    When you were doing the dragonfly wings and asked for ideas on how to do it with more transparency, I was thinking a lot about how nail polish flowers are made! Basically, nail polish is viscous enough that it will create a membrane if you spread it over a gap the right way, and then you can let it dry that way. The common craft is to make cute little transparent flowers by making loops of wire as a frame, and then using the nail polish to fill it in to create the petals. I believe you can also do the same thing with certain kinds of glue? The result is just as transparent as whichever nail polish you use, and there's tons of fun iridescent polish colours as well so you might even be able to skip the step of painting it afterwards? That mesh you used for the dragonfly wings would probably work really well with that technique.

      Fairy film also works well for this! Although it wouldn’t be as thin as nail polish/glue

    You could just "paint" it with mod podge. It dries into a clear rubbery material. Just put it on baking paper so it's easy to pick up. I made fairy wings for a skeleton with this method

    There’s this thing called fairy or unicorn film, it’s transparent and perfect (with a little wire) for insect or bug like wigs. The best example I can think of is Dollightful, she uses it quite a few times especially her fairies Iggy (the footage was lost for Iggy so it’s most just pictures) and her older sister Amanita (which has a full tutorial on how to actually make the wings). Hope it helps

  • @gergotothmihaly2307
    @gergotothmihaly2307 3 роки тому +6

    For the wings: you could try to dunk that mesh into water effect, that would dry as a clear 'film', then paint it with glazes/inks. I've used this technique for stained glass windows and the result was really good.

    At this sort of scale, I’d recommend gluing unravelled red sewing thread to the eyeball for fine veins. Automatically generates convincingly quasi-randomised placement as the thread squirms on application and has a much more reliably consistent line weight than freehanding. This is actually how medical prosthetics artists apply veins to glass eyes (or at least it was circa 2007; I’ve not read up on the field recently)

  • @Droemar
    @Droemar 3 роки тому +4

    For the dragonfly wings: unicorn skin? I've seen a lot of doll customizers use wire and a lighter to melt the skin around the frame and get some nice translucent insect wings.

    So for the transparent wings on the mesh, you could just use a thick glue. It will stay in the mesh long enough to harden and create this pretty transpaerent layer.

    If you were to dip those wings in neat PVA glue it would form webs and dry semi clear. Ive used it for 15mm Jeep windows for WW2 willies jeeps. Then you can paint any colour over the top. Or wash it even. I made windscreen whiper marks. Its pretty durable.

  • @JCPRuckus
    @JCPRuckus 3 роки тому

    So my sister used to make craft-style jewelry, and I seem to remember her dripping clear nail polish onto water to get a mostly transparent but iridescent "skin". Basically she was making an oil slick that that would harden, so you could take it off of the top of the water. If you could do that over a large enough surface, that would probably look very much like dragonfly wings.

  • @scottluther109
    @scottluther109 3 роки тому

    So creepy! I made fairy wings for Tatle & Tael from Majora’s Mask using two layers of clear packing tape. Then painted the veins with white acrylic paint. The shimmery look was done with a pearl alcohol ink, to keep the transparent look. They turned out awesome, only thing I’d maybe change would be add a thin piece of floral wire around it or just the top for some structure.

    I really like the insect wings. I think they are transparent enough for this application. I wonder if a different glue could change the effect to greater transparency. Maybe the stuff used to get wallpaper to stick. I remember using that one in kindergarten to create lanterns

    For the wings to help return that iridescent reflective-ness, maybe try applying a layer of cellophane or a similar thin clear plastic kinda like what comes on the outside of some convenience type goods. Also yes we wacky Americans make a pretty big deal out of Halloween.

    I'm terribly late for the party, i know. And i can't be bothered to read through all the comments to find out if your question concerning the transparency of the insect wings was addressed in some way. Yea i'm a terrible person.
    Well anyway, back in the day i used standard hobby glue. The transparent stuff.^^
    No idea what products there are in Australia but in Germany there's _Uhu_ . You can thin it as much as you need and it remains transparent.
    edit: Having watched the entire vid, this is hands down one of the coolest things you've created so far. Absolutely on point.
