I was raised with Simon and Garfunkel.. But I have kids that love the alternative music. I'm 67 years old and I'll tell you. The 1st time I heard Disturb do this, I had tears running down my face. I have listen to their other CD's so I knew what they were. And I really like them. But this took them to a whole new level. I glad you played this for yourself.. It is AMAZING!!
yep. me too. I liked S&G's version but i never really got it. With this, it just blew me away. And now I get what I think Paul Simon was after, and it's so much more exciting. Yep, tears every time. (78)
The first time I listened to this cover I cried I am 79 years old I felt so sad for humanity we have got so much so wrong. The passion this man found within himself to sing like this touched my soul.
With age comes wisdom! I was born one year after Pearl Harbor, seeing many conflicts, wars, disasters. Humanity keeps making the wrong decisions. We have lost our North Star. "Hear my voice that I might teach you." We continue to follow the wrong teachers. "Those with ears let them hear." From the true Teacher of humanity.
Listened to this hundreds of times. I am a 70 year old woman and It affects me every time. Love the power of this man's voice. I was only 15 when I first heard the original but wow, this version is absolutely the best
Listening to disturb singing this is completely what we heard from Simon and Garfunkel...we knew ....we understood their message....I love this version also...but it's sad ...it's an urgent appeal to humanity ❤
My favourite interpretation is that the original version by Simon & Garfunkel is a warning, while the Disturbed version is a bitter lament that the original warning went unheeded. It's amazing how the same lyrics can take on such different meanings to people based entirely on how they're performed.
@@PatR2243 Yeah, but he's not just plain out "screaming". He's actually singing with anger in the voice. For those who aren't aware, he actually took Opera Lessons to train his voice and vocal chords just so that he wouldn't ruin them. He's a world class musician! And his voice is something else.
It is absolutely worth mentioning that this is _not_ typical of Disturbed. They really went out on a limb, stretched their own style to places it had never been before, and it worked. Because they're so talented, the original song's lyrics and composition are so incredible, and they spent so much effort on it, it worked. I think David (the singer) said that this song took him like 3 hours in the recording booth to get right, trying different ways to sing each and every verse, not sure which ones would work. When the producer showed David the final mix, he said he was terrified that David didn't like it because there was complete silence coming from where David was standing behind him--but when he turned around he saw that David had just a couple tears running down his face because it was so beautiful, and he hadn't fully comprehended that beauty himself when he'd sang it earlier in the booth.
@@carolmayhardie I really liked Uninvited Guest! I do have all their albums, because apparently I'm a weirdo who still buys albums instead of just adding the singles to a Spotify playlist. There's also a slower song entitled _Don't Tell Me_ on their latest album, _Divisive,_ from November of last year.
In hindsight, it was always there, just under the surface. As early as the "Believe" album. He has classical training as a cantor, and his melodic breadth could be readily heard in songs like "Remember" and, most notably, "Darkness." Both of those have comparably less harsh vocals than a lot of their more popular songs. Listen to both of those back to back, and suddenly "The Sound of Silence" seems like an obvious next step.
I always Listen to Music from the 70's and 80's and 90's but always Listen to Disturbed and when this Song comes on I Cried now I'm 52 year's old I still listen to this Music
I'm 74 and was amazed the first time I heard it. I can get enough of this song. It's so profound, the meaning of the song is amazing. We lack true compassion and communication. My feeling of the meaning the neon god they made makes me think of how kids and even adults are so involved in phones and computers, etc; that no one communicates with each other. I feel that it is ruining our kids, they just sit around on their gadgets. Unlike when we were children, we were outside a lot, creating our own fun. Obesity in our children is outrageous. It's sad to see it. It's like so many of the children are like zombies, with no social skills or comunication.
The emotions are vast in this version. Suffering from depression from losing 3 friends to mental illness, this song releases all the torment ....it's helping me to recover 😊. Thanks.
Pure talent. The danger of a song being iconic is that the words are so familiar that we forget their meanings, unless someone brilliant presents it to us in a new way. So glad you covered Disturbed's version. Thanks Nick.
Yeah, especially on the "Silence like a cancer grows." line and "The people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made." David puts so much emotion into it that it recontexualizes the whole song...especially with that epic instrumental backing...
Thank you for doing this video. I've watched a lot of these videos around Disturbed's version of this fantastic song. I grew up with this original playing on the radio, so I'm old. Lol I've never been a metal fan, until this song my adult kids played for me a year or so ago. I've since read an article where David supposedly said this version is his answer to the warning in the original song we all ignored. Think about it. It makes perfect sense that the same song could have such different meanings all in the way it's presented to the audience. I love both versions and am now a big Disturbed fan.
His voice is made for this song. Paul Simon praised him for this interpretation. David's voice really make you REALLY hear the lyrics and actually LISTEN. Thank you for reacting to this!
