Awesome car! I love the way it looks... Very futuristic and aggressive, like a hot hatch should be. Most other so-called "hot" hatches are so boring to look at. A hot hatch should not look understated or like something an old lady would approve of. Honda got the styling of the Civic Type R just right.

As ever, a very good and honest review. The first Honda I have bought or been tempted by since the Integra R I bought in 1997. Highly focused and superbly engineered. Built for drivers and probably too focused to be a true every day car, but fantastic fun to drive . It takes concentration and commitment to get the very best out of it and you really need to be in that mind frame. Shame the fun stops at 7000 rpm. Looks more discreet in black than white.
if only l where 20 years younger lol l did own a fn2 GT back in 2008,it lacked straight line speed,but what fun it was on a British B Road/country roads this new version should rectify the lack of straight line speed. Hi Thomas, watched the video this morning and fab review again. I drove one of these 3 months ago at our local Honda dealer as bought a Civic and CRV from there. I am a VW and Audi man but was blown away with the performance and grip of the car. I am a big fan of 4wd cars but if I did want a change it's in the top 3 of the cars I would go for.
I own same car model now 4th year ownership. So much fun! At it is no expensive car. It was 37k eur brand new. GT spec. This is not a lot of money for a brilliant thrilling car. So fast and exciting. And looks awesome once lowered and on 20s rims. And in black.

Nice review again Thomas. Some details I like, for example the bucket seats are really nice. The build quality in general and infotainment is behind his competitors, like the Focus RS or Peugeot 308 GTI. So I would rather go for them. Oh I loved it when you said: 'Lets make a U turn and do that again'! My favourite one is the A45 AMG, I do love that car. Super Fahrbericht! Great review! Weiter so! Go on like that! The only thing I missed was a statement to how the Type R compares to the other hot hatches you have tested before. The AMG 45 for example is in germany nearly double the price at the same equipment level as the Type R GT. And the Type R has already won comparison-tests against the Focus RS in terms of driving fun and lap times (although by a margin).

Really enjoyed your review. Your English is excellent and very clear. The Type R is not for me sadly - the styling is a little over the top for me and the ride seems too extreme/harsh for the roads I have to use daily, but it certainly looks like fun for tracks/smooth roads.

Best hatch so far!The sport version(not tR) in UK,with deals only £13800 which is awesome!The new model is coming out in two month,should arrive by end of July,early August which will replace the look above in the video,spied price mention around low as £14500(used with 8000 miles around £10k) to high as £23000!Still the 2016 line looks awesome!For a new Civic with the famous reliability on a budget of £14k is unbelievable.Just to say Skoda rapid,seat leon,vw golf,ford focus all cost more around £4k(a new kitchen?,a nice Holiday in Bahamas?wedding?,a mens cave? :)))

Hi Thomas, many thanks for the review. I own the "civilized" version of this car (1.8L i-vtec). Regarding the cockpit that you find irritating, it is indeed very practial for me because it is designed around you. Speedometer location acts as a head up display and all the controls are logically placed. Much more than VW. I own a Golf 6 before the Civic, and the dashboard was well screwed but boring interior and poor mechanical reliability : well known DSG & TSI issue...). Sometimes minimalism is nicer but not more logical. The Honda Connect system has different themes. The one shown in this video is the basic/factory one, but you can select a more modern version because it is an Android tablet. It is not the best system (like BMW idrive which a reference) but it improves "the experience" quite a bit. And finally I agree in the polarising/hysterical design, but to me, even if I don't find this car nice to look at, this is a good thing because too many car makers are doing boring stuffs (Audi, VW, Seat, Skoda, and now even peugeot with the 308).
All brands must take lessons from Honda, what a hot hatch should look like. Every part shows its difference from the civic and every car maker should make their own car in that way.
Racing suspension is not good for regular roads. Thomas looks like he's being shaken, but no stirred. Wonder why an adaptable suspension isn't available.
he explained 100times that the +R Button is stiften up the suspension. I own the car and in the "normal" mode the car is soft...so you got an adjustable suspension.
...it does have an adjustable suspension. Normal mode, the car is perfect on good road surfaces and better than you'd expect a hot hatch to be on slightly bumpier roads. +R mode stiffens the suspension considerably. Again though, it's fine on well maintained flat roads.
In 1989, the Lancia Delta Integrale Turbo also had a 2 liter 4 cylinder engine and went to 60 in 5.7 seconds, top speed of 222 kph. . That was 27 years ago. I understand the top speed of this car is 270 kph on a level road and 290 on a slight decline, which is out of this world amazing for a 2 liter, but the 0 to 60? 5.7 is simply acceptable.
This is true of a standard front wheel drive car, but listen to this... Put a spring loaded cassette onto a rear wheel. Whenever you brake, the spring would get wound up like a toy car being "loaded" by pulling it backwards. That tiny spring in that toy car gives it a scale acceleration of around 1/2 second to 60 and a scale top speed of abut 200 mph in 1 second. This would give the car potentially 50 hp from a dead stop to when you touch the pedal. It's free as well...
I really like the design for what it is. With its wide wheel arches, huge spoiler and near-flat underbody. It's no Audi or Mercedes elegance. It's just pure japanese touge. Overdone but fits in its style. Would i buy it over a (same priced) Mercedes A-Class? Probably. I have the money? No. But thanks to Autogefühl i can feel closer to it.
There is great choice now for hot hatches right now, between this,the VW Golf GTi, Peugeot 308GTi, Ford Focus RS, Seat Leon Cupra, & I'm sure Renault Sport will tune the new Megane, so if You can afford it, there's lot's to chose, I'd have the Pug!

