    What's going on everybody?!? SeanPierceJohnson here with this week's episode of "Stompbox Saturday"! On the stompin' block this week is the new Oceans 11 reverb pedal from the cats at Electro Harmonix.
    Load with 11 different reverbs (not to mention multiple modes of certain verbs) this little stompbox could easily be placed anywhere a great reverb sound is needed. But how many of these reverbs are any good? Which reverb types stand out? I'll give you a hint: the Spring reverb is one of if not THE best spring reverb I've heard in a pedal.
    We'll sample EVERY SINGLE REVERB in the EHX Oceans 11 pedal and put them to the test.

    Very comprehensive demo and loved the samples. I wanted to mention that with the secondary mode function you can control the reverb slightly on echo. In trem mode the level knob should just work as a reverb blend. This pedal is way more complicated than it seems at first glance. There’s 2 hidden knobs on most of the effects and some have up to 3 modes. The manual was intense to figure out but I appreciate EHX for packing in all the functionality.

    • @SeanPierceJohnson

      Yeah, I realized that about 3 months after I finished the video. It’s great to have so much but the manual...boy...what a read!

    Great video! Glad you took the time to do this one. It's a very complex pedal and you made it sound amazing!! I didn't have high expectations for Oceans 11 and Canyon but EHX did a great job and I'm sure they are happy with your demo of this pedal.

      SeanPierceJohnson I can totally tell from all of the demos and reviews I’ve seen of it. I started playing guitar just for surf. But it’s hard to do on a budget just simply because of the drippy reverb. I’ve currently got a Classic Player HH Jaguar and a Blackstar ID:260 TVP. Both of which I got for a bargain. All I need is this bad boy!

    Hey Sean, super cool video man! Really appreciate people like you who take the time to do this!
    I have a little confusion about this pedal and the Holy Grail NEO,.. How can they both be on the same price range this one having a lot more features than the NEO? Sorry if that's a stupid question, I know features don't define the price, but I would have thought that at least there had to be a little difference... I am thorn between the NEO and the Oceans 11!

    • @SeanPierceJohnson
      @SeanPierceJohnson  4 роки тому

      hey Gio! thanks for checking out the video.
      I'll try to answer your question as best I can:
      i don't know where in the world you live but here in the US the price difference between the Holy Grail NEO & the O11 is +/- $25. With a reverb pedal this compact the only thing that really is changing is how much digital info can be stored within it. (if you look at both pedals, they're the same size enclosure) So with that in mind, it's actually a good thing: the NEO is a simple pedal at a fair price and the O11 is a simple pedal at a fair price. They're suited to different players and schools of thought: simplicity VS versatility.
      ultimately, what you need to consider is "how many reverb sounds do I need?" AND "do I want simplicity of control or more control over my reverb tone"? these will guide your to your tonal destiny ;)
      happy tone chasing!

    Nice demo, thank you sir. Question: any tips for getting reverb to cut through the mix better while playing with a band? Do any types work better than others for this. The O11 is the pedal i have on my board, at the end of my signal chain.
    Thanks

      Also I use an AC15 so I don't have an effects loop

    • @SeanPierceJohnson
      @SeanPierceJohnson  3 роки тому

      Hey there! Thanks so much for watching.
      Reverb is a tricky thing. It’s an effect yes but it’s origins are nature. Having said that certain types can be more present in a band mix: Plate, Spring and other bright sounds CAN be present but don’t have the density for more ambient styles.
      Since you’re running it into your amp you can take advantage of your amp’s EQ to help the reverb tone cut through.
      Generally darker reverbs just don’t cut. They’re deep and fun to play but generally don’t have presence.
      Not sure if any of that made sense or helped but I hope it did

    really nice job Sean, How do you feel about this vs the fathom for an orange OR 15 amp? I am a bit torn and if i recall you run a fathom on your board.