A cover that is beyond great, Sarah Bereilles cover of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is another that has to be mentioned, Elton John gave her high praise for her version. ua-cam.com/video/Ozd2ja7mAgM/v-deo.html
Same for me. I love watching the reactions and never get tired of hearing it. I get goosbumps and tears every time. I may have gotten goosebumps when S & G sang it, but did not get the meaning of the words like I do when David Draiman ... I can't say "sings it" it is much more than singing or even preforming.... ❤❤
@@Boulevard1800gonna have to respectfully disagree. Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt originally by Trent Reznor Nine Inch Nails is far and away the best cover ever.
I came across this song one night after my husband of 50 yrs passed away. I played it so much whenever i couldnt take another step, he made me feel like his arms were wrapped around me and i wasnt afraid to try to face another day. I shiver each time i here his voice!
I am gobsmacked every time I hear that version. David, the lead singer for Disturbed, is a classically trained singer, so not only can he scream music, he can sing it with all the pathos this song needs. Check out the live version from when they were on Jimmy Kimmel. It is also very powerful. I also read that Paul Simon put this video on his webpage, which he never has done before. He called David and told him that the song belonged to him. I get goosebumps every time.
My uncle is a grammy award winning producer & paul Simon is my cousins godfather. So believe me when I say, this rendition is 100% Paul Simon approved! He was floored
Goose bumps...every time. I always say Paul wrote this as a warning and David delivers the rebuke for not listening to the warning. David's lifelong vocal training really shines here.
@@cosette999 Yeah, the late 70's and 80's "ME" generation really did a number on my generation. There still a lot of us that still believe in equality for all, support for the vulnerable members of society, support for the things that upraise humanity (the arts, the environment, education). It's just our voices aren't loud enough anymore to rise above those who don't.
After Disturbed blew my mind with this version of Sound of Silence, my mind was blown AGAIN when I discovered that Paul Simon, who I imagine you know Wrote this song, listened to the live Conan version, then Emailed Disturbed and told them that, in short, this song is theirs now. That's how much HE loves their take on his song.
That actually did not happen, although Simon approved of their version. You are thinking of Trent Reznor's reaction after seeing Johnny Cash's video for "Hurt"
@@hectorsmommy1717It actually did happen, but what Paul Simon actually said is that he put their version on his playlist and that he wanted to sing the song more like David Draiman did, but he was told no by the record company because he was a folk singer. He never said that it was now Disturbeds song
We live in a time where people bow over the neon god (cell phone) so they can talk without speaking (constant texting.) The song was prophetic. Disturbed's version makes you realize that.
Am I i the only person hearing this that feels the urge to get out of bed and go look for people to talk to. To listen too. To share encouragement with. I don’t think I’ve ever hear a song with a stronger message.
David ROCKED this song... The first time I heard it every hair on my arms were up and I was mezmorized by the end of the song. Without a shadow of a doubt THE VERY BEST MAKEOVER OF A SONG IN HISTORY! Never before have I seen so much emotion in a song... And if you like the song go hear him in concert.... worth every penny that ticket cost you.... even if just for this song. He is a MUSICAL GENIUS. This is without a doubt my very favorite song ever..... and I was a DJ for 18 years.
Wow, Disturbed really captured the Essence of this song, it grabbed my heart, whereas the original version, did not have the same reaction. The power of his voice" The Neon God they Made" that was Supernatural, I felt " The Creator of the Universe" blast through his Voice, Amazing!
"Holy Shit" is the correct, perfect, appropriate, response to this song the entire way through. I have listened to this version more than the original at this point (and I'm an old). It NEVER fails to hit me and make me feel. Physically, emotionally, mentally. It is timeless. David Draiman is a generational talent. His resonance, range, and pure magic hits every single nerve in me. I love it so much.
Over 50 here, and long-time Simon and Garrfunkel fan... The first time I heard this I was driving home from work, and literally became lightheaded enough from the chills it gave me that I had to pull off the side of the highway. Then I got home and listened to it non-stop for the next 8 hours or so. THIS is one of the examples I pull out whenever someone insists the original version of any song is always better.
I read that Paul Simon reached out to him and told him he was very impressed with his version and even directed people to it on his social media accounts.
I will be 80 in October and have fallen down the Disturbed well. I have enjoyed most kinds of music over the years including metal, but kind of got away from catching the new stuff...this cover brought me to Disturbed and it has been love at first listen. I'll be attending my first rock concert to celebrate becoming an octogenarian.
This may be a bit controversial, but I think this version might actually be better than the original. So powerful. Starts softs and builds to an incredible crescendo Then back to soft at the end. Pure genius, absolute perfection! Loved watching your reaction!
Paul Simon was totally impressed, posted it on his media page, said the song was now David's. David brought out the true feelings that Paul Simon meant when writing it. His words. I only heard this about 6 weeks ago, now a total fan of the band, and I'm a 70 y o grandma. They have so many amazing songs...The Light, A Reason to Fight, but even the heavy metal songs are fabulous.
