RENEW OLD CONCRETE: Cheap, Easy, DIY Project

- This video is how to refinish concrete to a like new condition. I use this method to help hide a crack or to cover a section of concrete that I am unable to remove all the paint. I start by Powerwashing the steps and remove as much paint as possible with a diamond grinder. Then, I use rapid set mortar mix to fill in any small voids. I also add some bonding adhesive to the water to help aid in the adhesion to the old concrete. Next, I dust off the surface from any left over debris from filling in the voids. Then, I mix Portland cement into a slurry mixture and apply a thin coat over the entire set of steps. Be careful not to apply the cement too thick or it will crack. Also be sure to keep the concrete wet that you are applying the Portland cement to in order to help the application process. I decided to applied 2 coats to the top of the steps because that was the area with the most damage.

RENEW OLD CONCRETE | 1 Year Review video MUST WATCH ua-cam.com/video/u8xvM4kGBaI/v-deo.html
I felt like putting a mask on you as I see the dust flying off the stairs. Good video by the way
I was thinking same
exactly - what I was looking for. I had this *idea* but had zero confidence in doing my steps. I didn't want to hire someone and was thinking to apply thin coat/ and your video is what I was looking for. Thank you !!!!!!
What a great idea! Paint the concrete on. I have some steps that need refurbishing. You have given me all I need to know in how to accomplish this. Thanks for the video.
Wow, i need to do exactly this type repair, on a very similar size porch we have. Thanks so much for the idea and video !
Check out review video. Think I made a mistake by not sealing it once dry.
So far I like the products in this video better ua-cam.com/video/DuZ8tYR3XbA/v-deo.html I drive my truck and trailer over this repair everyday and so far it’s holding up great. Good luck on your project.
I do some similar. I use 2 sand 1 cement, when doing my overlays. Sometimes I'll even throw in colored pigment, then seal it. Will last 10 plus years if prep work is done right. Very Nice Video Bro!! God Bless
I've only seen a few videos to repair and resurface porch steps and appearance and this one seems to be the best. I have no experience but the porch is from 1960 and it would be a accomplishment for me to make it look better.
I have watched a dozen videos. Your video gave me all the details I needed to take on the steps! Thank You for Sharing!
Have you already done the job? Unfortunately this has failed. Video coming soon on details. I also have a better method using different products.
RENEW OLD CONCRETE | 1 Year Review video ua-cam.com/video/u8xvM4kGBaI/v-deo.html
Man I know more youtube videos are out there that have craftsman in their trade that can do and teach well. But I have know idea what the hell they're talking about. You sir explained it perfectly for someone who has zero experience
Thanks for the positive comment. Sometimes they are rare.
Dust mask is a must for grinding!!
Good job Buddy, wish the management co I rent from would be so considerate. You will attract better renters who tap into the finer repairs, especially a front entrance. Kudos to you : D
I Thank god for your UA-cam channel! Appreciate the info 👌🏻🙌🏻
RENEW OLD CONCRETE | 1 Year Review video ua-cam.com/video/u8xvM4kGBaI/v-deo.html
Wow! Beautiful job! Great instruction, too
I see you got a helper just like mine always laying at my feet while I work
Haha yeah. My best buddy for 12 years. Unfortunately I had to put him down due to a bunch of skin and health issues his last year. Tucker was the best dog I’ve ever had. Do u have a boxer?
loved the dog having happy moment at min 1:33
The dog in the back yard cracks me up :0)
Easy enough to do. I think I will do that to the driveway leading into our garage.
So satisfying to watch. ☺️
Haha
This man will teach us a lot
Well done!
WOW! Great job! You are good!
Great video. Thanks!
Hopefully getting the video out soon on a new product that I’m trying out instead of Portland cement. Will attach video when I get it done.
Great vid. Thanks for sharing!