This could be the quickest Civic Type-R but also the ugliest and most ungainly looking even with that huge racy rear wing. Interior is really nice and very well put together for driver focus and the engine sounds really good when being revved hard. Ford Focus RS would be the better pick though. BMW M2 best pick ( but then M2 is on another league altogether ). Another very enjoyable review there Thomas!
This car is not ugly at all,may look a bit plasticky but non of the other car makers will beat the Honda in reliability.I have seen the renders of the next gen Civic hatch and that is gorgeous.If you want this civic but with a nice price you should just wait till the end of summer and you will grab a bargain nice built hatch(UK).I like the new Renault Megan's GT but it is FRENCH!!!!!
This is very interesting car. Looks very much in your face. I would remove the wing, it is too much, but the interior looks alright. My choice would be the 308 GTI. It appeals to me in some level. It is styled like the hot hatches of 10 years ago. Which I mean that you only get hints of what is under the bonnet, rather than this "look at me people, I (do not) HAVE a midlife-crisis!" Your quality is exceptional!
Hopefully, the next step for Honda will be a luxury Civic 2 liter diesel with a top speed of 260 kph and 3 liters @ 120 kph, 4 liters @ 140 kph and 5 liters @ 160 Now THAT would be interesting. I'd buy that car over this one...

Thanks Thomas, great review. I agree it's great that Honda builds this car. It's very aggressive, both in terms of styling and performance. They really went all out on this car, and the record lap on the Nordschleife is proof that they were very effective! For people, who like this type of car this is one of the best options! That said I personally do not like the styling at all. Even the standard Civic is already an ugly duckling, in my view. The next generation Civic is quite good looking though, both the interior and exterior are a huge improvement. I'm looking forward to seeing that car in Europe!
Firstly I hit the like button not because I like the car, instead for the review. Thanks for the reviews. The rear end looks fugly. An oversize diffuser and the spoiler. I'm not a great fan of downsizing. Pumping 310 ps from a 2 liter mill. Bit too much. The center console looks like a Chinese video game tablet. Liked the seats. Too much red every where. The reason why it feels cramped is because it is designed by japanese for the chinese. No offense. The best part is the motor and reliability. Honda should bring accord v6 to Deutschland.
Lot of mix feelings with this car. I didn't drove one, but I have sit in one. The seats are wonderful. Really the best seats I have ever come across. The dashboard on the otherside is really 2005. The materials, ergonomics and design is really outdated. From the outside it is just hideous in my opinion. Could you imagine picking up your date with this car? She would laugh at you.
Manual gearbox has to be made in Japan honda car then the gear box is good. Made in USA and mexico hondas are bad quality hondas FYI they use cheaper manual, clutch and parts.
+MetalsForBrunch it was used but 35K on it. It gave me problem around 62K. My 3rd and 4th gear start giving me problem and lost compression in 3rd cylinder and one of my friend he bought 09 A3, which is still same as day one and he put around 185k. He just replaced 2 ignition coils.
i love that honda go crazy on the styling since its supposed to be a special edition car. as in a hyper civic. when i see a golf r, it looks just like any other golf. i just hate two tone seats! go back to red recaros honda!
Like the English would say, not my cup of tea ;-) Must be a blast to drive but the design is all over the place inside and out but then again, it's not supposed to be bland and mainstream.
It's WAY TOO MUCH!!!! Which sucks because I'm a Honda Civic Freak!!! I've had several Civics and Preludes and would buy a new one with this engine, but just couldn't with this RIDICULOUS styling. SORRY. Please try again Honda, and please remake the Prelude!!
Hey the old Type Rs had: thinner glass, no sound insulation (at all), no cruise control. This model is already quite luxurious compared to tradtional Type Rs. :)
***** It's for "weight reduction", electric seats are too heavy for a Type R. Typical BMW electric seats are nearly 20kg if I recall correctly, versus about 8-10kg for a manual bucket seat. :) Not that the Recaro-style deep buckets are that light (compared to the carbon-fibre Recaros found in the original NSX Type R), but these have always been a concession to comfort in the high-volume Type Rs. :)

