    In this video I'll show you how to fix a broken synthetic winch rope with a pen, its a simple process that once you know how to do, will only take about 5 minutes for the whole repair. Plus its one of those awesome tricks that one day you will be able to impress your friends with out on the trail!

      You can splice end to end if you un lace a foot or so of the strands and weave them back together. Rope is so much better. So much more you can do. And it’ll never stab you

    You should stagger where you cut the strands to get a properly tapered bury. Cutting it blunt like you did creates a sharp transition resulting in a weaker splice.... plenty of line manufacturers have guides for proper single braid splicing.

    I do this using 7K winch line for my climbing sticks. I do it a bit different, where you went thru twice in the main rope, I only go once, then create a hole in the tag line instead large enough to pull the loop thru then snake the tag line inside the main line, finishing it like you do. Pulling the loop like I do physically twists the rope. No idea if better or worse, just a different.

    Awesome video Matt. First, yes on a steel line. Second, say your rope snaps n there's 15 or 20 feet of line or more still on the hook. How effective would that be at connecting the line back to itself? So you don't lose that 20 feet of line

    • @bleepinjeep

      Great point! Heres a good video on that... it takes alot more time and effort however! ua-cam.com/video/rIxdFn5A9ho/v-deo.html. I would be more inclined to do my method on both ends and just connect the two back together. At least until you got off the trail and then splice them after you get home. Also, with the way I show, you can easily undo it when you get home.

    • @benmiller5015

  • @jackwilfong6628
    @jackwilfong6628 3 роки тому +4

    1) Not tapering the buried end reduces your overall strength more than you might think (watch HowNotToHighline's Amsteel break test videos).
    2) The factory splice that came on your winch line looks like a locked brummel. A locked brummel splice is almost as easy to do and is much more secure than the splice shown in this video.
    Thanks for all the great vids.

    I just tried it. It all looked good, but if you pull on one side of the loop, it just pulls out. So you have to insure you are pulling on the middle of the loop? I think. What going on?
    Thanks.
    Edit: This is not correct. The right way to do it is to run the entire loop through the second time. Your first and third steps are correct. Second step is not. The way you have will not hold at all.

    I think you are misleading us! That pen does not look like the ones you linked to in the description! What else are you hiding from us?! :P