You can still see the dents, not very smooth at all, next time spray the surface with water & pour a little powder cement so it can bond with the old concrete then floated, the results will be amazing
Is there a quick, easy way to balance the color on an existing foundation? I clean headstones and I'm looking for a way to clean up splotchy concrete foundations of the headstones. Some of them just need a color balance. I want them to look as natural as possible. Would this powder cement that you mentioned, work for something like this?
Excellent video, thank you, Sir!
Straight acryl60 is even better than just diluted acrylic in your paint mix. Superior bond, reduced porosity, and durability. Sealing with silane is even better afterwards. I would also add to your video to make sure that the steps are wet cured after setting. Like stucco, I keep it moist for at least 24 hours.
Sorry, apply sealer after wet curing in case it was misleading.
Thanks for the tips. I greatly appreciate all the help. Check out this other video I recently did using different products: ua-cam.com/video/DuZ8tYR3XbA/v-deo.html
Seems to be holding up well. Thanks for watching.
Acryl 60 dont play..lol...best stuff ever..👍
Please put on a mask when your using a grinder or anything that generates dust.
You're young now, but believe me , it will catch up with you and you WILL be sorry.
Otherwise, very good video...
Thanks. Mask shortage during the time of this video. I typically wear an N-95 or respirator.
What happens if you don’t?
@@michaeljacksonlov14 sand has silica in it and at the microscopic level it looks like shards of glass if you breathe a lot of it it can damage your lungs.
Yes my grandpa was an old school painter back in the day who also did concrete repair. Throat cancer, died before his time never wore a mask. Came home with speckles of paint and concrete all over his face everyday. 😔
@@lyndacrockett5362 terribly sorry to hear that. While doing work that could eareversably harm you personal protective equipment should be used as needed to protect ones health.
LOOKS GOOD TO ME THANKS A LOT
Thanks for watching!
Another way you could probably have gone with this is to use your grinder on the horizontal/up faces to a CSP 2 (Concrete Surface Profile), and then choose a self-leveling epoxy, with traction/non-slip additive like aluminum oxide. That would have gotten you a lot closer to a smooth/mirror finish, and it potentially it would withstand water corrosion longer.
Nice job.
Nice job
Thanks for sharing! Just curious how did it hold up? Any issues with cracks or flaking?
The diamond cup you are using is for grinding, but if you have paints, adhesives, or other polymers on the surface, it's just going to smear them around--potentially deeper into the surface. There's another accessory you can use with the same rotary tool--it's called Diamabrush, and looks like row of putty knives set at a 45deg angle. There's a UA-cam video that shows a comparison between the two, and it's about 4-5X more effective in this scenario.
I just looked up the grinding wheel u are talking about. Very interesting. Thanks for the tips. I’m going to buy one and give it a shot on my next job.
@@handylandlord Good video! Just saying, dust mask are cheap lung protection as are foam or gel knee pads.
Excellent work 🤪
Great video. My stairs and porch was painted by previous owner, the paint is falling off, but could not be completely removed, do you think I can use your method to renew and cover it to make it looks more new? Thank you again!
thanks for sharing!
No problem. I would look into a product called Newcrete made by Rapid set.
Beautiful
Thanks buddy !
Nice respirator.
Excellent job.... I wish I could hire you...😊
Liked the video🙂
Would a bitumen paint work ? It might last longer. Or you could tile the top. Its only a small area. I have a large concrete driveway , so might try this. Have used cement water thick mix for deeper holes ( it lasts long time ) but dont know about small surface pitting
Wow! That’s looks so much better! Thanks for posting. Do you think the same products would work on previously painted concrete? I have enclosed patio, that I’ve been working on trying to get all the paint off to even out the floor. Could really use some advice. Thanks!!
Check out this video ua-cam.com/video/q85fXL3jatk/v-deo.html
This is my go to method for removing paint from concrete. It is labor intensive as you are grinding off a layer of concrete but it does yield good results.
Here is my most recent concrete video ua-cam.com/video/DuZ8tYR3XbA/v-deo.html
I prefer this method and products over the stuff I used in the past. Good luck on your project. Keep us updated on how it turns out.
