Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is the very definition of insanity. People who don't learn from their mistakes are doomed to repeat them.
With Steely Dan you will get Jazz, Funk, Blues, Rock and everything in between. This song is titled "Do it Again". In the first verse a man kills another for stealing his water. Though he is caught, he is not convicted so he goes out and does it again. In the second verse a man falls for a two timing woman, and though she breaks his heart he does it again. Verse three is about a gambler who though he claims he's done with gambling, finds himself back in Vegas doing it again. Enjoy one of the greatest bands ever. You won't find a bad song.
I was 21 years old when this came out in 1971. Almost 55 years ago! Still one of the best. I've been listening to this band nearly all my life. You have a lifetime of Steely Dan to catch up on my friend.
It was actually released in November of 1972. I was 12 but I have an 11 year older brother who got into them immediately and bought me a copy since he liked them so much. So I’ve been into them since their debut. They are still in my top 5 bands of all time. Stones, Zeppelin, Floyd, Genesis round out the other 4 in no particular order.
This was the 1st song I ever heard by Steely Dan, and it has always been my favorite! It brings back memories of a Summer with a group of old friends. Thanks so much for your reaction!
It’s STEELY DAN! You’re listening to the GOAT for Jazz-Rock group. GREAT composition, GREAT arrangement, GREAT song writing, GREAT vocals, GREAT performance!!!😮😮😮 That’s STEELY DAN!😊 Hey! Do it again!!
🎊 I bought this CASSETTE in 1973, my Senior Year in High School!!! Been on the road-to-ruin with the Dan ever since. Enjoy your journey through the 70’s; and if you get lost…just pull over and enjoy the scenery‼️
I've heard several guitarists of renown speak highly of their sessions, sitting in for a song or two w/ Steely Dan, Mark Knopfler being one of them. . .
Imagine if this is your first song on your debut album. Outstanding musicianship, smart lyrics about three human vices (Violence/revenge, toxic relationships, and gambling) and our tendency to repeat our mistakes. Loved it in 1972 and still one of my favourites today.
Nice try, but High Fidelity became a real thing in the 1960s. The FTC got in on the act with audio equipment manufacturers to label what was, and what was not High-Fidelity, and they didn't need any input from Steely Dan, which didn't exist at the time.
It warms my heart to see a young man digging a song I heard when I was 15, listening late at night to a portable radio playing Chicago AM rock stations. Everything you said, all of your analysis, was spot on. Incidentally, since mentioned it, the band chose its name from a mention of a steam powered vibrator William Burrows called the "Steely Dan" in his novel Naked Lunch (published in 1959 - two years after I was born).
I love this song, takes me back to my childhood and instantly puts me in a great mood. This was the first song I ever heard from The Dan and I have loved their music ever since.
Steely Dan, after their initial run, were the duo of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. They employed a number of highly regarded studio session musicians on their albums and rotated them around as they pleased. Every single one is/was a top notch musician. Basically, Donald and Walter came up with the groove and chord progressions, lyrics and melodies, and then had several studio musicians record something to go along with it, and they picked what they liked best, including these VERY tasty solos. They had some of the most creative songs during their heyday. Their fusion of different styles is what sets them apart and really gives them a unique sound that no other band has.
Do It Again" features an electric sitar solo by Denny Dias. The "plastic organ" solo by Donald Fagen was performed on a Yamaha YC-30 with a sliding pitch-bending control.[
I find that people who love funk, when they hear something that is not at all funky, but nevertheless pleasing to their ear, declare the song to be "funky" when they review it. I've even heard Yes descibed as a "funky" band, which is about as far from the truth as anything can be. "Do it Again" is pretty clearly a cool fusion of jazz and latin music.
Bear in mind this was made over 50 years ago… no digital ANYTHING… and that was one of the first times the guy playing the electric sitar (not a guitar) had even picked up the instrument
MMB, you’re going to find you’re sub total rising by continuing down the Steely Dan hole. There are tons of Dan Fans, and we love to see younger people get introduced to what we feel is the top echelon of pop/rock/jazz music. We get a kick out of seeing you young reactors get surprised and blown away by this band. I’d advise you to just go through their catalog - so far you’ve listened to a cut from their 6th and then 1st album - and Can’t Buy a Thrill has 2 more all time classic songs; Reelin’ in the Years, and Dirty Work! Keep going - we’ll be with you on this Dan journey!
Royal Scam is their peak imho. Aja and Gaucho are their technical sonic peaks, but Royal Scam is the culmination of their story telling greatness, while still retaining the grittiness of their early work. I think those last two albums are when they received criticism about polishing the music so much, they lost some of the soul of their earlier work. Personally, I feel all their work is top shelf, but Royal Scam is the one you put in the vault.
The first song on the first album, that Denny Dias solo, they had me. Since 1972, they have been the gold standard for excellence. Black Cow, try that one on. Funk+ and what a groove.
Back in the day I had a tape of SD live that I treasured because they weren’t playing live. Such an amazing performance. When they started playing live again I was in heaven. So tight.
Steely Dan is a pretty eclectic band! Deep rabbit hole here! I believe this song had to do with controlling impulses or lack thereof. React to their highest chart topper "Rikki, Don't Loose That Number" or "Deacon Blues" next. Thanks.
Dirty work, reelin in the years should be next as they are on the same album but please don't stop there. Sooooo many fantastic classics from them that it's too many to name
they are a jazz band yo. Thats why the back to back solos, just like jazz, jam bands, bluegrass, etc. And the lyrics are about addiction... to crime, to sex, to gambling
The Dan are a truly unparalleled band. I've been listening to them for decades and they just never get old. PS. The album this is from is called Can't Buy a Thrill, which is a line from a Bob Dylan song.