    • @SeanPierceJohnson
      @SeanPierceJohnson  6 років тому

      Hey Sean! (nice name...and correct spelling as well)
      Yes, I currently have the Fathom running on my board...but this will most likely be changing very soon as I just got my Orange back from getting some fresh tubes and I like use the amp's verb for my stuff (i'm not really an ambient player).
      Having said that, MY preference would most likely stick with the Fathom over the Oceans 11 ONLY because (I stress ONLY because it really is just ONE reason) that the Fathom has a MIX control as opposed to a LEVEL control.
      Level controls sum together the effect and dry signals which can result in an unwanted "boosting" of your overall signal. Mix controls blend in the effect signal with your dry signal proportionally so IMO they feel much better.
      But the Oceans 11 is a really great pedal for the price. I certainly wasn't anticipating keeping it (I was going to flip it). But the Spring, Mod, and Trem+Verb modes are too good to take away.

  • @DJ7tringGuitar
    @DJ7tringGuitar 6 років тому +1

    Hmmmm..since you brought up stereo, now I'm curious how your Orange (set dirty) and Carvin (set clean) would sound. Perhaps an A/B/Y pedal demo needs to be in order.

    • @SeanPierceJohnson
      @SeanPierceJohnson  6 років тому +1

      Only a few hurdles to jump:
      1. Orange could use a re-tube.
      2. Need a second cab
      3. Need an ABY

    • @DJ7tringGuitar
      @DJ7tringGuitar 6 років тому

      SeanPierceJohnson
      1. Orange DIVO 4 Self Biasing kit.
      2. Mic a cab for one, run the other into a load box, and a cab sim of your choice.
      3. Saturn works ABY (active) $79.00

    • @SeanPierceJohnson
      @SeanPierceJohnson  6 років тому +1

      1. the DIVO won't really solve the problem in my case and it works better with new tubes...and is more expensive than a re-tube. Mine needs a full check-up.
      2. Don't have any load boxes of any kind. I've wanted an OX but lack fundage. Plus then we have the problem of digital latency with the analog cab.
      3. i can always get the Orange Amp Detonator. I here good things about it. And i have the G2 I could use.

    • @DJ7tringGuitar
      @DJ7tringGuitar 6 років тому

      SeanPierceJohnson
      1. Ok that's fair; but it should be kept in mind with a DIVO you can mix, match, and change tubes on a whim.
      2. I hadn't considered the latency. There is also the Two Notes Torpedo range to consider as well for a more budget friendly option.
      3. Thanks for showing me another ABY box that's cheaper than, Fulltone, Mesa, and Radial

    So oceans 11 vs RV6 or HOF , which would you pick strictly based on sound? Nothing too expensive Perhaps the Fathom pedal. Lush sound is what I’m looking for think cleaner sounds like the dreamy stuff on Siamese Dream but also handles experimental stuff well . Thanks for your time

    • @SeanPierceJohnson

      Check out my head-to-head of the HOF2 vs. Oceans 11...personally the Oceans 11 gets my vote but I haven’t A/B’d the O11 vs the RV6...
      Are you on a particular budget?

    • @jarrod9052
      @jarrod9052 5 років тому +1

      SeanPierceJohnson 250 but I would definitely step up higher but don’t want to go over 400. I really appreciate you taking time to respond . Earned a new subscriber 🤟🏼

      Jarrod Charlifue dude, no worries. Always happy to help. And thank you.
      If you’re budget is $250 I recommend checking out the Neunaber Immerse Mk 1 or Mk 2. Super lush reverbs! Brian Neunaber is the Reverb master. Multiple sounds and modes. All very lovely sounds.
      But if you want to stick to a budget options the Oceans 11 and RV6 will serve you well.
      But the Immerse, as a multi mode Reverb, is hard to beat.

      There are several answers to this question:
      1. I did not grow up listening to MBV so I have no clue as to how to really get Kevin Shields' style.
      2. I still don't listen to MBV...just haven't gotten around to it or have the time to get into it.
      3. I don't really like Reverse reverb that much so I won't make it sound good if I don't like it.
