This is part I of My Journey to Primitive The David Holladay Story. A story of the people who taught me primitive and how I came to Primitive Survival.
Best line EVER: "You know, the whole time I was faking it. I actually HAD stone tools, I just wanted to show you that I CAN use steel..."
Much respect do David, he is the closest thing to truly living that I know.
Thanks young man for the story I always enjoyed your style of story telling
I love watching and listening to this gentleman. Not so much for the skills, but the wisdom from life and meeting people. I think his segment on NO MAN'S LAND was the best of that series. He has a quiet calm and has clearly learned to live in harmony with nature, not to fight against it.
I could not agree more
Amazing series. So thankful you’ve shared this. If you could find more people like this to interview, I’d be very grateful
Oh, I've got lists of people like this. Granted there is only Dave Holladay. The hard part is getting time and money to make it happen. That's why I have the patreon in the links. But I know that ultimately it will be a labor of love to finish this.
Fine video. Your lucky to have had the opportunity to spend time with him! The kind of guy you just follow around and hope that your brain can sponge up all the information!
Exactly! Now you know why I run this channel. LOL, My secret.
Very inspiring! I love listening to people tell there tails! Thanks for sharing this with us Tyler!
It's an amazing thing isn't it. Especially from someone who is so good at telling tails.
This is the stuff that that strengthens and inspires me, even while all around me seem to be losing their way. Thank you TJack, and thank you David Holladay!
Brawl Dawg I appreciate you watching and Sharing. Respectfully me
Mr Holiday. Good to see you again, and reaching out to the world to share your knowledge. Some of my fondest memories are of that year at Rabbitstick, with my Mother, Colleen. An amazing time that I shall never forget :)
I'll relay the message when I see him again.
Thanks David, i was never one of your official students, but you took time to help me at Slick Rock one year.
I'll relay the message.
Awesome!
just started the series TJack. will watch episode 2 tonight after work!
Hey brother! You need to visit Utah and do a video with me some day.
Thanks Dave! And T Jack!
Thanks for watching and sharing!
Wow! Much respect!
David Holiday... A good man ...one of the best humans I’ve had the pleasure of spending time with. I thank him for the profound impact he has had in my life,my children’s life and all whom make his acquaintance. Blessings
Excellent and agreed on that comment. I'm uploading another video he did with me right now. Check back soon.
Glad I stumbled on your channel, I'm in the middle of watching "no man's land" and decided to see if I could find more about David holiday, great video and content! 👍👍
He is a good friend of mine. Check out the play list on this channel. I’ve made a lot of content with him.
Nice way to start vids!!! Love the intro my friend well done!!! Great story by a great man!
Thanks man! Thanks for the sub and the FB comments.
thank you for this video.
Hey thank you for watching and sharing
That was great! I've known about David since I was a kid and always wanted to meet him growing up in the southwest. I was saturated on native culture and only living an arms length away when he taught in Tucson. Larry's book was the first one I had also . Did a hand drill fire when I was probably 11 or so and made a self bow . My parents didn't know I built the bow and an arrow so I kept it hidden thinking I would get in trouble. I later heard about Rabbit Stick and always intended on going but life happens. Might make it yet now that my wife and I are more likely to travel.
Great video 👍
I seriously hope you do. If it is next year I will be there and say hello. Respectfully me.
Outstanding!
Thank you!
Awesome! 👍
John Klopp Thanks John
Absolutely fascinating. Just watched Les Stroud speak of Dave....searched his name....and found your video. Excellent work on this man. Thank You.
Thanks! I’ve got an interview with Less as well that’s on this same playlist. Dave is Also in the video.
A Wonderful Story Thank You So Much For Sharing
He thanks for sharing this story. It helps to get it out.
SO Nice ‼️‼️
love your videos
Thanks Sue.
Hey David I just subscribed to your channel I did not think to look you up when I first seen you with mors a d the rest of the group and my auto play brought you up after watching that power house line up. Glad to be here
Scott Baine TWISTED_KEEL_ADVENTURES Hi Scott I’m Tyler. Dave doesn’t do UA-cam but he’s a friend of mine so you will see him in my channel as time permits. Thanks for the subscription and for watching. Ty
Never gets old watching
nutthrower he’s entertaining huh
I like this gentleman. Thank you for sharing.
He is a good man. Thank you also for sharing this video with your friends.
Fantastic !
