HeroForge still doesn't have cyclops eye or gorgon hair, but some of their new additions (like the long overdue under- and over- chest armour options) make it quite attractive.
Didn't they remove a mindflayer/generally squiddy head option?
Like I made a mindflayer because my D&D character is an elder flayer, but one day the head option was gone and my save lost. Mysterious.
@@Vel_00 I think there were some copyright issues (or they tought there might be some in future) so they removed it.
What let's HeroForge down is just how low-poly their minis are. Everything else on their service is awesome, but in 2021 you shouldn't be able to see noticeable faceting on a 32mm scale mini
@@Vel_00 yeah, unfortunately they got legal consequences for being too similar to mindflayers and they were forced to remove the head,
customizing gives you the chance to express your ideas that might not be available on the market
Exactly, not everyone has the same ideas or wants or likes. Customizing is literally giving a personal touch to your own minis. It’s a pillar of the community!
I 3d printed my DnD group, a 10" scaled up painted versions of their DnD minis for christmas... I honestly think its the BEST present they have ever revieved! :)
I've been trying a long time to get into this hobby. But I wasn't interested in making Warhammer armies. I've been mostly engaged in the general form of painting miniatures. I've been watching TTT(as well as TTT roleplay)for a while now and I just had to try it out myself. Thanks to HeroForge I got to experience this beautiful hobby. I got my first 3 minis as a holiday gift. They are 3 main characters from a DnD session that I'm a part of. And it's the best gift that I've ever recieved. I've already painted one of them. I think I did a good job. I may not be a good painter, but I'm definitely a happy painter. Thanks to you guys! Thanks to your great job of being entertaining, educational, funny and full of joy. Thanks Dave, Jazza, Rob, Jen, Gareth (oh that smug beast) and everyone involved. Cheers to a happy new year!
Customization and adding your own flare to things is one of the things that i find most impressive! Having that creative vision, and then the skill to implement it is incredibly inspiring!
Personally I try to find a free base model, and then I edit it in blender to really fit the character such that it's completely unique.
free might be hard, but there are alot of very cheap base models out there for like 5 ish dollars

My hobby is watching you all pursue your hobbies. This channel is so much fun and I am totally addicted.
All my armies (BA successors, Tau and Necron) all have custom paint jobs, and whenever possible I kitbash a lot of the models. For me, making my army unique is stupidly important, although I can't say why. Although I will say that I started out painting Blood Angels, very badly, and wasn't until I started trying my own schemes that I saw a noticable improvement in my painting skills.
And wouldn't it be awesome for GW to do a miniature program like Hero Forge... ah, dreams...
It's amazing how tabletop rpg players are so similar to Lego MOCests. Creating a character for an existing established lore or a custom story. Or redesigning an existing character to be in a different style
Hey, an Imperial Guard Regiment based on Valkyria Chronicles sounds awesome anyplace you have shown these off?? I would love to get a look at them in Picture or Video Form? Otherwise I am personally all in for Customizations and in case of 40k I think you can very easily, due to the overall very open setting, fit Custom Armies into the Univers. Also great content keep up the good work and Happy New Year :)
I like to do both. I thoroughly enjoy making armies as identical to the lore as possible, even doing custom work to make some characters in books. But I also LOVE making my own stuff and customizing things... I made my own chapter killshots, a tech obsessed sister chapter of Iron Hands that focuses on LOTS of shooty shooty, everything has urban camo (something in hindsight I should have never done 😭), and lots of custom skull masks/heads and bionic parts.
Orks are a favorite as well, they demand making your own peices.
I will never play an official game though for the very stuck up idea said in this video, though I have armies that could enter, I'm good.

So happy to have Tabletop time back after years - been binging during the holiday break. Ready to work on some custom minis before school starts!
Love how this video shows up a few hours after I order a start collecting box and a bunch of paints because I had this idea for a custom paint scheme for a Tau army.
I'm currently working on an unique-looking Ultramarines army, taking the vanilla cover chapter and making them stand out mostly by playing up their Roman influences. Though not every unit will be customized to the same level, I made a squad of Bladeguard Veterans armed with Ultramarines-styled scutum and gladius, and helmets like those of the Victrix Guard.
Also, I have to see those Tekkadan Knights you spoke about.
I’m customising a space marine army using the rohirrim as inspiration (specifically theoden and eomer). I love their burgundy/maroon armour with gold and silver accents. I’m making them as a successor chapter to white scars as well (horse riders become bike riders… thought that was fun). I’ve spent ages trying to come up with my own custom paint scheme for a 40k army and I’m really happy with this one. Paint scheme is actually quite similar to jazza’s space bears. Not on purpose I promise 😀

The Sarumekh Dynasty: necrons whose tomb world fell closer in orbit to its star, bathing them in intense radiation as they slumbered and giving their necrodermis a golden iridescent sheen
The Sons of Slam: a custom chapter that's literally just one giant space jam reference
I would love to see Madaela and Mikey as minis as well. :O (Also Bacon and Eggs if you wanna make animals.)

