Woolie stealing the show like nobody's business. Bless this man. Jokes aside, everyone here made great points. I think rollback and crossplay is what should be at upmost priority, but like Woolie brought up, there are some nice QOL touches spread between different games that I think every fighting game should take notice of.

One small thing I really liked about jmcrofts's interview is that he didn't have to diminish online play to highlight why he's looking forward to the return of offline play.
He says there's a "next-level of hype" that you can only experience offline, but that doesn't imply that online play isn't hype.
He also says "online-only era", in contrast to how I've heard a lot of people describe the pandemic as simply "the online era."
I don't know if that was the intention, but that's what I got out of it.

  • @varia5845

It’s crazy how often the FGC has to fight for basic QOL features that makes games more accessible to play offline and easier to play online mainly from Japanese devs. That has to change.
At least Arc Sys and SNK are making that much needed push towards rollback.

I want to see more casual modes, especially co-op. I play stuff online with my brother sometimes, like Counter-Strike (he doesn't really play fighting games), and while I'm not super into CS, being able to play together is enough to make it worth it.
Just something as simple as a 2v2 queue where you split off into separate 1v1 matches and if the teams go 1-1 the two winning players fight a final match would make introducing newcomers so much easier, while also providing a nice change of pace from just grinding ranked over and over. Or if say KOFXV had a mode like TTT2's Pair Play, where you queue up with 2 other players and you each control one of the characters. Stuff like that.
Or even matches with wacky modifiers like in SoulCalibur's single player, where the floor gets slippery or powerups fall from the sky. Just do something goofy that people can be super laid back with.

    • @Akeran87
      @Akeran87 2 роки тому +1

I don't know if you are aware of it but KOFXV has a Party mode online where you can play with up to 6 people, each controlling one character. It is a fun mode and very welcoming to newcomers as they aren't forced to play 3 characters. the mode was present in the latest beta and it was pretty fun. Maybe this could be the thing you are looking for^^

On the macro level I think every FG can do jitter display, crossplay, tournament and stream-friendly lobbies, interactive replay and training mode tools. For the community I would love for more cross-collaboration between content creators and devs that empowers people to continue to show love to their favorite games. More money from devs supporting the infrastructure of tournaments and streams rather than just prize pools. Would like for more content creators being able to make things that highlight what separates the FGC from other communities. Biggest thing for fighting games would be to make tutorial modes that aren't just one-and-done modes that teach basic things, but rather cross-functional mini-games that teach fighting game concepts through other game genres that people can continually come back to (and compete with others)

  • @solarReversal
    @solarReversal 2 роки тому +4

The main thing I want for fighting game developers going forward is to communicate both to, and with, the community clearly. Honestly, the way that ArcSys have been working with their fans to improve features in their current games (Strive and DNF) while also bringing new life to their beloved classics (GGXXAC+R, BBCF), should be the standard for many of the major fighting game developers.
I'd also love to see developers embrace their classics more, beyond just adding rollback to existing ports, but working to bring in new ports with modern features and rollback netcode. Probably not worth the cost/profit ratio, but I can dream of KOF11 or Tekken 5 coming back, darn it.
Lastly, I'd like to see developers try experimenting with new teaching tools. A really cool video was put up on twitter last year by a user named starrrsky who turned a Chipp BnB combo trial into a rhythm game a la DDR to help get the timing down. I'd love to see that kind of thing expanded on in an actual game, or to see what other ideas they could come up with that are as interesting as that.

tournament mode in consoles. Either disable bluetooth altogether or have it not remember the controllers, that way you would remove the responsibility from the players... that usually forget and end up interrupting your match.
tournament mode in-game that remove all intros.
same for PCs... tournament mode in the os (doesn't have to be called tournament mode, obviously) but have them forget any usb bindings as soon as they disconnect in order to make it easier to connect multiple pads/sticks.
and from the players... have more fun and stop complaining about hard matchups.
life's hard, so work hard and get that W.
    great content btw.

    Before I watch the vid:
I want rollback. I want crossplay.
I want in game community based systems (groups, guilds, whatever).
I want replays, replay features (take control, quick foward and rewind, frame advance, etc), and in game ways to find replays for specific characters.
I want robust training mode options (frame data, hitboxes, frame advance, move properties).
I want customization (titles, ranks, cosmetics, rewards).
I want expanded offline modes. Story, arcade, survival, challenges, trials, expanded pve modes like NRS games and smash and some arcsys games. I want these modes to give cosmetics or feed into some sort of ecosystem so that casual players actually want to stick around.
I want console versions without 5+ frames of delay. I want PC versions that actually had care put into them and that work. I want to not have to play system roulette for which system actually plays the game properly.
I want betas that allow the public to test and help refine the game so that we stop having games come out with large technical issues or weird design decisions that cause people to leave.
All of these things have been in fighting games before. All of these things are fairly standard in other major genres. We are in a time period where people are playing more types of fighting games at the same time than ever before. Anime games, traditional 2d, 3d games, weird fighting game offshoots, 2v2 and 3v3 tag fighters. I want the big and medium sized developers to start setting an example that will start pulling numbers from the giant NRS and Nintendo fighting game sales. I want to see the engagement, activity, and community that these developers have propagated for their games spread to other games. I want to see Arcsys, I want to see Capcom, I want to see Bandai Namco start injecting their franchises with more of these types of things. I want to hold fighting games to the same standards that I hold other genres to.

