Here's something to consider. The Trangia burner can create a "hot spot" especially when using the fry pan. It seems the burner is either "on high" or "off." The simmer ring has been problematic in addressing this problem. Looking at other videos and comments tells me that other Trangia owners have experienced similar problems. To address this, I bought the Evernew Alcohol Stove Cross Stand for about $10. Set up the Trangia upper and lower wind screens as usual, then place the cross stand on the Trangia burner. On the cross stand, I placed a round piece of sheet metal that is 4 3/4 inches in diameter as a heat diffuser. I also drilled six 1/8th inch holes in the diffuser in a circular pattern to allow some heat to pass through. The specific diameter will also allow the diffuser to rest directly on the lower level of the pot holders on the upper windscreen so you can use the Trangia pot stand on the upper level, which allows the use of non Trangia pots. This diffuser eliminated the problem of hot spots and spreads the heat out evenly. The only complication comes from extinguishing the flame because access to the burner is blocked. My solution was to pack small 6-inch metal salad tongs to reach in to grab the diffuser and the cross pieces before extinguishing the stove with the simmer ring. After doing all the above, I bought the gas adapter from Firebox, which fits perfectly in the Trangia for half the price. Since it comes with its own flame diffuser and gas regulator, it's perfect for simmering.
Excellent set up and nicely explained! I also added the Trangia 725-24 ftypan, fits under the outside of the billy and can use the billy lid on the pan, which is surprisingly handy. You may have just tipped me over the edge on getting the winter burner attachment!!
I use the GSI anodised aluminium kettle almost identical dimensions and it goes nicely with the hard anodised wind shield. I have the hard anodised pots but use the Duassol frying pan. One accessory I would recommend is the pot lid, nice to be able to keep things warmer for longer and keep insects out of one’s cooking (although there aren’t many this year) probably saves a bit of fuel as well. The Billy pot is great for spaghetti/linguine where the regular pots are too small. Pot stand very useful if using anything other than Trangia pots, I mainly use for it when I want to make Turkish/Greek coffee in my cezve/Briki.
Very good video and really liked the thorough explanations. I also use Trangia stoves quite a bit because of the silence but I changed over to Grain alcohol for the fuel because I did not like the idea of possibly leaking a poisonous liquid in my pack. Here in the U.S., Grain alcohol of the 190-proof variety is fairly easy to get and not to bad on cost. Oh, BIG point for anyone going to change fuels. You MUST get a new stove because your old/used one is already contaminated with the poisons if you have been using Heat/meths as fuel.
@@cloyd2381thanks that's useful info. I use bioethanol as I think it burns cleaner and doesn't smell as bad. I sometimes just use the gas attachment if I need some real control of the flame.
Great set up for vehicles and canoe camping. Live trangias. Used them for 44 years wouldn’t change. Mines the 27 series plus triangle and billy. Use my triangle nearly everyday on day hikes to make a brew n a bacon butty. 👍
You're right about them being good. Also a little addictive. This is definitely as you describe and not for backpacking and sees regular use during the camping season.
Great set up. I have a similar set up but I have the military 4.5 pot which the lid is also a large frying pan.using the gsi kettle is a great add. I think I will change mine to that as well.
I've not seen a trangia set quite like this.....very nice. Personally, I'd only use the liquid/meth burners if gas were not available, as butane/propane would, to me, be faster and more efficient. But to each their own. You covered everything very nicely, thank you. It's quite a system.
I'd be curious if any of the pots can act as a windshield for the triangle e.g if the billy pot wasn't being used if the Triangle within it would work. I can see reasons it would be a bad idea, you're having to reach right above so more chance of burning yourself and it risks snuffing the flame. I've just ordered in Black Friday sale the Trangia Triangle. I've got a smaller Titanium triangle but it doesn't allow the simmer ring on in half-open so it's only really a boiling setup. The Trangia Triangle is obviously bigger to give that half-open simmer option.
Thanks for the comment, it's really appreciated. I never thought of that as a concept. I'll have you do some experiments as that's seems worth investigating, thanks.
I have the 27 series in Duossal with the billy pot in UL aluminium. I have the gas burner for use during fire bans. Recently added 2 Snow Peak Titanium plates that nest upside down on the frypan. Fit the strap when not taking the billy pot, remove the strap to nest in the billy pot. The billy pot adds capacity when needed. Thank you for sharing 👍
Good set up very similar to my own, but I use the nonstick fry pan, I also have an additional wind shield for use when frying on top which greatly improves the the heat when it's windy and also to use with the triangle.
