Here in Queensland, Down Under I used Concrete Colour Systems around my pool, using the recommended non slip additive yet for some reason I managed to actually made the concrete quite slippery when wet.
Once you paint concrete you are stuck forever repainting it, far better to color the concrete or acid stain it, acid staining or adding color to the concrete mix is permanent. I cast a concrete sculpture panel for a local municipal pool building in 2014, adding dark red concrete color to the concrete it looks like red terracotta and it looks great today 6 years later
Westcoat is the best specialty coating system you can use out here on the West coast. Not sure if you have distribution in Maine. I use the 11-10 system for concrete / pool decks. It’s a 1-component water based epoxy sealer with an Acrylic topcoat. If you get a chance, check it out. Super easy to use and bullet proof.
Depends on when it was poured. Fairly new should only need a wash. But I do that on older floor where you know the dirt and grime are imbedded in the pores of the floor. Great point to bring up for home owners who plan to do it themselves.
Have you ever had efflorescence, I apply our Ceramic coating to concrete (we reflect 98% Energy and same light as well) but I always use a sealer before coating because concrete always emits from the ground up through the concrete and the sealer encapsulates anything from getting to the surface to effect our coating. Your video states you have good longevity with the paint, that’s awesome! Great job as well-attention to detail!I subscribed-one can never know enough.
Great video! Really helpful. Might have just saved me a lot of $ and agony. Thanks! Is there an easy way to smooth a concrete surface with a texture? Can this paint be used on a shower floor?

@@MikeDayConcrete: Hi Mike. Great Job sir. Any chance you could help resurface my deck and around the pool area in Palm Desert California? It gets really hot here. Upto 120 degrees! Is there a paint for the climate here?
Hi Mike, good video. I want to paint the concrete on my covered front porch. I would like to stencil a design over the base coat. Have you done a video for stenciling? Would I have to use special paint for the design and do a seal coat? What can I do to keep it from being slippery when done. Thanks!
Used the same product a few years back in my basement then it got some water entry from heavy spring rains and run off now the paint has flaked off in places but stuck fast in others and yes I prepped the floof 1st and etched it.
Thanks for this video. I wanted to get a paint that would be weather resistant and would last for years. I had never heard of the paints you recommended. Planning on painting my front concrete porch this summer. I like the grey color you used in this video.
Thanks Mike - I plan to do this when my home gets finishing being built which should be 1/2022 for my little covered patio area and I think I will do garage floor, too that is geared toward that specific flooring. Glad I found your vid! :-)
Stain is far more likely to adhere longer. Thin the stain about 20% for the first coat to get the best adhesion into the concrete. If the stain is acrylic (water based), apply the stain to damp concrete, just as you would if you were resurfacing with a portland cement.
I'm a painting contractor, and I've been using Conflex for years on concrete and block. I have jobs that I've done 20 years ago and they still look good. Prep is very important, as with any job, Conflex is not a cheap product.
I had a company lay out concrete for my sons half court outside and I’m going to paint. Do you recommend priming it first or if it’s nee concrete can I just do the two coats straight on?
I used Behr Porch and Patio Paint recently and really liked it! I prepped the concrete per directions and put the paint on with a concrete paint roller from Home Depot and it came out really nice. It was easy to put on and dried fast and only took one coat and you can get it in many different colors….good luck!
stretching with added water actualy keeps it from pealing added ceramic or clay can thicken the paint but the color goes further most think add in just keeps it from pealin just a couple re layering
Mr. Day, I must have missed it in the video, but did you have to acid wash this concrete? I heard that you pressure washed it and then blew off the dust the day after and then started to paint. I always understood that you must acid wash concrete for paint to properly adhere? Is this not the case with this newer paint technology sir? Thank you
Take my advise for what it's worth- some guy from the internet. You can paint concrete without acid washing. You need to make sure water soaks into the concrete and see that it has gotten porous. I painted mine one year +, after poured, and the paint came off quickly. Now, it is weathered and porous, so I am doing this exact paint/technique. Love SW paint!
I had a bad concrete job painted this color and I liked it at first. My yard is half concrete and half soil. All I can say is, you'll see lots of dirt with this light color and I have to do mine over in a brown. Also, this job looks great and the concrete base was solid but beware. This job was done on a concrete porch so it's more protected from sun and rain. If it flakes in a couple of years, there will be double the work to do. I don't understand why this area was painted. It was solid and at the most, may have needed a light pressure washing.