I got bad news announcing that we have decided not to launch Rumbleverse on February 15.
    The Developers said
-Having Grapital City filled with Rumblers taught us a lot. We’re excited about the game we’re making - and we’re glad you are, too - but there’s more we want to do to perfect the experience. More than a game, Rumbleverse will be a community that we want to support for a long time. We’re going to take the time to make sure we can get that right. But there’s good news we can play the game again in February 12 it's for only PC no consoles the reason why is because there testing there PC network test. The test begins at February 12 1:00Pm to 3:00Pm FYI you can get your Refund back from the early access pack.

I have a couple of Hope's for Fighting games. But most importantly the community.
I hope the community is more opened minded to new players and new mechanics whether it be simple inputs/auto combos, etc. Especially when it comes to brand new fighting games that aren't related to established fighting game franchises.
Game Developers need to prioritize cross play and rollback netcode. Even for rereleased titles. No exceptions.
Since they want to attract more new players:
They need to be more transparent on what cancels into what.
Get rid of link based combo systems for the better gatling/chain based system or even adapt the even better reverse beat system.
    Make cancel windows more lenient.
A quick play from the main menu.

    Mostly just rollback.
But if I want something from fighting games itself? It's definitely to reiterate on what helped in the past, for sure.
From the community... well, I can't really ask for much. While I could say more help for beginners and intermediates, especially the latter stage. While resources like dustloop are great, usually very well produced, the mentality when playing competitive games, to me at least, is difficult to adapt to. That it's ok to be salty, ok to not be good, that training will help. And that it's ok to just jump in, not lab things immediately. That losing or winning isn't important.
And I have already seen all of it. Mostly from Sajam, I'll admit. Even analyzing situations. But it sounds grander to me than it is. Like 'I got stuck in the corner, but my opponent needs to dash at me. What can I do that would be the least risky option I have?' or 'My opponent keeps teching my grabs, what can I do against it?' And there's probably content for that already.
Oh yea, and just have fun. The most difficult thing for me. My guess is that I'm too egocentric when I think someone is worse than me. I shouldn't think like that at all. That's what not what it should be about.

  • @s_factor_sam
    @s_factor_sam 2 роки тому +7

While it would be good for fighting games to learn from other FGs, one thing the genre constantly fails to do is to learn from other genres and the successful practices of those genres. No genre is exempt from being able to learn from another, and for the devs and FGC to treat FGs as if they exist in a void separated from the rest of the gaming landscape is foolishness. No two ways about it.
Also, there are more examples of fighting games (and adjacent) with full crossplay besodes just Power Rangers. They're just games that many in the FGC often narrowmindedly write off for one reason or another. Fantasy Strike, Brawlhalla, and the upcoming MultiVersus, off the top of my head.
It's just the traditional fighters that the FGC favors, that are lacking in this and ,any other ways.
Personally, I want the genre to become more fun, by means of the devs putting mpre emphasis on gameplay and game modes/content that's enjoyable to the non-competitive majority who buy the games.
After all, most of EVERY game's audience are not hardcore nor competitive, by a ratio of around 20% hardcore (a minority of that hardcore portion actually being competitive) to 80% casual, and the fighting game genre fails harder than most genres to retain that 80%. This is because the FGC wants the devs to the cater solely to the competitive minority within the hardcore minority and forsake the casual majority, and often give backlash at attempts to retain and grow a legacy franchise's audience beyond the niche by altering gameplay to be comparably approachable to nearly every other genre or take development time away from competitive focus to create quality non-competitive content (like in NRS games and Smash Bros).
I know that, as I get older, my competitive drive decreases along with my time and patience to sink the time demanded by most traditional fighters to begin enjoying the paltry content that's on offer. And I'm not the only person who has been playing fighting games for upwards of 19 years who has been changing with time and disconnecting from the genre because it has been slow to grow out of legacy arcade design sensibilities.
I've been finding more fulfilment per time spent (aka. positive Return On Investment) in fighting game subgenres and games fro other genres with some similarities but enough differences to do much better by today's game design standards and competition in the wider gaming industry.
Oh, and it would be nice to see FG devs stop bottlenecking players into only playing offense-oriented playstyle by designing playstyle that some see as boring out of the game completely and making related skillsets unviable/irrelevant.
I can't count how many times in the last decade that I've tried a new fighter onky to find that the way I want to play is discouraged, prevented, or punished because my skillset was formed by entries of games like SoulCal, DoA, and VF from 2002-2012 actually allowing core defense to be strong without a mountain of mechanics. We need variety in viable playstyles back, instead of forcing offensive play to cater solely to the modern 7-12 second average attention span.

