I love the no-BS approach of this channel. Its why I subscribed. No timewasting, just a guy who loves guitar.
Thanks!
Bill & Becky L500L and XL are the Rolls Royce or Ferrari of hi-gain pickups IMO. Harmonics fly off these things and make you sound like a genius!
🕺🤟😎
i think if zakk didn't use actives he'd use these but i wonder if loyal emg motherfuckers like him and the metallica guys will switch to fishman one day
@@michaelgrahamwongacutemadness Kirk already prefers PAF's over his EMG actives. Not sure what Het will do. He seems more grounded in the lore so he might stay. Fishmans are a newer generation thing
What's the difference between l500l and l500xl?
Can confirm, Bill & Becky for the win! I never had a USA, I replaced a L-500L that I had for 20 years when the plastic pickup mounts broke and figured might as well try the XL for the next 20 years. MUCH more presence, high fidelity sound, and surprising keeps feedback down even at high gain and high volumes. I love it as well!
👌
I’m not the greatest player and I was never able to afford an N4 but at one time I was able to afford a Squier Contemporary HH Strat with a licensed Floyd, and I could also afford both a Seymour Duncan 59 and a Bill & Becky Wilde L500XL and the resulting guitar is a lot of fun to play especially if you want to go mad on pinch harmonics.
Heard my mandatory "Hi Im Euge Valovirta" and im happy!
Good 😎
Great comparison! Btw. I wonder if Glenn Fricker would be able to hear the differences ... 🤣
He would most likely spazz out!
He would deny its even there and say it’s all in the speaker 😂
Glenn Fricker is a worthless schill. He Sells Impulse Responses to 14 year old angry teenagers who have learned to say the "f-word" for the first time.
HOW DARE YOU BRING HIS NAME UP ON A VIDEO FROM A TRUE GUITAR LEGEND LIKE EUGE?
Glenn is a hack, a schill and a fraud. Remember when Glenn hated Plugin Guitar tones? Now he loves them. Remember when Glenn hated drum programs? Now he loves them. Remember when Glenn said "save your money, buy a real tube amp, buy a real cab, and buy a real mic and mic the cab and be unique? Now Glenn says buy every guitar sim HE DEMOS and use his.......wait for it........HIS IMPULSE RESPONSES. Glenn is a Christain hating schill for the large companies that make DIGITAL guitar sims and Impulses. AND anybody with average hearing can tell the difference in these guitar tones because Euge is an honest guy. Weird how being honest lends to clarity.
😁
@@Joey.Darkwoods-StudioThis actual spastic kindly asks that you not use that ableist term.
Thanks for the video, great playing! You just convinced me to buy the Bill Lawrence USA Pickups, I'm loving the brightness of the sound.🎸
Wow! No doubt, it’s Wilde for the win! The look on your face when you first tried it said everything. Gotta say, that Wolfgang is pretty badass too. Thanks for this shootout! 🤘
Yes. Thanks!
I thought the Wolfgang sounded great too. Much fuller than the BLUSA.
Great Video!!!
I have an original Bill Lawrence L500 Lead (the original L500L) in one of my custom build guitars. I purchased it new over 30 years ago, and it's the best pickup I've ever heard! I just purchased a new Bill and Becky Wilde L500L to replace the bridge pickup in another custom build and I can't wait to get it!!! I spent 30 minutes talking to Shannon on the phone to make sure I was ordering the right pickup for my needs, and I couldn't have talked to a nicer, more helpful and accommodating person. Shannon was so nice and helpful... and now I'm thinking of replacing a lot more of my pickups with pickups from Bill and Becky Wilde!!!
An excellent comparison and demo of these pups. They practically read your mind, what you wanted to play, thanks Euge!!
Bill amd Becky 100%.... sounded amazing. So that's how I feel about Gibson 498/490 pickups
Hell yeah 🎉
So well done video editing, signal chain, monster tone on both P/U, stunning guitars and studio...Thx Euge
Thanks! Really glad to hear!
