That was a really well done winch demo. Thanks for the neutral reminder! I forget that sometimes. FYI the red Warn strap is for safety when spooling the line/hook in. The idea is that you NEVER have your hands/fingers anywhere near the fairlead when the hook is approaching its seated position. That winch could crush anything that gets between the hook and fairlead, your fingers included. Warn hopes you’ll hold the red strap and nothing else as the hook approaches its home. Thanks for watching. I have used my winch since doing this method and had no problems! Some people just lean back and use their body weight. I had my wife apply the brakes on the lawn tractor also. I will say it’s best to use the recommended 1000lbs or the tricks weight which is best!
Always wondered....why the need to pretension, when you are going to take almost all the rope off the winch to use it anyway? (in best case scenario) I know your're trying to pre stretch it too, but is it bad to stretch on the first use instead?
Thanks for watching. Sounds like a good idea! Many people have been asking for that for awhile, I do t think they will ever do it because “proper” winch use age wants you outside to make sure the winch line spools correctly. If you just sit in the truck the line could ball all up on one end and mess a lot of stuff up. But great idea when in water..
Nice video. Rookie question: You were making sure that it coiled onto the spool cleanly by pulling it left and right. Is this an issue if you were doing an actual recovery? I've never really heard anybody mention it or act concerned. They just stand back and run the winch (obviously under a lot more tension). In other words, do I have to worry about my winch getting all jumbled up during a recovery? Thanks and cool truck!
No that is a great question… obviously the newer synthetic winch line is much softer and more compliant than the steel line..because there isn’t as much pull on the line while pulling my lawn tractor if I didn’t pull left and right it most likely will get all messed up… now during an actual pull there is a lot of torque on the line which helps it spool to the lowest point which helps it spool on correctly.. the steel cable was better at it than synthetic but still should be just fine.

It is a constant struggle to remember all of the safety aspects of winch recovery but the risk of injury is too high not to (for me). Very true. However with the synthetic winch line is far superior safety wise than the older steel line. I always tell people if you have to winch you did something else wrong first. Winch is last resort. I love land cruisers. I had a 4runner b4 power wagon!
Thanks for watching. I appreciate the info. I dont really see a lot of guys grabbing the red tab instead of the hook. But that does make sense!! Do you have a power wagon?
The strap is to hold while winching the last bit of rope to ensure you don’t lose a finger. The last part of the video your fingers/hand was in a bad spot but holding that strap would’ve kept the hook where you wanted it while keeping yourself safe. Not criticizing though I was just trying to answer your question. Great video.
Thank you for your input. I was new to my truck when I made this video. I have learned a lot and actually made a follow up video of a new winch strap I got after the factory warn winch strap got all faded. ua-cam.com/video/MZciHutXhz4/v-deo.htmlsi=HRd-iCAfe1cF2mUi
My smittybilt winch mentions having 1000lb of *line* tension when winding the winch for the first time. What concerns me is that you're using an approximate 450lb tractor in neutral up a gradual incline, which means that a tiny fraction of that weight is actually being applied to that line in tension. It looks taught but it's so slack that you can obviously guide the line left and right with your hand while it spools. It may not be enough.
Thanks for watching. This video was a demo on what the process was. Like I stated in the video it’s best to use the trucks weight to tension the winch line. Yes my lawn tractor is under weight for a proper tension. My wife could apply the brakes on the tractor causing the line tension to go up quite a bit. Even under 1000lbs of tention you can still guide line to a certain extent. The worst thing you don’t want happening is just tensioning the line and it gets all bound up from not guiding the line making the wraps on the spool uneven etc.
Any thoughts on getting the Warn wireless, Bluetooth, option for the winch? I just saw them on their site and are compatible with yours. If so, would love to see the install of it too. My 75th is shipping to the dealer now, so I’ve been looking for add-ons. Great video thanks!
Thanks for watching. Ive looked into them as well. I’m think about the wireless one with the remote. I haven’t purchased one yet though. Please subscribe I have a lot of power wagon content and may do a future video of the winch controller. Yeah I love the look of the 75th anniversary edition!
@@GReviewz No, I love my sweet tradesman with power wagon package. Bought under 48k new and slowly building it up. Rock sliders and canopy next. Thanks.
