One of the best ever bands to come out of the 70's. My Mom gave me this song as a kid because I was such a hellion. It's a song that only gets better with the passing of time.
Steely Dan is definitely a rabbit hole you want to dive into. "Aja" (pronounced "Asia") is one of the great albums in music history and absolutely worth a listen from beginning to end.
The guitar solo is actually Denny Dias playing an electric sitar and the organ solo is played by Donald Fagen on some cheap piece of garbage organ he found in a thrift store, but it produced the sound he was going for. Fagen and Walter Becker were maniacal about every note being exactly what they wanted.
Hey TNT, Steely Dan were actually 2 people, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, who surrounded their selves with the finest studio musicians around to produce a precise, clean sound.
Not at first. This debut album and the next 2, Countdown to Ecstasy and Pretzel Logic, were the original Steely Dan Band. Fagen and Becker actually joined an existing group of Jeff Skunk Baxter, Denny Dias, Jim Hodder, and David Palmer. They toured and were a typical rock band until 1974. Only after Fagen and Becker decided they didn't want to keep touring did they transition to a "studio only" band with dozens of guest musicians.
Steely Dan is their own genre. You’ll see that as you dive more into their catalog of music. Their sound developed into a more funky, jazzy sound as they released each album. The best studio musicians were hired to work on each song on each album. Their grooves have been sampled literally hundreds of times. You’ll recognize their song Black Cow immediately which was sampled by Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz. I suggest a Steely Dan stream for these rock and roll hall of fame members. ❤️✌️😁
Good comments. While Steely Dan isn't my all-time favorite band (Zeppelin, The Who for me there), but I looooooooove this song. IMO, catchiest/smoothest guitar solo of ANY rock song. VERY smooth, mixing in the keyboards, etc...INCREDIBLE!!
The lyrics to Steely Dan songs are just about subterranean, they're cryptic and dense with meaning. Part of the appeal to many fans (I raise my hand as well).
You folk are just catching this, I heard it as it was gettn airplay as a 70s kid. Good sounds was just that. Blow your mind with Alan Parsons .....y'all late fa sure
Steely Dan wrote songs about some of the grittier aspects of life. "Do It Again" was about someone whose vices led him to keep on repeating the same mistakes, "Dirty Work" deals with infidelity, "Reeling In The Years" is a reflection on a wild relationship with an unappreciative girl - and these are on the FIRST album! P.S. "Midnight Cruiser" deals with a couple of guys who are doing a last hurrah on the streets that are different from when they were younger. A very melancholy tune with a smooth jazz sound.
Great songs for sure but you need to listen to some more steely dan bro. Check out “The Royal Scam” album and let me know if you have any new favorite songs. After that maybe some “Countdown to Ecstasy” and some “Aja”, then “Gaucho”, etc.
Man you nailed it... Steely Dan has very cryptic music, and to her point you get lost in the groove so you don't 100% pay attention to the words. Exactly how this song and MOST of their songs can be described. Cryptic, hidden meanings and lost on the melody. Pure Genius.
I feel that this should be the first Steely Dan song ppl should listen to when they are hearing them for the first time. It's the first song i ever heard by them back in 1973
Steely Dan was probably one of the most versatile groups from the 70's for sure. I would encourage you both to look further into their music catalog because, this group turned out some great memorable music that definitely won't disappoint, " Peg " " Reelin in the years " " Deacon Blues " " Hey Nineteen " just to name a few.
I remember back in the 80s working at a top-end audio shop for home and car audio, we would always put on Steely Dan to truly hear the clarity of the speakers and the deep bass. Great choice of track selection!
Yep, Jo..I had this album in high school in 74 -75 era. ..Dirty Work, Reelin' in the Years , Midnite Cruiser, etc.. Not a bad song on it...Ricki Don't Lose That Number , great also from another album.
This Is Their Debut Album & The Perfect Place To Start..Once You've Heard This Album,, You Will Know Why They Are Considered To Be Absolutely Legendary Music Icons.
Tasha is so cute moving her shoulders immediately to the groove. 😆 This track, the very first track on the very first album, almost immediately became a HUGE radio hit. How's that for hitting the ground running. This was the original Steely Dan BAND. Fagen and Becker joined forces as songwriters for this preexisting band forned by guitarists Denny Dias and Jeff Skunk Baxter, also included drummer Jim Hodder and vocalist David Palmer. They were a fairly typical rock group circa 1972 and toured from 72>74. Only later did Fagen and Becker want to stop touring and concentrate on their obsession with studio perfection beginning with the Katy Lied album. They wanted to push more in the jazz fusion direction from what started as a more traditional rock band. So this song has been an iconic and popular Steely Dan hit and favorite and has been played on the radio for 50+ years now. Still as smooth as silk and cool as ever! Only Steely Dan can make a song about a gambling addiction sound so laid back and groovin.
