One time I decided to venture out to an off-road park alone. I met with the owner and explained I just picked up a 2000 4runner and wanted to explore the stock limits, he was super nice and just said have a go at it. He did however explain he was very busy setting up courses for an off-road club to come and try that afternoon, I assured him I wouldnt push it too hard as I was alone anyway and I do not have a winch. Well after going through the property on level 1 trails, I somehow found myself cobble crawling up creeks, and bogging in the forest to which I decided to follow a sign around a tree and PLOPPED my whole body down to the frame into a truck sized bog hole. I had to go do the whole walk of shame across the entire property, owner watched me walk across the field the whole way. Full smiles when I finally get to him, he already knows he said. Such a nice guy, both of us hopped into his Carburated Chevy K20 on 40" tires, explained how his truck belonged to a friend who died and it was one of the things he remembers him by and some war stories from Vietnam. It was pitiful how easy it was for a 85' K20 to pull my "small" 4wd out. The guy's name was Joe he told me and welcomed me back anytime if I wanna get stuck again hahha. Please get out there and enjoy these types of folks while they are here.. He converted his whole personal property and fought with gov. bodies to establish the park; whole expeirance and getting completely stuck 10/10, wish I had a winch but at the same time I would have never met Joe.

During the recent floods in northern NSW I managed to get my ute stuck worse than it's ever been... in my front yard.. with a whole street of spectators.
The flood water had made the grass softer than first thought and I was COMPLETELY stuck. Eventually a legend came along in his 79 and winched me out. Having my own winch definitely would of saved my ego that day!

When I first moved to my current house, I parked my loaded 24ft caravan on the back lawn, being used to hard ground. Unfortunately, after a few hours, it had sunk down to the spring shackles. The ground was mush, just under the surface, as I found out. I had my ranger in 4WD, with the diff lock on, and was still struggling to pull out the caravan, and made a huge mess of the lawn while doing it. If I had been able to winch pull, then I'd likely not have needed to spend weeks fixing the lawn. Neighbours must have been laughing at me.

LOL, I did the same thing when I brought my Patrol and camper trailer to my new house. I did not realise that the entire backyard was mush and managed to bog both badly enough that I ended up just leaving them both there for 3 months until the yard dried out. Fortunately normal access was from the front driveway so they were not in the way!

I have done more damage to 4WDs in my own driveways than anywhere else, strangely. At a previous bush property I managed to slide off the driveway and get stuck between two trees.

A few weeks ago I had an electrical issue with my winch, causing the terminals to get extremely hot, melt and nearly catch fire. We disconnected everything to ensure it was safe but then obviously left winch-less for the remainder of the trip on the tracks at Lithgow, having many instances where the winch would have been used but couldn't... Had to resort to snatching instead where it was often a challenge to get a vehicle in front where it was needed. I really felt the struggle of not having a winch and am now on the hunt for a new one, and this Drive Tech one would suit me perfectly!

On Graham’s recommendation I purchased a Isuzu dmax for that perfect daily and tourer combination late last year.
With minimal modifications under my belt, wheels, bullbar and free wheel hubs I hit the tracks with the boys for a weekend.
The place we visited was a our and back track type setup where you explored downhill for a while and to return you had to make your way back up hill.
Over confident with my abilities as I had it easy downhill I opted to be lead vehicle on the return journey.
With 500 metres left to go I had a large rock slope and trench that I had to get up, and just couldn’t pass the obstacle slowly under control. Only missing by about a metre each time.
A winch would have easily given me the last metre I would have needed to pass the rock slope.
Over confident in my cars capability (thanks Graham!) my driving ability and Not wanting to be the butt of all jokes at the campsite later I opted the full send it attitude, good bye front left CV.
After 10 maxtrax and packing like crazy for the next 500m with assistance from the boys I limped the car back to camp. I owed too many beers and wore the jokes all night.
I winch could have saved me the torture.
Save me from this happening again Jocko

