Thanks friend, I just installed my first winch on my new to me Toyota Tacoma. I came across your video in my search for knowledge and I know Ausies are serious about off road so it's reliable. See ya in the dirt.
Excellent video! Straightforward, something I can do solo, and doesn’t require anything but a tree and a parking brake. Thank you for taking the time to put this out there!
Great video, Tim! So many examples on UA-cam of people doing this incorrectly. Nice to find a thorough and complete explanation of how to do this procedure properly and safely by yourself.

Yeah mate, same here. Have helped out people driving all sorts of makes and models over the years. Thanks mate, greatly appreciate your following and feed back.
Great video Tim. Well explained. I fitted a Carbon 12k on the weekend. This was a second Carbon I've installed recently. I found the rope on the Carbon winches out of the box fouling on the winch tie bars, even when evenly rolled on by hand ( no tension ). Almost as if the drum is too small for the amount of rope. Which is why it's even more important to do as you did to stretch the rope and wind it on under load properly. Cheers !
G'day mate, Yeah the rope from new would be bound on the drum a slightly bigger diameter. So, giving the rope a stretch would help when rolling it back on. Thanks for your feedback mate. Cheers Tim
Yeah mate, it is great fun rivalry between the two badges. Lol But, at the end of the day it doesn't matter what you drive, as long as you are out in the bush using it. Thanks for your feedback mate. Cheers Tim.
Not sure I like the Toyota comment Tim but one day I may meet you on the track and my Toyota may be there to help the Nissan out . Love your work and hope to catch up one day .
Just having a bit of fun with the Toyota thing. Im not fussed what anyone drives, as long as its used in the bush. Hope to catch you in the bush some day mate. Cheers for your feed back.
Hi Tim. Quite sure that you filmed this with a Gopro hero. The chopper sound you hear in the background was in my case covered by warranty. they changed my gopro with no cost. look for gopro chopper sound on youtube. Nice video by the way :)
Haha lol. Not many Toyota drivers did though. Lol. All fun at the end of the day. I don’t care what people drive. Thanks mate for your feedback. Cheers Tim.
So how does this work when you're actually winching? Do you not worry about the rope winding on to the spool correctly? And if not do you then have to re-do this tensioning/respooling operation after each time you winch?
It's all in fun mate about the Toyota thing. I don't care what anyone drives, so long as its used in the bush. The good Ol Toyota - Nissan rivalry is strong and a lot of fun. :-)
G'day mate, It's not necessary to do that while tensioning a new winch rope. But it sure is while using your winch in a real recovery. It allows the winch to cool down before going again for another 30 seconds. Hope that helps mate. Cheers Tim.
Thanks mate. I place the hook on my recovery hook under the bull bar for the moment. Thats not an ideal hook point in case you get stuck nose down and you cant get to your hook. Im looking to bolt a recovery hook on the face of the bull bar, just to mount the winch rope hook on when im finished using it.
Wondering if your hook is ok with a split angle load. Of course it is for this light chore, but full load? I thought open hooks were only for single linear load and a bow shackle was the only thing to trust for a two angle load. Industrial rigging rules I guess. Probably not as big a deal here. Oh, and I bet a soft shackle would be a better choice anyway
@@starmc26 Yeah you could. But it's more about getting the rope fibbers stretch not under full load before you maybe have the weight of a 4WD hanging off the end of it. I appreciate your feedback,

Good tips mate! Haha i love the Toyota/Nissan rivalry! Without it, our trucks wouldn't be any good as each manufacturer would rest on their laurels.

Great video Tim. Do you pull the rope all the way in or should you connect the hook to something like a rated shackle down low.?
Thanks mate.

Im looking to bolt a recovery hook on the face of the bull bar, just to mount the winch rope hook on when im finished using it.
Do you need to “tension” the rope after each use?
No, only on the first time before using it for real.

@@timbates4wdadventures Because the first time you use it, as long as you run it all the way out, you can stretch it then.

I appreciate your feedback,
@@timbates4wdadventures No, the idea is that you don't stretch a portion of the rope and not the whole thing.. it causes bunching, supposedly.
@@starmc26 ahh righto. Not sure I’ve heard that. I’ve just always pretensioned a new rope even more so with cable.