Donald Fagen and the late Walter Becker were the core of the group, but they had famous friends come in and jam with them on the albums. Michael McDonald and Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter (both are/were Doobie Brothers) are two I can think of off the top of my head, but there were others! Love their jazz-fusion sound!
Perfection, and yes, every note had to reflect it, they not only had well known musicians, add female vocalist Valerie Simpson (of Ashford & Simpson fame)... Mr. Fagan's solo album "The Nightfly" is a tasty jazz treat, an awesome sax solo on the track "Maxine" 🙌🏻🙌🏻
We used Steely Dan for all my wife’s breathing exercises when she was preparing to have our 5 kids ! It just made for an easy & smooth rhythm & easy listening for these exercises !
Hmmmmm, memories flooding back ,passion, pleasure ,groans and sighs, sounds of youth dancing between truths and lies, when my youth was full of warm hellos snd cold goodbyes, made you feel and think hey? THE DAN,,NICE TO SEE YOU FEEL IT,RESPECT
Ol' Jack was a player. Living life again and again with his vices that kept breaking him down like a wheel tuning. Steely Dan has a remarkable catalog of music.
I was lucky enough to see them a few years ago before Walter Becker, who is one of the original two members passed. I've always listened to Steely Dan and they didn't disappoint live 🔥👍🏼
Those of us who grew up to this amazing music can sit back and marvel at the reactions that all of you have when hearing some of the greatest artist in history ❤️
Hah! Your reaction was PERFECT! Even back in the day: -You like Steely Dan? -Heard of them I think...not sure... [Plays some Steely Dan] -Oh yeah! I love that song...and THAT one...and that one...they are so good! Once you hear them...mmmmm...delicious! Yes, yes they are. Everything they did was spot on. Such a deep rabbit hole...I love F.M., Hey Nineteen, Reelin' in the Years, Kid Charlemagne, Ricky Don't Lose That Number, Peg, and Deacon Blues. Walter Becker (RIP)...so talented
CBAT I have been listening to for fifty years. Every time I hear it again, there are things that I didn't hear before, new interpretations that I missed. All of SD is that way...
Glad to see you getting into the genius of Steely Dan. They are comprised of Walter Becker (R.I.P.) and Donald Fagan with many talented session musicians. I always considered them a sort of rock / jazz fusion band. You will find that the lyrics for most of their songs have deep meaning and add to the experience of their excellent musicianship. They are one of those bands who did not record a bad song. Enjoy the deep deep rabbit hole!!
I’m 53 and have an aunt who is about 7 years older than me and in the 70’s when I was a little kid she was a cool high school girl who played all the great rock of the 70’s and she (and my hippie daddy) made sure I loved Steely Dan and other great rock bands. Steely Dan was so talented and versatile and different! Amazing band! Steely Dan was made up of two (I think) founding guys on guitar and keyboard and every other musician you hear was rotating musicians like studio musicians that would record music with the two founding guys. The keyboard player is still alive and still playing music but the guitarist died about 8ish years ago at age 61 I believe from a stroke he suffered after a bad fall. Sad too because he was an amazing musician. Watching him play was magic. Super talented with a great sound. I’ve never met a person who didn’t love this song. It makes anyone just move!
I believe that this, like most Steely Dan songs, has lyrics that can be interpreted several different ways. To me this song represents addictions and/or obsessions suchas gambling and love. There are gambling references such as the "wheel" which could easi;u mean a roulette wheel and another that says "with a handle in your hand" which could mean a slot machine., There are references to a relationship that is certainly not a stable one. Is that love..... or is it an obsession. I believe that Fagan and Becker wrote lyrics that are up for interpretation by the individual listener.
So many great songs to discover! I recommend My Old School, Bodhisattva, Hey Nineteen, Peg... the list goes on forever, dive deep into their rabbit hole 🐰🎵
This was the first song on side one of their debut album. Released in 1972 and it's still as relevant as ever. Go through their records one by one in chronological order. You'll be happy you did.
I can tell by the joy this song has brought you the this won't be the last time you will be having "the Dan" on your channel. They never made a bad song. They also deployed some of the best studio musicians in the world. There production quality is legendary.
Groovin to this song on 70s stereo there was nothing better there was a vibe to it. New words entered our vocabulary. Truly a great time to listen to music.