Took the kids and the dog out for a day trip to julimar state forest in the 90 series prado thinking we'd have a BBQ lunch and explore some tracks.
After being out most of the day and getting carried away with following different tracks I figured it would be easier and quicker to keep going and come out the other side of the forest. Boy was I wrong...... We came to a section of the track that looked impassible due to the mud so decided to turn around and try a different way.
As I backed the car up off the track to turn around and chucked it in drive I felt the rear wheels sink in and the hard top crust had broken and revealed a muddy cesspool!
Long storey shorter, ended up having to walk an hour through the bush to higher ground to get phone reception to call a mate. By this stage it's dark and cold and the kids and dog were looking at me like, ("how could you do this to me").
About 2 hours later he arrives and snatches us out. Talk about a relief!
5 min up the track though the ground was getting wetter and wetter and my mate got stuck so I snatched him out backwards. Then another 5 min later we both got stuck down to the chassis!
We tried everything but the mud was like cement!
He ended up contacting one of his mates and we awaited his arrival.
Just as we thought he was a no show 3am ticked over and we were half asleep in the cars when we saw the headlights through the forest and he'd arrived with the cavalry, wahoo!
All I was thinking was if I just had a winch I would have been out of the first bog in 5 min and on my way!

The best time I could've used a winch is when I was at stockton lake, Collie. Thought a puddle looked doable... turns out it wasn't! My mate quickly turned around to snatch me out which nearly broke his 4wd due to how boggy the mud at the bottom of the "puddle" was. Ended up getting it out, snapped off my custom plate which sunk into the mud and was lost forever AND the car was written off! Now have just bought my dad's Ford Ranger and taken it under my wing to upgrade to an awesome rig so a winch and recovery set would be amazing so I don't have another written off 4WD!!! Love your videos guys keep up the amazing work :)

DEFINITELY COULD HAVE (Ha Ha) used when my friends Grand Vitara slipped into a washout and was teetering on the verge of rolling. If he had any more Go he would have been on his roof. I finally got him back on his wheels after using a sketchy RATCHET WINCH! I was praying that it didn't snap with each stroke ever tightening. Some how he didn't stop laughing or smiling through the whole experience as he sat clinging to his door. Lessons learnt that day :)

Should of had a winch, a few years ago I was driving a local beach in far north Qld there was a cyclone buzzing along the coast out from where we were, l crossed a small creek mouth but just as I got halfway across my clutch decided to slip (it burnt out ) on me stopping me in my tracks the tide was starting to come back in and the waves were bloody huge, if I had a winch I could of saved the rig, all I could do was tie it up to a tree and walk out to get help when I finally got back to my rig hours later it was facing out to sea and buried up to the windows in sand we got her out and towed it home, hosed it out and got it going again, bloody pummel stones where in every nock and cranny even in the ceiling light, a month later we did the Fraser island run in the old girl and got it bogged at Eli creek but a least there was help on hand the old Hilux gave up about 12 months later died of cancer should have had a winch

As soon as a got my ps I went on a camping trip with the boys. We went down this sketchy as old fire trail which the floods had completely eroded. I made it down fine ish and we all had a great night, anyway it pissed down all through the night and when it had come to leave I hand to turn around, and the only spot I could turn around was this boggy little corner. I ended up getting completely stuck, even after digging out a track and lining it with sticks and bark for traction. I thought I was going to have to leave my Ute there until it dried out. But thankfully I guy up the road came and pulled me out in a triton with a spear wheel on none the less. I was shocked he made it out. Essentially I wish I had a winch on me because it would have made that whole situation a lot easier and less stressful

