Jeezus! That sounded just like the song! Your mixing and tone dialing skills are top notch, man! Theres only two people on UA-cam or anywhere else that I've heard actually be able to truely get the sounds of the original players, and actually play like them, too. You with dime, and Pete Thorn with EVH. My hat's off to both of you, cuz god damn is that a rare hat to wear!
Finaly, the comparison I was dying to see somewhere. You should make another demo and include new Bill & Becky L500XL, they are making it with AlNico magnets right now.
I think the SD sounds significantly darker (and noisier) than the other two, especially noticeable in the staccato part around 2:10. Between the OB and the BL USA it's hard to decide :) They are very similar. In the mix I liked the OB a tad bit better. Cool video 🤘
Cool Vid, Ola! "Food for Thought", for sure. Subjectively speaking, I like the sound of the BL USAs best in this "comparo". That said, I have found that the BEST test of a pickup is how satisfying a "clean" sound can be produced with EQ settings as close to "centered" as possible. The better it sounds in this circumstance, the better when "pushed and dirtied". In my personal experience, I have not yet found an equal to the Dimebucker with this test.
I’m not an expert on Pantera, but I like a lot the band. Once said this, to me the Original has the feeling of the CFH record and maybe a little of the VDOP too. The USA model (my favorite) is in the vibe of the VDOP and the Dimebucker is ideal for all the extreme work Pantera did for their last albums. Interesting video Ola, as all that you have in both channels 😊
The original bill lawrence 500 xl not the USA honestly in my opinion sounds like Dimebag and even some van halen . I have a dime with it in it and it definitely does dime justice
You hit it on the head- it’s not just the pickups, the different guitars even if they’re the same will sound different. I’ve got four USA dime dean’s- fbd (Duncan distortion), southern cross, slime razorback, and a stealth. The latter 3 all have dmt/dimbucker and they all sound significantly different, about as different as the 3 guitars in your video! Really blew me away how 3 very similar builds could all sound that different with the same pickups.
The first BL sounds like it has more bass, the second BL sounds a bit more even between bass and trebles, and the Dimebucker sounds more treble leaning. I also personally prefer the USA version, but they all sound great. None of them are drastically different. They all still sound plenty like Dime and then you can tweak and refine the tone from there with the amp/cab/pedals. And yes, the guitars may make each sound a bit different. Ola needs to try this again with the same three guitars! 😬🤭
I liked the Dimebolt most, but all of them sounded great on different parts of the riff. Some sounded better with palm mutes and others with open chords or faster riffs.
I like the Bill Lawrence USA L-500 XL. But what I think could be is the wiring and possibly different brand volume and tone pots. But I could be wrong on that. Anyway, great video and keep doing what you're doing.
Its difficult to say between the OB and USA. The SD is my least favorite. I think I like them in the same order you had them stacked in the video. Great playing Ola! You are so knowledgeable on everything Dime and always have his tone dialed! You should be the Pantera tribute band guitarist! 💯
IMHO The L90XL is the #1 to find in good shape. Got one for Xmas in 1979. Cost my folks like 90.00 It was a big deal and it sounded incredible. Lower gain than L500 but more dynamic
I own the original Bill Lawrence dual rail pickups from the late 80s. The exact ones Dime used and let me tell you, the moment I dropped one in my Jackson Kelly it came to life!
Throw all that gain on there and pickups make so little difference as do guitars. Great test. Moving the mic a quarter inch would make a bigger impact. Glenn Fricker @ SMG has been testing this quite a bit lately which pisses people off to no end.
Closed my eyes and finally decided the stealth with the original was the closest. The bolt being second with the usa, although both are basically a coin toss, and then the cross with the dimebucker being the farthest away by a pretty good leap. Sure surprised me! Only real noticeable difference between the original and the USA was the usa had a bit more low end and something going on in the 700-1200hz region.
I'll be among the (likely) very few who actually prefer the Duncan here. More low end, more chunk, more sizzle. Perhaps in a mix or band context the BLs are "better" but if all you want is instant teeth crushing Dime tone for your afterwork jams, the Duncan gives you that in a box.
I couldn't hear a difference really between the two Bill Lawrence (Bloodborne flashbacks), but the Dimebucker definitely had noticeably more warmth and bass response.
Ola clearly you need to just swap in the different pickups on the same guitar and do a comparison, that would eliminate the woodwork and build issue as well as other components. Alot of extra work for a similar outcome but it would be interesting!
Nice video, I really would like to hear the difference between the pickups, but with harmonics and in the way Dime used to play, something that interests me was the sustain of some of his recordings, like cemetery gates, at the end of the song we can really hear the guitar screaming
I like them all. Got a Washburn N2 from a friend that took the 500 out of it first, so I did a fresh wiring with a Dimebucker and SD Jazz. Topped it off with a real OFR and had coil splitting all around. That guitar sounds like a Tele with the Dimebucker split, it's kinda funny.