This looks great. But it’s a small area. I have a large area in front of my garage. What else can I do not to get in my knees? Are there large brushes like yours to use like a rake and spread it
Can color be added to the mix?
Thx greetings from LA
will this fix etched concrete? how long will it last? i etched new concrete walkway with power washer accidentally. hopefully this will blend well with the rest of my concrete
good video dude. I accidently bought and open a gallon of that bonding agent. now i'm trying to find use for it.. and thanks for generous act of sharing. I found a good application. Can you do walls the same method? Sincerely: Mark
You sure can, I'm "painting" a block foundation & basement walls now & it's looking great.
Nice Job..... Out here in Phoenix trying to find basic Portland type I/II Cement is impossible on 7/2/22
Good. Open staircase best method prevention from heat and rain is fixing rough tiles immediately after construction. 😆😆😆😆
So all the paint has to be removed before resurfacing? No way around it? Lol, I would like to resurface my porch sometime but is covered in paint.
Interesting gnome close up 🙂
Nice job. Good ideas. The concrete guys who would make $500 on this job are critical. Us home owners trying to save a buck and get the old lady off are backs like it.
Maybe the old lady would be on your front instead of your back if you tried this yourself!
This is good haha
Check out this video. ua-cam.com/video/u8xvM4kGBaI/v-deo.html I've used Portland cement on several concrete repairs over the years but never combined with a rapid set product. Thanks for watching
Just an FYI have you ever heard of silica dust you really should’ve been wearing a mask when grinding the concrete and you might’ve been able to grid it wet.
Steps came out really nice.
easy, follow your steps.. I think i can do
This works… but I would look into rapid set new Crete.
Just curious, any reason why the second step (painting on the concrete layer) wouldn't be enough to fill the small pitting and even things out?
Excellent Video. Mike Hadduck 2.0!
Haha Thank you!
That is high praise, indeed, I love Mike!!!
Are you able to remove the over layer if you not satisfied with outcome
Pretty good job man. Looks good at finish line
Check out the 1 year review video: ua-cam.com/video/u8xvM4kGBaI/v-deo.html
No it doesn't. Idk what kinda shitty finishers you have in your town but it looks like garbage
Looks better but not great- missed filling in a lot of imperfections which shows in the final result. Personally I would have used a tint in the mix too.
Looks amazing. Thanks for this.I am doing a similar job soon and this helps.
So bonding agent and thin mixed hydrolic then??? Or just regular Quickset cement????
Nice safety boots lol!
Awesome job!
FYI RapidSet Mortar Mix is a hydraulic cement. It is a "High performance, eco-friendly hydraulic cement formulation"
Thanks for the info! Currently working on a video with RapidSet products. So far I am impressed.
No it's not ....Hydraulic cement is designed to plug leaks instantly in concrete and masonry and can be used above and below grade. It is high strength, quick setting also repels water
@@zeke112964 ah, well it says it is in its spec sheet
@@fortpatches it says its an ingredient in the mortar mix .Do you even know to make mortar instead of buying premixed bags?
You forgot to spray paint on it to seal it, preferably silane, but paint works. Your coat will have 5% strength because it only reacted for 5% strength. You want it to react completely for 100% strength, Paint over it with either clear coat or silane, or any cheapo paint, leave it there for a year.
I don't have any cracks or texture issues with my 12 by 12 concrete patio, it is just dirty. It has stains on it. I do not want to mess with a power washer because it's a pain in the butt and I don't want to use concrete paint because it will eventually paint and I'm lazy and don't want to do the prep work. It seems like there is no prep work for this over than lightly misting the existing concrete. Is this an ok idea to use this to just get rid of stains and make the concrete look refreshed and new again? I would think think it would be thick enough so that the stains would not be seen through it? I don't want prep work and this seems like a way to get away with not prepping anything. Thoughts? Your project looks fantastic!