Thank you
I love Dave! He would pop in and out of the Arizona landscape when I worked with Anasazi Foundation. Loved hearing his knowledge and wisdom as he spoke with Larry Olson, Ezekiel Sanchez, Paul Newman, Rod Dotson, and a few others that would ‘ghost’ into camp from who knows where!
All people I really want to film with soon. Thanks for stopping by.
Fantastic Video! Well shot and edited. I am a new subscriber. Can't wait to check out your other vids.
Hey, thanks. I've been on a break from filming for a while, but I will be back in the saddle and will be filming the rest of this series soon. I plan on doing them as a series once my job changes up later on this year. Thank you for your sub, and comments, and for sharing this video. Respectfully Ty
I just had to rewatch this. Thank you for putting out great videos like this. I can't wait to see the next one
Hey, thanks. I have a couple filmed up but need more footage. Hopefully, by the end of the year, I can get stuff edited up. Thanks for watching and sharing!
If you're in the area when I film you are always welcome to come along.
Exactly! Love it.
Thanks Rita
That was incredible.
This is one of my favorites. I can sit and listen to Dave tell stories all day long.
Yeah, he’s a great guy.
Incredible
Agreed. Thank you for watching and sharing.
Just absolutely a fully fantastic video and amazing man. I blame my start on a book "Stalking The Wild Asparagus", so I understand where he came from. Add to it the Firefox series as they came out.
Thanks again for this, and I look forward to further installments!
Now I have a book to look into!
Euell Gibbons wrote Stalking The Wild Asparagus back in 1962, but I didn't read it until 1968.
Here is a site to download the first five of the six volumes of the Foxfire Project, which started in 1968 as well.
www.tapatalk.com/groups/nagual/the-foxfire-series-of-survival-books-t1770.html
I'll check that out THANKS!
A good story! 🐾
Very!

Troy Stutsman Hi thank you for watching and subscribing, I have more in the pipe. Also check out the other episodes
Womderful!
He's an amazing storyteller, isn't he? Please share. That helps us.
I thought you guys looked familiar. Met you many moons ago. Happy to see you both. Carry on with blessings.
Thanks for stopping by.
Świetny film, Świetny facet! I love it! Thanks!
Thanks Pawel.
TJack Survival - OK Jack!
Takes me back to hiking with Dave in the 1990's along with a bunch of teens. I remember the hand drill story too.
OH man that's awesome.
I am going to share your video with some old wilderness instructors. Great job on the filming.
Thank you and please do! I want this to reach as many people as possible and I have more coming in the pipeline.
Wise decision but also taught you about how you can live life without the world itself.I admire you alot!!!
Agreed
I really enjoyed this documentary. Well done to all who produced it.
As far as videography, production, editing it was all me. However, the original idea for all of this was Dave Holladays. But thank you. It's no small task making something like this. You sharing it helps me immensely.
Way cool I used to look at the whole earth catalog I still have one from that time that’s some cool hippie stuff I love it !
I need to google it admittedly.
great video
Thanks Phyllis
This was amazing! I Like this David Holladay. Thanks for introducing me.
He is good people, and thanks for watching Tara.
I loved watching him on the show " No Man's Land " .
He's is a natural born entertainer and story teller for sure.
What is the name of those Orange colored rocks that he collects and makes into jewelery ?
Phillip S. English Sorry man I have no idea. I’ll ask next time if I remember when I see him again
"dont worry ill cut it"
doesn't cut it lmao
What a great guy
Agreed!
It's strange how I seen him on discovery and I was amazed at how he was going to meet his son I had a weird feeling of being interested into the stones that they were collecting for his son if I remember right to sell or trade
It's people and places like this that make USA amazing and truly beautiful because they love there history
I'm a new subscribe and fan from Toronto Canada and I hope that one day this is how people feel about this country
Thank you. Toronto is beautiful. Yes, he makes amazing primitive jewellery. I'm wearing an arrowhead that he made right now on double wrapped dogbane rope. The man has tapped into something primal that we all seem to be looking for. I'm editing another video of his right now. You help me by sharing these videos. Thank you for watching.
Thank you for sharing! Look forward to watching the others.
Armstrong Survival Excellent!
It's funny....I forgot about Larry Dean Olson's book I read that back in the 70's ....and I learned about living on the land and went and lived in a tipi in Ky for awhile...then I went back to the city ...and that was 35 years ago. I miss it.
Come back to the dark side! LOL
So happy to have seen this video.
Real men do exist. That makes me equally happy.
