I know that river. I have been there twice and that clear water, cute bridges and monster trout are unforgettable. I saw a few fish that looked to be between 15 & 20lb. But only managed to catch smaller models of around 3 to 5lb. Thanks for sharing. It brought back some great memories.
Incredible video man. Love that you risked it for that fish, didnt pay off, stayed on the water soaking wet then caught the beautiful 9 lb stick of butter.
I agree, this is one of ,y favorite videos of yours! Awesome footage. It reminds me of the emotional ups and downs of landing and losing huge browns in Colorado. They are my favorite trout and love the head shakes and deep dives. Thanks for posting!,
Do you live in CO? There are very large Browns south west of Colorado Springs and in the mountains west of denver. There are lots of big fish in Wyoming as well
Gareth- Love your style. The chase down the river was EPIC and brings back so many memories of fishing here in NZ!! Thanks for all the effort in producing these vids.
So to be honest I think this is the first video I’ve watched in a while that has had actual struggle to catch a fish! Didn’t cut out the work to get the fish like other people do. Awesome vid man, wish I could make it out there for a guided fishing trip.
All I can say is WOW!! Awesome fish, amazing river!! Here in the Northeast USA, our Browns would never bite when the water is so clear. Great job landing those BEASTS and thanks for the video!!
Outstanding video. Comming from Canada, that water is as clean as I have ever seen. The respect to which you handle your fish is incredible I commend you. My only negative comment would be your language...the bad fish comment is funny. .
Awesome video made me feel like I was right there. Gorgeous scenery kind of surprised such splendor still exists, we with an appreciation really should work to preserve it for posterity. Rock on buddy!
Thanks for this awesome vid man I just got out of surgery and can’t really post on my channel but I love watching your vids.. I’m a huge fan of your trout fishing 🎣 thanks for the inspiration.. tight lines
Love the chase downstream, especially while wearing my THNZ T-shirt. I think that makes me a fanboy. Thanks for all the humor and landing that 9 pounder took me back to my last NZ trip when is landed a 9’er. Sadly that was in ‘09. Need to come back. You make fishing fun dude. 🙌🏼
Coolest upload in a while, you looked like you were having serious fun. That big brown right at your feet, unreal! Hope the gear is ok - I learned my lesson the hard way so got a simms dry creek pack. Saved me more than once since.
I have watched so many New Zealand fly fishing vids and have yet to ever see a small trout caught. Every fish in New Zealand is a pig!!! Wish I were there. Great video!
All the thrill of the hunt and chase for big Trout in a very fast flowing stream which a lot of us know can have a deep hole to walk into , in the heat of the chase! Very well done Sir!l PS I don't mean walking into the hole😅
I've gone swimming after fish in that little river too. Serious flow for such a small channel. Oh yeh, the Loop Q is dynamite. Just bought a 7 weight and it is remarkably light, powerful, sensitive... Like so many others have said, good as rods costing 2-3 times as much.
Nice vid! I'm a trout/salmon guide/bum from Michigan, USA (Great Lakes etc.). We have epic fly-fishing for trout, steelhead and salmon in our river systems. Different scenery than your's but very similar otherwise... Cracking up at the "colorful" language, which is exactly what you'd hear here in Michigan. You sound as if you've spent time here, based on your very proper cursing techniques. Tight lines dude! Keep your hat dry!
Trout Hunting NZ thank you very much, I was looking at them and was just wondering if they are as good as they look? Love the idea of being able to weigh your fish but I’ve had some bad experiences ordering nets without seeing them.
Great video!!! Laughing with you when you followed that fish downstream. I thought well he posted this video so he must survive!! Speaking of Browns,I caught a 10lb Scottish brown trout at the weekend. Ripped me to my backing twice.
Looks like you are having a great fall season, here in CT it's been cold, heavy rain, more on the way and my local waters are a little over the bank right now!
Ok Gareth , I have watched over 35- 45 of your videos dude, and love em all however this one is my favourite, you really did go for a long walk with that brown... Ace man, cant wait to get the op to come down from Victoria and book a guiding day with you. D I have fished the south a bit but the north will be a first for me.
Mate the river, the scenery, those fish, wow. What i wouldn't give to fish some of those N.Z rivers, just absolutely magic.
Don't you love how monster fish make you forget all your technique and skill, it turns into survival mode😂
I know that river. I have been there twice and that clear water, cute bridges and monster trout are unforgettable. I saw a few fish that looked to be between 15 & 20lb. But only managed to catch smaller models of around 3 to 5lb. Thanks for sharing. It brought back some great memories.
Best fly fishing channel for me.

Nice. Shows the highs, lows and hardships that all combine to show what a day of fly fishing is all about.
Awesome video made me feel like I was right there. Gorgeous scenery kind of surprised such splendor still exists, we with an appreciation really should work to preserve it for posterity. Rock on buddy!
