- Hey frans, tune in to learn my take on how to make your synths more like Flume, ODESZA, Ekali... to name a few.
How? Creative sidechaining. Been thinking about this one for a while, had to crank out a little sample for yall. Listen to the songs Boy - ODESZA, On Top - Flume, Crystal Eyes - Ekali, and you'll hear the sound I'm talking about. It's a fun one to use! I made a quick drum beat and illustrated the synth technique with some chords in Xfer Serum. The same idea could be applied in FL Studio, Logic, or any other DAW.

Yeah! I usually like my instruments such as pianos and synths to play a big part of the rhythm of the beat, so I have to try this out. The tuning drums vid, using compression to add depth vid and now this.. subbed!

Sounds like flume recorded a vacuum cleaner and put it in a sampler.

Flume was original creator of the super sidechained effect, at least first brought it to the mainstream, people ripped his style so had to reinvent for skin, then again for his latest mixtape.

I understand what you’re doing, it works. I also think you can achieve more control over the groove by simply automating the volume of the instrument.
Hey Henrik, fair enough! This is more about having 'less control,' if you will. To me, there is beauty in the imperfections resulting from doing it like this in real time.
But its easier to "play around" with the rhythm if you do it like this.. you could use a physical fader of course and play around, but in this way you can drum in the ducking
Noise gate also helps
Like when your playing the piano and you can play with more velocity and it can give a natural nuance to those notes instead of playing your notes all at the same velocity. You can add a lot more texture to your music by doing that.
what is the terminology for this specific technique, do we still not know?
I call it the Ghost Sidechain :)