This guy is not just another 'First Time Hearing/Seeing' You Tuber who tries to give a convincing talk about their feelings on what they are showing. You can actually see his reaction to this song not only on his face but by the fact the hair raised on his arms while he was listening. This is a channel I'll watch again.
@@nickforell1 I have seen it said that people describe Simon and Garfunkel's version as the warning and this version as the anger that the warning was ignored. Glad I got to watch you react to it now I'm going to watch your reaction to the live version and then the Pentatonix version after that.
This is the best and the most beautiful version of Sound of Silence I have ever heard. David and Disturbed put their heart and soul into this version. I get extremely emotional when l hear it. I can't imagine anyone else but David singing it. He has the perfect voice. God bless Disturbed.
O.M.G. I’ve never been more moved by a remake of a song more than this. Disturbed CRUSHED it completely. His voice, the buildup, the peak…. Full body goosebumps. Their version is HAUNTINGLY perfect. ❤❤❤
It made me cry when I fist heard this. His voice, the words, are impeccably moving. It was so powerful. Simon & Garfunkel's song was a warning we didn't heed. Disturbed's beautiful rendering is a condemnation of our blithe ignorance of what we could become. It is what we are now. There is too much technology that separates us.
I was a teenager in the 60's when S and G released this song. I loved it,and then a few years ago,my brother sent me this version..bloody hell!! I cried!! It is now the song I play over and over in my car,as I sing loudly and badly. This song was written for HIS voice, love it.
I'm 68 and though I always loved the Simon and Garfunkel original version when I first heard Disturbed sing it I swear it moved me more than any song I've ever heard. I'm alone in this world so this song strikes a chord with me.
the performance of this group shakes every cell of the body. I also grew up in the era of Simon and Garfunkel, but this band's performance is like a thunder storm, shaking body and soul. Not everyone can do it, but they did. The entire performance, masters of musical instruments and the incredible power of the singer's voice, power that shakes you to the core of your soul.
David was trained as a cantor, and has great control over his voice, so that he can do that heavy metal growl without damaging his vocal cords. And this is a brilliant rendition of a great song.
I was hesitant to hear this version until recently thinking nothing can compare with the original. Man was I wrong. This breathes new profound meaning in today's society.
I love this song in general both the original as well as Disturbed's version. There is however another. You might want to check out Pentatonix's version of this song, it's equally as impressive.
@@josequintana9617 You're welcome, it's definitely worth checking out! Their version may not be as impactful as Disturbed's yet the quality of their voice and performance is just as good. The historical, emotional and personal vibe of the song coming from the original artists Simon & Garfunkel is a hard song for another band to cover while doing the song justice and so far Disturbed has owned it, and Pentatonix is a worthy contender.
Layers upon layers of chills and goosebumps in this version. The first few times I listened to it, I caught myself forgetting to breathe. Best cover ever? Quite possible.
I was very young when this song originally came out yet somehow I remember it. David does this song so much justice. His amazing voice puts such feeling into each verse. Just amazing.
When i first heard Disturbed Sound of Silence i could not believe i could love this song more than the original , i was so wrong best cover ever ! ❤❤❤ Peace everyone
Until I heard this version I would have never given metal music a chance, I'm 66 and now love all of their music....favorites are 'Stricken', 'Stupify' and 'Hold on to Memories'. Hope you'll cover more Disturbed....great reaction!
I'm 60, have been a hard rock fan for years but Disturbed is on a whole different level! My favorite is Hold On To Memories. I want it played at my funeral. They have a true message.
Absolutely No one can Beat David Draiman He was the First to do this and I’ve Heard others But David is the N01 of this Song no one will Ever Forget this Song it was Amazing ❤️❤️❤️👍
I loved watching you discover this song. It was cool that you had such a personal connection to this song through your father. I loved watching how the incredible power and drama of the song repeatedly took your breath away and the absolute disbelief in your eyes. Such a powerful experience, such an incredible crescendo, then back to sweet and tender. SO POWERFUL!! Thanks for sharing this with us!
I saw and felt the message all those years ago when it came out. It's a powerful message even now. I felt the sadness in the original and I share the anger in this version. Disturbed is definitely my favourite version.
I've been a Disturbed fan for a long time, but even I was a bit apprehensive when they announced this cover. The first time I heard it (no video), I just melted into it. I thought, "this is what this song was always meant to be".
David Draiman has an amazing voice, he really puts passion into the song, they also did Land of Confusion by Genesism the song Sound of Silence was written by Paul Simon on his own
It's so powerful! The first time I heard it I had to pull the car over because I was crying. Then I hit replay about 9 times in a row. And now I'm a weirdo who stalks every reaction video, because I love sharing their moment of discovery as if it was my first. Disturbed doesn't have more than a few songs in this style, they're generally pretty heavy. Their videos are always beautifully produced and artistic. More in this vein would be: Hold Onto Memories; The Light; A Reason To Fight; If I Ever Lose My Faith In You (cover of Sting's song). But David's vocals are glorious even under the distortion and you can usually understand most of the words. Heavier music to check out first ... one of my favorites is "Are You Ready?" Or one of their newer ones, "Divisive." A fairly undiscovered gem on their newest album is a duet with Ann Wilson from Heart. The goddess of rock is still slaying it in her early 70s. Actually ... you liked the build up in this song, so you might enjoy Heart doing a tribute to Led Zeppelin at the 2012 Kennedy Center Honors - "Stairway To Heaven." With their original late drummer's son playing drums as a surprise. Sorry, I took a path off into the weeds, but something to think about!