I desperately needed an electric winch when I got our MU-X stuck up a slippery hill in the Snowy Mountains. We took a wrong turn, ignored the danger / turn back signs and sure enough it started raining and we got stuck up a long steep hill. We were on our own and hadn't seen a car for almost 2 days. We were lost and badly stuck. We ended up spending almost 6 hours of hand winching to move the vehicle forwards (up-hill), backwards (down-hill) and even 180 degrees to turn it around on the track. As if the punishment of getting stuck in the middle of nowhere was bad enough, 6 hours of hand winching helped reinforce our bad decision. Whilst I'm glad we had the hand winch, we still don't have an electric winch and could definitely do with one!

hooly dooly do I have a story for you boys. picture this Vic high country, July 2019, bright red triton and a couple stock cruisers wet as a the pissa floor in a brothel. We come across these closed road signs and the adventure-seeking blokes we were decided to drive around them. the first 2km of this track was beautiful not even me driveway was this glorious wasn't a pothole, stick, rock, or stump in sight unusual for victoria but no complaints, anyway the ol' red bitsashitty come around the corner and there was this rock pretty sure it was the rock that fell out the sky and killed the dinosaurs. The Uluru himself would've been scared of this big bastard but being the wannabe F1 driver I am I drifted around this thing scraping the tub on the nearby native floora leaving me pinned against a rock and a hard place. with me dacks packed seeking some bog roll I jumped out and realised there's the grand canyon of the VIC high country next to me. As I was walking around the side of the shitbox Mitsubishi calls a triton she started to slide, slide like the shit slid out of me arse just prior. the boys saw the old girl slide and swiftly come to assist with two 60kg blokes holding me pride and joy on this cliff I jumped back in the cockpit and gave her hell, as you could imagine it sounded awesome but did pretty close to f**k all. we were there for hours using stumps, sticks, blokes and all 80 horney ponies the old girl had, it was no use so we tired her up to the nearest tree and let her sit for the night. a few angry cans and some black fishes were consumed that night and a game plan was developed. we would get one of the Toyotas and wrap the snatch around a tree which will pull the arse end towards the rock it worked said the bluey it was like he was surprised that the plan a few cockys put together on the piss worked. anyway with all 4s on the track we slowly dragged her out backwards we thought it was over but then two cruisers had to execute a 43 point turn to get facing the other way so an hour later we were on our way back to the main road as we came back down the track we put the close road signs back on the road. and now just imagine how much easier this shit show would've been if I had one of those big flash turny things that gets ya unbogged. would've just hooked her up to the tree in front and slowly inched her around the rock and we would've been outta there in a quick jiffy. anyway long story short I need one of those spinny things on the front of ol red. thanks for listening boys and girls.

Winch would've come in mighty handy quite a few times, I'll tell you about the 2 of them! I was having a play in some small dips that had filled with water on a cleared grass area and all was well and fun, all of a sudden I flexed out and dug myself a hole, was in quite a remote area, so me and my then pregnant partner had to walk about 3km in the rain to get phone signal (that I had to climb a sign for) to ring for help, but to no avail, help had to come back with a 4wd tractor to drag me out after trying with their 2010 hilux. Next was a time I was gathering firewood, been to through these same uphill ruts 100 times without any major issues, this one day it had been raining and could not get up no matter how hard I tried, anyway, hit it so hard and fast I bounced out of the rut and into a never ending soft spot, and boy oh boy was I stuck! The recovery car that I called to come winch me out had to anchor himself to a tree! Anyways hope someone gets a laugh from these to experiences, lots more to tell but couldn't narrow it down to one! Keep safe everyone!

