@@PhilipOgden-m7z I recall my nearest record store taking delivery of 3000 copies at 8:00 am: By lunchtime they were sold out, it was insane,....truly Graffiti mania.
This was the track The Old Grey Whistle Test put on when the album came out. Like many tracks on TOGWT the visuals were from old black and white films and were of lots of people dancing. I always wanted to see that mash up again and it is now available on UA-cam.
Always worth listening to both, lives are always different, & each song is preformed different at each concert. They add more vocals & guitar to the lives, which also adds to JPJ & Bonham adding on. We won’t be disappointed if you do both, because we love Led Zeppelin, I search for Zeppelin reactions. Thank you once again for your reaction. I personally love the lives more, I love watching their passion filled performances, you can tell how much they love what they do.
It's not very often that a band has control over their music. Most bands in the 1970s were under the thumb of record labels, bad management, or didn't bother reading over the contracts they signed. Jimmy Page paid out of his own pocket for the first album, and produced every Zeppelin album. Their manager Peter Grant protected the band, and took no crap from concert promoter's and all sorts of corrupt people looking to try and scam money from them. Obviously you have seen, and heard how gifted the band was. Well manager Peter Grant was gifted in being their manager. Such a great band
Yes, and along with that came his equal 20% share of everything LZ, thus his nickname, the 5th member. This is a deep funk groove they laid down here, and I think you see this concept throughout their catalogue, where they use something very popular at the time in music and put their spin on it. They never miss and the end result is the incredibly diverse playlist which is unmatched by contemporaries or followers some 55+ years later! Steph, whether it's here on your channel, or by yourself, play the studio version for context! Great reaction!
Peter Grant was a true revolutionary as a manager. The financial security & musical freedom he secured for Led Zeppelin was unheard of at the time and set the template for every manager thereafter. He truly was the "5th" member.
@@3rdOption-l9t Actually that is a myth. The reason Peter Grant was so successful was because he was FAIR. Yes he was tough, but he had to be. He came from within the business, he knew how promoters "operated", how they treated the acts, performers. He knew they regarded even the biggest stars as little more than money making devices and treated them as such. That was NEVER going to happen with Led Zeppelin; Peter Grant loved each member as though they were his flesh&blood. Any record exec, any concert promoter who tried to cheat Led Zeppelin soon realized that was a mistake you could only make once with Peter around.
They played that song differently every time on their 5 night run at Earls Court. This version was by far the fastest. JPJ set the tempo from the start and Bonham and Page went with him. It was Jazz....it was falling down the stairs on their feet. Insane mastery. Great reaction, Steph.
The cool thing for your Led Zeppelin experience Steph is that the studio recordings of these songs are very special sounding recordings…sonically, performance…all of it! You’ll be able to appreciate them on another level in your personal time. 😙👌
Hi Steph. I’m old and was actually there at this show in London in May 1975. Always check out studio then live versions of any Led Zeppelin songs. Take care out there. Best wishes from England 🏴.
Love this song. It’s a great way to get a slow day moving. John Paul Jones, when playing the keyboards, plays the bass line with foot pedals Also read it a while back that this was one of John Bonhams favorite songs to play live. Great reaction as usual
Always start with the studio versions. This is where you find the artists’ INTENTIONS! Once you’ve heard the original product the live version will now have context, to you as a listener. What’s most unique about Zeppelin (and others of course) is that their greatest attributes involved their primacy IN the studio. Jimmy Page was a recording genius, which is what made their work exceptional.
Absolutely! Live versions are often great, having their own dynamic and spectacle, but to skip the balance and perfection of the original is tragic. The studio version is almost always better listening, and having this context makes the live versions better.
Best deal with Zep is to do what we did at the time, listen to the record first then go to the show. You'll appreciate them that much more if you follow that path. Best wishes. P.S. You reacted to "The song remains the same." Do a reaction this way; put on the song remains the same and then let it play straight through into the next song on the record "The Rain Song." You will NOT be disappointed.
Great song, either studio or live, they were masters. You should react to the entire Physical Graffiti double album, the first 3 sides are legendary, the 4th side is a little more mixed but still great Zeppelin on it. Next do the Wanton Song from it and again be Rocked into the ground! Enjoy. 🔥🎵🎸🎤🎸🎹🎶🔥
What a fun reaction, as is always the case with you! You seemed super genuinely "into" the band from about 8:04 for a minute or so, like you forgot you were "reacting." "Lost in the Sauce," as we say here in America, lol! prolly best to start with the studio versions, then you know how the song goes when you see it live. The studio of this sounds quite a bit better/clearer, but it's so fun to see them on stage, too, yah! You should also still do the studio of "In my time of dying." It's mind-blowingly great!