This is my favourite version ever. It's fantastic.!!! I play it over and over again. Brilliant.!!❤ I get shivers every time I hear it. Wait till he gets to the chorus. Sheer WOW.!!! ENJOY. BE AMAZED! Listen to the words now it will take you to a whole new meaning .. xxx It's stunning. Love it.!❤️❤️❤️
I grew up with the original of this song in the 60s & loved it then, but this, this takes it to another level entirely & even Paul Simon said its the best he's ever heard & boy is he right. Davids voice is incedible, he could sing anything from heavy metal to opera & do a fantastic job. This is a joy to listen to no matter what kind of music you like.😂😊
I’m a 74 year old grandma who discovered this video on UA-cam at the beginning of COVID lockdown in 2020. I still own the original S and G vinyl from the 60s. This video was released in 2015. I’ve since become a huge fan of everything Disturbed, even the heavier songs, like their first big hit in the 90s, Down with the Sickness. The lead singer David Draiman joined the band in 1995. He was originally a trained Jewish Cantor, as his father and grandfather before him, hence the pure tone of his voice. Even though he’s had piercings, he’s never had tattoos, so as not to offend his family when he’s with them. The band has heavy metal and ballad rock songs. They have a new album out now where Ann Wilson of Heart sings with Draiman. One of my favorites is the video of Disturbed’s cover of band Geneses Land of Confusion. After Paul Simon saw the band’s performance of Sound of Silence on Conan’s show in 2016, he let the band know that they now owned the song. Draiman was actually was ill with a high fever that’s why he’s sitting down.
This cover is probably one of the BEST covers ever made of any song I know in my opinion. The original is good, but this version is spell-binding and gives me chills every single time, no matter how many times I hear it. Hearing people cover this version of the song on shows like 'The Voice' too is also so special - it really conveys so much depth and power that I think the original version doesn't quite have. It's SO so so good!!
@@nickforell1 i recommend Tara Bloch-Vere on The Voice Norway last year! I think that was the first time I had heard a woman cover the Disturbed version of the song, and it was really quite breathtaking!!
I usually listen to death core more, but I have a soft spot for Disturbed. David Draiman is simply amazing. Their song The Light makes me cry and smile at the same time. ❤
Hey Nick, my guy, welcome to the wonderful insanity of David Dramund. I've heard people say Simon and Garfunkels version is a whispered warning, and disturbed's version is a call to arms. I love this song. I loved your reaction as always. Love from Cali ❤️.
SO much fun watching your mouth fall open in astonishment! I knew what was coming and wondered if you would be moved to tears, as I was the first time I heard this masterpiece. Stunning vocals, stunning orchestration...I never get tired of hearing it, especially when watching you reviewers discovering it for the first time! Thank you for your appreciation, and for your wonderful reaction...it was delicious!
My sister told me a few years ago to watch this video. I really didn't want to because I knew Disturbed was a very heavy metal band. Well, I did watch it and I can't watch it enough. It gives me chills every time I watch this. Please listen to Pentatonix's version of this. It is wonderful! Also, Disturbed has a song called Hold on to Memories. It is so good. It is on the softer side, not metal! Great reaction...
I have been listening to this song for a while now, but because I do have (in all seriousness) major issues with short term memory loss made worse by wayyyyyy too many falls with strikes to the head, I cannot for the life of me tell you what made me include this in my playlist collection. Disturbed is not my usual fare (but that natural growl - hoo boy!!). Is it because this singer reminds me of Dave Bautista? Possibly, but I highly doubt it. Sometimes you just are lucky to experience that phenomena of "I had no idea!" and then your eyes are open and those tiny hairs on your arms and ears stand at attention, as we saw with YOU, Nick. So-and-so may have written and originally performed a certain piece of music, but now you know who it really belongs to (or who is talented and famous and delightful, but you know in your gut their version of the song is not the one for the ages and they find something else). If you want to keep that suggestion "light", go look at 2Cellos version of AC/DC's "Thunderstruck", or Tina Guo's acoustic and electric cello work for Wonder Woman. And those don't even have lyrics, it's conveyed visually and instrumentally. Now y'all, go forth and enjoy!