Definitely recommend you use a tree. If you get into a tough spot I have seen the cable wrap up on itself. When using a tree I even hold the brakes slightly to ensure the ripe wraps up nicely.
Thanks for watching. I definitely agree! The tighter the better. I was just going over a good how to and giving some options. Do you have a power wagon?
I have a winch on a low profile bumper like the reviewer. The problem with letting the truck provide the tension is one of visibility. The "installer" is squatting down low looking thru the fairlead to make sure the line goes on smooth, while the truck is being pulled toward him - not to mention the installer is also out of sight of the pilot steering the vehicle. That's a potential train wreck... The winches you see on the bumper of Jeeps are very often protruding from a much more forward mounted bumper and less of an issue for the "installer". I have to pull something toward my winch when I properly tension it.
On a side note: If you are forgetful and don't put the winch remote cover back on tightly, your forward sensors will go nuts and you will freak out thinking there are electrical problems. Haha! Don't ask how I know.
Lol. Hey the only way to learn is when it happens. When I first got my truck my dang front sensors would randomly go off. I posted a question on a pw page...they told me the red warm winch lanyard would blow around in the wind and go in front of your parking sensors. I took it off the the random warning stopped.
@@GReviewz Yeah, that remote cover flips up. So, the sensors would only go off under braking, when the cover flipped down. It took me a couple of days to figure that one out. And at that point, I did remove the lanyard too, to prevent that from happening. Haha! Great minds think alike! Actually, I'm not sure I'm comfortable with that stock hook pulling the big, heavy truck. So, I ordered a Factor 55 Ultrahook. Should be here Wednesday. I have to stop spending money on this thing! I might have to live in it soon :)
Lol I wish these company’s would try the stuff in the real world before putting in on vehicles. But it’s ok I like the lanyard on the winch. I have a friend that runs tow trucks and he said the hook on our pw is stronger than it needs to be. Once he said that I was sold on keeping it. Yeah after I purchased my retraxpro tonneau my wife about killed me lol.
@@GReviewz that's good to know about the stock hook strength. We all get caught up in the internet world of perfection and ideals when often, stock works fine. However, the Factor 55 hook will look cool. Haha!
There’s some great safety tips on UA-cam for winching you might want to watch that don’t involve using your hood as a shield you might want to check out
Thank you for your input. A few great off-road experts recommend the hood technique. I’m not sure if you heard about the guy that died as a result of recovering off of a ball hitch. If his hood was open he most likely would have been much better off.
Thanks for watching! Yeah or any place that has enough room to stretch out all the line. It’s recommended to use the whole weight of the truck to tension the line but the lawn mower works ok also!
Nice video but your have one fundamental flaw the line is suppose to wrap around the drum from the bottom not the top as you have it. Surprised no one caught that.
Nope sure don’t. I’ve looked at other power wagons and they are all have rope coming off the top. I sent a email to warn after you commented and they said with the power wagons since it has a narrow fairlead “non roller” that sits closer to top of the winch itself it would put a lot of pressure on rope and fairlead of it came up from bottom. Coming off top is almost a straight shot to fairlead..
It’s the same thing why so many guys at the boat ramp end up in the water… if you just simply put your truck in park and winch on something you will shear the transmission park pin. So it’s better to pop it into neutral and keep your foot on the brake..
Thanks for watching. I tried to make a good video. I love my truck so it was fun. Just out of curiosity what made you click to watch if you don’t have a truck?
Lol awesome. Being a small channel I try and figure out how to get more people to watch my videos. What did you think of the thumbnail pic, video content music in video etc? Or maybe you just like power wagons?
Good presentation and mention of some of the safety points. I’d add to put your truck in high idle too because it will keep the lifters oiled and increase the output of your alternator. Idling for long periods of time isn’t great for the 6.4 Hemi.
Thanks for watching. On the power wagon and standard 6.4 hemi ram trucks there is. I way to manually engage high idle like the Cummins. However on the power wagon they are set up when enough power draw is reached the truck automatically high idles..
@@GReviewz Color me impressed. I honestly didn’t realize that and have never noticed it. That’s really cool. Thanks for the heads up. I heard that Ram had done something within the last couple years to help mitigate the problems with low (normal) idle but I don’t know if it went into production.