Egue I finally purchased a WILDE L500XL. Had to come back and re-watch your demo comparison. There is great chemistry between your fingers and the WILDE L500XL, It really fits your playing style.
I got one of those Bill & Becky L500XL a few years back as a present from a friend, had in a SG, now its in my Explorer, sounds killer!
Your videos have me loving the EMG 81s and now the Bill L’s. Of course your playing helps bring out the best in all the pickups. Straight 🔥🔥🔥
Glad to hear! Thanks!
That's what I thought too.
Don't just get fixated on the 81 set, try the Get Set too. I have them in my Explorer and the are awesome. FYI I have the 81 set in my Soloist, so it's not an uninformed opinion. I like both, but the Het Set is something different.
Bill and Becky is the only L500XL worth buying. Best pickup I have ever heard or played.
got a Wilde L500XL on my Kramer Pacer and I love it so much. 🥰
the BLUSA sounds to me like with a "bees in a can/harsh metallic sound" vibe, even when clean.
I agree 😎.
In my Dime collecting phase, all my Washburn's I used the B&B's. Since Dime always said those where the one's he used and you tell them apart by the silver ring. For the price, they killed, and wanted to keep them how Dime had em'. So when I had a Dime guitar with a Duncan Dimebucker, took it out, sold it and ordered a BnB XL. Another good one Euge, now let's see who say's a pick up makes no sound difference!
Cool! Thanks Joey!
while he did use both of them from time to time he mostly used the bill lawrence usa pick ups over the b&b. you can see in most of his pictures they were the billusa. he also stated in the dime clinic he was getting them from stewart macdonald who sold the bill usa. b&b are great pickups but over the years he had changed a the recipe a litte bit on how he made them. if your going for that traditional dime tone go with the billusa
@@ericspann7127The only changes Bill Lawrence made to the L-500 series were a renaming ("L" became "XL" when the 510 models became the 500C and 500L) and a switch to AlNiCo V for the magnet because the proper specification of ceramic magnet was no longer available. The Bill Lawrence USA knockoff was not redesigned to reflect the change in component availability, because that grifter knows nothing about pickup design, hence the Wilde L-500XL is still the most accurate contemporary version.
Love my bill and becky 500xl. Becky and Shannon are great to talk to as well. Great company...not many companies in the US like them these days!
I’ve got one of these MIJ N4’s… mine has the Kahler trem and locking nut. Didn’t realise that it came with Bill Lawrence USA pickup, thought it would have had Bill & Becky. Took it out tonight and sure enough it was a Bill Lawrence USA. Needless to say I immediately went to Wilde pickups site and purchased a Bill & Becky L500XL :) and also some other goodies ;)
👌😎
Im on their site cannot tind them...
I really enjoy the Bill and Becky pickups as well. They sound really lovely for the high gain playing, especially that staccato picking on the lower strings. Great balance, I want some! I usually play lower output but now I want something with more of this sound. Great video!
Indeed. Thanks!
The entire L-500 series sounds similar, just with varying output levels and treble extensions: C, R, L, and XL from quietest and brightest to loudest and darkest. All are louder and brighter than other humbuckers with similar specs, due to the L-500's dense magnetic field and lack of eddy currents, such that even the XL is much brighter than one might expect. Bill Lawrence used to recommend a pair of 1MΩ pots with "modern" tone wiring (e.g. tone is parallel to volume) for a 500kΩ load (equivalent to a Washburn N4's lone volume pot), though Becky and Shannon at Wilde usually focus on compatibility with a guitar's existing pots by saying that an L with 250kΩ pots sounds like a quieter XL with 500kΩ pots. I hope this helps!
A few years ago a few of us with various N4’s got together, and in the room, at volume, you really couldn’t tell which guitars had which pickup in. Both are great options.
👌
This video has gotten you another subscriber! I have a Wilde L-500XL waiting for a single-pickup partsocaster project as an homage to early-'80s shred: graffiti yellow (anachronistic but I love it), 24.75" scale length, and an EVH Wolfgang neck profile. Coming later this year are the body and neck for an homage to later in the '80s: Kramer-style holo flake finish, Valley Arts-style body and neck, and Wilde Pickups HSH set of low-output pickups (L-500C, L-298SL, L-500R) which can be combined for output between and L-500L and an L-500XL.