Loved the reaction to this Epic version by Disturbed, simply best I have ever heard, and you are right, nothing like Simon and Garfunkel at all. David is a classically trained Cantor and recently battled severe addition and depression but is recovering now. Hard to not recognize is distinct voice...been a fan of Disturbed a long time now. Cheers 🤩🤩🤩🤩
Great reaction, thank you so much! I am always so moved, to tears, when I listen to this rendition by Disturbed. I feel that the impact is even much heavier when you know and love the original song by SaG (like me, and "old one" too 😉). This is just so powerful - it touches me deeply and makes me speechless. I would love Dimash to sing a great metal song... The power these guys have... Much love, see you!
Your face said it all: the smile in the beginning. the sadness, the jaw dropping moments. This version by Disturbed is my favorite one as it expresses in a masterful way my own interpretation of this song. Simon and Garfunkel´s original is light and playful and as per their own acknowledgement they didn´t go for a deeply thoughtful social criticism at all. If you listen to the a capella version by Pentatotix, you will hear a message witch is pointing more towards hope. But damn! Disturbued is sending a warning out to the world to hear and they are right. Btw: best way to listen to it, is at night, on full blast, driving on an almost empty German Autobahn. luckily I do live in Germany 😉 Thanks for your reaction.
I don't know if you read all your comments, but I thought I'd share my thoughts. I've been a superfan of Queen and Freddie Mercury for the better part of 25 years. I still get goosebumps when Freddie sings Live Aid, Somebody to Love, Innuendo and Bohemian Rhapsody to name a few. Listening the first time only happens once, but reaction videos allows me to watch other people experience it for the first time. It's the best we can do to hear these songs again 'for the first time.' Because the way Freddie Mercury sang: melody, improv, the ability to sing two notes at the same time and his charismatic energy gives the listener, in Freddie's own words, a touch of the Heavens (not Rami Malek: Freddie did say this once in an interview). Anyway, why do I mention this? Because only two recording artist groups have EVER given me goosebumps: Freddie & Queen, and David & Disturbed in THIS song. It's really THAT good. Thanks for the wonderful reaction!!!
Great reaction Nick. Ive always loved Disturbed. Thru the years dealing with my depression, suicidal ideation & self-isolation, music has become so important in my life. Other than my 2 cats, its what keeps me going. 1 of the songs that have made a big impact is Disturbed's, Reason to Fight, live version. Its very, very powerful & so many people need to hear it. Thanks!❤
It's truly amazing how a song can take on such a completely different meaning when sung by someone other than the original singer. As a 60's teenager, I was immersed in S&G and their folk version and I loved it then. Now I love this version as a grandma of another era. He definitely gave it a different life. It touches my heart so differently now. And, I loved your reaction to it. Thank you. BTW - Dan Vasc does a cover of Disturbed's version. It's definitely a need to check out. ♥
I'm not usually a proponent of live versions, but you'll want to check out the performance of this song on the Conan show. You won't believe it. Very much enjoyed your reaction. Nice dropping in on you!
OMFG! I have chills, even my chills have chills! I've heard this version many times before and the lyrics in this version HIT different this song is about depression and thoughts of ending your own life. I tried to listen to the original but I couldn't get through it cause this version is so much better to me. I'm not hating on the original it's a good song from what I've heard of it, but I just think that this version is better in my opinion.
The original rendition was created during the 60’sand was a much gentler time and sung gently. This is a current rendition and sung with grit and anger. It is reflective of our times. It is the best rendition of this song I have ever heard!
I never heard of Disturbed but was scrolling threw UA-cam and saw the title of the video, I'm 70 so I know this song well, let me tell you, by the end of Disturbs version I was hooked, I watch this video quite often and have the song on my phone, I also went back and listened to Simon and Garfunkels original version and ohmy what a difference, Disturbed knew what they were doing with this rendition l, Bravo!! ❤
This is a fantastic rendition of this song. I'm a 70 yr old Granma and grew up with the original. I thought it could not been done better. I much prefer this
This cover just absolutely slays me every time. Again, I grew up with the original, and kind of new it was a protest song...but this version just makes it so much more visceral. They did a similar thing with their cover of Land Of Confusion, I HIGHLY recommend it, especially since you're likely familiar with the original Genesis/Phil Collins version and its anti-war message. The Distrubed version brings it into the modern era in powerful ways.
Years ago, I was driving down the road when this song came on the radio. I had heard it many times by Simon and Garfunkel. But the style I was hearing in the radio wasn't exactly the style of music I listened to. Anyway, I let it play. The song was so powerful that I had to pull over alongside the road, and I was so overwhelmed the song took on new meaning to me. I've listened to this version many, many times, and it still grabs me up!
I have never heard of Disturbed before now, but I think I have a new favorite now. This is so intense and powerful. That VOICE!
I had a little 😢 in eyes
yep. me too. I liked S&G's version but i never really got it. With this, it just blew me away. And now I get what I think Paul Simon was after, and it's so much more exciting. Yep, tears every time. (78)
I’m 66 and I agree with you
Really? From the UK ,
The first time I listened to this cover I cried I am 79 years old I felt so sad for humanity we have got so much so wrong. The passion this man found within himself to sing like this touched my soul.

