Just to point out, when I was younger, I was taken away with the visuals and story telling but as adult, I finally paid attention to the plot and is really good. It was only as an adult that I finally realized that the Penguin was found and raised in a Circus where he was known as aquatic boy, and that he started making crimes against children while in the circus and the circus performers are now a criminal gang under the Penguin's command. The studio wanted Tim Burton to change his vision, but he decided to quit cause if he couldn’t make it the way he wanted to make it, then he decided to not do it
That's not what happened. For Batman Returns, Tim wasn't all that interested in coming back but WB desperately wanted him back due to the first film's success. They managed to get him onboard by giving him full creative control. The movie then released and there was a parental backlash due to the sexual references and perceived, increased darkness. The Happy Meal toys-tie in was cancelled by McDonald's as a result. Tim was actually interested in doing a third one. He went into the studio and put forth some ideas he had. Then, surrounded by WB executives, one said around half an hour into the meeting, "Tim... don't you want to do a smaller movie, now?". Tim responded with, "You don't want me to come back, do you?". They then said, "No! No! No! No!". But Tim said he can take a hint, and that's where negotiations ended. It's at 28:06 in this documentary - ua-cam.com/video/JKMSKvJncf4/v-deo.html&ab_channel=WarnerBros.Entertainment
@@ajscarecraft5560 But I think the main thing that comes through in that conversation is that they just wanted Tim to not direct anymore, period, and when it gets down to it, they weren't going to allow it, one way or another, regardless of what he decided.

My favorite Batman movie. I walked two miles as a 10 year old on Saturday June 20th 1992. Unfortunately I walked in when the Penguin says “gotta fly!” It was a double feature with Lethal Weapon 3, so we stayed through and got to watch it in its entirety again. Core Memory right there.
Batman returns had a lot of dark humor and dirty jokes that I never noticed until I started rewatching it recently guess I was too busy enjoying the film. 😂
I feel like Tim Burton’s universe should get a chance to continue…even though he’s going to be in The Flash, there should be an animated film or two to conclude Michael Keaton’s Batman arc
@@captainbeastwinger4940 His arc of becoming an actual hero than a psycho defined by revenge. If you re-watch the films, Batman doesn’t kill until he realizes that Joker killed his parents. Then, he can’t stop; he’s sort of in that place he warned Jason Todd of in Under The Red Hood. You could make the assumption that Michael Keaton’s Batman isn’t affected by the people he kills, but it’s because he believes it’s too late for him. That’s why the finale of BR is him trying to keep Selina from becoming what he is. The original script of Batman Forever touched on Batman moving on from the death he’s caused. The scene where he talks to Robin about revenge in the BatCave? That’s from his own experience. But, then he kills Two-Face, which is one of the reasons Batman Forever doesn’t work that well. But the original idea was a great sequel to Burton’s films that continued his arc. Keaton’s Batman should get a chance to finish that arc.
Well actually he killed 5 people in the film before he killed joker but their deaths were all post Bruce finding out joker killed his parents so he was probably full of vengeance right then and there and ready to kill anybody to get to joker.
In the Batman vs TMNT movie, The Penguin has these same type of umbrellas. This movie scared me in parts when I was a kid which made the movie that much better
This one is a childhood favorite of mines. This version of Batman as well as the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies were my introduction to superhero movies.
I will always love this Burton sequel. This feels like the epitome of Burton, just so grimy & gritty. The cast is amazing too, from Pfeiffer, to Walken, to DeVito. Just awesome!
Burgess Meredith was reached out to about playing Penguins father, which eventually went to Paul Rubens, in the beginning but his health was declining at the time. That would have been incredible
Batman returns is surprisingly my favorite Batman movie from the OG films however it’s a little dark for kids I remember watching it as kid and I was like dang blood, suicide, sex, drugs
Interview kid: It was very violent, & it was an attack against kids. Me: huh. Also I can see a kid saying it was violent, but the part of “attack against kids” had to have been a line fed to him.