I would spray it with bleach let it sit, scrub with a brush and rinse. See what it looks like after. If still not happy maybe a semi transparent concrete stain
Can you add color to this process? I need to fill in cracks on my terra cotta colored steps
Looks really good. Are you available for hire ? I doubt my results will look that good.
Thanks. Planning to try and do a smooth finish this summer on another patch of concrete. Unfortunately, I have more work than I know what to do with. Haha
Does it work where temperatures can get to -20?
I like it. How long will it last?
What kind of brush were you using? Nice video.
I picked this up at homedepot in the masonry department. I think it's called a masonry brush. Ive had it for years.
THANKS for your time bro but that's not how it's done but I give you the effort..
I just applied rapid "cement all" last month vertically seems like the first batch has cracks and is falling all off already. I wanted grey anyway. Wonder what I did wrong 😂
ANGIEB52 I would make sure your surface is clean and free of debris. Priming the concrete with a concrete bonding agent also is a good idea. For vertical cracks you could try hydraulic cement or quikrete patching compound. Sorry for delayed response, Monday is a crazy landlord day 😂. Keep us updated on how it turns out.
@@handylandlord Yeah I used the bonding agent, but I applied it to the wall per some other instructions. Maybe next time I will put it in the mix. The second batch hasn't started to come off, but its more spackled on. Like your brush technique, seems much better and easier. Think maybe I didnt wet it/cure it enough after and its pretty hot out.
ANGIEB52 The concrete you were applying the mortar mix to could have pulled all the moisture out of the mortar mix. Drying it too quickly causing it to crack and fall out. The brush works good but you can also use a sponge 🧽 like they use for grout/tile wet it and smooth out your edges when applying the mortar mix.
Sounds like the old concrete wasn't wet enough and your mortar mix was too wet.
Did you wet the concrete first? Suggest watching old school Mike Hadduck's youtube videos on concrete repairs.
Damn! I thought I was a cheap bastard.. At least buy some overlay & make it 1/4-1/2 in thick, could fill in those holes & missing side on step.
What is overlay? Will it last longer?
My mom's porch has a whole 3ft diameter area that cracked off from the center. A professional 'fixed' it and painted it 10 years ago & now the paint is peeling in that spot it's failing / sunken crumbling away there. So I think I should sand off all paint and smooth w a diamond wheel grinder he mentioned then use the same stuff mortar mix (liquidy) to build it up then resurface.
The porch is huge. 15x 7ft. I want to do it cheap but would love it 2 last another 10 years. 🤣. Any better ideas would be appreciated.
@@beverlycharles6534 Overlay is a concrete mix that has no rocks, mix water into it until it's a easy workable pliable but wont fall off the sides when you trowel it in. Just wash and clean surface before hand with hard bristle brush or lightly with wire brush, maybe brush on some of that concrete adhesive stuff for extra strength.
@@verndetta8315 Ok - sounds like what I need, & is worth the slightly higher price. 👍🤣 Thanks.

Best comment on this video yet.
What's the name of the big brown bag cement you yoused ??
Please wear a mask when bringing the concrete.
My understand on the use of concrete is it cant be less than 2” thick or it will crack or delaminate. This is applied very thin.
I have same hesitation. I am a licensed general contractor and property manager and that is not a method I would use on my clients concrete. It looks great when new and I am sure it will last at leat a year, maybe two but I think if that is in an area where it freezes and gets warm then over time it is going to crackle, blister, etc. I do not think that is a long lasting solution but excellent when new. There are commercial epoxy coatings that will last 10 years or so but that requires proper prep which is a lot of work and materials are expensive.
Does this work for driveways?
Awesome job ❤️
Concrete Advice!
so if you cant get all the paint off you can refinish over it with this?
Within reason I think you can refinish over it, but it depends on how much paint is on the surface. I would try to grind off as much as you can. Here is video I did on removing paint from my concrete patio. ua-cam.com/video/q85fXL3jatk/v-deo.html
Good luck on your project.