I agree with you. I think the US one sounded gnarly without being too harsh. I have one in my N4 and it sounds awesome. It is the 500L in my Guitar, I believe, rather than the XL, but I don't think there's a world of difference.
I bought a Bill Lawrence Usa Xl500 for my Peavey HP and it seemed way happier on cleans even than the stock alnico paf style. Anyone who says they are only good for metal havent played them
I used to buy and sell these on ebay 15 years ago. I had a pre-lawsuit LP copy that I put the Bill&Becky in(My personal favorite) and it lit tf UP! I had to convert the pots to 500K but SO worth it!!!
After reading some of the comments, lets clear some things up. NOT counting the SD Dimebucker, there are (3) Bill Lawrence variations: The original "Bill and Becky" L500xl (in the Dimebolt) which are the earliest iterations before Bill passed away. The "Wilde" Bill Lawrence L500xl (in the Razorback) which are still made to this day by Bill's wife and daughter( I've ordered 3 in the past month) and the "Bill Lawrence, USA" (not shown here) which have the white printing on the face of the pickup ( and can usually found in certain Nuno Washburns or bought new on their own) , made from a completely different company who , somehow gained the rights to use the name from an old partnership after splitting with Bill Lawrence, and are also still in production. I have (2) of the Original "Bill and Becky" versions and (3) of the "Wilde" versions and I'll say this: Both versions sound fantastic BUT the OG-BB just has THE magic tone. So articulate and clear, yet still aggressive! I have yet to try the 3rd (Bill Lawrence, USA) model...but aside from the print on the face, they LOOK closer to the OG-BB. Good comparison!!
Speaking about gear. Make a video from the fender re issue model T. It's one of the heads of me dreams. I liked the first comparison of the first humbucker but also the Seymour Duncan
When played alone yes, you can tell the slight difference of the three. Got to take in how each pickup was made, how many wraps and the magnets used contributes to the slight difference. In a mix or playing a live concert your not going tell any difference, that's when mic placement and the type of speakers used makes the biggest difference in tone or IR.
I was looking to get an upgrade for some dual slug pups in a guitar. I was looking at BL and this seals the deal. I need it for low tuning and this seems solid for that. I can switch the current pup to my new strat since it is more ballsy for riffing than the basic single coil.
Ola, please do an honest review of Fokin pickups whether they can really compete with famous manufacturers. In particular, I am interested in the "Emperor" and "Berserk" models, thanks in advance.
I have two Dime 333s with Bill and Becky L-500XLs in them that I got way before Bill passed away (both around 2011 or 2012). I fucking LOVE the high output. Ola, if you're interested in redoing this video with the 4th variation, maybe we can work something out.
That USA is the best sounding out of the testing. It seemed to have decent output and a crunchy/tight delivery all rolled into one. By far, the more notable of the three!
I think they all sound good, mainly because of that TOAN. Speaking of tone, what about a Dimebag amp head showdown?? Randall/Krank/Dime? I know that there are severe differences between them but it could make for a cool video! Please respong!!
Ola, great playing and nice reviews. I thought the USA Bill Lawrence L500XL sounded best in this mix. All really good pickups though. What about a Brass Block? The original Floyd came with a Brass block. This changes tone as well.
I like the USA XL for brighter stuff, but prefer the SD for more modern darks. Add a noise gate and it's sounds gf reat through a 5150. I have The Cross #87 and it rips.
I have dimebuckers loaded into a few guitars and love them. Although I'm really liking the USA L-500 xl. Seems tighter and a little more focused although slightly less heavy. Also listening on shitty laptop speakers.
Question for Ola: What's the real influence does the power amp section has in the final tone? If you get an external preamp and plug it direct on a DAW without a power amp section (or any kind of simulation of it) running an IR; and compare to this same preamp plugged in the fx loop of an amp and send the speaker out to a loadbox, and then to the DAW running the same IR. Have you ever tested something like this?
I like the higher output of the Dimebucker but they all sound fantastic. but as Glenn Fricker will tell you the tone is more in the preamp and speaker cab (or emulator)
With you headed off to Petrucci camp, perhaps now would be a good time to compare the different Petrucci DiMarzio pickups between the CrunchLab/Liquifire and the Rainmaker / Dreamcatcher. Might help those contemplating an EBMM JP15 vs the Majesty as a new guitar.
I used to have a Washburn N2 (yes, Nuno Bettencourt guitar), cheaper version, with a Bill Lawrence. Certainly could do some dime vibes, especially the trebbly crisp nature of it.