The song's lyrics convey the moving and grinding parts of a car's engine to that of the moving and grinding during sex. Love your reactions as always. Thanks
Near the end, he starts singing the lyrics to Gallows Pole, an acoustic song from their third album. If you get a chance, there are some good soft/acoustic songs on that album, like Gallows Pole, Tangerine, That's the Way and Bron-Y-Aur Stomp.
Led Zepplin live was an experience but to truly appreciate their music listen to the studio versions. Page was a genius producer & sound engineer in his own right. His brilliance in layered sounds counter melodies and textures was more impressive than his guitar abilities in my opinion. The studio compositions are the true gems and displays of the full range of what Led Zepplin really was because live could not duplicate the multitracked subtleties & dynamics of the studio masterpieces.
You’re correct: the powerful charisma, the swagger of Plant ……You don’t see that anymore. It’s straight out male sexuality, and for a good number of people theses days, that is not something to be celebrated. I’m Robert’s age. Back then, we REALLY appreciated that sexual charisma.
Such a great performance. Near the end of the song, the band seamlessly slides into another song, “Gallows Pole”, and then returns to “Trampled Under Foot”.
Not sure if you noticed, but, shortly after the solo, Jimmy breaks a guitar string, being the professional he is, he soldiers on, broken string and all.
I'd recommend you try listening to Pink Floyd. Comfortably Numb is a popular song for reactions, especially the live version at the Pulse concert. The guitar solo is often considered the finest ever.
This has always been, to me, an underrated song. There are other LZ songs like Stairway, Ramble On and Black Dog that, while iconic for good reasons, you hear on the radio way more often than this one. I think this tune deserves more attention, so thank you for giving it some.
In my opinion, you should always listen to the studio version of any song first. It's the version everyone hears first, and the live versions come later. In 98 percent of the cases this is true. And sometimes you should do the studio, then the live version, if the live version is any good. In this case, three tempo is way too fast live.. you don't get a good feel for the song first. That's just my opinion. Unless someone specifically asks for a live version, I would do the studio version first. Great reaction. Thank you. ❤
Steph this is the better version, you could watch the 2007, O2 Arena the sound is exceptional but is a shorter one and then the studio version with a slightly slower tempo and without the fabulous extended guitar, happy birthday to the most beautiful Led head!
I always think specially with Led Zeppelin When you're reacting they're great life because lots of time they improvise on a song what studio is okay it's all up to the individual but I prefer live
tanks to more led zeppelin reaction i hope next kashmir /studio version achiles last stand /studio version ten years gone / studio version the rain song /studio and live version how many more time /studio and live version
Their live versions are NEVER the same way twice and for that reason, I usually recommend that the best FIRST EXPOSURE to Zeppelin should be the studio version. Live "versions" are great but, you REALLY had to be there!
If you are only going to do one, than the answer should always be, listen to the studio version. If you are going to do both, then the answer should be, always listen to the studio version first. This way, you have a truer understanding of the song and not just some live improvisation, as Led Zeppelin would often break off into. It still blows my mind that you haven't listened to two of the greatest studio recordings ever produced with the songs "Stairway to Heaven" and "Since I've Been Loving You", having only listened to the inferior (although cool) live MSG versions. You really should make it a point to revisit both of those songs and listen to the studio versions. The studio versions of both songs will open your eyes to the true power and magic that was Led Zeppelin. Peace
Ten Years Gone IMO is Led Zeppelin's Greatest song or a close second to Kashmir. I prefer studio but up to you Honestly this is the longest version of this song I've ever saw 😎 Twice as long as studio
Always do STUDIO FIRST. Get familiarized with the ORIGINAL arrangement and duration. This way you can better appreciate the variations in live performances, remixes, and re-recordings. For example, it sounds like this song's instrumental break was extended considerably. Had you started with the studio, this live version would have been a better treat, instead of the studio version now being "disappointing" for being "so short" by comparison. ASS : Always Start Studio 😁😆😄
Studio versions first. Can't emphasize this enough. Not that the lives aren't great but just so you can see the dynamic. Hear it how they put it out first then how they performed
I personally prefer the studio version. Obviously you here the instrumentation better, clearer. Not to say the live version isn't exciting as well, especially cause you see the band doing their thing.
