This one really pulled at the heartstrings .. a genuine feel-good moment. It was a great series .. made great by the actors .. fantastic casting .. & best casting of all was the wonderful George Reeves. GR had the abiity to reach out & touch you .. always felt like you wanted to take him home for dinner, port & cigars.
The Man of Steel could break through walls, and yet be so gentle. What a class man!! George Reeves is Superman, in many ways. Thanks for being there and setting examples for us!
Realize too that George is lying prone on the "flying table" and supporting the child's weight with just his arms and shoulders...no easy feat in itself!
Here was one little girl who knew Superman’s secret. He couldn’t fly. I used to watch this series all the time as a young boy. I remember this episode very well. George Reeves was very athletic and his takeoffs and landings as Superman were very realistic. The takeoff was often done on a springboard and for landings he sometimes would jump off of the second or third step of a ladder and into the camera’s frame to give the appearance of a landing, while trying to keep his balance. Not easy to do.
So few people realize that this episode was shot only a few years before the polio vaccine-- there were, unfortunately, many young girls like this one, at home watching this episode-- many of whom would have given their eye teeth to have met George Reeves, even if they couldn't be flown a thousand feet over Metropolis by Superman. Sure the ending is schmaltzy, but it's GOOD-schmaltzy, and never fails to touch me.
Greatest theme music ever! Remember too, these were the baby boomers after the war that Superman was most affecting... Young children who were so impressionable and wanted to believe. I was one of them. Oh only to go back to that America, where people truly respected one another. BTW, don't drop that football big boy! Maybe she couldn't walk. But on this day she could surely fly!!
One of my top 5 fav episodes. Haven't seen this until now. Gracious thanks David Turner, for helping me relive a so special, positive memory from my childhood
It´s the first time that I see this scene I was a fan of the show. in the early 70´s The little girl is so very nice... George, (ouch sorry Mr Kent!) YOU WILL ALWAYS BE IN MY HEART MAYBE YOU STAY WITH MARTHA & JONAS KENT IN HEAVEN NOW!!!! THANX FOR POSTIN´ FROM BS AS ARGENTINA WITH ALL MY LOVE..............
There's another shot of those extras(again playing the citizens of"Metropolis")but..this time..instead of looking up in awe or in shock..they're looking up at"Superman"(George)and Ms.Ishadown..with smiles on their faces.
he took his responsibilities playing a role model and superman seriously-he really cared about what the impact of the caped crusader meant to minors and people--suicide?--dont think so...you cant even be safe in ones home..
I watched Superman re-runs in the early 1970s...before cable tv. George Reeves was good..but I enjoyed when when Superman The Movie came out too, with Christopher Reeve.
@@steevrawjers They both played the Man of Steel as a man with a super-size heart. I have to wonder how much of George Reeves portrayal influenced Chris Reeves.
Sadly funny how things have changed. Back then, characters like Superman were considered heroes. Today, with some people, this Barefoot bandit punk, Colton Harris-Moore wears the title. Well, not with me!
I always loved George Reeves' portrayal of Superman. I like the newer ones too, but it's gotten darker. The original tv series was fun the whole family could watch.
@RJBFIRECHIEF1 I've never met Noel Neil. I always wanted to meet her and/or Jack Larsen. I'm glad that you had that chance to meet her. It doesn't surprise me when you say that Isa's kiss on George's cheek was not scripted. I've always thought this scene between them was less acting and more George and his "leading lady" actually liking each other and enjoying the scene. I agree with you, and many others. I don't believe took his own life either,.
I Loved Geeorge Reeves, and Superman, Show. It isTrue, Every Girls Dream Man! Boy, Did I have a Crush on Him!!! Just looking at him now in these videos, My type of Guy!!! Miss Him!!! God Bless George, don't believe He committed Suicide. Never! I could watch him Forever!!! This was My Favorite Show, as a Little Girl. I saved the Videos, to my Laptop. Going to buy some DVD's of Superman, George, soon. They just don't make them like this anymore!!! GIGI610
@Aquaman1054 Outstanding! I met Noel Neil and and to even think he did himself in is outrageous! The smiles says it all on both, and the Kiss was not scripted!
Like many TV shows at the time and right after, it used a number of familiar libary music pieces..the sources would include MuTel and Langlois Filmmusic..
When Superman play costumes were sold in stores in this period (at least), they came with a warning label (and a one-page comic story to emphasize it): "This Costume Will Not Make You Fly. Only Superman Can Fly."
In the "Adventures of Superman" episode "The Unlucky Number", Superman tells a young boy that "Nobody can do the things that Superman does, and that especially goes for flying".
This scene is not from "The Birthday Letter"! It is from "Around the World", which has a similar plot line, only difference, the little girl was formerly blind & in the " Letter", she was cripple!