You probably know this since you showed a screen shot of it in the last review, but DC has continued the Keatonverse in comic form and have introduced the Marlon version of Robin recently. Great video as always man 👍
So... I saw this film for first time as a child (in my country at that time, btw, there wasn’t so much drama about kids watching such dark-themed films, and the crime rate in my country is damn low...basically non-existent...in other words, we as adults turned out to be just fine and normal) and I’ve always imagined that the scene where penguin's (Oswald's) parents throw him into that stream portrays Gotham for what it really is, and how different Gotham is from real cities. Like, the crime rate in Gotham is high (we know that from 1989 film), mob bosses run the city from shadows, and crazy people are all around Gotham, living among normal people. And here we get Max Shreck, a billionaire who probably kinda owns the half of police and has people in the justice system, and he knows that, and that's why he is so confident in killing Selena Kyle. He knows that he won't be charged or arrested for killing anyone, especially someone as unimportant as Selena. That scene where she falls down and hits the ground...I personally saw that as if she has remarkable luck because that thing she hits first kinda softens her final hit on the ground. The part about cats I saw as a (subtle?) hint for us regarding how cats in Gotham go hungry and they will simply eat anything that falls in front of them. But as she wakes up and goes away, those cats follow her. It's Gotham. Then, finally...we get our (my favourite) batman. Again, it's Gotham, and a normal healthy person would certainly not go out during the night dressed as a bat and fight crime. He was traumatized as a kid, and was left with Alfred, his butler. And since Bruce was his boss, Alfred probably did whatever Bruce wanted. It’s likely that Alfred wasn't entirely sane when he went along with whatever Bruce wanted. I think Bruce fighting crime dressed as something had probably been in Bruce's head since the night his parents were murdered. Also, for Gotham in my opinion, having Batman killing the bad guys almost all the time is totally normal. Plus, probably, police don’t care at that point anyway, because they are sick of all that crime in the city and all the scum on the streets. And this being Gotham, the inhabitants are kinda ruined by the environment they live in. I'm sure that on the TV channels there’d be people debating whether batman should be arrested and imprisoned or be given a death sentence for all the killing he did...then on the other side there would be people on batman's side saying that there's finally someone brave enough and crazy enough to do a job of the police, since police is obviously not doing it well cos of all the corruption and all. I’d say more about Burton's two Batman films, but this wall of text has become too large already, but what I can say is, even with all its flaws (just like every story made by humans)...I consider this version of batman as the best of the best, the one and only, the original, while all the other films made after these two are simply not that good (in my opinion...it's just how I see it, and you guys may or may not agree with me...we all have our favourites and our thoughts on each batman film). I apologize for my messy writting...was typinging it on my phone. Oh, and...can't wait to see Keaton in the cinemas as batman again. XD
All I've ever wanted again in a batman film is a Gotham like tim burtons. His takes you away from the real world and you get submerged literally into a live comic book. Hope Gotham at least looks somewhat similar in The Batman, or has a different architecture from the Nolan films. Funny how back then they complained about the darkness of this movie yet now that's what they need lol.
Devito's character was nor raised by penguins, the movie mentions at some point that he was shown as a freak in a circus as a kid, the penguins most likely just taking out of the water and they were part of the cirus itself. That's why all the Penguins goons are circus-related like clowns and malabarists.
I wouldn't say this is the one WB regrets making, that'll go to either Batman and Robin or Batman Forever most likely Batman & Robin. But that I remember watching of this film I liked it, it's uncomfortable at times but that was Tim Burton's style with Batman
Yeah Defiantly I don’t think wb regrets “Batman forever”because that movie at the time did really well for them and outgross returns(I think it was the top grossing movie in 1995)
Batman Returns and The Dark Knight are still my 2 favorite Batman films of all time. The 89 was alright but I loved Returns way more, watched it hundreds of times and it never gets old. Didnt know some people disliked it, thats news to me
I know I'm days late, but even as a younger fan of comic book movies (I'm 16) this film has always stuck with me. I remember just watching this on loop with Batman '89 when I was younger. I always dreamed of it snowing here in San Antonio, Texas like it did in Gotham. It is criminally underated with the likes of Captain America The First Avenger, Man of Steel, Superman II and it's predecessor Batman '89 in my opinion.