Nah bud, to actually tension it run a tree saver around a tree or concrete block and then attach your hook to the tree saver -then winch in using rhe the weight of the vehicle to tension the rope.
@@GReviewz Dude, a ride on mower weighs like 450 lbs max, pulling it you're probably only pulling like 200 lbs of force because it's on wheels. If you have a winch you should have either a tree saver or a recovery rope or both; you can't use your winch without them. You should've been pulling a car or truck to properly tension your line. You need like 800 lbs of pretension on it. And no, if you use your winch it's not because you did something wrong, it's because you're recovering someone or you were really going through some thick mud or snow got stuck and instead of risking damaging your or someone's vehicle you decided to go the gentle route and winch it out.
lovely assistant is thinking: "you didnt tell me that you had a video camera, that its going on youtube with tens of thousands of viewers...or I wouldnt' have had PJs on....lol
My truck came with the synthetic. I will say steel cable is more durable but steel can backlash just like synthetic if you don’t wind it on with some tension…
Thanks for watching. That may be the case but with my trucks setup it’s almost impossible to see the drum at all. When actually using the winch I don’t get anywere near the winch..
That is not enough weight to properly pre-tension it. You should be hooked to a large tree, or another truck, and winching in neutral while slightly applying the brakes. That is per Warn instructions for a 12k winch.
Lol oh dang you got me!! Thanks for watching. The lawn tractor I was towing was not putting enough strain on the line to give it enough kinetic energy to launch. If the hook came undone it would just fall to the ground. Do you have a power wagon?
@@GReviewz I never used a wench before and wondered how they operate. I appreciate your informative demonstration of one. Informative and educational. Thanks! I'll be sure to pop my hood.....lol
Thanks for watching. The reason ram switched to synthetic is because so many people were asking for it. The steel is better for abrasion but that’s about it. Safety, weight, ease of use. Plus the steel if it gets kinked it’s done...
that's like 40 pounds of tension. nicely inflated tires on a smooth driveway? that cable is not tensioned whatsoever. My toddler could push that lawn mower in neutral. at least toss a big 'ol truck tire out on the lawn, and run a hook to the middle and yank that. preferably, hook your actual truck to another truck or a pole and use that!
As stated in my video this was just a demonstration. I’m not defending the lawn mower, it wasn’t a lot of resistance but definitely more than 40 lbs. wife had brakes depressed like 50% and my driveway does have some grade.. yes I have tensioned it with the full weight of the truck hooked to a tree.. thanks for the ideas..
Thanks for watching... lol if your going to go that far you should spend some more and get a side by side... maybe Polaris or Can am!! The best way is just hook winch to tree and tow the whole trucks weight... do you have a power wagon?
Thanks for watching. Lol I guess it depends we’re your from. Yes it’s spelled winch but most people in my circle pronounce it wench. Not sure why we just do. Maybe because I’m originally from Fl and we use the term wench a lot like “sea wench” do you have a power wagon?
Lol true however my vids are meant for people who don’t know the topic. If I do everything in a minute people will be asking me a lot of questions if I go nice and slow and explain it all I don’t get too many questions… which I like… I guess then I get comments about why I took so long…can’t make anyone happy..
With all due respect, the need for a winch is pretty close to zero.....not many people take a high dollar vehicle out "mudding" or ever encounter any other need for it - likely just a good way to get hurt if you don't know what you are doing
Thanks for watching. The winch in general is like an insurance policy. Most people just pay for it and never need it, but when you do you do. I personally have never needed it for myself but I have used it twice on some random guys the we’re stuck. Just remember we are American… how much stuff do you own that isn’t necessary…oh not sure if you know but the power wagon comes with the winch from the factory…
you'd be surprised how many people do just that. it is human nature to push our toys whether drag racing, street racing, rock crawling, or just good ole trail riding. i buried my 60k gladiator so deep i had 3 inches of muddy water in my floor boards because I didnt think I was gonna get stuck and didnt have anyone close to pull me out. winch is being installed this weekend so I dont have to worry about it.