Paul Simon said that Disturbed owns this song now and I’ve seen it live and it gives you goosebumps every time.
That's nice. It's good to see artists that understand and support other artists.
My favourite interpretation is that the original version by Simon & Garfunkel is a warning, while the Disturbed version is a bitter lament that the original warning went unheeded.
It's amazing how the same lyrics can take on such different meanings to people based entirely on how they're performed.
Love that interpretation
Their original video (which this is NOT) was supposed to have been described by Paul Simon as The rage that the warning was not heeded.
And there's the 3rd version by Jonathan Young, which takes things even further
@@PavelBarbanegra Oh yeah, Jonathan can express rage like very few are capable of.
Recently they've broken the usual in Evolution. There are some great slow songs inside. I particularly like "Already Gone "
@@carolmayhardie I really liked Uninvited Guest! I do have all their albums, because apparently I'm a weirdo who still buys albums instead of just adding the singles to a Spotify playlist. There's also a slower song entitled _Don't Tell Me_ on their latest album, _Divisive,_ from November of last year.
just beautiful!!
Disturbed is the very best! I'm 73 and he made me cry! It is beautiful!!!❤️🙏🕊
At 72 here - couldn’t agree more. Beautiful
Fab fab fab😢😅
Thanks.
I am 80 and cried when I heard it first - at night I listen to it before going to bed - all I can say is his voice is phenomenal ❤
The live on Conan version is even better. I consider it one of the best live music performances of all time.
Oh, didn't realize there were two! Need to check that out
@@nickforell1 Definitely, it's breathtaking. And Dave was very sick that day!
@@nickforell1💯live on conan. He did it when he was sick as a dog too
agree :)
❤
Pure talent. The danger of a song being iconic is that the words are so familiar that we forget their meanings, unless someone brilliant presents it to us in a new way. So glad you covered Disturbed's version. Thanks Nick.
Yes mama, it’s a prime example of nodding along with the music and not interpreting the lyrics. I had done that my whole life with this song!
I love both versions and am now a big Disturbed fan.
now you need to listen to Pentatonix doing this song
Very relevant point. Once we hear a song over & over like you say , sometimes the meaning dissolves. My favourite cover hands down 🔥
His voice is made for this song.
I’m a “ Reardon” too 👍💕
Wär toll, wenn das dumme Gesicht des Moderators nicht da wär!!
I love watching people experience this gift of a performance. I get goosebumps every single time. ❤
Me too.
Same here on the goosebumps
Same for me. I love watching the reactions and never get tired of hearing it. I get goosbumps and tears every time. I may have gotten goosebumps when S & G sang it, but did not get the meaning of the words like I do when David Draiman ... I can't say "sings it" it is much more than singing or even preforming.... ❤❤
@@jaxinevolner8003I think, given the depths of David's expressive passion here, emoting would be an appropriate and accurate fit. 😉
I'm 62 years old. I heard the original by Simon & Garfunkel a million times growing up. This version never fails to reduce me to tears.
Right?!?! This is one of the most amazing versions of songs I’ve ever heard. Goosebumps and tears every time
I’m so so impressed
most covers of this song stops here! but there are one cover that is almost as good.. that will be pudles the clown.. he sings it with pasion!
Henk Poort on Beste Zangers does it better
@@Boulevard1800gonna have to respectfully disagree. Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt originally by Trent Reznor Nine Inch Nails is far and away the best cover ever.
I love Paul Simon, especially for acknowledging that the Disturbed version is superior.
The first time I heard this version it left me an emotional wreck. David Drayman's voice is beyond amazing!
I came across this song one night after my husband of 50 yrs passed away. I played it so much whenever i couldnt take another step, he made me feel like his arms were wrapped around me and i wasnt afraid to try to face another day. I shiver each time i here his voice!
Sorry to hear about your loss. May I suggest to listen to Disturbed's "Hold on to Memories" and "A Reason to fight"? God bless you.
😢🙏❤
I am gobsmacked every time I hear that version. David, the lead singer for Disturbed, is a classically trained singer, so not only can he scream music, he can sing it with all the pathos this song needs. Check out the live version from when they were on Jimmy Kimmel. It is also very powerful. I also read that Paul Simon put this video on his webpage, which he never has done before. He called David and told him that the song belonged to him. I get goosebumps every time.
Classy Paul move
The live version was on Conan...
My uncle is a grammy award winning producer & paul Simon is my cousins godfather. So believe me when I say, this rendition is 100% Paul Simon approved! He was floored
Who wouldn't be? But I'm delighted that this rendition got Paul Simon's blessing.
WOW! What an honor!!!❤ I took love Simon and Garfunkel but this cover is amazing
Goose bumps...every time. I always say Paul wrote this as a warning and David delivers the rebuke for not listening to the warning. David's lifelong vocal training really shines here.
Spot on.
It’s ironic that the side that warned about the silence is now the one that demands it.