Hey thanks. I loved filming this and am still in the process of filming more like this. Thank you and stay tuned for more in the future.
Congratulations on all of your success! This is so awesome!
Thanks Boss!!!
This is one of the best survival videos I have ever seen. Wow your story is almost the same as the one that got me started.
I have to think that many people got started that way. But who knows. Thanks for watching this video. Please share and watch the other videos in the series.
Use the “floating hand” method for the hand drill.
And I believe Tom learned from both Larry’s book AND Grandfather at the same time.
That’s hilarious. Interesting coincidence
33:22 haha, my favorite part
He's a funny dude, isn't he.
I am pretty sure i saw this yesterday...or dreamed it last night. I enjoyed David Holladay enough to watch again...
Ya I had to remove and reload, but this one is here to stay! Thank you for rewatching it and sharing it. I lost momentum there and hope to get it back again with this video.
Thank you T-Jack. Beautiful video.
Hey thank you very much.
tj.....great video......good to watch again.......xx kudos
Thanks Kim. More will come this fall.
10:39 ...What is the Name of this book , he mentions
Larry Nowlson ?? Knolsen ?? Nolson??
I'd like to check out this book.
Great video. Enjoyed listening to the story and learning some stuff about an interesting subject. Thanks
Glad to hear it!
Nice guy. Most of us make attempts to return to the city - this guy made it the principle never to return. Interesting perspective.
I get it though. The wild will always draw me far more than anything that can be had in a city.
💚
Thanks
Thanks for sharing this. What a beautiful soul, and great knowledge. I'm truly inspired.
You are so welcome
Right on the "POINT!." ☺😊😀 👍👍 👌 ✌ ✋
Nailed it huh!
First 10 seconds of Dave Holiday, in thinking "That's Donald Sutherland"... but, then he looked up and started talking and it was gone. Lol
Awesome, LOL
Wait a minute...you mean to tell me there wasn't an 80 year old displaced Apache wandering the woods in New Jersey in the 1960s that taught a young white boy all the secrets of the universe? I'm floored. - Great video, man. I think I was 19 or so when the movie "Castaway" came out and I was totally impressed with the fire-plough scene. Come to find out, Dave, Dave, and Steve were the consultants for the movie and had filmed a promo showcasing primitive survival skills. That was my very first entry, other than Jeremiah Johnson (which Olsen consulted for), into primitive skills. I exhausted myself on a canoe trip trying to make a plough ember shortly after watching their promo for the movie. Didn't try again for several years but now spinning embers is a huge part of my life. I'd love to meet Dave one day and shake his hand. - Definitely looking forward to more videos like this!
Have you ever heard the story of who came up with Wilson in the movie? It was a volleyball Dave and Dave found on the beach and one of the three of them was making fun of a film crew member and eventually, Wilson was born. But it does play a pivotal part in survival with the emotional needs of humans. I'll have to get Holladay to tell the correct version of that story. Not my chopped up version here.
Go to the UA-cam channel BladeHQ and look up the fire plough video and you can watch me crush myself failing at trying it with cottonwood. To this day only hibiscus works for me. It's a skill I too need more experience to master.
Ah, Wilson....the only time I've shed a tear over a volleyball.... I'd love to hear the story of Wilson's birth from Dave.
I have it filmed for ReadyMan. I'll ask if they will release it to me and I'll post it here. If not then I'll just film David telling me the story next year when I meet up with him again.
Talking about ol Tom?
My dad always had a dry bag in the canoe. In there was this book. I now teach, and have been since 1993.
Smart dad.
Keele uni Dave agar???
I don't know if anyone noticed, but when he made fire, he did a joke about primitive man discovering fire, and the first thing he did with it was warm his butt. Pretty funny. A little bit of this guys natural playfulness came through in a relatively serious interview. You need that playfulness to really enjoy doing what he's doing.
Jim F he’s hilarious in that way if you’re playing attention. That’s what makes him entertaining
This is Awesome...ive watched the Pollen Circle series with David
Do you have a link for that? I'd love to se.
TJack Survival ill get a link Tyler but if you type in David Holloday or "Pollen Circles" here on UA-cam theres like 7 parts !!
TJack Survival ua-cam.com/video/p9AmcWh544Q/v-deo.html part 1

Hey, thank you. More to come this fall.
This is an amazing story, with so much inspiration. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for watching.
Excellent video. Just downloaded the first book he mentioned. Thanks for sharing this story.