OMG I am a 60 year old man and just watching this little scene is making me cry like a baby.
You are not alone
Me too
I've always loved this scene. Look at the smiles on the faces of George and Isa. There's no acting there. They're really enjoying themselves.
I think the greatest scene in tv history.
I show this video to my grandchildren. They love it!! A great flying scene with the city of Metropolis below.
If this doesn’t move you nothing will...love you Superman!
Yes, it was a great loss. He truly was, a Super Man!
Realize too that George is lying prone on the "flying table" and supporting the child's weight with just his arms and shoulders...no easy feat in itself!
The Man of Steel, The Man with a heart!!
VERY touching scene, Superman's REAL strength was his COMPASSION [especially with children with disabilities; he helped a blind girl too]

Alright! I’m going to say it. George Reeves was my favorite Superman. That’s it! Others did a nice job. George IS Superman.

george reeves always seemed to be enjoying himself. at 0:12 he cracks the little girl up by pretending to drop her.

Greatest theme music ever!

My favorite ending by far!!!!!
Jay Rosen it’s truly touching..
Man, this scene kills me every time and releases the waterworks!
he took his responsibilities playing a role model and superman seriously-he really cared about what the impact of the caped crusader meant to minors and people--suicide?--dont think so...you cant even be safe in ones home..
the Caped Crusader was another name for Batman
People have each other killed in Hollywood all the time, By the way.
what a lucky sweet little girl up up and away
Still my favorite ending!!!!
You just don't know how right you are!
I watched Superman re-runs in the early 1970s...before cable tv. George Reeves was good..but I enjoyed when when Superman The Movie came out too, with Christopher Reeve.

Wonderful. and I see 7 people have no hearts.
Sadly funny how things have changed. Back then, characters like Superman were considered heroes. Today, with some people, this Barefoot bandit punk, Colton Harris-Moore wears the title. Well, not with me!
Liberal Media is always making Heroes out of Criminals.
I always loved George Reeves' portrayal of Superman. I like the newer ones too, but it's gotten darker. The original tv series was fun the whole family could watch.
Tyler Hoechlin does a nice job as Superman on Superman & Lois. He's the Superman we kind of need right now.
(Crying)this gives new meaning to the song title"Please Play Misty For Me"and I do become(Crying)Misty eyed..when I see this ending.
Why to fly. No check in, luggage handlers, no security, no waiting, no cancellations, great view.
wow amazing george reeves is superman
I trust everyone here has seen the movie Hollywoodland? It has a lot of soul, befitting its subject.
yes wonderful movie great film
He's just incredible.

Noel Neill lived in Tucson, AZ to the age 95 and passed July 3, 2016

Wow,what a genuine feeling those two had,i bet from time to time isa(girl s name),now a 78 woman,remember ,george reeves
Is that a birthday wish? Next thing a kid will get a wish like that for Christmas.
Mother leaves her cripple daughter home alone all day with the door unlocked knowing full well that she could get kidnapped by French spies.
@Aquaman1054 Outstanding! I met Noel Neil and and to even think he did himself in is outrageous!

I met Noel Neill in 1978 when she did her college tour. She even autographed a photo of herself for me. Very nice lady.
Like many TV shows at the time and right after, it used a number of familiar libary music pieces..the sources would include MuTel and Langlois Filmmusic..
@OaGuardian Yes. I'm pretty sure Mr. Reeves enjoyed the scene. One time he was concerned that capes were sold and worry a child would try to fly.
My mistake! In the picture, you can clearly see that the girl is wearing a brace, so this must have come from "The Letter"! Sorry about the mixup!
Isa Ashdown is the girl & still alive today I believe.
Gorgeous girl older than me
This scene is not from "The Birthday Letter"! It is from "Around the World", which has a similar plot line, only difference, the little girl was formerly blind & in the " Letter", she was cripple!
No it is from The Birthday Letter
Wonderful. Thanks
Ha.. Today Homeland Security would send up a Kryptonite loaded drone to take them out..
Episode remind me of Around the world with Superman
Is this girl still alive?
Fake he uses wires.😱
Visualize the little girl as our economy and Trump as “you know?”
Lex Luther? Darkseid?
Stop with the anti-Trump bullshit . Biden is more crooked than the Duvall's would ever think of being. .
That looked really gay....
No, your comment SOUNDED really gay.