I honestly don't think I'll have an army any time soon I want to focus building up my skills and learn a bit more kit bashing. Seeing custom armies are really cool to see and would love to see more of them in the future.

I love customising my mini's, be it altering the pose or switching out components. I try to keep my models in line with rules if there are any applicable ones, but I don't really play wargames anymore, so that's less of a worry to me as a cool looking mini. My father got me started on 1:72nd aircraft and I loved them, still do, but found the need for specificity in painting and decaling to be stifling. in 40k, my true love are the Dark Angels, but even in a lore and rules compliant force there is plenty of room for doing your own thing. Of course, I have plenty of custom chapter and xeno minis too. I think it's important to let the imagination run as much as to play by others rules... and whew! Do the new Eldar on the way look ready to destroy my savings and plans for 2022...
For the campaign I started running in December (D&D) I made NPC and SC minis with HeroForge. Always fun playing around with all the options. For monsters and generic people I usually take what I can get, not having a good enough 3D printer is a bit limiting.

Speaking of customizing minis, you should outfit a squad or two of bikes with lances attached to them as if they were horses.
I should maybe get some experience first, but I have an idea for a "army" that is basically a mash of survivors from different army's who have had to band together in order to survive some crazy force/army.
In my main hobby; airsoft, I enjoy creating my kits by the book. I usually do this using surplus/reproduction gear.

Mine may be both, I'm currently building up a tanith first and only ghosts force as a infentry heavy force of guardsmen scouting through the forest.
I like to do both, I've tried to use bits to create something entirely different that may not fit at all in what they had came from, But when it comes to something actually to be used in-game I try to make things fit the best I can.
Currently brainstorming a Traitor space marine chapter loosely based off of spacewolf marines as a base and bits from chapters like the fallen and other robed or other robed chapters, because I want to give them a sort of different tone than spacewolves.
I always wanted to make a Warhammer 40K what ifs armies, like What if Fulgrim stayed a loyalist and has three chapters? Or What if Ferrus Manus turned traitorous by using Necron Tech for him and his space marines?

A lot of the situation with custom armies also depends upon the game itself.
Fantasy and SciFi with some pulp can let you get away with a LOT, if you go into historicals, a custom army might end up with a LOT of people angry with you if they have connections to the normal version. Some historical games also tend to have the most insane players/painters in them...the people who go down to specific colors for buttons and colors and everything else
Literally just finished Valkyria Chronicles 4 - really keen to see the VC IG army, I'm trying to picture what that would look like and it sounds awesome.
I have salamander space marines but I change the heraldry a little like adding battlefield roles ( the arrows / upside down v's / x symbols) and changing the helmet color depending on rank (captains are orange sergeants are charcoal etc.)