Glad to hear man! Thanks! Cool! 🤟🎼
One of the 90's rock machine and defining tones.
Under rated with boutique pick brands. Definitely worth every penny which out perform boutique pickups
You don't need lots of dime to get great tones....
👌🤟
That red, black, and white striped guitar once known as Excalibur, has been replaced by the N4. Behold the new Excalibur!
Bought two L500xl’s today!,..because of this video!,…good job!
I been using Lawrence pickups since 81, the Wilde pickups are like the LSR era pickups, BL-USA sounds similar but the feel is night and day.
Found a Bill Lawrence USA in a Washburn Culprit I bought back in 2007, it was such blast in my ears.
I was keen at that time on trying différent pickup, my regular superstrat had in bridge a DiMarzio Virtual Hot PAF with a mellow sound and that Bill Lawrence was from another planet. i bought one to put it in my superstrat where it's still.
I discovered all shity debate on the ripoff, fake and any other bullshit, my god, it's pickup and those are still in my top list and on two of my guitars.
Nice review dude, thanks!
As always, great comparison! Now I have my frends tele guitar with Wilde pickups, they are so quaiet (noiseless) and sounds sweet.
Thanks!
Not only did my best friend have an N4 back in the day but he has a Bill Lawrence 500XL. I think it's in his Schecter. I'll check and send him this video.
👌🤟
Great video. I've been using all 3 of these pickups for my entire guitar career, with most of my time spent on the BLUSA and Wilde ("B&B") l500xl. But I'm realizing that the 81 scales very, very well under multiband eq and can achieve a very similar tone while keeping the characteristics of the active preamp. But the Wilde does it effortlessly.
Great Video! I just ordered a BL USA L500XL a few hours ago, now i am even more hyped to try it out. Btw, as far as i know, the orignal pickups in the n4's are l500l, but don't take me to serious.
Thanks!
The original L-500L was renamed the L-500XL when the L-510 pickups became the L-500C and the L-500L. This refers specifically to Bill Lawrence's actual work at Wilde Pickups, not the "USA" knockoff.
Ive always loved Wilde Pickups. Have them in 2 guitars and they are for sure the best tone Ive had.
Try the Wilde L500R in the neck position, the 59 is awesome as always, but the R is impressive on a N4 for bluesy and crunch sound. Great video as always 🤟
Thanks!
07:48 The look you give when you hear that first metal chunk says it all! 🤘🏼 Could you please do a video of the Wilde L500-XL going straight into a Peavey 5150? That would be the ultimate tone! 🔥
😎🤟
The Wilde pickups are awesome. And man that Marshall/EMG 81 tone is just always amazing 😂
Yes
Great video Euge! The Bill n Becky sounds better to me, but i think the BL USA sounds more like Nuno... It's got a singlecoil twang to the top end that i hear in his tone, thinner but very aggressive
Thanks!
Totally agree,same impression here.
It's actually because Nuno uses L500L, not XL. XL is Dimebag's tone
Oh, my God.....in these pickups you can find all dirty sound of the american rock 'n roll, and the Road 66!!✌️😁🤘 I love both of them, the Wilde version feels a little bit compressed....🤔
Bill Lawrence….the guy, not the company
😎🕺
I remember about 20 years ago, I have Marshall/Dean ML with Dime BL-59 pickups...one they I swap them out and tryed Emg 81/85...I was blown away. Clarity, power, lows, highs...To this day emg's are my choice nb1
The timing of this video could not be more perfect! I landed a Funky Munky Black Bolt and I’ve been wondering which L500XL to swap the Dimebucker with. Problem solved! The Bill & Becky sounds PERFECT.
Glad to hear! Thanks!
The old original usa XLs are rare as hens teeth.