My group of mates were all so keen to go out and 4wd but at the time i had the only capable 4wd rig, so not thinking that the tracks would be as soft as they were we set out and managed to get ourselves stuck axle deep in soft sand (winch woulda been handy as there were trees on either sides of the track). We ended up spending the next 2.5 hours on hands and knees with a single shovel digging a path out for the rig until she finally made it to some more hard track. It was a pain but you gotta do what you gotta do with what you got i suppose :)

Long story short, one wrong turn and the old work ute fell off the side of the track and down the cliff face (about a 10ft drop) 2 blown front tyres and no winch, we weren’t going anywhere fast. 3 days later, the carton of beers long gone, a lot of walking through the bush, a visit from the local ranger, police and every surfer passing though we managed to track down a bloke with a 6 wheeler ex army truck with a crane of the back to skull drag the old work ute up the cliff! Safe to say the boss wasn’t too happy about the state of the work ute on Monday! 😂

Gday Jocko, the day I was out the back of Orbost in Victoria I really needed a winch, simply river crossing in water around 400mm deep there was a log I didn’t see, the front went over no problem but the spring hangers hit and by the time I went to go backwards it was show over, well a phone call to a mate with a winch and 3hr wait I got out, great video as always mate. Cheers

I got the rig stuck and I ended up using an 1800's style winch which consisted of a rope tied around a rock with three guys manually rolling the rock. Imagine if I had a Drivetech 12,000 pound winch, a three-day recovery would have been a three-minute recovery!

A winch definitely may have helped when I had to try recover a mates ute from a very solid bog hole. Some other guys had already ripped off the front factory recovery points trying to get him out so all I could do was snatch from the rear. Broke the strap at both ends. Had to come back the next day and the ute had to be lifted out with an excavator. So maybe a winch wouldn't have done it, but would've saved me from some solid whiplash.

He drove his patrol into a mudpit and got it stuck on its diffs with the wheels spinning freely in the ruts. I tried to snatch him out using my ranger but I could barely move it given how stuck he was and how thick the clay was. Well it went to baby poo in no time flat and I'm doing a U turn licktysplit and down we went, 100m from solid ground. No winch, no max tracks, nothing. Needless to say it was a long night collecting rocks from 1km away to no avail. Called the old man at 7am. He comes out with 150m of cable, still no luck 3 attemps later. At midday, a tow truck comes out and burys his tilt tray back into the sand and drags me out with his 10T winch for $250, $350 if I wanted a receipt, lol.

About 40 years ago I had an FJ40 and was driving around Walhalla with some friends I was leading, and started to drive down one off the Deep Creek tracks as I went past the point of not being able to reverse back up I realized it was to steep so I had to go down. At the bottom I could not find a way out the other side so I committed to try to get back up the way I came, needless to say I got stuck halfway up, none of the convoy had a winch so we had to use a Tirfor to try and pull me back up. In the end I burnt the clutch out trying to help make it easier on the Tirfor, so we ended up tying my car to a tree to stop it rolling back and went into Walhalla to try and get some help, that's were it stayed overnight. The next day with the help of a local with a C1300 International truck and about 300 meters of steel cable and 14 hours we got the cruiser to the top of the hill.

A winch would most definitely be an advantage for us when we toured the cape solo. Lacking a winch and being solo limited us to attack tracks that we were confident we could get through, thus we missed doing the Frenchmans track which was on our bucket list but due to rain prior to our arrival it wasn't a viable option. Its still most definitely on the bucket list once we install a winch.

The ground is normally very hard, but at Easter a mates 4wd broke through the grass on the surface and sunk to its chassis after other cars had driven over the same spot. We only had 2 recovery tracks and a shovel, plus a snatch strap. After lots of digging in the sticky mud we managed to snatch it out. As there wasn't much room for snatching a winch would have made it a simple recovery. A winch would also be great piece of mind for future camping trips with my family.

About 10 years back a friend and I decided to take a “short cut” through a short bit of bush about 10 at night, low and behold my mate slipped into some ruts and we went straight down to the axles. After 4 hours of chocking, digging and getting covered in mud we had to walk a few kms down the road to get a mate to two us out. Our 5 minute short cut cost us 5 hours and one hell of an adventure.

