I can see how he was so nervous to tell his story on that stage, he keeps refreshing his mind every 3 sentences not to get himself too emotional. Respect for what he shared, reminds me that the struggle people have are true and that's not cus they are crazy, it's just basically the fear inside of us ❤

This hit home. I get so anxious speaking in class I can hardly talk and my throat feels closed and I can’t even swallow so I need a drink with me at all times. I feel most have anxiety but then they do things I feel I never could and it’s hard but I make progress and one day maybe I’ll be able to give presentations and embrace nerves

Very useful information. In life there are only 2 problems--mind and the body. To feel better reduce overthinking. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives good relief from stress-anxiety. To relax sit on a chair or lie down, neck straight, eyes closed and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight your thoughts. With daily practice the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Do the practice without any expectations when taking a walk, at work, when reading, before sleep etc. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a better life. Reduce negative social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind instantly. Best wishes--Counsellor.

By beautifully narrating your own personal journey of confronting your inner void and finding meaning and purpose in your life, you are bringing hope to many young people across the globe who are struggling with similar issues. It's ironic how the same technology that was invented to reduce our anxiety (the mobile for example; by keeping in touch) has ended up increasing our anxiety levels. As Thoreau had warned, 'men have become the tools of their tools.' Thank you for sharing your story Jake! And keep exploring :)

      Humanity misses connection.
To countries, to the world, and to other people. We don't realize how small we are, nor do we realize how widespread we are. You can go anywhere on this planet and find someone, but no one wants to actually interact directly anymore.
An in-person connection, does wonders for both the mind and spirit...across all cultures.

A thousand times YES bro 🙌!!!!! I had such extreme anxiety around following my passion for singing and thought that I was never good enough so after my music degree I dropped all music for ten years. The past year for the first time EVER (I work in theatre thank you covid) i have started listening to the callings of my soul. What you say resonates with me so deeply as it is EXACTLY what I am trying to convey to all the young people out there who are terrified of following their heart's calling especially when it comes to being a performing artist. I am back to my singing and encouraging others to overcome their fears too!! Too many give up too early because they are too scared and or don't have the right support systems in place. Mindfulness, presence, AWARENESS, stillness. Let's continue to spread the word!! May we all find within us the courage to do what our soul calls out to us 💪

If anyone says they started to have anxiety when they turn 18 or go to college it’s kinda annoying people with real mental health issues have it when they’re really younger and they have no idea what’s going on and it messes with your head and mental health and you wanna die mostly everyday but u just have to tell yourself your sick and try not to listen to your bad thoughts most people in this world don’t realize how hard mental health is to the brain and body

Anyone notice self help is no longer an industry but more like a requirement to attempt to make it anywhere in this world?
And by anywhere i mean pretty basic places like a decent place to live with enough food

That’s very inspiring but a lot of people just live with low level anxiety and can’t go on a flight.

What if Jake actually never had anxiety in the first place neither had he a childhood of experiencing but avoiding - and a medicalised one, too. His normal, healthy (dopamine-mediated and cognitively influenced) curiosity and courage was confused with symptoms of anxiety, which is adrenaline-cortisol-mediated, shot from the amygdala without cognitive control and designed into us for genuine emergencies, which are by their nature, seldom occurrences. Thus activation of that system - in the absence of trauma such as abuse, bullying or being subjected to micro-aggression over a period of time - is pretty rare. What seemed to had missing from the environment he was in until adolescence was Common Sense (I1ve never thought even just few years ago that I'd write Common Sense with capital letters indicating that despite its name it is not at all common these days. When curiosity kicks in and dopamine gets flushed into the bloodstream, for some individuals, it reaches an amount that can cause a short spike in heart rate, blood pressure, trembling hands, butterflies in stomach, etc. These are HEALTHY physiological phenomena.
Some decades ago, in intensive care units across the globe it was fashionable to administer continuous dopamine infusion at set dose to patients with low blood pressure (AKA renoprotective dose) in an attempt to preserve kidney function as continuous haemofiltration simply was not available yet. These were also the times when many syringe driver infusion pumps were not fully automated - i.e. the plunger had to be manually adjusted when the dopamine-syringe was replaced. And on occasions, inadvertently, small boluses of dopamine injection was given to these patients, all of them attached to monitors showing their hearts activity and blood pressure real time. Many of them conscious and alert, reporting symptoms consistent with Jake's "anxiety" whilst, as a nurse I could see the peak in heart rate and blood pressure on the monitor concomitantly. All these patients appeared more excited than concerned/fearful. At least to me witnessing such clinical incidents now and again as they happened.
Completely different from the reports from and experience by those patients who had had inadvertent bolus injection of (nor)adrenaline, many of whom often reported chest pain, agitation, imminent doom or told to bungee jump so they went only to realise later that there was no rope for their jump - i.e. they suddenly were in a life-treatenong situation; their fear was almost palpable. Concomitant increase in heart rate was much greater and prolonged, often with abnormal heart rhythm provoked, but pressure-hike was often in the region of 200-250 mmHg systolic (about twice as much as their baseline systolic pressure - also meaning potentially getting a stroke) just as it would be when amygdala fires the adrenaline-mediated Flight/fight/freeze/fawn response to life-threatening situations. Yet the initial bodily symptoms, like trembling hands, butterflies in stomach, etc. exactly just as with dopamine flush.
What if Jake was labelled and made to believe that he had anxiety as a medical condition, i.e. there was nothing wrong with him but was "disabled" by his environment? What if there was no miracle or revelation or epic journey but the first ever opportunity for him to experience life's events by being present as opposed to avoiding them out of fear of some kind of adversity? What if majority of that large number of youth he quotes who are regarded to be anxiety sufferers are actually curious, enthusiastic -many of them treated with medicines that numbs and disconnects (i.e. harm) them unheeded whilst profit is earned not just by pharmaceutical companies but health insurers as well as having a mental health label does tweak up the price of the policy premium - even in the UK - significantly. What if - once again - the limelight and blame is shifted on the individuals for various societal adversities - Durkheim calls them to be anomy - whereas the root cause is at a different, community and interaction/relationship level telling us something pretty sobering about our culture, ore more precisely about our hijacked culture?
After all people are born to be good, i.e. Nature/God would not create a species that is self-harming and/or detrimental to its own self. And people ALWAYS make rational decisions. Even if one or their behaviour appears to be irrational/non-sense that is because either the witness does not know the whole story (context over a period of time) or the Truth is yet to be un-earthed. I have no doubts that there is a paradigm-change happening and it seems it will take a lot more suffering to get there. But Hope - not least thanks to individuals like Jake - is getting shinier, more colourful as more and more people share its existence and in fact acts with that in mind. When this crowd reaches a certain proportion - labelled as critical mass - Hope suddenly starts to change and transform and none other emerges from its old carcass but an old friend: common sense. Yep. Without capital letters.
So go Jake, go! Go curious/enthusiastic/passionate people, go! You've got my back, I am defo right behind you!
    Thank you.
    For being. 🌈😎🌐👍