@@3CFilms Batman Returns wasn’t a Batman movie, it was a Tim Burton movie. It was literally a repeat of Edward Scissorhands with the Penguin. It was about the Penguin, not Batman. Batman Forever was better actually. It actually focused on Bruce Wayne, unlike Batman Returns did
I have an interesting story with this movie. My mom was 10 when this movie came out. My grandmother(Who hates everything that's dark, or horror related) took my mom and her three sisters to go see this movie in the theater. They walked out 5 minutes later. I never understood why until I saw this movie for the first time. Yeah understand why Ronald McDonald pulled out on that deal with WB. Sheesh
Honestly, this movie is a masterpiece and was definitely the best Batman movie before Nolan came along. (Personally, I still hold this over TDKR, making it my 3rd favorite live action solo Batman film).
This is one of my favorite Superhero movies. It truly is such a dark fairytale and has some amazingly beautiful moments. I find this film extremely underrated when ranking Batman movies and personally its my favorite Batman movie.
I know the penguins discovered him(the penguin)as a baby but Batman does do some rare detective work in this movie and we do find out he grew up and was raise in the circus(the red triangle gang) who were connected to missing children cases
I like you reference the character Shrek from the Shrek movies. But there was an actor named Max Shreck and he’s best known for playing the first ever onscreen Vampire in Nosferatu
Even though this film isn't as well written as the first one and is way more over the top, I still really like it. Everything else about it is great. The cast, the villains, thr fight scenes, the music, the visuals, and some of the cool memorable scenes make it all a good movie.
bro even after 30 years people still don't understand this penguins origin, he was not raised by the bloody penguins in the sewer, the circus took him in after they found the baby in the abandoned zoo where they kept their penguins for their shows, the movie just didn't explain this much, but the news article about the "water bird boy" states it clearly.
Saw it as a 12-Year-old-Kid in the Cinema and it defined me forever as a big Batman-Nerd - still my Fav-Batman-Movie. Michelle Pfeiffer's Performance is for Ages.
Something that I always say to people is that if your a fan of Marvel you can't be a fan of DC, and I live by that too this day. But with Batman, I have always made an exception.
Absolutely love both Burton films, upon rewatching all the Batman films before The Batman, I found this one to be the best of the 1989-late 90’s run. This film was everything I love about Tim Burton turned up to eleven, on steroids. “Teach her my French Flipper Trick.” - The Penguin. I believe that’s all I need to say.
Even though it's not very comic accurate I still enjoyed the world Tim Burton created. In fact it was actually my favorite Batman film growing up. Seeing this in comparison to "The Batman" reminds me just how far we've come. Also, as a side note I loved the fact Paul Reubens reprised his role as Penguin's father in Gotham. (albeit in a separate universe)
Love this movie. That little kid on that talk show was a little wimp. This movie isn't for wimps. Great art is risky and bold. Batman Returns is great art.
I love this film. Its one of my favourite Tim burton films. Michelle Pfeifer and Danny devito lit up the screen and stole the show. It's dark, creepy and amazing.
The first Batman movie was good, yes. It was the best Batman movie. But Batman Returns? No. It wasn’t even about Batman, it was about the Penguin. It was literally a repeat of Edward Scissorhands with the Penguin.
… Batman Forever was better than Batman Returns. I know that’s a very unpopular opinion, but that’s what I think. Batman Forever was a nice refreshing change
This is my favorite Batman movie. I think it sucks that marketing was the issue at the center of its mixed reaction from people. Marketing to kids, marketing toys/happy meals, (etc.) I don't think any of that should matter. All that SHOULD matter is the film itself, and I LOVE it.
I imagine what tim burton would’ve done with the other villains… Two face was deformed when he was born so he has two faces The riddler holds up a riddle card or something Scarecrow was raised by humanoid scarecrows Robin has to act like a robin
The toys, the cups, the Happy Meals, they all still came out. McDonald's pulled the TV ads and that was it. That didnt stop anything. I ran this movie at the drive in as the projectionist back then and it's awesome!