Good rollback netcode, cross-play, & more diverse rosters are what I want from future fighting games. It’s great to see Dolores & Isla bring representation to countries that didn’t have any in KoF as of XV, but I hope this trend continues.
Also, I'm glad to see Cuddle Core in this. It's always great to see a fellow Habesha fighting game player thrive.

My wish for this year is to reopen The Hive in Toronto for offline locals.

8:35 this is a controversal feature in the most literal sense, yes it is cool to grind a in Game to earn stuff for free basicly, but why would you do that? On one hand you deny the devs extra payments which they could use to improve the game and if you buy the DLC with real money you skip the Road to achieve it through Gameplay+ in SFV's Case it's more a curse than a blessing since the Game is so unfun that the real money price (30$/€) for the DLC/Session Passes were reasonable.. but I overall like the feature, though required that the Game is fun in the first place

I want Capcom to get their FG shit together and stop relegating their dormant franchises to Street Fighter content. ArcSys has completely surpassed them on quality output of various fighting games, and I’m not exactly hopeful for SF6 if Luke is any indication (that’s not me saying Luke is terrible, rather that if he’s showcasing what the new game will feature, it’s not what I want).
Darkstalkers, Rival Schools, Power Stone, Star Gladiator/Plasma Sword, Cyberbots, heck, even a new Pocket Fighter. I just want the fun of Capcom classics to return. I want comprehensive collections featuring the past games with incredible rollback to allow them to have an online presence (SNK & ArcSys have eliminated any excuse not to do this), and I want proper quality sequels that match the quality of the classics. Capcom or others complain that the fans aren’t there? They never will be if they stay locked away like they currently are. In fact, so many franchises are locked away, and their whole “Arcade” thing they introduced last year isn’t good enough, especially if there’s no good way to measure which games are popular.
Granted, I don’t expect all of this to appear in 2022, that’d be ridiculous, but I want Capcom to step up and let us know what they’re doing. The seasonal updates of 2021 were ok, but they were not too different from what we had before, just more anticipated (the summer update of 2020 was better since they revealed all but one of the Final FiVe fighters of Season V). Capcom has to see the past decade just didn’t work for their FG department, so hopefully things will turn around.

In all likelihood, it'll probably just be SFVI & another Versus game (MvC or otherwise) again as they amass their fighting game team to return to its former glory. Maybe after both games prove to be hits that the others can return. And while there are rumors of a Power Stone remake from that Capcom leak, there's no telling if it'll see the light of day (see RE Hunk & RE Outrage being internally cancelled).

@@Neoxon619 yup. All the more reason people proclaiming “Capcom is back to their former glory” rings false for me until they fix their fighting games division. Even if new sequels aren’t viable for them now, they’re not doing themselves any favors not releasing older games on modern platforms.

Crossplay is amazing, but I would only like crossplay to everything BUT the nintendo switch. WHY? Well because I own one, and guess what, it doesn't have a FUCKING ethernet cable slot. It forces you to buy one off amazon(which I did) but I know most people playing online WILL be WiFi warriors, which is unacceptable as far as I am concerned. I immediately jumped ship and never play online games with my switch because of this issue.

    • @HYLOBRO

Also Nintendo just sucks ass as a company, games are good, everything else is bad. I do play games like Mario Kart or games that don't really need a stable connection to function fine, but Smash online is excruciating and the main reason I haven't touched it in years, and any other fighting game will be the same on there.

I wholeheartedly agree with Woolie, I hope GBVS will get rollback netcode in 2022 after Cygames seeing the positive responses from BBCF and BBTag. Playing GG Strive on PS4 while living in Indonesia made me realize that crossplay is so important, most of Indonesian players prefer Steam over anything else. It's frustating because I love Strive but there's only so much rollback can do for me to get a stable connection on JP lobbies. What scares me now is that I finally got a chance to play P4 Arena properly next year, but the fear of the game not having rollback and crossplay discouraged me to buy the game due to my experiences with Strive. Multi-platform fighting game is great only if it has crossplay support.