I’ve had a winch on my Jeep for 5 years and wheel pretty aggressively. I’ve never needed the winch for myself but it’s there for worst case or if I need to help someone else that I can’t get out with a strap/Bubba Rope.

Already sub’d 😁
Awesome thank you.
Nicely done. Thanks.
Thank you for watching. Are you in the market for a power wagon?
@@GReviewz No, I love my sweet tradesman with power wagon package. Bought under 48k new and slowly building it up. Rock sliders and canopy next. Thanks.
Awesome your truck is really the best bang for your. Buck truck you can get...is it a 4th or 5th gen?
@@GReviewz 2021. White. Love it. Keep the videos coming. Thanks.
Will do. Go check out the channel I have more power wagon related vids. Please consider subscribing...
Good thing you added that extra counterweight to the lawnmower!
😂 thanks for watching. Yeah my wife was like wtf...I needed someone to keep the thing going straight...
@@GReviewz not yet. I have a wrangler rubicon on 37’s with a warn 10s.
Very nice. What year?
I have a winch on a low profile bumper like the reviewer. The problem with letting the truck provide the tension is one of visibility. The
"installer" is squatting down low looking thru the fairlead to make sure the line goes on smooth, while the truck is being pulled toward him - not to mention the installer is also out of sight of the pilot steering the vehicle.
Haha!
@@GReviewz I like the lanyard too but didn't want it to get stolen. :)
Great Video
Nicely done, i was thinking to do the same with my riding mower only thing missing is the long driveway 🙂
Thanks for watching! Yeah or any place that has enough room to stretch out all the line. It’s recommended to use the whole weight of the truck to tension the line but the lawn mower works ok also!
The red tag is to pull out line so you don’t get fingers pinched in the hook
Thanks for the information. I mean I get it but I normally grab the hook anyway..
Thanks good info
Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoyed it!!
I tried this and I can't get the rope to line up perfectly lol.
Thanks for watching. What do you mean line up correctly? You mean like while you are spoiling it back on?
Nice video but your have one fundamental flaw the line is suppose to wrap around the drum from the bottom not the top as you have it. Surprised no one caught that.
Nope sure don’t. I’ve looked at other power wagons and they are all have rope coming off the top. I sent a email to warn after you commented and they said with the power wagons since it has a narrow fairlead “non roller” that sits closer to top of the winch itself it would put a lot of pressure on rope and fairlead of it came up from bottom. Coming off top is almost a straight shot to fairlead..
I still don’t get it why I should put the PW on Neutral when using it..
It’s the same thing why so many guys at the boat ramp end up in the water… if you just simply put your truck in park and winch on something you will shear the transmission park pin. So it’s better to pop it into neutral and keep your foot on the brake..
Great vid!) thx
Thanks for watching. I’m glad you found the video helpful! Please like and subscribe. Do you have a power wagon?
I don’t own a truck but this was very entertaining
Thanks for watching. I tried to make a good video. I love my truck so it was fun. Just out of curiosity what made you click to watch if you don’t have a truck?
Idk I just watch random stuff I find in my recommendations
Lol awesome. Being a small channel I try and figure out how to get more people to watch my videos. What did you think of the thumbnail pic, video content music in video etc? Or maybe you just like power wagons?
The thumbnail was pretty great and straightforward and the music was amazing and really overall it was pretty entertaining.
Awesome thanks for the positive feedback. I appreciate it..Please if you don’t mind likeing the video and subscribing to our channel...
You can't remove the strap from the hook because it's easy to lose it that way :-)
Lol kind of like my 10mm socket 😂
You’re supposed to hold the red strap instead of holding the hook when the cable is winding in
I’ve always been used to the hooks not having the strap on them…thank you though!
I wish they included a wireless controller.
I agree totally.. but you know it’s about the bottom line these days…
Thanks for watching. Man I said that option on the video. some people dont have trees or tree savers. I talk about different methods.
The best way to pre tension rope is to use steel cable instead. Then you don't have to fuck with all that bullsh!t.
My truck came with the synthetic. I will say steel cable is more durable but steel can backlash just like synthetic if you don’t wind it on with some tension…
If you can’t see the drum while winching under load without getting your face near the line your winch is not safe.
Thanks for watching. That may be the case but with my trucks setup it’s almost impossible to see the drum at all. When actually using the winch I don’t get anywere near the winch..