That was my intro into Steely Dan as it came out in my senior yr of HS and to this day it’s my favorite song by them and Can’t Buy A Thrill is my favorite album of theirs.
Gotta rock out to My Old School! Talk about a FABULOUS song! One of the greatest guitar solos! AND... its just a great tune! Steely Dan is one of my favorites! Love your videos! 😍👍
Steely Dan is named after an artifact in the Beatnik writer William Burroughs book titled Naked Lunch. In the book, Steely Dan is the name of a woman's appliance.
Deacon Blues, Black cow ,Aja,and HOME AT LAST are all on the same album as PEG and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM I DISCOVERED THOSE SONGS BECAUSE OF MY LOVE FOR THE SONG PEG !!
Steely Dan is definitely a vibe, like you said. They were also named after a vibe. Apparently, "Steely Dan," was originally the name of a certain brand and/or model of metal vibrator.
SD lyrics are a journey 😂. Never straight forward or obvious. It’s like you’re listening to a conversation full of “inside jokes” that you kinda had to be there to get it. After you know their music, you feel like you’re in the click and you know the story.
Let's have a discussion about percussion...dayum! The congas were on point in this joint! I loved the WTF look on your face when the free form jazz piano first kicked in. Then, as the groove started to work for you I could see you were on board. Another groovy reaction!
This song remindes me of a friend who had an early to mid 60's Teal Blue Pontiac Bonneville convertible with white interior and all the chrome inside and out. We cruised all around Annadale and Fairfax county when this song came out. I had a 57 Chevy Belair with power steering . Those were good days around 76 or 77.
Dude, that is so awesome that you've gotten to the point where you can make references like Ray manzarek from The Doors. If you ever get off into exploring the early movements of punk, you've got to check out the iconic and influential early punk band X from Los Angeles, and it makes sense right? But anyway Ray Manzarek not only produced that first X album because he loved that young LA band so much, he also played really cool keys on some of the songs. And while it was mostly original material on there, including Johnny Hit and Run Pauline, which just exploded like a gut-wrenching bombshell in that part of the musical world, X also does a Doors cover on that album with Ray Manzarek playing organ - Soul Kitchen.
For a song with great transitions from one instrument solo to another, react to Al Stewart's "The Year Of The Cat". From Vocals to strings to acoustic guitar to electric guitar to saxophone back to vocals. Absolutely brilliant.
I think the first verse was about somebody getting arrested for something, then getting let out (as often happens when somebody is a kind of low level criminal) ---- then they're let out back on the street. Then you're out going out to go "back Jack to do it again" wheels turnin round and round. IN and out of jail. Just doing crimes over and over.
Chillax with Steely Dan ! 'Do It Again' by Steely Dan could be about karma or about making the same mistakes over and over and the consequences of jumping in feet first.
The lead is done on an electric Danelectro Sitar. For those that don't know about the origin of the bands name... the name was taken from a strap-on-dildo, named Steely Dan III from Yokohama, that was mentioned in William S. Burroughs' novel Naked Lunch. Steely Dan found inspiration for their band name in the pages of beat writer William S. Burroughs's novel Naked Lunch
No doubt ,I love Aja and Gaucho and beyond, but I love this early shit. An almost total stranger turned me on to this group....and I thank him and never looked back.
Interesting, "Peg" is from their second to last album Aja, often considered their masterpiece, and "Peg" is probably the pinnacle of their craft as writers, arrangers and producers. "Do it Again" is from their first album, much more raw and rock oriented, but still very sophisticated writing and arrangement, but the very beginning of their evolution as artists. So you kind of started at end of their artistic growth and then jumped to the very beginning. It's all amazing music and everything that made them unique, singular musicians is present throughout. I'd love to see your reaction to their subsequent albums in between. I'd suggest particularly "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" or "Any Major Dude Will Tell You" from Pretzel Logic and "Dr. Wu" or "Black Friday" from Katy Lied, my two favorite Steely Dan albums. You're kind of on the right track about the lyrics to the song, it is about a man who can't control himself, who keeps making the same mistakes over and over by feeding his impulsive nature and hedonistic desires.
This song is basically about not learning from mistakes and going back and doing it again.
HOOKERS. OF THE 70S. I KNOW I LIVED IT. STEELY DAN, 5 OR 6 TIMES. MULTIBAND CONCERT ERA. 3. 5. UP TO 10 BANDS 1 SHOW.
We've all done it. And we'll do it again ... Jack. 😉
Yes. It's about Karma.
Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is the very definition of insanity. People who don't learn from their mistakes are doomed to repeat them.
The Sunk Cost Fallacy
When real musicians get off work, they listen to Steely Dan.
Just to keep that vibe up but wind down and center at the same time. Then...sleepy time.
Lol, I just played a wedding and here I am 😂 They’re musicians musicians :)
lol. Love that.😄👌