Love the videos! I have a question on maybe painting interior concrete floors. We have had to reseal our interior concrete floors twice now in the last two and a half years and it is already peeling again. What would we need to do to prep and then what would be the best way to seal or paint them for heavy foot traffic?
Need to tape down a square foot of cardboard to an area you want to paint. After 24hrs check it for moisture. If moisture is coming through, don't expect the fancy rubber stuff to stick.
The best concrete paint is powder Kquickrette cement itself, just mix it soopy and apply it with a roller, doesn't peel, doesn't come off, it adheres really well and makes the whole thing look brand new, like day one.
Looking to re-coat a concrete patio where the contractors used H&C from Sherwin Williams. It did not last long (less than 2 years) and it is starting to flake in areas. After looking at your video, you recommend Conflex from Sherwin Williams. I went to the local SW shop, but they said not to use Conflex because it was "difficult to clean" and very adamant about not using it in high traffic areas. In your video you shared that you have used this on this job and your own BB court. Seems like a durable product. I'm not sure what the dealer meant by difficult to clean and avoid high traffic areas. I'm a bit suspiscious of the dealers comment. Any experience that you can share with regards to how easy or difficult Conflex is to maintain?
Looks great, I like the color, I would like to paint it my front steps. Mike would you mind to tell me what is the color code? I am going to store to buy it tomorrow, it's on sale for 40% off now. Thank you!
Instead of paint I put stonebond ( tiny pebbles ) over the concrete around my pool. It has a rough surface which makes it cooler and reduces the chance of slipping. Only drawback is the glue has to be reapplied about every 3 or 4 years. The first couple times I glued it myself, but as it began to age I let the pros take over because they could repair any damage. When I painted the floor in my basement, it still looked good after a couple decades so I only repainted it when we wanted to change the color. The garage was another story. I painted it with 3 different kinds of expensive concrete paint or stain and each time it would come up where I parked my hot car tires. I eventually gave up and learned to live with it. I used paint the last time as close to the color of concrete as I could find and it's not that noticeable.
It's on my outside basketball court here in Maine. Gets covered in snow for 5 months. It's been on there for 5 to 6 years now. It could use a little touch up in some small areas but overall looks very good still.
This video is so helpful! Thank you!!! I’ve gotten so many recommendations from other people and DIY groups about what type of paint to use on our concrete porch. It has been overwhelming. Do you have any recommendations on stripping and cleaning old peeling paint off of a concrete porch? I plan on pressure washing first but want to make sure I get it all off. Most of it is peeling and bubbling anyways. Thanks again!
We mostly use xylene or paint thinner to remove the tough spots of paint. If you use a turbo tip on the pressure washer, that usually removes all the paint.
I have this as project soon at home. Thanks for the tips. Any advice on getting up old glue from outdoor carpet? We tried the pressure washer already. I'm thinking I need to grind it off.
What about acid washing and primer? You may have mentioned something about those I probably missed it. I'm still learning so I'm just asking not trying to be rude or anything.. I enjoy all your videos thanks for taking the time to make them great info in the videos.. I always hear stain is better than paint for concrete what are your thoughts on that? Thanks

Never peels just slowly fades in a decade ..if your garage floors is painted with some silly waterbase paint..grind it off down to bare cement first.h+c will not show any tire marks...if you use a water base "epoxy seal" brand from h depot it adhere very well but has no sheen! Very dull and definitely shows tire marks....

Really good DIY video. Gave me good information on how to paint a concrete porch. I even will try to use Sherman Williams ConFlex concrete sealant paint. Thank you.
Sw makes some great products and after 35 years in the coatings business ive learned you really need to use the right material for the surface like inside walls, Promar200 is cheap, covers well but moreover looks great. i dont get much call for concrete painting so im definitely going to try this product next time someone asks... since its acrylic instead of using cheap chipping brushes you should just by something better like a wooster that you can wash out and not take all day "chipping away" at the edges...and you would really love my masking machine to lay down paper and tape at the lowest spot. you would still edge but then you could roll right up to it... thanks for the video!