@@cosette999 ???
@@cosette999 Yeah, the late 70's and 80's "ME" generation really did a number on my generation. There still a lot of us that still believe in equality for all, support for the vulnerable members of society, support for the things that upraise humanity (the arts, the environment, education). It's just our voices aren't loud enough anymore to rise above those who don't.
Yeah, i've seen this same post by others on the multitude of reaction videos out there. Nice try though.
Today, on things that never happened.
@@hectorsmommy1717It actually did happen, but what Paul Simon actually said is that he put their version on his playlist and that he wanted to sing the song more like David Draiman did, but he was told no by the record company because he was a folk singer.
He never said that it was now Disturbeds song
😢 Wow!
he did not said that man.
We live in a time where people bow over the neon god (cell phone) so they can talk without speaking (constant texting.) The song was prophetic. Disturbed's version makes you realize that.
Amen! People don't talk any more but on their phones!
The neon god in Paul Simon's version is the television.
True, true true. Damn what voice
Am I i the only person hearing this that feels the urge to get out of bed and go look for people to talk to. To listen too. To share encouragement with. I don’t think I’ve ever hear a song with a stronger message.
I have total different take on this song and yes it’s political
David ROCKED this song... The first time I heard it every hair on my arms were up and I was mezmorized by the end of the song. Without a shadow of a doubt THE VERY BEST MAKEOVER OF A SONG IN HISTORY! Never before have I seen so much emotion in a song... And if you like the song go hear him in concert.... worth every penny that ticket cost you.... even if just for this song. He is a MUSICAL GENIUS. This is without a doubt my very favorite song ever..... and I was a DJ for 18 years.
100 agree❤
Wow, Disturbed really captured the Essence of this song, it grabbed my heart, whereas the original version, did not have the same reaction. The power of his voice" The Neon God they Made" that was Supernatural, I felt " The Creator of the Universe" blast through his Voice, Amazing!
Right
"Holy Shit" is the correct, perfect, appropriate, response to this song the entire way through. I have listened to this version more than the original at this point (and I'm an old). It NEVER fails to hit me and make me feel. Physically, emotionally, mentally. It is timeless. David Draiman is a generational talent. His resonance, range, and pure magic hits every single nerve in me. I love it so much.
I agree with ALL you say. (another "old" person here)
Over 50 here, and long-time Simon and Garrfunkel fan...
Yep
I will be 80 in October and have fallen down the Disturbed well. I have enjoyed most kinds of music over the years including metal, but kind of got away from catching the new stuff...this cover brought me to Disturbed and it has been love at first listen. I'll be attending my first rock concert to celebrate becoming an octogenarian.
This may be a bit controversial, but I think this version might actually be better than the original. So powerful. Starts softs and builds to an incredible crescendo Then back to soft at the end. Pure genius, absolute perfection! Loved watching your reaction!
Yes, to me the original is like cotton candy, no substance. This version, you hear and feel the words.
didnt Simon of Simon & Garfunkel not say it was better than theirs?
I agree! This is the best cover ever done! So much better than the original. Even Paul Simon loved it!
I totally agree best cover I’ve ever heard n I love Simon n Garfunkel this old song sounds so fresh with the rock voice side to it well done disturbed
@@weybye91Paul Simon definitely did not say it was better.
Thank you Connie!
This is truly my favorite version of this song...Disturbed did an amazing job on this song.
So true ❤❤❤
If you want to get a real appreciation for how strong his voice is watch the Live version on the Conan show. Great job. Keep it up
I have always loved Simon and Garfunkel sing this, but THIS cover? Goosebumps. Love David Draiman’s version. Disturbed rocks!
I was a teenager in the 60's when S and G released this song. I loved it,and then a few years ago,my brother sent me this version..bloody hell!! I cried!! It is now the song I play over and over in my car,as I sing loudly and badly. This song was written for HIS voice, love it.
Very emotional rendering of this song. His voice is magnetizing!
It really is a magnificent reimagining of the song. The video visuals are superb, but David Dremman's voice - never fails to move me
David Draiman......
Best reaction ever! I too had chills all over the entire song!
Phenomenal magical voice!
The conan live version is one of the best versions of any song I've ever heard. It is quickly becoming one of my favorites of all time.
This song will never be the same after you listen to this version...💯❤️
David was trained as a cantor, and has great control over his voice, so that he can do that heavy metal growl without damaging his vocal cords. And this is a brilliant rendition of a great song.
My reaction was like yours...goosebumps, tears, complete resonance with the interpretation, message and delivery of the song. A spiritual experience
@@skilz8098 I enjoy Pentatonix. Did not realize they did a version. Will definitely check it out. Thanks.
I’ve always loved Disturbs version and I’m a fan of Simon and Garfunkel. But this version gives me goosebumps!
Hold on to memories ❤❤❤
Awesome and welcome to the family 🤘
Check out some other mainstream metal supreme excellence in Slipknot, Tool, and Metallica!