Thank you for the video. I am now going to replace the X2N in my Block Inlay flying V with the Bill & Becky L500XL. I play Black Metal and use a Rivera Knucklehead K Tre, and the anp is dark to begin with. I feel like the X2N though being a high output pickup is a little too dark for that application on that amp. The Rivera has SLO levels of gain, and the bright of the 500XL will help bring out the highs. I don't use pedals or effects, not even reverb. So an EQ pedal is a non starter, and I am not going to use a TS9. It's already a high gain amp, in not going to drive it with pedal, just for the sake of clarity. The right pickups should be enough.
I had a bill Lawrence xl500 prototype gifted to me from a freind that used to work with him, sadly that guitar was stolen. I'll never get that tone back, but that thing was a beast! I did notice that I had to cut some highs on the tone nob otherwise it would cause severe pain in the high volume situations. I only ran through a 60s Morley power wah and my Music Man HD 130,
That's all I ever needed
BL USA is more present to my ears, which I like better than Wilde USA :)
Personal preferences 😎👌.
@@EugeValovirta230V That's true 👍
I've owned both, the Wilde XL has more gain and is slightly compressed compared to the USA XL which is cleaner and tighter. The Wilde L500L actually sounds the same as the USA XL. My pick is the USA or Wilde L500L and still have them in my guitars. I also highly recommend the L500C in the neck which is super clean and clear.
Judging from your facial expressions during the riffs I guessed that you'd go for the Bill and Becky....sounds fantastic....but if I recall correctly Dimebag modeled the Dimebucker after the original Bill Lawrence as this is the one he used in the Cowboys from Hell era (I think)....a comparison that includes the Dimebucker would be also interesting...:)...great work as always Euge!! \_/
Yes. Thanks!
Euge playing Nuno and sounding like Euge... PERFECT.. very nice description and conclusion as usual.. .. keep rocking..
😎🤷🙏
I swapped the BL USA in my N4 for the "real deal" - a set of Bill & Becky L500R (Neck) and 500XL (Bridge) - also with a Push/Pull Coil Split for both Pickups... - it's a difference like day and night.. - and I can confirm your impression; the "Wilde" is much beefier, not harsh or picky at all (like the BL USA) - and the neck split is crazy good, as well as the bridge in split still sounds amazing; so you get a ton of sounds out of these. The interesting thing is - the 500XL is a high output pickup - but retains a clear note definition and articulation - clearly a win!! Besides - I have and like the EVH also very much!! Greetings - Markus
Cool!
wow Wilde for the win .
👌
I did the same mod on most of my N4’s and it’s a real improvement ;)
👌
@@EugeValovirta230V i also have a Tone Zone in my parts build N4. I always been fan of DiMarzio since Steve Vai and John Petrucci ;)
I recently purchased a 96 USA N-4 Swamp Ash with Paduak stain which is absolutely beautiful and plays fantastic but man the tone is awful to the point I wouldn't play the guitar. So I've just ordered the bill and becky lawrence 500 xl after seeing this video and hearing the difference. I can't wait to change it out now . Thanks for your great content. I love the work you do.
Cool man! Thanks!
EVH has the all round BIG POWER frequencies, EMG 81 is controlled and very tight, BL could be SD or DiMarzio heavy wound pups, B&B Wilde has the similar characteristics of the BL just a little less top end.
But can they sound good clean or pushed with little grind for Bluesy sound….?
i guess this answers the question once and for all of which is better
😎🤷
Combining this with a comparison to a Seymour Duncan Dimebucker, which I think was reverse engineered and based off the Bill Lawrence USA L500XL, would be great.
Thanks so much, Euge. Love your videos, playing, and music.
Aaron
Was designed with Dime to be even higher output, check out Ola Englunds comparison video
I allways played Bill Wilde Gibson pickups. They are allso called circuitboard Gibson pickups. They have solder points for all (single) coils. I allways liked their creamy sound.
Okay…after getting my N4 a new Floyd Rose, D-Tuna, noiseless springs, and titanium parts, NOW I need to get a Wilde pickup in the bridge!