I really hate WB for denying Burton to go on after this one. They just couldn't understand the perfection of this movie. They only wanted to sell merchandise. People just can't handle the Burton-Style.

Yes that’s what I was referring to, he left because they wanted him to change his vision, he left the movie
@@ajscarecraft5560 But I think the main thing that comes through in that conversation is that they just wanted Tim to not direct anymore, period, and when it gets down to it, they weren't going to allow it, one way or another, regardless of what he decided.
He could have changed the vision to be more like the animated series. That could have worked.
How would they regret this it’s an amazing movie

Couldn't sale as many toys because of the dark tones and controversies. movie is amazing I agree!
@@3CFilms If you’re making a movie, and your main concern is how much money you can make off toys, instead of the quality of the film, I don’t feel sorry for you Warner Bros. Here’s a question, would Batman Returns be rated R today?

This movie is an underrated gem!
Nothing to regret. Batman Returns is excellent!
No it wasn’t… I mean, not if you wanna see an actual Batman. If you wanna see a Tim Burton movie, yes it was excellent. It wasn’t a Batman movie
@@nsasupporter7557 As a Batman, and Tim Burton fan. I absolutely loved it.

Ok, bud! Good for you! But I didn’t love it ok! SORRY 🤷♂️
So I’m sure you loved that it wasn’t a Batman movie, and it was a rehash of Edward Scissorhands
How could anyone hate Batman Returns? It's amazing Danny Davito is legendary as Penguin, Michelle Pfeiffers Catwoman was definitely one of my biggest celebrity crushes as a kid, then you have Christopher Walken along with pure Tim Burton chaos, everything about it is great it's one of the best Batman movies in my opinion it's just so much fun.
Agreed it is great
Pfeiffer: "You nake it so easy, don't you? Always waiting for some Batman to save you. I am Catwoman. Hear me roar."
Penguin: “you’re just jealous cause I’m a genuine freak and you have to wear a mask!”
Nice you were committed I miss my childhood days time flies
Batman: *Sleeps like a bat*
Joker: *Puts the Joker on display*
Penguin: *Raised by Pinguins*
Catwoman: *Resurrected by Cats*
Tim Burton is just in his weird Tim Burton self.
Different to the comics
Batman returns had a lot of dark humor and dirty jokes that I never noticed until I started rewatching it recently guess I was too busy enjoying the film. 😂
Just the 🐱 I was looking for !
@@3CFilms that never get's old ! I hope collin farrell's penguin has that fucked up sense of humor during the batman
Same I didn't realize it as well.
Catwoman literally attempts to give Batman a handjob on the roof…soooo a little more than innuendos in this film
I feel like Tim Burton’s universe should get a chance to continue…even though he’s going to be in The Flash, there should be an animated film or two to conclude Michael Keaton’s Batman arc
We're getting a continuation with the Batman 89 comic.
@@wisconsinking323 that's a comic that's poorly written and can be easily ignored in the film canon
What arc?
I remember having “interesting “ dreams about cat woman when I was really little.
In the Batman vs TMNT movie, The Penguin has these same type of umbrellas. This movie scared me in parts when I was a kid which made the movie that much better
Pee-wee Herman also played Oswald's father on Gotham
This one is a childhood favorite of mines. This version of Batman as well as the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies were my introduction to superhero movies.
DeVito’s Penguin is exactly what the characters thought Depp’s Edward Scissorhands was. The monster in the house on the hill
Don't sell yourself short that christopher Walken impersonation had me laughing!
I will always love this Burton sequel. This feels like the epitome of Burton, just so grimy & gritty. The cast is amazing too, from Pfeiffer, to Walken, to DeVito. Just awesome!
I like how in japan they had demon slayer happy meals and mc donalds still sold them
😂😂😂
6:44 Penguin probably learned most of what he knew from working at the Red Triangle Circus.
This was my dads favorite movie when he was a kid and when he showed it to me, I loved it.
