    A big cowl induction hood scoop and parachute doesn't exactly scream "sleeper" to me!

      I am talking about the scoop. There are some people who would actually, but I agree it is not really a sleeper.

    To be a sleeper it needs to appear and sound fairly stock, if there is a visible roll cage from the exterior, a big ole hood scoop, a deep exhaust note, extra wide tires on the back, a big tach in the front window, or it's lacking paint, it screams something's up and I better investigate further.

    • @MrDmeier
      @MrDmeier 8 років тому

      So if I put a cage, a scoop and a tach in my stock engine vehicle that makes it hoped up lol

    Dropping a 460 into a Fairmont is a bolt in swap. And with the right parts the 429/460 make a lot of power.

    idk.. The helmet, 200 db of sound, and the full rollcage in the back window doesn't seem suspicious at all :D

  • @nitetrane98
    @nitetrane98 7 років тому +14

    These "sleepers" are mostly, "What butt ugly body will fit over this race car?" You can cram 1K HP in the engine compartment of anything. Slicks, skinny front tires, traction bars and 2" exhaust kind of give you away every time. Sleepers came around back in the day to take money from the rich kids in their new muscle cars.

    I, too, had a sleeper once. I dropped a '74 (pre de-tuned) 2 litre engine into my '71 1300 Alfa, with a 1600 diff. No other changes. Those who know Alfa, will know that the only mod needed is to bend the exhaust manifolds to clear the body underneath, due to the 2 litre being a little taller (about 25mm). With no BS, I blew away many 3 litre Fords, BMW 2.5 and almost every GTI Golf I came across. Of course, due to the gearing, that poor little Alfa would only do about 160 kmh on the clock. But the surprised faces made it all worth while!!

    • @g0fvt
      @g0fvt 7 років тому

      The Ford V6 was heavy and made little power, the Granada was heavy and pretty robust. The Alfasud was quite sporty although most died of structural rust by about 5 years of age.

    I had an old beat up Ford Fairmont 4dr back in 96, got it for free from my uncle, it needed a battery and one tire,threw on spare ,tuned it up, had a 6cyl carb, it wasn't quick but it would GO! Cruised nice on highway, drove it for about s year, sold it for $500 ,some guy was wanting front and rear clip for a project, I think I did alright ,it was just like the 2nd car ,same faded silver paint

    I had a 1978 Mercury Zephyr with a 302 and it ran great, The carburetor tuning was a little tricky with the slide valve variable venturi carburetor I rebuilt it and improved the jetting and it would light the tires up, it also got pretty good gas mileage

  • @FR-ji3hw
    @FR-ji3hw 8 років тому +1

    I used to have an old fairmont futura with a 302 in it that surprised a few people over the years. Excellent drift-mobile and pretty fast too. It is a stretched fox chassis, same as the mustang and took the same parts for beefing up. Somebody beefed it up with mustang parts before I bought it. Fun car, wish I still had it.

      +Robert Schumacher Minor technical quibble. The Fairmont/Zephyr is the original Fox chassis, so they aren't technically 'stretched'. The '79-95 (?) Mustang / Capri and the '80 and later Thunderbird/Cougar are derivatives of the Fox chassis.

    I saw a guy with a 1st Gen Bronco make a bunch of money racing it. It was nuts because he still had 4wd in it. And he could hop a Coke bottle with it!!! He would just nail the gas in 4 low and BAM the fronts went up the air like he had hydraulics on it. It was sad though because he wrecked it while racing and the guy got hurt pretty bad. This was 20+ years ago.

    My concern with an older beat up car isnt the body but the undercarriage and chassis rust. I'm assuming with the roll cage most of that was addressed though.

    I love Fairmont Futura coupes, those cars were light and ripe for street sleepers...kind of boring, but it actually had a sleek shape for hot rodding...now the 4 doors on the other hand: granny cars...

    A Fairmont is what a Fox body mustang originated from. So you gain all the Fox Body mustang aftermarket support. Very clever.. Kinda what I rely on for my Falcon, as what is made for the first gen mustang works on my car.
