My Trangia 27 was bought for me as an 18th present = I'm 56 this year and still use it! Ive had other stoves, some cheaper and some more expensive, but I keep going back to my Trangia. I do however use it with a gas conversion most of the time now.

My Trangia 27 was purchased in 1987 so it's about 36 years old and still functionally perfect. Not quite as old as yours.

Andy, you can pick up the simmer ring using the pot handle to grip the tab of metal that sticks out of the adjusting disc. But the magnet is a great solution!

I think you should get an opinel knife depending on your hand size I got a #9 and you can get them in carbon steel. Which is nicer than stainless. 😁

great video, I personally use glue to stick the smaller magnet "into" the hole on the pot handle , so it becomes part of the pot handle. Then when I want to pick up/ put down the simmer ring, I just stick the magnetic handle portion into the burning alcohol stove and it will pick up the plate. This way the magnet will not be de-magnetized due to the heat.

Having used a Trangia for over 30 years, I honestly don't know why trangias arent more popular than they are. So compact and work anywhere. I learnt something new today though - the magnet hack is great! I actually enjoyed watching what you put in your trangia more - that cup and folding spatula look great! Ringo

Made a diy Caldera cone out of aluminum flashing. Like the Stormin Norman stove that was made in the UK. A light burner made from the bottom of a drink can, the cone unrolled has ends that slide together. The pot from my 27 fits tightly in the cone. Very light. Saved an early spring trip when the isobutane burner wouldn’t vaporize because of the cold.

Loved the video. Have been a Trangia fan for over 50yrs. For safety and efficiency, can't be beaten. I found a pot that fitted on top of one of my standard pots, drilled some holes in it and made my own steamer which is great for cooking entire meal in one go. Like you, i customisd my set but will never go for anything but the best every time - Trangia.

Top tip: I use dental mouthwash bottles to keep my meths in, both 250ml and 500ml sizes. Advantages are, apart from them being free as you're recycling, the lids lock, they don't leak, and they're flat so don't take up a lot of space.
I use a Trangia burner together inside a small Lixada-type folding twig stove, works a treat, and I have the option to use twigs, or solid fuel tablets as well as the Trangia. My cookware is pretty basic but fine for 1 person, a Dutch army GI type canteen cup with a lid purchased separately, and Dutch army mess tin. All are stainless steel. Also the Swedish foldacup like you have, and a folding cheapo stainless spork similar to the titanium cutlery you showed.

I got a dirt cheap used 27 set with kettle to clean up during lockdown (apparently it's 30+ years old) but it was so old it needed a new burner and after I started using it I've upgraded with a billy pot, a duossal 2.0 small pot and frying pan seasoned for everlasting nonstick and so I can have acidic foods without any issues. A multi fuel burner and a snazzy HA base for the control/hose hole would be nice too

I have the Trangia 25 set and all the pieces are made in the ultralight hard anodized including the pot stand and wind base but not the kettle. It did not come that way but I added it so it all matched. I also added the the gas burner and pan stand for the smaller cook pots. I use the Keith Titanium folding utensils and I love this set up. It easily cooks for 3-4 people. 👍🏻

I bought a Trangia 27K about 30 years ago, doesn't have a hole for the gas adapter, the windshield simply rests on the base and non-stick wasn't an option, apart from that it's identical. I added the strainer lid and a non-stick pan and like you eventually gave in and bought the Trangia fuel bottle, expensive but probably worth it. The long reach lighter is a help but I tend to use the twig trick and a regular lighter. The only thing I addded was a alufoil bubble wrap pot cozy, keeps things warm while you're cooking something else. They've fallen out of favour a bit and I switched to an MSR Whisperlite soon after getting the Trangia but they do work, they're very stable and can be left to do their own thing while you attend to other tasks so speed isn't really an issue. There's nothing to break and they're a nice combined unit if a bit bulky but ideal for canoe camping.
I personally don't mind sporks but hate the feel/taste of titanium and dislike folding cutlery, I prefer stainless steel regular cutlery. I like your idea of keeping the cup in the kettle although I use the larger folding cup so I'll have to see if it fits. I like your plate but personally if I carried the plate I wouldn't take the strainer but that's an individual thing. I used to use Opinel but prefer my Spyderco as it slices equally well and I'm carrying it anyway, of course if you're buying a knife specifically for food prep the Opinel is excellent value and has a trad appearance. Surprisingly I find that my recently purchased Gerber Strongarm slices extremely well, (sub 5mm slices off a raw potato) which for a thick bladed knife was unexpected, could be due to having a sabre grind.

That magnet is a great idea, I'll be stealing that for the Scouts! I usually smear the bottom of everything in fairy liquid which helps get the soot off a lot easier. I've went for the petrol multi fuel setup, which was expensive, but a really good setup I find. You can always find a petrol station. Great video, keep them coming. cheers

I have always wanted a proper Trangia kit but only have something that I made up 30 odd years ago that is similar but not quite as good as the real thing. I couldn't afford the real thing, now I could afford it but am used to the setup I made now. I love that you like to use real cutlery, I often watch people with horrible plastic ones or sporks etc. that look so, so awkward to use. I have always used real cutlery it doesn't take up that much space.