I've had a USA Bill Lawrence in the bridge and Duncan full shred in my jackson dk2 for 20 years. It's an amazing combo. A friend had a dimebucker and liked the Bill Lawrence better too
I have a Bill and Becky L 500l in one of my guitars. Nails the Nuno percussive thing. Personally, I couldn't make any XLs or Dimebucker work for me or my setup. To my ear, those are too peakey, or unbalanced. Also, the Bill and Becky L 500l is an awesome neck pickup.
I have a bl usa l500xl once in a while I’ll swap it out for something else but eventually I’ll come back to the USA l500xl because it’s got the sound I like
Riffing like a boss. People need to appreciate how good of a guitar player you are. Which is why you got invited by John Petrucci.
This is great. What an epic comparison
I've got the original XL-500 in my Washburn N2 from 1991 and it still sounds sick.
Don't forget about Attila he's right at the top of anything Dime. You are very much right they nail the tones and just the over all feel.
I will say, I was SHOCKED at how low-put the 500XL is - i’m not sure which one I have in a guitar, but I love the sound, and it’s Shockingly Dynamic
Yeah dime liked his pickups around 11-14k resistance
Finaly, the comparison I was dying to see somewhere. You should make another demo and include new Bill & Becky L500XL, they are making it with AlNico magnets right now.
I used the USA, Bill & Becky and the SH-13 in various guitars. The Bill & Becky eventually turned out to be my favorite.
I think the SD sounds significantly darker (and noisier) than the other two, especially noticeable in the staccato part around 2:10. Between the OB and the BL USA it's hard to decide :) They are very similar. In the mix I liked the OB a tad bit better. Cool video 🤘
Agree 100%

Would be cool to see a comparison between Peavey 5150, 5150 iconic and EVH 5153 all going through the same cab with similar settings
I Agree 💯
That would be mental!!!
if you setup them right they can all sound the same
Awesome! For me, personally I like the Bill Lawrence USA L-500 XL! All sounded great but, also great point on build etc.
Not the first time I think the Dimebolt is the best sounding Dimebag guitar you own. That thing just rips and is still defined. Loveit!
Bill Lawrence USA L-500 XL is the one that I liked the most...Great vid :)
Definitely a difference, but not a huge one at all. Each one had a great sound. Thanks for the comparison!
Bill Lawrence USA L-500 XL gets my vote! That was sikk
Dimebags pickings will be a nice one next..
This is a great comparison ola.
FINALLY! I've been saying this needs to be done for years
I’m not an expert on Pantera, but I like a lot the band.

So easy to capture witch one he used in each period by listening to the vine they produce, right?
I can hear Glen's voice in my subconscious shouting "STOP WORRYING ABOUT WHICH PICKUPS YOU USE! CHANGE YOUR SPEAKERS!" lol
You hit it on the head- it’s not just the pickups, the different guitars even if they’re the same will sound different. Really blew me away how 3 very similar builds could all sound that different with the same pickups.
Just bought the USA version for my next build with a floyd because of this video. Thanks.
What a coincidence. I just went down this rabbit hole a few weeks ago and settled on the Bill and Becky L-500XL, which just arrived today!
The L500XL sounds the cleanest, but the output of the dimebucker is sooo good!
That dimebucker has a punch I didn't hear in the Bill Lawrence pickups....all 3 sounds fantastic though.

I like the Bill Lawrence USA L-500 XL. But what I think could be is the wiring and possibly different brand volume and tone pots. But I could be wrong on that. Anyway, great video and keep doing what you're doing.
also how close the pickup is to the bridge i think makes a huge difference. they all looked noticeable different distances
@Andrew Walsh that is true.
I like the Bill and Becky and the Dimebucker.
Its difficult to say between the OB and USA. The SD is my least favorite. I think I like them in the same order you had them stacked in the video. Great playing Ola! You are so knowledgeable on everything Dime and always have his tone dialed! You should be the Pantera tribute band guitarist! 💯
What a pleasant surprise of a video! Thanks, Ola!
I would be really curious to see you try a randall V2, and see how it compares with your other randall heads!
Throw all that gain on there and pickups make so little difference as do guitars. Great test. Moving the mic a quarter inch would make a bigger impact. Glenn Fricker @ SMG has been testing this quite a bit lately which pisses people off to no end.
The 500 USA sounds amazing to me. I know it's all personal pref and that pickup sings to me. Thanks so much for making this video!
Cool video man 😎
That bill Lawrence USA had so much goin on with the slight warmth in tone, it sounded the most like 5 minutes alone to me.
Thanks Ola! Dimebucker is my favorite!