That’s actually a very good question. We used to have to do a pH test on newly stuccoed buildings and wait until the levels were sufficiently balanced before applying paint. Short of doing a pH test, you should be ok painting after 28 days.
Yea, both good answers here. Most of the time 28 days. This paint withstands high PH, up to 13 so you could paint a little earlier than 28 days with this one.
Great video! How often do you anticipate having to repaint the surface if the concrete is enclosed in a screen porch with glass windows? Does the paint allow food/drink spill clean up easy and non staining? This is such a quick and inexpensive way to make a porch floor looked finished.
If it wasn't any good I wouldn't have made a video about using it. I said in the video it's been on my outside basketball court for 5 years now in Maine. That's why I made the video because it's the best I've used over the years.

This video cracks me up. I finally got my hands on 4 5 gallon buckets for my back patio and front porch. Anyway I grabbed sample colors (every gray and brown SW had) and limited it to 2 colors but haven't been able to decide. Anyway came back to your vid to see what you used, and sure enough, 1 of the 2 I picked was intellectual grey 🤣
Great vid as always ❤
I was waiting for the cat run across the wet paint lol nice job thank you
Thanks 👍
me too 😉
Thank you! Other posts about painting are not how to at all but too many words and before and after photos/shots. I needed the during! This was helpful and will make my second gallon attempt the final! Hopefully 🤞🏻🤣🙃
I really enjoyed watching this informative video & that patio turned out amazing. 👍🏼
Epoxy is much better that's all you had to say
@@Americafirst-i8q Epoxy is NOT "much better" sorry to say
Anything is better than shitty cracked discolored concrete.
Lots of people are stuck with existing concrete
Any type of paint? What ratio? Thanks
Thanks!
What about doing an acid wash to etch the concrete and increase the strength of the paint/concrete bond?
Hey Mike. Just leaving a comment to bump you up the list so your videos get recommended more. Huge fan, love your work.
Just found your channel today. You do really good work and offer great advice. Thanks for showing a close up of the end result, its a big help for beginners.
Glad to help!
@@MikeDayConcrete: Hi Mike. Great Job sir. Any chance you could help resurface my deck and around the pool area in Palm Desert California? It gets really hot here. Upto 120 degrees! Is there a paint for the climate here?
Sharing knowledge is admirable. I should do more of that myself. Good for you!
Hi Mike, good video. I want to paint the concrete on my covered front porch. I would like to stencil a design over the base coat. Have you done a video for stenciling? Would I have to use special paint for the design and do a seal coat? What can I do to keep it from being slippery when done. Thanks!
These are my exact questions. I can't find info on if I need to seal the stencil and base coat - what did you end up doing?
I never had good luck with painting concrete but I have had awesome results staining it
Stain is far more likely to adhere longer. Thin the stain about 20% for the first coat to get the best adhesion into the concrete. If the stain is acrylic (water based), apply the stain to damp concrete, just as you would if you were resurfacing with a portland cement.
@@chrisgraham2904 I agree. Stay away from paint unless you want a lot more work later on when it flakes.
Great video. Most of the paint I have looked at recommend a primer/sealer be applied first but I noticed you didn’t use one. Any comments on why not ?
I'm a painting contractor, and I've been using Conflex for years on concrete and block. I have jobs that I've done 20 years ago and they still look good. Prep is very important, as with any job, Conflex is not a cheap product.
Do you etch with muriatic acid after pressure washing?
Mike that turned out excellent. Thanks for the tips!
I had a company lay out concrete for my sons half court outside and I’m going to paint. Do you recommend priming it first or if it’s nee concrete can I just do the two coats straight on?
Use conflex all the time
any repairs need to cure out
I live in Northeast. I prefer darker colors, lighter colors get dirty so easy
Great product
How long did it take for the first coat to dry? TY! I want to do this on my patio!!! Great Video!
I used Behr Porch and Patio Paint recently and really liked it! I prepped the concrete per directions and put the paint on with a concrete paint roller from Home Depot and it came out really nice. It was easy to put on and dried fast and only took one coat and you can get it in many different colors….good luck!
@@whyme3286 Thank you so much !!!! Great Information!
stretching with added water actualy keeps it from pealing added ceramic or clay can thicken the paint but the color goes further most think add in just keeps it from pealin just a couple re layering
Helpful video, Mike.