Es ist dieser Fast&Furious Style, der die Zielgruppe anspricht. Ich gehöre auch zu der Zielgruppe, weiche da aber lieber auf den Leon Cupra aus, damit kann man auch bei seinen Kunden vorfahren.

I agree it's great that Honda builds this car. It's very aggressive, both in terms of styling and performance. They really went all out on this car, and the record lap on the Nordschleife is proof that they were very effective! For people, who like this type of car this is one of the best options!
That said I personally do not like the styling at all. Even the standard Civic is already an ugly duckling, in my view. The next generation Civic is quite good looking though, both the interior and exterior are a huge improvement. I'm looking forward to seeing that car in Europe!

Firstly I hit the like button not because I like the car, instead for the review. Thanks for the reviews. The rear end looks fugly. An oversize diffuser and the spoiler. I'm not a great fan of downsizing. Pumping 310 ps from a 2 liter mill. Bit too much. The center console looks like a Chinese video game tablet. Liked the seats. Too much red every where. The reason why it feels cramped is because it is designed by japanese for the chinese. No offense. The best part is the motor and reliability. Honda should bring accord v6 to Deutschland.
The car is build for riding on the circuit!!!!!

Lot of mix feelings with this car. I didn't drove one, but I have sit in one. The seats are wonderful. Really the best seats I have ever come across. The dashboard on the otherside is really 2005. The materials, ergonomics and design is really outdated.
From the outside it is just hideous in my opinion. Could you imagine picking up your date with this car? She would laugh at you.

I prefer Golf. I had very bad experience with this honda manual gear box.
Manual gearbox has to be made in Japan honda car then the gear box is good. Made in USA and mexico hondas are bad quality hondas FYI they use cheaper manual, clutch and parts.
+MetalsForBrunch Mine k20 engine was made in Japan too. I dnt know about transmission. Engine gave me very hard time.

+MetalsForBrunch it was used but 35K on it. It gave me problem around 62K. My 3rd and 4th gear start giving me problem and lost compression in 3rd cylinder and one of my friend he bought 09 A3, which is still same as day one and he put around 185k. He just replaced 2 ignition coils.

i love that honda go crazy on the styling since its supposed to be a special edition car. as in a hyper civic. when i see a golf r, it looks just like any other golf. i just hate two tone seats! go back to red recaros honda!
It's consistent with the old ones anyway. The Japanese model Type R: bright red seats, white exterior, big wing etc. :)
Like the English would say, not my cup of tea ;-) Must be a blast to drive but the design is all over the place inside and out but then again, it's not supposed to be bland and mainstream.

It's WAY TOO MUCH!!!! Which sucks because I'm a Honda Civic Freak!!! I've had several Civics and Preludes and would buy a new one with this engine, but just couldn't with this RIDICULOUS styling. SORRY. Please try again Honda, and please remake the Prelude!!

Hey the old Type Rs had: thinner glass, no sound insulation (at all), no cruise control. This model is already quite luxurious compared to tradtional Type Rs. :)

***** It's for "weight reduction", electric seats are too heavy for a Type R. Typical BMW electric seats are nearly 20kg if I recall correctly, versus about 8-10kg for a manual bucket seat. :) Not that the Recaro-style deep buckets are that light (compared to the carbon-fibre Recaros found in the original NSX Type R), but these have always been a concession to comfort in the high-volume Type Rs. :)