What is the texture of the resulting surface? Is it relatively smooth? I'm thinking about resurfacing and staining some interior concrete due to carpet tack holes from carpet.
In my opinion I would use something like hydraulic cement or some kind of epoxy to fill in the holes left by the tack strip nails. Not sure I would do this method over the entire floor, it’s kinda rough. Also I don’t think it would bond well to a smooth interior concrete finish.
@@handylandlord j🌚
You only filled in the holes on the top stoop and not the stairs. Also, why use a brush instead of a trowel to get a smooth finished surface?
How many properties do you have?
what’ the material all you used?
Need to wet that concrete before applying portland paint!
ua-cam.com/video/u8xvM4kGBaI/v-deo.html Yes I agree. I had some areas failed. After watching the video again I see that some areas dried out as I was working. Thanks for the tip
Nice job. How long would this sort of repair last and when it fails does it just wear away or flake off?
This is a video of a way you should not do the job
Hopefully getting the video out soon on a new product that I’m trying out instead of Portland cement. Will attach video when I get it done. Yes it does wear away.
@@serahandy8916 Haha
Patching concrete is just that!! A PATCH. It's not a forever fix. When it chips or flakes away you just come back and do it again. It always becomes a maintenance item.
@@terryhenry8243 this. If your just adding mortar and painting with Portland cement every 5 years, no one cares. It’s like $20 every 5 years. Even if it was every year it’s still dirt cheap.
Tommy Hilfiger was not a sponsor of the his video. Haha. Thanks for watching.
I was wondering...
Would this work on a driveway or would it crack?
My driveway roughly 30 x 20, I want to resurface
Was wondering if I can just do the step of applying concrete and the bond
Hopefully getting the video out soon on a new product that I’m trying out instead of Portland cement. Will attach video when I get it done.
You can apply a resurfacer product or an overlayment but that’s going to vary on different factors like the condition of your driveway slab. If it’s good without major cracking , sinking/settling you can do as I said, but if it’s in bad conditions I think it’s better and more beneficial for you to replace your slab
Breathing concrete dust can damage lungs if done too much.
Are you sure that thin layer of cement didn't crack in about 6 months from foot traffic?
In my experience, the Portland cement wears off, it normally doesn't chip or crack in the locations of foot traffic. Check out my one year review video: ua-cam.com/video/u8xvM4kGBaI/v-deo.html
how is it holding up? Just curious is any of the surface popping off or chipping?
Question is it going to crack up over time
Hopefully getting the video out soon on a new product that I’m trying out instead of Portland cement. Will attach video when I get it done. Yes it wears away.
Pure cement and polymer is just going to jump right off. The make structure mixes to do this. Fist couple good freezes its going to be a chipping mess
I really need to ask you a question - is there a way to message you? Great stuff- - - - -
Thanks. You can email me at handylandlord11@gmail.com
What temperature farenheit can we start painting at ?!?!
If just one video can answer that simple question, I think I'd fkn pass Out
Don’t need the acrylic adhesive. Data sheet and sds specifies this.
Now you need to paint the iron gate
You wasted money on the bonding agent you don't need all that added with rapid set just a clean wet surface and it will bond just as good .
Thanks for the tip. Hopefully getting the video out soon on a new product that I’m trying out instead of Portland cement. Will attach video when I get it done.
@@handylandlord Portland cement makes a great cheap bonding agent also .All you do is take portland and add lots of water and make it into the consistency of paint and wet the surface with a sprayer after cleaning of course and paint it on before applying cement .That works great as an old school bonding agent . But like i said really no need with rapid set but regular concrete bonding to old concrete works great .Good luck with your project and P..S Watch all of Mike Haduck video's he's a great cement guy .I learned a lot watching that guy .
@@davidboisen2132 Thanks for the info and tips.
Ya, you cant brush that stuff on, you need to trowel it, and give it another coat to make it smooth. Sorry it turned out that way, maybe the lighting makes it look worse than it is, but ouch, and lots of voids still left.
Nice job, how long does that last?