😎👌
I got the bill and Becky Wilde xl500l for my late 80’s charvel . Kicks ass great bass response and mids but it’s got that signature highs . The USA BL sounds like a bad single coil . The bill & Becky much bigger and warmer sounding.
Cool! I agree.
Dimebag did flip his pick up or so I read, did you try it that way ?
The Gristle factor - Wilde has it. Nicely done.
Yes.
I've got a Wilde in my N4 and am curious how you decided on pickup height for the Wilde. Thanks.
Like always with everything; just where it felt (and sounded too) the best 👌.
I dont want this to come off as rude, but your name is fun to say.
Great video by the way. I've been on the fence about putting a seymour duncan dimebucker into my dean 79 ML or just getting a real bill lawrence.
Euge is my nickname and it sounds totally natural to Finns but not to anyone else I guess 😁.
Thanks!
Dime used Bill Lawrence in the bridge
👍
The Wilde Pickup sounds way better and just looks like a higher quality product. Sounded closer to the Nuno old record sound.
Is it thicker compared to a standard pickup like a Duncan?
The L500XL just has a crushing sound.
Regardless of what distortion you run it through, I prefer your tone on the ebony fretboard over maple -- much more IN YOUR FACE! 🙂 2:21
Just flip back and forth from 2:21 3:00, IT'S F'N OBVIOUS!
Great pickups
Yes
I liked the EMG - but it's hard really gauge any of them without hearing in a mix. The EMG just gave more clarity of notes with less harshness and undesireable transients in fast picking passages. But that's JMO.
👌
Cool review. I still cannot get passed how that N4 looks like it was made for a small child. However, I think that Nuno is a little guy.
Thanks! Yeah he is.
5:38 8:20 bill Lawrence USA has a lot more attack and clarity in the upper mid range. I can see why Dime used it
Is that blue a rockman rack something at the background? 09:11 The BL-USA sounds way better for me somehow.
ADA MP-1
@@EugeValovirta230V Thank you🙂
I have both pickups. For over 10yrs now. I always try and get myself to love the Lawrence USA cause that what Dime's Dean from Hell is mostly seen using. But can't, the Bill and Becky is where its at for me. Love the Bill and Becky pickup. Great video!
Thanks!
Agreed, the Bill Lawrence USA L500XL pickup has its place in the history because it was used by Dime, but at the end of the day the ones made by Wilde were developed by Bill Lawrence as an improvement over the original L500XL. He changed the magnets to alnico and changed the design to make it less bright and smoother sounding the original L500XL. By all means it was meant to be better than the original L500XL.
@@TheNocturnalEvil thx for the comment back and for the info.
He used them all, DFH at one point had a chrome housed lawrence which were made by Bill and are basically what bill and becky make today
@@ryanday9288 I didn't know that. Thx that cheers me up lol
I love Nuno. Emg 81 sounds best!!!
Euge, i swapped from BL usa to B&B L500XL and the B&B is much hotter than BL so i have to adjust my neck pickup, u did the same thing? May i know ur pickup height? Neck and bridge... thank u so much 🙏🙏🙏
Yes. No idea. I just adjusted it by ear & feel to where they work the best 👌. Like I always do.
So, that wilde pickup was the one used by dime in moscow 1991 concert ?
No idea.
Yes, same specs.
Are you blending the mics to 1 track for each recording?
57s are summed together with Radial’s 2:1 summing box into one channel of Warm Audio’s mic pre and the VR1 goes into (another) one channel of the mic pre.
Cool. Thanks for answering🤘
Come on people. Don’t you know that Glenn Fricker PROVED that all pickups sound the same? These all sound different. EMG’s sound best. The others sounds ice pick shrieky. The Wilde pickup sounds a bit smoother. Who would have thought that those pickups could sound so different?
😁👍.
That dudes a moron when it comes to guitar gear.
8:42 f%ck yes... those low ends are killer
😎💪
Kaikki ne mikit kuulosti ihan Eugelta ;>
😎🕺
Interesting fact Pornograffitti was recorded with a Steinberger with an EMG (85?)