This is a keeper video!
Thank you!
How does the conflex paint hold up in the freezing snow and ice? How long before you need to repaint?
That’s what I’d like to know
Looking to re-coat a concrete patio where the contractors used H&C from Sherwin Williams.
Hi Mike, a very interesting and honest video. Do you have any ideas on painting a resurfaced concrete pool please? We are restoring one in Wales UK
I did a pool deck with this same paint just a few weeks ago. It came out awesome. I've done many pool decks with this stuff over the years.
Cem-coat ( Brick form product) is best i believe for colored coatings...
Looks great, I like the color, I would like to paint it my front steps. Mike would you mind to tell me what is the color code? I am going to store to buy it tomorrow, it's on sale for 40% off now. Thank you!
This color was intellectual gray.
@@MikeDayConcrete Thank you Mike.
Looks great. You've given me a lot of confidence to do the same with my front porch. How would this paint hold up in the winter of say Colorado?
It's on my outside basketball court here in Maine. Gets covered in snow for 5 months. It's been on there for 5 to 6 years now. It could use a little touch up in some small areas but overall looks very good still.
Love Canada beau travail 😊
Fascinating video, I may try… do you recommend a similar product in southern Arizona, where 110+ degrees is not uncommon ?
I use acrylic floor wax on concrete that is in good condition. easy to remove and I can coat it for many years before replacing....
@@MikeDayConcrete Thank you SO much!
A have a question? Did you power wash with just water. before the paint, and what psi do I need to power wash .? I would appreciate your feedback.
I have this as project soon at home. Thanks for the tips. Any advice on getting up old glue from outdoor carpet? We tried the pressure washer already. I'm thinking I need to grind it off.
Did you try brake cleaner? It’s about the most aggressive solvent I know of.
If possible, chose a color as close to the concrete color as possible.
Our preferred method is grinding, but we're all set up for it. It's fast and cleans the concrete at the same time.
@@MikeDayConcrete thank you Mike! Great channel.
great job option to showthat a home owner could easily do in a few hours with a helper
Thanks
No need to acid wash or etch with this paint. As long as you can clean it by pressure washing you're good.
@@MikeDayConcrete How does this topical paint adhere to the concrete without penetrating into the surface with moisture vapors and normal deterioration of concrete?
Thanks for this vid. I am planning on redoing our 30 yr old front porch.
Very informative video. The results look great. I have always used epoxy paint on my concrete with decent results. Will this stuff hold up in a garage?
No!!!..here's the Deal,...if you have bare concrete.use a xylene base, acrylic silicone concrete sealer, solid color..h+c brand Sherwin Williams and or Loews..my customers drive 60.000 pound provost rv's on and is uv sun ray resistant..we get 13 years lasting.

Thank you.
Wow can I hire her ?
Sw makes some great products and after 35 years in the coatings business ive learned you really need to use the right material for the surface like inside walls, Promar200 is cheap, covers well but moreover looks great. i dont get much call for concrete painting so im definitely going to try this product next time someone asks... since its acrylic instead of using cheap chipping brushes you should just by something better like a wooster that you can wash out and not take all day "chipping away" at the edges...and you would really love my masking machine to lay down paper and tape at the lowest spot. you would still edge but then you could roll right up to it... thanks for the video!
Promar200 is interior, correct?
Hi I was wondering what areas you do concrete .How can I contact you because I am looking for someone to do my concrete?
Only in central Maine.
I like that guy his videos are so easy to to understand am motivated
Thanks for all of these videos, Mike. One question - how long should you let a newly laid concrete patio cure before painting like this? Thanks.
That’s actually a very good question. We used to have to do a pH test on newly stuccoed buildings and wait until the levels were sufficiently balanced before applying paint. Short of doing a pH test, you should be ok painting after 28 days.
28 days. 7 days with a rapid set product. Most manufactures will let you get away with doing a mat test to see if the moisture has evaporated.
Would you recommend this product for a pool deck?
Yes, we do pool decks with it a lot.
knowledge is power cheers Mike
How this paint is better than any other? Is it gonna flake off after first winter and freezing temperatures?
If it wasn't any good I wouldn't have made a video about using it. I said in the video it's been on my outside basketball court for 5 years now in Maine. That's why I made the video because it's the best I've used over the years.