This song demonstrates what it means to make COMPLETELY NEW music. When it hit the air waves, there was absolutely nothing to compare it with... although your "early Santana" comment gets near to the right neighborhood. But the use of a rockin sitar solo... DIFFERENT!
Yes. You got it. Three mistakes, criminal, relationships, gambling are three examples used about humans repeating bad judgment done over and over without learning. The Leonard's spots haven't moved. This song is some of the easier lyrics to decipher they wrote. If you react to any more Steely Dan you'll see what I mean. I believe Steely Dan created it's own genre. I believe their sound is unique.✌
Do it again was a prelude to the direction Steely Dan went in the middle to late 70s leaning towards jazz rock style than exclusively rock.Do it again has Afro-Latin feel.Great song.
Watching you both bobbing and nodding, enjoying the music does me good. I had a bad day and after watching several of your videos, I am beginning to feel better. Thank you! ❤️
I've been listening to Steely Dan for 50 years and everything they do is cool and smooth!! .. You guys were smiling and getting right into it, every Steely Dan song still puts a smile on my face!! .. Genius is an understatement!! .. Thanks for the great reaction ..
Uh-oh! Another rabbit hole! Steely Dan are Donald Fagan and Walter Becker (RIP) with many studio musicians who became famous in their own right including Michael McDonald, Larry Carlton, Steve Gadd, Bernard Purdie among many, MANY others. Enjoy!
One of the things that still amazes me about the seventies and late sixties music is the huge diversity genre and styles. The very same rock radio station you listen to Mike play Steely Dan 1 minute then Alice Cooper another, then the Beatles, Gordon Lightfoot, Marvin Gaye, Black Sabbath and then ELO. Jim Croce, The Rolling Stones. The list goes on and on and the diversity goes on and on. And whether it was a ballad or folk music or hardcore rock and roll 95% of it was outstanding music.
@@tommythompson9565 just in an amusing note: I even remember a little song called "The Music Box" that accidentally got mixed in to the rock and roll station circulation when it was intended as a classical tune and it ended up being a hit because people liked it. Does anyone else remember that song ?
Very insightful on the lyrics. And the music is hypnotic. It is definitely worth a second listening. The music and the lyrics are so good, they compete for your attention. Repeated listening reveals new treasures, that are seemingly endless. Great work! Keep going!
Be careful listening to Steely Dan. They're so good and unique they'll spoil you 😄 One of my favorite bands. I have all their music. The album it's on has a lot of great tunes. Listen to their song "Josie". Has a whole different vibe.
Funny, when Tasha said she imagined people back in the day in studio 54 doing the hustle to this, I said out loud to myself "do the hustle to "Do It Again?" As soon as I said that, she paused in the middle of what she was saying and said "you can do the hustle to this, it doesn't have to be disco." I didn't know Tasha was telepathic.🙂
FUN FACT: This song is about addiction in all its forms.
One of the greatest bands of the 70's, hit after hit. Had rock on fire. Yes sir!!!
This song has a groove so wide, you could land a plane on it.
Agreed!!
This!!
Yeah, but you definitely NEED a safety harness, so you can have someone pull you out if you get stuck 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣.
I agree.. I remember putting Aja on my record player and just playing it over and over
Go right to Aja or Gaucho to hear amazing production values and studio musicians playing Iconic Jazz Rock . Waste no time for aural eargasms !
As an older person, it makes me very happy to see younger people smile while hearing music they've never heard before.
Thank you, I enjoyed it.
That's me.
You can tell it definitely touched a spot in their young hearts..😊😊
Got to love these reactions to the music of greens and twenties. This music should never be forgotten
I love both of your personalties... ..so engaging. Wonderful to listen and see your reaction. Tasteful, intelligent commentary.
Steely Dan: Your favorite band’s favorite band.
The 70's was the greatest decade for music because of the variety of genres and the incredible artistry from master musicians.
Probably a Farfisa lol
@@MrRabbit43 it was a cheap Yamaha organ with a pitch bend. Very cool sound he got out of it
The keyboard solo perhaps but the main part is a Wurlitzer from what I've read

Steely Dan Has A HUGE Catalog Of Great Music That Is More Than Well Worth Your Time Exploring..TRUTH!!
Steely Dan is definitely a band.
Be careful listening to Steely Dan. They're so good and unique they'll spoil you 😄 One of my favorite bands. I have all their music. The album it's on has a lot of great tunes. Listen to their song "Josie". Has a whole different vibe.
Love their song Josie!! No one ever reacts to it though
@@Noelle0026 Yep. And I don't know why. It's such a great song. One of their best. It's got such a funky riff.
TNT! You're fire! Love your reactions and your choices!
