Steely Dan was probably one of the most versatile groups from the 70's for sure. I would encourage you both to look further into their music catalog because, this group turned out some great memorable music that definitely won't disappoint, " Peg " " Reelin in the years " " Deacon Blues " " Hey Nineteen " just to name a few.
Asia & BJ, you'll love their "Deacon Blues", "Aja" and "Josie". Some of the greatest recorded music ever produced by Donald and Walter. Big rabbit hole to dive into. Enjoy!!!
Steely Dan is the name of the band. And I dont care what anybody says, they are one of the best modern jazz bands of all time. They had several radio hits, like "Hey Nineteen", "Kid Charlemagne" and "Black Cow".
They're a rock band. A rock band that can be described as jazzy as they did mix in elements of jazz, but not simply a jazz band. They are no more a jazz band than KISS is a disco band. Not that I believe IWMFLY is a disco song, it only mixes in a disco element or two.
The band Stuff was highly underrated and amazing, Gordon Edwards, Cornell dupree, Richard tee, Eric Gale and the awesome Stevie gadd... for who ever who sees this go take a listen please.
I listen to this song 100 times a month....Pure genius, perfection, the congas, the lyrics, the guitar solo and organ ( maybe the best ever in this context ), find the extended version ( DJ Disco Cat ), put on headphones, and go with the vibe....this song is Morroccan, Middle Eastern, disco, Santana-ish.....One of the great songs of ALL Time....
Welcome to the rabbit hole that is Steely Dan!! They are possibly one of my all-time favorite bands because they have some of the most impressive musicians playing with them. Their music IS the best music to listen to when you're driving!!
Steely Dan was another great band of the 70's. This was a great song of theirs. Also check out Deacon Blues, Peg, Reelin' In The Years, Hey Nineteen, and Rikki Don't Lose That Number.
Throughout the 70's, Steely Dan was the ONE band that every musician respected. They were universally praised for their style, talent, and presentation. Brilliant combo, often way ahead of everyone else.
Don't be silly, loads of bands were respected in the 70's by fellow musicians like Floyd, Zeppelin, ACDC not too mention solo artists like Elton John, David Bowie considering it's the best decade in musical history..Steely Dan was a great band but to say they were the 'one' band respected in the 70's is nonsense !
@@johnhopkinson4054 Yes. I hate band fanboys saying "this band was the best" on every reaction video their band is featured in. Steely Dan is damn good, but so are countless artists of that decade.
Steely Dan was so cool back then. All the musicians were impeccable in their individual craft. Donald Fagen s voice as lead was so unique. They were as popular as any group in the 70 s.
They were perfectionists, lyrics were hip and smart and ambigous. Their fusion of styles was unique. Correct they aren't one genre...Steely Dan is their own genre.
First album, first cut - this was our initial exposure to Steely Dan, and we'd heard nothing just like it before. I never looked back (ha!). Steely Dan is Walter Becker (R.I.P.) and Donald Fagen and pretty much every top of the class session musician in the world, varying from song to song to song. As for the name Steely Dan, google it, you'll never believe me if I tell you where it comes from. What to next listen to of theirs - pretty much pick anything, you almost can't go wrong. That being said My Old School, Kid Charlamagne, Don't Take Me Alive, The Royal Scam, Dirty Work, Aja, FM.....
Steely Dan has always been such a great band because they're always so tight. There's nothing there that doesn't 'fit' - and doesn't do it wonderfully. True musicians inside and out.
This is the first track on the first Steely Dan album, “Can’t Buy A Thrill”, released in November of 1972. It’s one of those albums that doesn’t have one bad song, it sounds like what most groups put out as a “greatest hits” album. Another excellent song to react to on this album is “Brooklyn”.
I became a fan of Steely Dan when I saw them in concert on January 28, 1973 at the Terrace Ballroom in Salt Lake City. This this song was popular. The opening act was also a band just starting out and became very popular, the Doobie Brothers
I was in high school in the late 70’s, graduated in ‘79, and Steely Dan was always in background , one of those albums you out on when you wanted to chill with yourself or some great friends and drink something good and listen to some good music! And real music lovers appreciated great bands like Steely Dan and others.
Some reactor is actually doing that. He is listening to every Steely Dan song on every album in order with no skips. Last I checked he was up to Gaucho.
So glad you got around to Steely Dan. You’ll surely recognize a few of their tunes as well as some hip-hop / rap songs that sampled them. There’s not a single bad song in their catalog.

Steely Dan was unique & were very popular from the get-go!! For many years they were only a studio-recording band but finally they started to do touring with live concerts!! They were a jazz-fusion band, mixing jazz with pop & rock music & their lyrics to their songs are really spetacular with every song they wrote!!