Wasn’t there so can’t confirm but according to a Guitar World interview of his from that time he used his N4.
@@EugeValovirta230V Michael Wagener said on Gearslutz/Gearspace that the only guitar in the studio that would stay in tune was the Steinberger so they used that. Nuno obviously had reason to promote the N4. There is probably a mix of both to be fair.
Btw, the Bill & Becky sounds great in that guitar!
Oh cool! Didn’t know that. Probably yes 😎👌. Thanks!
Nuno said he played his homemade guitar, which was not an N4 yet. He had a guitar body someone was throwing out for cosmetic reasons. Bought a washburn neck from a parts catalog and Bill Lawrence L-500 pickup because they were the cheapest. He said he didn't want a blade P/U but that was his option. Didn't have enough $$$ to paint it either. The sound was recorded through an ADA MP-1. They used the Pre-set numbers 38 & 41 through a Macintosh power amp. He created his own settings next album and live. See link adadepot.com/mods/Nuno1993.jpg
All passive?
No the EMG is one of the active EMGs, but yes the rest are passive
If you need a high output and balanced pickup for a HIGH GAIN tone, the active EMG 81/85 is one of the best choice. It isn't perfect for crunch or clean tone (although Hetfield's Roland JC120 + EMG combo sounds very good and the single coil SA is great too) but when it comes to palm mutes and distortion, EMGs were born for it. I also like the high output Seymours but they handle slightly differently the palm mutes. Anyway, the Bill Lawrence pickup fits Nuno's style perfectly and yes, the Wilde is wilde. :) I'm sure you've said it a few times Euge but what kind of pick/picks do you use? Hearing your pick attack makes me curious.
Can’t go wrong with EMGs. I have the 81/85 set on most of my guitars 👌.
Alex Lifeson has entered the chat.
But Nuno used L500L which is a bit different to L500XL. Less output, cleaner. L500XL is Dimebag's tone.
So it not which one is better, they actually should have those differences, being different pickups in L500 line :)
You preferred L500XL, maybe it's up to your taste, nothing wrong with it. I prefer L500L myself. Though I equally love both Dimebag and Nuno :)
Personal preferences.
Beef, Beefy, Beefier, Beefiest.
💪😎
Wilde pickups can't be beat. XL Bridge, R neck in a Les Paul is superb. Can handle heaps of gain and downtuning while retaining chrystal clarity.
Bill's designs were far ahead of his time.
👌🤟
To me the B&B sounds better, but the BL USA sounds much more like Nuno, with that single coil-like piercing highs and lack of bass.
It’s all about personal preferences 👌.
I have both, and in all honesty they don’t sound as different as they’re portrayed in this video. If anything the Bill Lawrence USA pickups have more clarity and less muddy midrange frequency. The Bill Lawrence USAs are the original designs that he made in the 70s and 80s, so get Bill Lawrence USAs, they sounds much much better.
I want to know the sound difference between BILL LAWRENCE USA vs WILDE PICKUPS but all you do is play as many short notes as possible to show how shreddy you are. You'd have to play considered riffs with long notes, and chords - to show the difference. ALL short notes = too little information. This isn't about BILL LAWRENCE USA vs WILDE PICKUPS , this is about you being all proud about how many notes you can play per second. If you want to play really fast go ahead and change all your video titles to "WATCH ME PLAY AS FAST AS I CAN" instead of pretending you're going to give us useful information.
I try to be upbeat about everything but am SO annoyed right now. You DID NOT help people decide which pickup to choose.
Hey Euge i always wanted to ask you what you thought about the Seymour Duncan SH-12 Screamin Demon? Idk if u ever used them, ive got one in a couple of my charvels, and one in my buddy blaze k2 model 2 shredder.. they seem to be extremely hot. I love George Lynch and especially his late 80s sound
I had an ESP Kamikaze back in the day but sold it ’cos I just didn’t like the neck profile (but love the headstock) that much. If I remember correct the Demon was a medium output pickup and not that hot. Kinda like a bit more beefed up PAF 👌.