Their covers of Land of Confusion and Living after midnight are also really good
Same here! I'm a huge Disturbed fan now!!
Absolutely No one can Beat David Draiman He was the First to do this and I’ve Heard others But David is the N01 of this Song no one will Ever Forget this Song it was Amazing ❤️❤️❤️👍
This rendition gave me chills and tears. An amazing interpretation of the song and so powerful. Love his voice.
I completely agree. Such a great cover
I'm 61 and I absolutely love this version. It's incredible, really!!
S and G tried to warn us. Disturbed is pissed we didn't listen!
Yes. My mom introduced to the original and as a little kid I felt sadness and Distrbed's cover brings out that anger.
My mom grew up with the original. I played this version for her and she was completely blown away by it.
I've been a Disturbed fan for a long time, but even I was a bit apprehensive when they announced this cover. The first time I heard it (no video), I just melted into it. I thought, "this is what this song was always meant to be".
Every time I listen I cry it's amazing.i can listen over and over his voice is just unbelievable I love it ❤😢😊
David Draiman has an amazing voice, he really puts passion into the song, they also did Land of Confusion by Genesism the song Sound of Silence was written by Paul Simon on his own
It's so powerful!
So powerful! Simon & Garfunkel whispers the warning this man screams the warning!! A message worth listening to!!💞🎼
This is my favourite version ever.
This is a joy to listen to no matter what kind of music you like.😂😊
I get GOOSEBUMPS on my GOOSEBUMPS everytime! And I cry. 😢❤
Much Respect 74 yr old Grandma xx
I always get goosebumps when I listen to Disturbed sing this song! ❤
I absolutely believe this song is not just a warning, but prophetic and people seriously need to heed.
You are so incredibly correct in that statement.
Agree!!! God trying to get our attention❤
Best To Watch the Entire VIDEO Created by @DisTurbed ~Sound of Silence~ ❤
The lead singer is a former Cantor in a Synagogue. That’s why his voice hits deep into your heart. (IMO)
Ooh Hannah, I might have to check out the voice renditions. Such a poignant song
@@nickforell1 i recommend Tara Bloch-Vere on The Voice Norway last year! I think that was the first time I had heard a woman cover the Disturbed version of the song, and it was really quite breathtaking!!
I screamed when I saw you were reacting to this. It’s truly how it was made to be sung
Me too.
I usually listen to death core more, but I have a soft spot for Disturbed. David Draiman is simply amazing. Their song The Light makes me cry and smile at the same time. ❤
Like you I get goosebumps hearing this and I’ve heard this all of my 65 years. ❤❤
Brilliant absolutely loved this version
Hey Nick, my guy, welcome to the wonderful insanity of David Dramund. I've heard people say Simon and Garfunkels version is a whispered warning, and disturbed's version is a call to arms. I love this song. I loved your reaction as always. Love from Cali ❤️.
Thank you as always. David is out of this league
He actually had to retrain his voice for this song.
You hear it on TikTok a lot, I don’t think I’d ever tire of him singing this. Just Wow 5:57
Cheers 🤩🤩🤩🤩
Thank you as always! David is just something else. His voice brought out the true nature of this songs lyrics
Thank you Monika! I listened to this a few more times and definitely had some tears
Btw: best way to listen to it, is at night, on full blast, driving on an almost empty German Autobahn. luckily I do live in Germany 😉
Thanks for your reaction.
I saw someone somewhere say that Simon and Garfunkels song, was a warning, and Disturbeds rendition is the anger of that warning not heeded.
I love what he did with this song the power in his voice is amazing
Great reaction Nick. Ive always loved Disturbed. Thru the years dealing with my depression, suicidal ideation & self-isolation, music has become so important in my life. Other than my 2 cats, its what keeps me going. 1 of the songs that have made a big impact is Disturbed's,
Reason to Fight, live version.
Best version EVER is Distubed's live version with the sublime Myles Kennedy.
It was a pretty song, careful, gentle. David Draiman blows the doors off.
I have gooseflesh every single time I hear Disturbed singing this.❤❤❤❤
I never heard of Disturbed but was scrolling threw UA-cam and saw the title of the video, I'm 70 so I know this song well, let me tell you, by the end of Disturbs version I was hooked, I watch this video quite often and have the song on my phone, I also went back and listened to Simon and Garfunkels original version and ohmy what a difference, Disturbed knew what they were doing with this rendition l, Bravo!! ❤
This is a fantastic rendition of this song. I'm a 70 yr old Granma and grew up with the original. I thought it could not been done better. I much prefer this
His solo live version and his duet with myles Kennedy is absolutely amazing as well
This cover just absolutely slays me every time.
There’s something special here, can’t say I’ve witnessed it before
Years ago, I was driving down the road when this song came on the radio.
Pulling aside on the road speaks volumes. Id probably have done the same!
I watch this every time it hits my feed. Such a powerful song.
I never loved this song till I heard this version, and I cried. What an amazing voice