Great dad!!
It is hinted that the Penguin for half his life lived in a circus which explained how he got the crew and infers that’s how he learned English
Good point!
Batman returns is the EPITOME of what a Batman movie should feel like! Dark, Cold, Melancholic, Mysterious, and ultimately Heroic!
Out of the first four Batman films this is my personal favourite, although I still don’t like Batman killing people.
😂😂😂
Batman movie? It wasn’t even about Batman! It was a Tim Burton movie, it was literally a repeat of Edward Scissorhands with the Penguin
Dude these old Batman movies were IT. Like dark knight and BVS brings different things but these old school ones are something else
XD
I watched this this past Christmas. Pretty interesting because I didn't remember a lot from this movie, even though I had seen it so many times.
Yeah Defiantly I don’t think wb regrets “Batman forever”because that movie at the time did really well for them and outgross returns(I think it was the top grossing movie in 1995)
What he means by regretting is theme loosing there marketing for toys due to all the dark tones in the movie
Batman Returns and The Dark Knight are still my 2 favorite Batman films of all time. The 89 was alright but I loved Returns way more, watched it hundreds of times and it never gets old. Didnt know some people disliked it, thats news to me
This was my favourite as a kid still love the movie to this day
As a kid I barely even remember this movie but now watching it I’m like dang this is dark
I don’t care if you judge me or not but this is one of if not my favorite Batman movies of all time!!!
Oh I love this movie too, WB's regret is just loss in money from film being too adult to sale toys

Sheesh
Far and away the best of the pre-Nolan Batman movies. And kudos to the dude who is behind 3C Films.
This is a movie I watch every December. I love this movie and wish WB would’ve let Burton complete his trilogy.
When I was a kid, my favorite aspect about this film was The Penguin. Today, I would say it's the fascinating relationship between Bruce and Selina.
My childhood favorite :)
Had all the McDonald's toys and the big Batmobile
bro even after 30 years people still don't understand this penguins origin, he was not raised by the bloody penguins in the sewer, the circus took him in after they found the baby in the abandoned zoo where they kept their penguins for their shows, the movie just didn't explain this much, but the news article about the "water bird boy" states it clearly.
Saw it as a 12-Year-old-Kid in the Cinema and it defined me forever as a big Batman-Nerd - still my Fav-Batman-Movie. Michelle Pfeiffer's Performance is for Ages.
Dane davito deserves a Oscar for his penguin potrayel
Something that I always say to people is that if your a fan of Marvel you can't be a fan of DC, and I live by that too this day. But with Batman, I have always made an exception.
You could definitely be a fan of both there is nothing wrong with it
You can be a fan of both wtf
"It was a total attack against kids"... I WAS A KID WHEN THIS CAME OUT AND I WILL NEVER GET OVER HOW MUCH I STILL DEEPLY LOVE IT.
Honestly, if the parents who were shocked at this movie saw The Dark Knight, and Snyder’s work, they’d go into a coma lol
If Tim Burton does a Scarecrow origin movie. It should be called 50 wisp of hay.
The movie is so dark that I had to turn on my phone flashlight.
Lame ass kid I’m glad I grew up differently this movie was real hood I miss those 90s Batman movies
The bloke making these videos is very astute. Brilliant. Cheers!
These reviews are getting me real excited for The Batman
Of the original Batman lineup I always found Batman Returns as the best of the 4 for the style even if Tim Burton did his own thing
I love this film. Its one of my favourite Tim burton films. Michelle Pfeifer and Danny devito lit up the screen and stole the show. It's dark, creepy and amazing.
In the flash movie we can officially say that Batman returns since the og Batman is returning Michael Keaton

I imagine what tim burton would’ve done with the other villains…

Yeah, I still have the toys and cups from my childhood. Not sure why people think they were never produced.
This was the very first Batman film I saw as a kid, I remember my dad putting it on the vhs and him loving the Penguin and Catwoman.
I really hate WB for denying Burton to go on after this one. They just couldn't understand the perfection of this movie. They only wanted to sell merchandise.
