay Prometheus blows it away.i'd put it on Reverb but I'd feel guilty.
Hard to tell the source of the issue from that information. I would try a different outlet and/or a different 9V adapter if you can. If neither of those fix the problem you may want to return the unit
@@dirtbirdmusichaha just came across my comment it was definitely a faulty power supply. That herbie bassline is so sick dude one of my favorites to play 😊
hey can you tell me what settings were you using on the pedal at the very start of the video when you were playing? I have been searching for a pedal which gets that sound for so long. There is this song called CON GAME by Meiko Nakaharaand i've been wanting to know how to get this exact bass sound so it would be great if you could help me out!
Mine just arrived today. Couldn’t figure out how to get to the effects. You absolutely have to insert a 9v battery into the back of it. Why don’t they explain that? Why? Am I supposed to know that? I’ll keep it just to pass on to the younger generation of what not to do. Maybe another effects pedal is needed with this one. My owner’s manual didn’t co-incide with the product. Could’ve been the new trainee. Who is Dunlop? I thought I was dealing with MXR.
Dunlop is the parent company of MXR and Way Huge. They make the Crybaby wahs and such under the Dunlop name directly. And 99.999% of all effects pedals ever require power in some way - either via battery or via plug - so it is a surprise that someone didn't know. But hey, if you didn't, then you didn't. No harm no foul.
I can’t get my from being muddy and nasally sounding through my GK 700rbii amp ad Neo full rig, I took to compressor off, switched my pedalboard around.. Any advice would be helpful!
@@dirtbirdmusic Thanks for your response, after about a year I finally figured it out last night. I disconnected my old school Alesis 3630 Compressor, turned the volume knob on my Fender Jazz Elite all the way up, turned the volume and boost knob all the way down on the GK amp and only turned the volume knob on the GK700 RBI’s to adjust volume, leaving the Boot knob all the way down/off. Then the pedal came to life and worked as it intended !😁
I can never get mine to sound right on my GK 700rbii Amp and 410 &115 Neo rig, it always sounds nasally AF, anyone have any experience and advice? Thanks in advance.
Have you tried with fresh roundwound strings? Experiment with sens. and q knob especially, different gain levels, full open tone knob on bass of course.
I have never been a fan of this pedal on it's own, paired with an octave pedal however it really keeps the sound full and less nasal. Also if you use an EQ in your pedalboard pull some 125 and 500hz out and it comes to life too. You are definitely right though, on it's own it's nasally and you lose the lows, then if you pull enough dry in to compensate it gets muddy, I just got a mxr bass octave and put it before the EF in the signal chain and found what it's been missing.
that's my concern with this pedal indeed. I ve just ordered these as well as the SA spectrum, and the fact is that I much prefer the responsiveness and dynamics of the analog MXR pedal compared to the dynamic-less SA spectrum. For that only reason, I really love playing with the MXR pedal. However, if I may have the same responsive and organic type of envelope filter with a more bubbly sound, like you mentioned, that one pedal would be the answer for me. Any suggestion ?
@@RoccoDylon69 might be worth running compression after it, I needed mine before it just to trigger the filter even with Sens all the way up. I have the Keeley Neutrino and Bubbletron as well. Neutrino is mainly only useful on bass using the Low Pass setting but allows almost too much low end through, doesn’t sound too quacky unless you crank the peak knob. Bubbletron has a great smooth sounding envelope filter on ‘Bank 2’ that may be more what you’re looking for. Plus it’ll come with killer sounding phaser and flanger modes to boot, totally worth the $200 imo. Saw a video on the Ashdown envelope filter and thought it sounded great, just a big foot print
@@taylorc9411 TY for the suggestions. I'll consider those filters as well then, as I heard good things of them already. For now I've made an additionnal order for the Emma Discumbobulator, and I ll as well try to put my hands on a Fwonkbeta. Talkbassers led me to these 2 pedals 🙂

Sounds great! I’m researching pedals to eventually put a pedal board together and this one will likely end up on it!

Could you try to play The De'but bass solo with envelope filter?
I have Nylon Strings on my P Bass and this Pedal effect dont work on my P Bass why?
Sweet playing! What was the riff you were playing in the synth bass/bottom dweller setting? It sounds very familiar.
Isn't that Chameleon, by Herbie Hancock?
Your bassface looks like that awkward little girl meme. You know the one, in the back of the car.