I liked the "Dimebucker". Maybe a bit more treble than a lot of guitarists would like, but it sounded good to my ears. Keep rocking, Ola! ♥️ 🤘🏻
Closed my eyes and finally decided the stealth with the original was the closest. The bolt being second with the usa, although both are basically a coin toss, and then the cross with the dimebucker being the farthest away by a pretty good leap. Sure surprised me! Dimebolt no doubt. Great sound! 🔥🔥

I couldn't hear a difference really between the two Bill Lawrence (Bloodborne flashbacks), but the Dimebucker definitely had noticeably more warmth and bass response.
What's bass response? Its the same of bass?
Ola clearly you need to just swap in the different pickups on the same guitar and do a comparison, that would eliminate the woodwork and build issue as well as other components. Alot of extra work for a similar outcome but it would be interesting!
They were all used and blended in mixes. I know. I got to meet and hang out with Dime and Vinnie. Very nice guys.
Nice video, I really would like to hear the difference between the pickups, but with harmonics and in the way Dime used to play, something that interests me was the sustain of some of his recordings, like cemetery gates, at the end of the song we can really hear the guitar screaming
I used to work for this company in Corona California. I worked with Bill and Becky. Fun.
Love the "chunkiness" of that SD pickup. Definitely sounds darker too.
Glenn Fricker has entered the chat.
Glen fricker is what Reddit mod vibes look like
@@LouzahsolYou gotta insult looks because you can't argue with the facts.
I've tried calling and texting wilde pickups to place an order ,but no help. I'm leaning towards the Bill Lawrence USA now for tone, price and service.
I didn't think I would be able to tell a difference but your comparison test was great and I go with the SD which I have.
Definitely like that DimeBucker a bit more. It jumps right out of the mix!!! Great video homie
I have all three. They're all really good. I had read in an interview with Grady, and he said exactly what Ola said. Dime used them all.
thats how to do pickup comparison . Amazing as always OLA 🤘
my favorite is the seymour duncan ! all sound great but the SD as a little more in my opinions ! great video BTW !
Just had 4 Bill Lawrence L500XL's in our 4 Kramers a few days ago! 👊🏼💪🏼
All sound really good 👍 but the USA is the dirt and grit. Great video. Thanks
Anyone who says they are only good for metal havent played them
Bill & Becky for me. Flipped XL 500 for the win.
Great Comparison Ola!
I used to buy and sell these on ebay 15 years ago. I had a pre-lawsuit LP copy that I put the Bill&Becky in(My personal favorite) and it lit tf UP! I had to convert the pots to 500K but SO worth it!!!
finally the dimebag legend back

Speaking about gear. Make a video from the fender re issue model T. It's one of the heads of me dreams. I liked the first comparison of the first humbucker but also the Seymour Duncan
The video we needed.
dimebucker gives almost an identical pinch harmonics sound but i'd rather choose usa 500xl. this one sounds the best to me
I'm surprised you didn't include the Duncan Distortion neck as well. That was what he used in his FBD ML along with a Dimarzio Super D in the neck.
All very close but something abut that og one that I like.

That USA is the best sounding out of the testing. It seemed to have decent output and a crunchy/tight delivery all rolled into one.
By far, the more notable of the three!
I had a pair of u.s. bill Lawrence in a custom shop jackson some years ago and they kicked ass!
The Duncan Jupiter (6) is closer to the original 500XL.
Also, the Bill and Becky uses an Alnico V magnet.
I think they all sound good, mainly because of that TOAN. Speaking of tone, what about a Dimebag amp head showdown?? Randall/Krank/Dime? I know that there are severe differences between them but it could make for a cool video! Please respong!!
I have Bill Lawrence L-500XXL and L-500XL
XXL has more heaviness and tightly, it's the one of my favorite pickups, so brutal
That extra bass on the Duncan's. THICC
outstanding demo
Looks like I'm one of the few that didn't like the SD; sounded harsh. I'm in on the USA 500XL. Great comparison, Ola 😎🤘
Hey Ola, Please Respong!
How do you get the saxophone and violin sounds heard on your albums? And the ambience around it? It sounds amazing!
All three sound great. My fav is the Dimebucker cuz it's just a nice dirty hot mess but with good dimension.
Ola, great playing and nice reviews. I thought the USA Bill Lawrence L500XL sounded best in this mix. All really good pickups though. What about a Brass Block? The original Floyd came with a Brass block. This changes tone as well.
l500xl is the album sound we all love - 100 proof sounds like Seymor Duncan PUP
I have all of these, they have their different uses and sound best with different amp setups. They're all good.
Before you gave the verdict the 500 XL was the clear winner for me, but it’s probably the construction of the guitar
I've got the same guitar, and still play it nearly every day. 🤘😎
I like em all Ola thanks for the demo U rock!! :o)
I have a bl usa l500xl once in a while I’ll swap it out for something else but eventually I’ll come back to the USA l500xl because it’s got the sound I like
