Hey man I’m writing this as my j37 just blew up man 😢kinda what happened with you, on the highway and just stopped and now there’s a puddle of oil here on the side of the road and I have a Crankshaft position sensor “A” code aswell I wonder what happened 😢I met you couple weeks back Kamshaft at the bimmerfest and here I am today…
Is the 3.5 more reliable then? You would just lose out on the awd. I did a valve adjustment in my thing and I might have a bad rear camshaft as it has a ticking type sound
The 3.5 is in all the accords too and i owned a 2012 v6 accord with the 3.5…not a single fucking issue what so ever.. even waited once on a oil change for 6 months and car ran smooother then butter.. only thing is ur losing the awd
@@hamzakhawaja5035 How would you lose the awd? If the engine bolts up to the transmission, I would assume the awd hardware is still there. Serious question. I’m actually considering swapping to a 3.5 on my awd manual if it ever came to that (it’s burning oil; 3.5 does not have that issue) Also, I read that the heads from the 3.7 would fit on the 3.5.
Damm I'm about to purchase a 2010-13 ZDX it has the 3.7 engine. Now Im having second thoughts. I noticed Honda discontinued this engine and went back to the 3.5.
@@edd7iee Well, not really, regardless of maintenance they have issues with the piston rings carboning up that cause excessive oil consumption & thus require a new set of pistons and rings/ full engine teardown, would you call that reliable? The one that blew up in this video had new pistons & rings put in at just over 100,00km. To further add to that they also suffer from oil contamination issues and eat camshafts, I'm sure the fact that most of these engines burn insane amounts of oil & are running low does net help with keeping the camshafts in good shape.
There are gazzlions of MDX’s on USA roads with this engine driven by ladies and no issues. Overall its good engine if you use quality syn oil every 5K fill at tier 1 gas stations with premium and do timing belt every 100K. My wife has almost 300k miles on her 2007 Acura MDX we got new. Does not burn ant oil in 5K miles OCI.
I just did all 3 engine mounts and two transmission mounts thinking this would stop my car from that slight jerk feeling when shift the car into DRIVE. Sometimes it doesn't jerk. Can anyone explain what's the issue I'm having? I think the feeling sometimes happens when shifted to REVERSE as well. I have a 2013 Acura TL SH-AWD 3.7L automatic
As I'm writing this the car has 102,006 miles on it and the issue is still current and you might be wrote unfortunately. How much do you think I'd be looking at overall in cost for either issue?
I really appreciate all the information I found out though this video and your amazing fans and their questions. I have the 4th gen tl 3.7l and I love it, I had it for a pretty decent while it has around 230,000 miles 😮 yeah I know that’s a lot but it’s been excellent until it started running bad and I found out the oil pump is leaking on the timing belt with labor and the parts it’s about $2000 to fix should I swap the engine or get the problem fixed?
I appreciate this comment! If your engine does not burn large amounts of oil and sounds healthy (no Loud ticking while idling) good idea to get the oil pump swapped out, ask for quotes around other shops or even try to find a private mechanic online for a cheaper price that knows his way around these engines.
My engine was really bad ticking at udel and definitely belt was gone and retinsoninerr and all..blew on me yesterday and now im in this situation only without a swapped motor yet.. lets just say gets a new engine! if the ticking is bad cause i know for sure it will come later or might as well swap but swap for better not worse lol plus ur at 230k probably to give it a new heart u know
Oil usage was monitored and the engine also had a rebuild 100,000km prior to blowing up. Suspect the motor blew due to extended oil change intervals and not using premium gas, causing the rings to carbon up, burn oil & cause pre-ignition thus beating to rod bearing to death
@@Kamshaft it’s $$ painful, but I use premium religiously! The few times in the last 10 years that I did use regular, I noticed a rattling on acceleration. For money you won’t to find a car that out performs the Acura TL SHAWD. I intend to hold on to mine forever. My car burns a quart every 3000 miles.
That vtec crossover sounds great ! Especially with that sh awd traction! Fun car ! Just wish that TL was at least 400lbs lighter it would be perfect ! 😩
The motor was $2200CAD With shipping. (Make sure you buy a motor with a warranty and check the cams before you put it in) clutch kit $800, Timing belt kit around $400, Engine Oil, Fluids and other gaskets brought it to just under $4000. If your Camshaft is worn your better off just buying a used cylinder head OR Camshaft/ seals as it's way less work and ALOT cheaper. May also have to replace your rockers/rollers if the cam is worn.
@@Kamshaft thanks, I've never been able to locate a rear cylinder head separately for a J37. No local calgary shops seem able to help. Dealership wants crackpipe money. I did have the front cylinder head internals replaced under lubrico warranty however it didn't cover the rear head. I do find it runs a bit smoother on 5w30 synthetic vs the 5w20 acura spec
@@Kamshaft I believe I was quoted right around 5,000 cad to replace the rear cam and rockers etc from silverhill acura and similar number from a non dealer mechanic. Ideally I'd like to find a used J37 head without a worn cam and just pay labor to have that swapped in. Unfortunately the more I look into it, the more it seems its a design flaw where the rear cam gets starved of oil and the lobes pit . Have also read about improper hardening on the camshafts. But would be willing to experiment if I could swap in a used head for a more reasonable price. Car has 263,000 kms and does burn some oil but otherwise runs like a top. The 6 speed manual and sh awd is such a fun combo which is why I've hung onto it
@@LeoM-zt3pl sounds like dealership prices! The cams do have hardening issues, Mike & I also suspect they also likely fail due to being ran low on oil (most 3.7Ls burn oil) and the rear camshaft is the first to get starved! I’d keep your eye out for a used head on eBay or kiJIJI, then find a shop to swap the head. Most places stay away from engine work as it involves too much risk, or they charge a lot. Another thing to note, run premium in these engines, not running premium will cause excessive carbon buildup on the rings/pistons and cause the oil control rings & cylinder bores to score, thus burning lots of oil.
@@Kamshaft thanks for your advice, much appreciated and yes I've always ran 91 octane in it. However, dont know what prior owner did as I bought it with 200,000 kms. As you know it is hard to find one with a 6 speed manual which is why I took a risk on such a high mileage car.
Used Engine, timing belt/component kit, new clutch, gaskets & fluids are around $5000 without labour, the later model 3.7l is hard to find and more costly, & yes we are in Canada.
@@karreltam161 you either have camshaft/rocker failure or spun a bearing. Camshaft/rocker is cheaper & more of a ticking/rattling than a knocking. If your not mechanically inclined take it to a shop to fix it. This tends to happen as these engines are poorly engineered oil eating machines that get run low and damage the rotating components. If you don’t wanna pull the valve cover to look at the camshaft or pan to check the bearings cut your loses and sell the car.