I had one in a shopping basket for ages until I saw your review. Really came in handy over last year and gave my partner and I an excuse to search out a bit of green in London.
I upgraded to a non-stick pan after a scrambled omelette and got another set of pot grippers with some rubber stoppers but in hind sight the original grippers are fine. I was just worried they'd crimp the pots!

Thanks for this fantastic overview. Your videos helped me decide to get one of these kits. A few things I've found that work for me:
I've seasoned the pan and pots, so there's zero sticking now.
I was looking around for one of those sugar cube tongs but realized a simple set of disposable chop sticks work great as well.
The MSR folding spatula fits inside the kit with the pot grabber.
I've found nesting the towel between the bowls and wind screen reduces rattling a little better, and the extra towel material keeps the kettle snug without needing the rubber band.
Looking forward to more great content!

Great video Andy. I got back into Trangia during lockdown 1 and dug out my 24 year old no.25. I now have a Duossal 27 and a 28. Also three different kettles. Stay away from the Trangia Stove Facebook page. A great bunch of people but it ends up costing more money 😁
As an aside, I wonder if you could do more cooking vlogs with the Trangia? Your love of cooking, great recipes and a Trangia would make for good watching.

The MSR large stowaway pot sits on top like the fry pan perfect if you want a stew pot.
Also the 27 kettle nests inside a MSR stowaway pot 775 ml and great with the trangia triangle if you want a walking set up, atb Chiefy

The magnet hack for positioning the simmer cover over the burner is great. You and Simon, for example, each have the experience and the know-how to select and package equipment for each type of adventure. YOU MAKE A FINE POINT about your flatware choices, which I would generalize to apply throughout the kit selection. I never made the lightest weight my guiding principle. There is a happy balance between taking what one likes to use and what one needs, tempered by how much one can carry.

I’m afraid Ive not got any life-changing revolutionary improvisations to share. I love that magnet idea though. I’ve got right into using the trangia mini thanks to one of your vids Andy and my daughter ended up getting me one for crimbo. I’ve been using a large foldacup for soups and the diddy one for hot drinks.
I’ve been using the trangia mini on day hikes and even tried it with swapping out the brass burner for one of those cheap generic titanium versions to save weight (prefer the brass if I’m honest). I’ve a trangia 25 - the big one that I want to take out to do a big lunch, but still not got round to it.

Thought now occurs to me about the kettle - boiling water for drinking if it’s doubtful.

Tip for washing. Silicone spatula is good for that. Your little bottle is evil. If you leave it in gears, detergent smell leaking out of it.

Would love to know where that Pot lid/strainer/chopping board came from!!
Very similar kit here - ALOCS (80€ anodized). Alcohol and gas stoves came with, plus the windshield has been used as a wood stove. Pan and lid on top of one of the pots serves to bake flatbread. I have made two thing at once in each pot (rice + chilli/curry) by using the gas stove which has a pot stand.
I copied a lot of the SOTO navigator cookset - Pot cozy DIY, pot gripper (5€) doubles as tongs, pack everything inside a microfiber cloth/bag.
Decathlon kit(12€) ladle, spatula and silicone cutting board.
I eat with chopsticks and use them to stir my food with them.
A round grill (10€) with leg for steaming food inside the pots, or grilling on coals. If I grill on the open flame I'll use a piece of metal mesh for heat dispersion.
Opinel as well, nice chunky Nº12.
Weighs a bit more than 1kg, and works perfect for long term bicycle touring. (though for woodlands, a Zebra billy and a Picogrill 498 does literally everything needed)

"Good God man! All that weight! You'll never get that load out of your car much less the parking lot!" (That's blatant sarcasm for all the light weight backpackers that cut their shoe laces in half and tear the tags out of their underwear to cut down on weight.) I think you have a great setup and I think it would be more fun to try out in use rather than try to get by with something minimal just because of weight. Thanks for your video.

Hi Andy! Sorry I’m a bit late! Have had my 27 a couple of months now so haven’t really had time to put it through it’s paces yet. I’m thinking of ditching the kettle as it wastes fuel ( although I love seeing it boiling away on the pot stand😂👍) I boiled approximately 300ml of water in the kettle which took a little over 7 minutes then boiled the same amount in one of the pots covered with fry pan which only took a few seconds over 3 minutes! Whereas there are a multitude of ways to fire one of these up, following Trangias own guide makes life so much easier! Set up the lower windshield, put in burner and light then place pot stand on top! No more scorched hands😂 to extinguish the burner take off pot stand use simmer ring to put it out replace pot stand, in my experience the pot stand doesn’t get to hot to remove. Hope that helps. Now just waiting for my non-stick frying pan later today 🤞😂 As always thanks for all your hard work bringing us these videos, much appreciated. Kind regards from deepest Dorset 👍

If the pot stand does got too hot, you can use the pot gripper to lift it off; it has the same sized rolled edge as the pans. If you're careful, you can actually pick up the entire cooker this way, in case you have to move it when it's still hot.