I'd add Razor Boy, With A Gun, King Of The World and Pearl Of The Quarter to that list... phenomenal!
I just love that young people are starting to realize just how fantastic the music of that time was. So glad you like it.

Steely Dan are renowned for their killer guitarists;" Denny Dias, Jeff "skunk"

LETS GO!!!!!!!! enjoy the LONG STEELY DAN Ride
Steely Dan is one my favorite bands ever! It has been many decades and still part of my life. Phenomenal musicians
Their recording quality was so top tier, the term High Fidelity was created to describe it. No Bull. One of the best bands in history.
Nice try, but High Fidelity became a real thing in the 1960s. The FTC got in on the act with audio equipment manufacturers to label what was, and what was not High-Fidelity, and they didn't need any input from Steely Dan, which didn't exist at the time.

...ahh yes - before WLS went to the 'talk format'. We would pick up the jams from across the Lake.
Steely Dan shows you the gritty, dirty underside of life and pull no punches...
Keep going on the Steely Dan journey man, you can’t go wrong with any track.
I love this song, takes me back to my childhood and instantly puts me in a great mood. This was the first song I ever heard from The Dan and I have loved their music ever since.
Kid Charlemane is funky as hell, bro.
Can't wait to see you do the song facts to see what it's about.😁

"I've never heard that before..."
The definition of Steely Dan.
This is their best grove, love it.
Loooove steely Dan!!!!
This, Hey 19 , When Josie comes home & a few more are smooth as butter & ear candy

Steely Dan ❤ Never get sick of people reacting to thier brilliance!
Behold. The 'Steely Dan' wormhole.
Donald Fagen. In the era....Best composer in the "Rock" industry...by a mile. At least.
LOVE THE SITAR SOLO!
The song that started it all.
First album, first track. This song really really made a statement when it hit the radio play in the 70's. Everyone noticed.
@@egoequus6263 Imagine having the balls to say " ok world, this is us, ya dig?" With this song?
Steely Dan is a genre of its own. No one compares to the high quality production and overall performance perfection.
I think the same about Pink Floyd.
They're out there occupying thier own space.
Super sad I never saw SD in concert or even Donald
Back in the 70's Steely Dan was a band that people who listened to Funk and those who listened to Hard Rock could come together and appreciate.
That's a great point!
I find that people who love funk, when they hear something that is not at all funky, but nevertheless pleasing to their ear, declare the song to be "funky" when they review it. React to "FM no static at all" by Steely Dan. You'll love it.
One of the great American groups if not the best.
My favorite song by them. It will get stuck in my head and I don't mind.
I suggest Josie, Black Cow, and Deacon Blues. Steely Dan can become quite addictive...
The shaker and the congas set the rhythm nicely and you almost don't even hear the drum set.

Steely Dan took their name from the William Burroughs novel NAKED LUNCH. Its a "character" that was a Dil-do.