    @kimber3865 2 роки тому

the highest level of load resistance your vehicle will face will be 3 times it's weight. you do not need to account for gravity, incline, surface friction coefficient.
to determine the minimum winch capacity you should use for your rig you want to be able to perform a 3:1 mechanical advantage (triple line) as the worse case scenario. that means you will be utilizing 2 tackles (pulleys) which will add additional 10% of tackle resistance per tackle based on your load resistance.
In order to safety recovery your rig the fall line force must be lesser than the winch(and winch components) capacity.
Practical example for a 3:1 (triple line)
    4000lb rig x 3 resistance = 12 000lb load resistance
    12 000lb resistance x 20% (2 tackles)= 2400lb additional tackle resistance
    12 000lb + 2400lb = 14 400lb total load resistance.
    14 400lb / 3 mechanical advantage= 4800lb fall line force
you must have a winch (and winch components) that has a rating greater than 4800lb to safely recover your rig with a 3:1 mechanical advantage in the worse case scenario (completely bogged down)
Practical example for a 2:1 (double line) if you do not wish to require extensive amount of line to recover.
    4000lb rig x 3 resistance = 12 000lb load resistance
    12 000lb resistance x 10% (2 tackles)= 1200lb additional tackle resistance
    12 000lb + 1200lb = 13 200lb total load resistance.
    13 200lb / 2 mechanical advantage= 6600lb fall line force
you must have a winch(and winch components) that has a rating greater than 6600lb to safely recover your rig with a 2:1 mechanical advantage in the worse case scenario (completely bogged down)
most videos of people utilizing winches of stuck vehicle dangerously pass the Working Load Limit (WLL) of their winch (and winch component) equipment. The Working Load Limit is 1/3 of the breaking limit of the equipment. So self recovery equipment with 6000lb working load limits will have a breaking limit of 18 000lb under normal conditions. Because of this many people put wear and strain on their equipment without realizing the dangers that they are putting themselves. It will work for a couple times until the wear eventually takes over and the line snaps.
You want to ensure that the fall line force is lower than the working load limit of every portion of the winch equipment. (winch, line, hook, straps, shackles, chains)
You are able to change the fall line force by raising the mechanical advantage. It is however unnecessary as the most you will require is a 3:1 mechanical advantage, unless you are utilizing a severely undersized winch for the job.

For some silly reason I took my young family 4wd touring when my kids were 2 1/2 and about 6 months. We were following trip notes, and in what I would now describe as a lack of sleep phase I turned left instead of right. We 4wd up the hill noting to my unimpressed wife, it’s a bit slippery and I’d hate to miscalculate and drop into the ruts. What happened next is I cracked through the top layer and slid sidewards into the ruts, couldn’t move forward, couldn’t go backwards. By this stage Master 6 months needed a feed. So got the family out…through the passenger windows, set mum and bub up to breastfeed. For the next FOUR hours I hand winched out of that mess. It has been the one and only time I have used that Tirfor Hand Winch. So…after getting us back on the track completely exhausted…I reversed back down the hill………straight into a tree 🤦‍♂️….that guys is why I need a winch to go back and tackle that hill 22 years later 🤣

Probably the best recovery video ive ever seen. But id like to add. You touched on kinetic recovery. But were way off on how that works. If u have a 15mtr snatch strap. You literally need to use 75% of it for it to work properly. Meaning a 15mtr snatch. You should have read of recovery vehicle 4mtrs from stuck vehicle. And absolutely plant it to use all kinetic energy. If thats too crazy. Always winch. Too often people are quick to snactch and dont do it properly.
Should also touch on what static recovery is.
Great video!! Just thought od put my 2cents in