I like a combination of both;
My Adeptus Mechanicus are an Explorator fleet who found an ancient music that contained malware that's scrambled a lot of their protocols. So, listening to vaporwave and synthwave, they're able to also corrupt and "appropriate" other forge worlds' forces, of whom they deploy down rapidly, aid, then disappear without fanfare. Though the result for the original Magos is better than if the assistants HADN'T helped... they have suffered notably more than combined-force calculations would imply.
A fun little non-serious army, but still purely mine.
For me custom is fun. I took a chaos rhino for my ultramarines army (it comes from hachette conquest),opened all doors (also fake sliding doors) made 2 techmarines (pilot/gunner) and now i'm putting on it a lot of accessories as a real tank (extra tracks,ammo boxes,fake lights,tow hooks,etc),and maybe a diy razorback turret. Custom is fun,why don't try?
I got a Warhammer starter kit for Christmas. I'm looking forward to starting in the hobby! Tabletop time has been a big inspiration and am eagerly awaiting more gameplay 😀
I try to make sure every model that comes across my painting table is changed at least a little from how it comes out of the box.
This includes about 150 Primaris marines, all of which are customized at least in some way.
I too am both! I love Bretonnians for their Beautiful Heraldry... and I just started Stormcast Eternals in AoS... but I am giving them ALL Bretonnian Heraldry!
I'm mostly waiting on an arachne species for heroforge (probably xl knowing them though)... would be 100% worth it for me tbh
I've always been a converter as hate the painting side and always want to make an army mine so in all systems there is something converted. I makesure that all converted models are clear as to what they are like my drone devilfish or my wraithguard looking characters for my Iyanden army. I also like to challange myself with converting within a system so models outside of GW I try to just use part from that company and design anything extra myself with only the occasional GW bit in there. You then get RP types games like Star Grave where your free to do what you want and thats when I go to town on converting.
I used to be firmly in the all custom camp, and am still mire there than not but I'd have a standard looking Dark Angels army that is nice
You guys should try making custom transfers for your own custom chapters
Something that I have done as a DM or assisting DM is actually drawn a picture of all of the players characters. Since we can't always get Minis
Customisation used to be so frowned upon and it’s disappointing that it still is. I was deeply into 40k in the late ‘90’s and very in to adding battle scars and additional modelling to my Dark Angel army. People would refuse to play me because the units weren’t canon in look even though I played them entirely from the book. These guys were the Dark Angels, they’d been through hell - they weren’t going to look pristine.
I’m glad the community is more creative now as it stopped me being involved in the gameplay aspect, I still love painting and modding.
Honestly I’m just having a good time sitting in front of heroforge creating cool people

I usually follow the box art, because everything about colours is just *really hard*

im planning a thousand sons killteam with a custom paint scheme right know. want the rubrics to wear red armor, a nod to magnus. but the tzaangors im gonna do with purple skin instead of the typical blue, because i think it will look cooler and i want to differentiate them from the rubrics because they arent loyal to magnus, but to tzeench. i have custom schemes for all my chosen forces. space wolves that arent sky blue lol and pinkrons (necrons with pink energy effects). the way i see it, i bought the armies and i spent the time painting them. gw doesnt get to tell me how to paint my stuff. obviously im one of the "paint it my way" types. my neighbor and i have been looking into starting star wars legion too. really want to do a clone force, and am seriously considering doing an accurate scheme. i think you should paint your stuff the way that makes you happy, whether thats cannon accurate or a custom look.
A huge percentage of my minis are converted or otherwise customized. They're your toys and you should make them exactly how you want them, regardless of canonic lore.

I think if you intend on using your minis for a game then the first priority should be to keep things clearly readable. I love making custom minis for my skitarii but I make sure to always use parts that ether look like the thing they are supposed to represent or (if my wallet allows it Q_Q) use GW parts to bash the new minis from. I think using recognizable weapons and elements from the setting you're playing in is very important both for simple game play but also for the immersion which at least to me is a large part of the game.
The models you can go wild with are the commanders and HQ units as they usually stand alone meaning your opponent wont have to keep it apart form another blob of dudes, and nothing screams "my army" like making a custom leader for it

I like putting my own spin on ideas, or making something completely new.
My feet are in both pools, especially for custom stuff, I have cannon armies but just as many non cannon.

Literally all of my custom harlequin models end up killing themselves somehow. But games workshop doesn't like giving new harlequin models so I made a couple new ones of my own, one like a squigg exploder that juggles nades, one that's a sky waver with a webway warp gate strapped onto the back of it that on a stratagem launches itself forward, damaging any models in its path but ends up crashing itself and dying.
I'm more than willing to not bring em or not run em but there's like 8 official models for harlequin and they're all a bit hindered and costly.
Miniature customization is the peak of the medium. The ability to make something anyone can have something of your own makes it so much better. Whether it's a paint scheme, a kit bash, some custom modeling, whatever. By the numbers is just a lack of imagination to me. I'm a bit of a story teller though, and I never want to be in a situation (using warhammer 40k, my table top game as an example) where my spess mareen is killing a spess mareen that look just like me but is evil because they are my enemy. that just me though.
Custom. Definetely, custom. Then act surprised that other 'custom' projects look/feel similar to my own. Then run the existential gauntlet brought upon by the realization that no matter how much 'custom' you think you've made something, it's still pretty much 'standard' once you've queried enough people. :)

HeroForge is ok. The models sometimes don't come out as well as when you make them, but they are still quite good