Make sure you have some gloves with you, but do Not wear them! 😂
lol I’m glad you caught that. Do as I say not as I do…
That is not enough weight to properly pre-tension it. You should be hooked to a large tree, or another truck, and winching in neutral while slightly applying the brakes. That is per Warn instructions for a 12k winch.
Thanks for watching. I did say that in the video. I was just showing other options that are better than not doing it at all.
He didn't pop the hood when wenching as suggested!
Lol oh dang you got me!! Thanks for watching. The lawn tractor I was towing was not putting enough strain on the line to give it enough kinetic energy to launch. If the hook came undone it would just fall to the ground. Do you have a power wagon?
@@GReviewz I don't. But thinking about getting one. I had to call you out.....lol
I mean the truck is great. I did say I recommend the hood up when recovering an actual vehicle. Lol
@@GReviewz I never used a wench before and wondered how they operate. I appreciate your informative demonstration of one. Informative and educational. Thanks! I'll be sure to pop my hood.....lol
Awesome. The power wagon is a great truck and I highly recommend it. Just hope the gas prices don’t get too high.
I hate that it's a nylon rope and not a steel cable.
Thanks for watching. The reason ram switched to synthetic is because so many people were asking for it. The steel is better for abrasion but that’s about it. Safety, weight, ease of use. Plus the steel if it gets kinked it’s done...
Rope is actually stronger and won't snap back if it breaks
Alright!?
Thanks for watching. I hope the video helped…alright!?
that's like 40 pounds of tension. nicely inflated tires on a smooth driveway? that cable is not tensioned whatsoever.
Great, now I have to go buy a tractor.
Thanks for watching... lol if your going to go that far you should spend some more and get a side by side... maybe Polaris or Can am!! The best way is just hook winch to tree and tow the whole trucks weight... do you have a power wagon?
@@GReviewz I have a Yamaha YXZ and a Power Wagon 👍🏻
Awesome. What year pw?
Umm... it’s a winch, not a wench. Otherwise, great video.
Thanks for watching. Lol I guess it depends we’re your from. Yes it’s spelled winch but most people in my circle pronounce it wench. Not sure why we just do. Maybe because I’m originally from Fl and we use the term wench a lot like “sea wench” do you have a power wagon?
Ha! Yeah, I guess we all talk different. Just bought a PW in April, so I appreciated the video. Keep them coming!
Thank you. What color did you get?
@@GReviewz Red. Wasn’t my first choice, but have come to love it. I really like your blue
Red is classic power wagon color though. My first choice was the blue but red was my second.
If the line snaps it will fall to the ground. Its a nylon rope not a cable
Yes sir I do understand the nylon vs steel cable. I was more or less doing a video based on what warn recommends. Do you have a power wagon?
Alright
Thanks for watching! Do you have a power wagon? Or a winch? Or just pointing I say alright a good amount?
@@GReviewz I have a PW and I was poking fun at the alright😁 but thank you for the video
15 minutes for a winch stretch demo? That's like a 10 minute video on making ice cubes! Lol!
Lol true however my vids are meant for people who don’t know the topic. If I do everything in a minute people will be asking me a lot of questions if I go nice and slow and explain it all I don’t get too many questions… which I like… I guess then I get comments about why I took so long…can’t make anyone happy..
@@GReviewz Bless you for taking the time...
It looks bad azz though.
@@GReviewz How many of us have house/fire insurance for hundreds of $ a year and never use it or hope to use it.
I’ve had a winch on my Jeep for 5 years and wheel pretty aggressively. I’ve never needed the winch for myself but it’s there for worst case or if I need to help someone else that I can’t get out with a strap/Bubba Rope.
humkay
Thanks for watching. Hope you enjoyed. Okay!
@@GReviewz i enjoyed it okay , thanks okay !
And Great job acting all safe, no glasses no gloves. SMH
Thanks for watching. I did say in the beginning to be safe wear gloves etc.
You shouldn’t remove your strap from the hook as it is easy advertising for the Winch manufacturer 🫠
Lol. I’m fine advertising for warn! Plus only real truck/off-road people know what the power wagon or a winch is anyway..