Barron Link Thanks! I’ve got other suggestions I’ll help you with. Look at Mors Kohanski’s Bushcraft book too.
@@TJackSurvivalWill do! 👍🏼
Since abo 101 I have admired you and what you do Colbert live free or die 🤔🐠😊
Watching this now doing this crazy time in America with his whole virus thing really makes you think we all need to know how to survive on our own depend only on one person.... YOURSELF
joeybagadonuts 73 this is why he and I and others teach.
@@TJackSurvival would really love to come to one of those schools now more than ever
whats the name of the instrument @ 34:10
or even tune ?
Matt Graham did that music. Check him out right here. ua-cam.com/video/7pcX8lSF0H0/v-deo.html
I got permission from him to use that music. He did that in a slot canyon close to where this was filmed. I thought it appropriate to put in this video.
what was the name of the author of the book
I think you’re referring to Larry Dean Olsen’s book Outdoor Survival Skills.
Wow! looks hard making a fire there! just clap your hands and the friction from that should instantly burst into a bonfire. lol try that up here in Canada where you have wet, wet everything is wet even with your pockets full of tinder it will be a challenge.
For him it's not hard. Here or there. Granted, while water changes things it does not make it impossible.
That's why I said a challenge not impossible
Pretty cool! ❤️
An amazing story huh.
THAT was F*in GREAT!!!
Lou B Thanks Lou!
Why the hell didn't you put a link to for us to get the book?
I can do that. Go to my Amazon link in the bottom of this video and click on the book section.
It's the first link in the discussion box on my Amazon store.
Seen David in a History channel show called No Mans Land. He was my favorite person on the show.
He's also been behind the scenes and on the screen with everyone from Les Stroud in Arizona to helping Bear Gryls with friction fire, to helping consult on Castaway with Tom Hanks just to name a few. He's been around. Probably one of the best desert survival instructors in the US.
This is my uncle ?? I just found this video hi uncle David
There’s more videos of him on the Rabbitstick play list. I was filming with him this weekend actually. He’s a great man.
Your silent friend for decades 🤔☺️
i hiked with him . the conversations i had with him saved my life. dude lives on a bag of oats and cranberries for five days , he is the most inspirational person ever.
There can be only one.
Any ideas how to find a group of people who want to live primitive?
Lauren Mintz go to the gatherings and ask. Look up Rabbitstick.
Is there anyway to get in contact with David?
Thanks for making this video. He is a funny and interesting guy. I hope to meet him one year at Rabbitstick (if I can work it out). It is good to know where he got some of his knowledge and then he passes it on to others. He is one who has walked the walk and knows of what he speaks.
Hope to see you then.
Good to see my cousin-in-law. Keep up this series, many elder statesmen of the primal skills need to have their stories made while they are still with us. As an archaeology student at Arizona, I remember the mini-exhibits. Took a knapping class from Francois Bordes in the 60's there.
That's awesome! I plan to go as far as my time and money will allow me to on these projects.
apachie grandfather'' sounds like your hinting at TOM BROWN JR. ive read all his books..well dam you learn sumpin ery day.,.
Anthony Tindell Yep... ;)
I wonder if Tom brown jr is the alegend Appatchi student he spoke of?
I'm not touching that one... LOL, (Yep)
TJack Survival 😉 great books either way
Here's to 16K brother!
Boo Yeaaa! Thank you!
Looks like a large chunk of Binlatha Opal, from West Australia, on his left.
Australian Survival Instructors highly possible
Is it a prerequisite to wear a neck knife?
Bill Peart from what I can tell Mors Kochsnski started that trend up north due to how much easier it is to access your blade that way. It just picked up and stuck around because it works so well. You do what you want though. No ones forcing you to wear your knife anywhere.
He reminds of cc or don juan
LOL we in Europa Handdrill and flint'n'metal in School so i was shown how in 1987 but im danish and we dont forget our past like the amarikans
America is a big place.
Haha love the cave man impressions 👍👍🔥
He's a stud to watch!
one question. why do all guys who live in the bush wear long orange clothing?
Because the dirt there is orange and it changes the color of your shirts. Long sleves are also excellent protection against the sun.
WOW. How have I never heard of your channel?? Your interviews are terrific. Dave Wescott, Paul Kirtley, Dave Holladay, Les Stroud!! These are the best, longest, most comprehensive interviews I have seen to date. Great stuff 👍🏻
Thank you. They have cost me a ton of money and time to make. I’m happy to hear people enjoying them.
