  • Becky goes into the origins and what inspired the idea for the first open coil blade design humbucker: the L-500 series! She also talks about what the L500 can bring and how the L500 series is used by players in many different genres, from jazz, blues, metal, and MORE!
Bill as a designer always created multi-faceted pickups. He said his pickups were not one trick ponies.

Becky and Shannon were nice enough to have Bill make me an XL pickup for a guitar that Dime's family had made for me back in 2010, bill signed and dated the back of the pickup, it's still in the guitar and sounds great today. I know Bill is up there making extra hot pickups for Dime right now.

My first guitar was a 1978 Harmony VA-800 Phantom, from a J.C. Penny catalog. Still got it.
    It came stock with L500.
    Really fun guitar!

Thanks for keeping the brand going you two! Wilde pickups, and all of Bill's designs are some of the most underrated pickups these days and more people need to see just how great they are. I plan to put a set of l500s in one of my guitars very soon.

I have a Wild Bill 'n' Beckys L500L in a Charvel 88 with an '84 Floyd. Most expressive guitar I've owned. Harmonics on every fret. The pickup is incredible, great string separation, so rich and toneful but can blow you away in high gain stuff. Outstanding sound, thanks!

These are the best pickups I've ever used. I have 3 of them in my favorite guitars. These sounds that these pickups produce blow away the JBs, any Bare Knuckles in the bridge position IMHO. Thanks for doing what you do and Ima buy more!

I know its 2 years later but there are several pickups on the market that are XL500-like (also a big fan of all the real Bill Lawrence twin blades) as far as clarity and response. 1. Lundgren M7-M8 2. Seymour Duncan Jupiter 3. Lace Alumitone/Deathbucker. I set all my guitars up for Death Metal in the bridge and Jazz in the neck (not Seymour Duncan Jazz that is terrible Jazz pickup). I also would look at the Seymour Duncan Black Winter, maybe the finest modern/vintage construction humbucker ever designed. Its really pretty amazing and the neck is surprisingly versatile. Again I am talking strictly about 7 and 8 string guitars.

One of the most interesting stories regarding the L500 pickups…I’d read an earlier interview with Nuno Bettencourt where he had built his very first guitar with parts purchased from Stewart MacDonald. He stated that he used the L500-L pickup.
Years later, I learn that the N4 comes stock with the L500-XL, and that it is the -XL variant that he uses.
I couldn’t figure out for the life of me where the confusion came it. It very well could be that he just misstated the model.
Then I read about how the L510 series came about. Originally, the L500 family only had two models, the L500-R and the L500-L. Ronnie Montrose, around 1980, requested for Bill to make lower output versions of the L500 pickups. So Bill delivered as requested, and assigned them their own model numbers, the L510-R and the L510-L.
However, people stuck with the L500’s as they didn’t realize the L510’s were the same exact pickups, just with lower output.
After a year, to avoid confusion, Bill decided to merge the L510’s into the L500 family. The L510-R became the L500-C (for “clean”), while the L510-L became the L500-L. What was originally the L500-L became the L500-XL.
Nuno’s first L500-L predated all of this. Thus, his pickup would have been known as an L500-L when he originally purchased it. But spec-wise, is identical to the L500-XL, which is the original "pre-510" L500-L.

These are in their own universe. There really are no other pickups that compare. I've had the L500/L 500L in an SG and the clarity is just incredible. I've had the 280/290 combo in a tele and that guitar could do rock, country, blues and even straight ahead jazz all while being dead silent. On top of everything else, they are an incredible deal. A great product made by great people. These videos remind me that I have to get a few more sets.

First encountered this pickup (original creme 500xl) in a Strings and Things custom strat that I could kill myself for eventually selling. That started my 40 year love affair with Bill’s pickups. It seems like a lot of doubters don’t understand that for pedals, you want a pickup to have maximum string to string clarity and that you make your eq adjustments at the amp. Bill understood that. If you spend a little time with your amp eq. , his pickups can’t be beat. Loud and clear and amazing with pedals. Crisp, no mush.

I would love to know how your pickups are rated. If i remember correctly, I read somewhere that Bill had a strong opinion that traditional output ratings are never truly accurate? But I don't remember the reason why....

    • @Mark-vv1dy
      @Mark-vv1dy 3 роки тому +1

Bill went by inductance, which is measured in Henries and is an actual correlate of tone, whereas DC resistance is not. A lower inductance pickup will have a lower output and higher resonant frequency, and the opposite for higher inductance. A vintage style PAF will generally have an inductance of around 4-5H, while a vintage style strat pickup will be 2-3H. You can wind a pickup to equal inductance with thinner coil wire, and its DCR will be way higher, while its output and resonant frequency won't change much, so inductance is much more useful for comparing between pickups that differ in construction (like a filtertron, P90, and strat).