Like many of the stories here, a winch would have saved my old prado from a drowning
A few years ago, me and mate, plus his dad went for a scope for some cliff fishing down in the Fitzgerald River National Park. We'd taken the week off work, and the first day in we went to plan where we might go.
We only took my car, and on the way out it was sensational, pushing in through some old tracks and found a few really promising spots.
The way home however, took a bold route through a muddy puddle and boy was it deep. First time I've felt a 4wd float. Immediately tried to reverse out but no luck.
The water was up to the door handles and and so my mate and his dad jumped out the windows and grabbed the 2 TRED tracks out. We tried for about 10minutes with no luck, it was suctioned to the bottom like nothing else. Finally had both him and his dad on the back left hand corner, rocking the car with the water sloshing over the centre console, and we got the traction to get out backward. How it kept running was a mystery but damn I thanked the Toyota gods for smiling.
Once out, stopped and got the soaked air-filter out and let it dry for a good hour. Finally got it in, started and limped home. Sadly it was an economic write-off, with the salty water electrical gremlins causing havoc.
Damn with a winch it would have been out in a minute. Few lessons learnt, ALWAYS CHECK THE LINE PROPERLY. Don't let the emotion get in the way of actually planning what ya gotta do.
Now setting up for trip around Aus with my partner for '23 and boy would a winch and recovery set-up make me a more confident boy haha don't want a repeat of it!

Got my 80 series about a year ago, took it out bush with a mate literally the weekend I got it. My mate went through soft mushy black mud, 76 series, 3” lift on 35s. Breezed through it. I went through on a sagged 2” and 31s. Bogged straight down to the chassis. Tried snatching from the front and rear but nothing worked (neither of us had winches) after 4 hours of digging and trying to snatch I was still stuck. My mates partner called her uncle who come out in a 79 WITH a winch and finally got out after another 2 hours of winching. Safe to say it’ll be handy having a winch 😅

Glasshouse Mountains are my local, I’m wheeling an n60 Lux on 31s. I can’t think of a trip when I didn’t need a winch! Probably most memorably though, the day when I was fully bottomed out of south powerlines, a bit difficult to drive when all 4 wheels are in the air! Thank goodness for mates who wheel with you

Now if this was a Shauno vid it would be about how to get your 4WD stuck, and in need of recovery...🤣
PS - I need a winch to practice Jock's recovery techniques...

That time I parked just off the gravel track on the way to Gibraltar rock. All looked fine but the Landy sunk to the chassis in seconds after stopping. Broke the crust. Couldn't dig it out, was like soup and maxtrax didn't work. Worst part was having a large tree directly in front of the car about 10m away. Had to walk to get Signal and call a mate out for rescue... Should of had a winch...

I really could’ve done with a winch on my first proper 4WD trip. After several days of heavy rain, all the tracks in the Vic High Country were barely drivable. I found myself in my 80 series with bald 31” AT’s, trying to make it down a huge hill with a sheer drop only meters away. After the slowest and most terrifying drive of my life, I managed to get the old bus down the hill (with the very limited driving skills I had) whilst I came very close to going off the edge, and nearly sliding into the back of my mates Hilux. If I had a winch, I could’ve winched off of any 1 of the millions of trees in the high country, using the trees as an anchor, could’ve saved the stress and a new set of pants 😂

Went to a small track, about 200 meters, with my mum to show her how the 106 went. It had rained for the last week straight. Poked my head up the track looked easy enough, mum was keen. Rounded a corner to a 10 meter bog hole that didn’t even look like it had water in it, was just thick as mud. I was in high range going a bit too fast to stop so I tried to push through it. My poor old A/T’s we’re looking more like drag slicks at this point. Got about halfway through until we stopped moving and the wheels were spinning like crazy. We spent about 6 hours trying to pack logs under the tyres, to no avail, until my brother finally got off work and came to the rescue and snatched us out. Bloody winch would’ve got us out in about 2 minutes. Sorry mumma ❤️

My first ever 4WD trip as a kid in dad’s brand new “unboggable” Range Rover back in the 80’s. Coorong in SA, soft wet sand, bogged to the eyeballs. We were all digging and digging. Mum had to walk for hours to find another 4WD to help out. We only just got out before the tide got us. A winch and a spare wheel or dead-man would have sorted us out.
