Oh man you guys have got to get into some more Steely Dan, they're definitely one of those stand-out groups of the 70's and they have an enormous catalogue of great music. Don't Take Me Alive would be a good one to do next. Also, I have no idea what version this is but there are large parts edited out, you might want to listen to the original song when you get a chance for the full experience.
Steely Dan’s music catalog isn’t a “rabbit hole,” it’s a BLACK HOLE!!! If you’re close enough to catch the first note…you’re sucked-in…and there’s NO escape!!! Also, do something different. When bands “evolve,” so does their music. Evolve with them, by reacting to each album in CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER. After you’ve enjoyed the ride of your life…put on some Supertramp!!!
They never made a bad song, but Brad and Lex do need to hear at least "My Old School" before they move on. The conga drums were being played by Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, whom I got to meet and talk to over a couple drinks. When Steely Dan stopped touring he decided to move on to the Doobie Brothers.
@@fordp69 “Can’t Buy A Thrill,” came out in Nov. 1972. I bought the cassette tape a few months later and wore it out my Senior year of High School (‘73) and STILL listen to it on my iPhone 13 Pro Max, today!!! (Musically, the 70’s can’t be beat…as you well know.)
I'm a big fan of their music. But i can't choose which song i have to advice first to someone who doesn't know Steely Dan. It's too hard. Maybe Black Cow or FM.
@@guyelmouchnino6531 That’s tough. There’s no right answer. What is your friend’s favorite instrument? If it’s the saxophone…”FM” would be a good choice. If it’s the jazz guitar, Larry Charlton is featured on “Black Cow.” My introduction to Steely Dan was in early 1973 and “Reelin’ in the Years,” got me hooked. “Deacon Blues,” would be my other jazz-infused-storytelling-type-recommendation.
Brad & Lex, Steely Dan is a GREAT Group!! You'll love their "Deacon Blues", "Josie", "Aja", "FM" and 20 more!! Their album 'Aja' is so well produced it won a Grammy Award. Steely Dan is: Donald Fagan vocals, keyboards, songwriting, Walter Becker guitars and songwriting. The rest of band is a variety of great session musicians. On this live version David Palmer sang lead. On the album Donald Fagan sings lead.
So many good songs by Steely Dan. Definitely listen to Aja, Reeling in the Years, Bohdisattva, FM, Babylon Sisters, Peg, and Rikki Don't Lose that Number. Incredible production values, and so many different styles of music.
Lex, I can almost guarantee you Steely Dan was/is on your mom's playlist. Great music. I would suggest for Brad to take in the music first with Steely. Good lyrics but it is their sound that makes them so great and unique.
It's people that think like Brad that are cutting out the solos just because no lyrics 😤 The worst one so far is Styx "Come Sail Away" it is missing the keyboard solo, has ruined countless reactions.
I've been waiting for you to discover this great band. No surprise at all Lex was groovin' right from the start. I hope you can react to more Steely Dan real soon, very popular band with SO many great songs.
Steely Dan Are Legendary Music Icons With A HUGE Catalog Of Classic Hits & Well Worth Your Time Exploring..They Are Perfectionists & Other Musicians Have Nothing But Great Respect For Them.
Steely Dan's album Aja is still an absolute gold standard to this day, if you are trying out a new sound system this is one of the great go to albums to put on thanks to incredible production values...and its loaded with incredible tracks as well.
A truly great band! Just two guys really, Donald Fagan and Walter Becker(who is deceased), who always used the best studio and touring musicians to bring their songs to life. So many great songs from Steely Dan that you could spend an entire year just reacting to their catalog.
So many classics! Every time I hear them it reminds me of when I grew up in Reno, NV and the casinos as they played tons of Steely Dan there. FM static, Deacon Blues, My Old School, Rikki Don’t lose that Number, Reelin’ in the Years, Peg…ugh just so many classics
I’ve recently been rediscovering Steely Dan. Rikki Don’t Lose That Number, Josie and FM are so good. I heard them as a kid, but appreciate them so much more now.
Finally some Steely Dan, please continue down this deep rabbit hole. Many great songs to check out, Don't Take Me Alive, Haitian Divorce, Peg, Black Cow, I could go on for days.
The first track on one the best debut albums ever. Can't Buy a Thrill was the first hint of what was to come, a series of wonderful albums that were up there with the very best of contemporary music 🎶
Steely Dan is one of my all time favorite bands. Donald Fagan, and Walter Becker(RIP) knew what sound they were striving for, but once they achieved perfection they would keep adding to the song. They were truly geniuses. They only let the best players play with them back in the day. 👍🏼🔥
Lexi, you are right on target. I should know. 1975 I was 20 years old. Shag carpet everywhere. And get this orange was a popular color. Yes, orange shag carpet. Love you Guys.
Steely Dan was a jazz-fusion band, mixing jazz with rock & pop music & 1972 was in the early jazz-fusion era in music & the music of jazz!! Steely Dan did not tour for the longest time but were popular from the beginning!!
The singer in this video is David Palmer but the voice on the recording is Donald Fagen. Palmer sang lead on a couple other songs on the first album and also sang some of the Fagen songs live because Fagen wasn't confident in the power of his voice in the early years.
Reelin' In The Years is a great followup to this song, then you should check out their later funkier stuff like Peg & Hey Nineteen. With respect to Lex, I think Steely Dan is one group that sounds timeless and relevant even today.
This is the original version with a bit cut off the pre chorus, and a bit cut off the solo ending, over a live version performance from the 70's. Listen to the original version and then listen to all of "The Royal Scam" album, trust me! You might as well do "Reelin In The Years" first.
Steelly Dan were absolute perfectionist in the studio. The production values were amazing and the musicianship was every bit as good. I would like some more, please. You would enjoy discovering how they got their name.
Thanks for getting started on Steely Dan, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker (Walter died 2017 RIP) are world renowned musical geniuses both lyrically and musically, with the finest recording qualities you will ever hear and probably about as popular today as they were in the 70’s!
Brad & Lex, find the original, FULL studio version. This was edited and shortened to cut out the great keyboard solo that immediately followed the first guitar (electric sitar) solo. Steely Dan produced some of the most intoxicating, original music you'll ever listen to, and this was the very first track on their 1972 Can't Buy a Thrill debut album.
It always amazes me when I watch these reaction videos how this younger people have never heard of Steely Dan. Probably the best rock/jazz fusion bands of the 70s and beyond. Then, they listen to their first SD song and are blown away by the musicality and professionalism. Then, they listen to a few more songs and then become huge fans. Do It Again is their first AM radio hit. As their music evolved, it became more mature and polished. Their best album IMHO is Aja. Wonderfully produced and not a bad cut on the album. They say that Steely Dan is your favorite band's favorite band.
You really should find the original versions of this song and fly like an eagle by Steve Miller. The ones you have reacted to are radio edits that are shortened from the original version. But regardless I really enjoy watching you guys. Have a great day!
OMG, Steely Dan's one of my all-time fave bands ever. Such slick smart lyrics and all the instrument solos rock so much! Do more Steely Dan please! thx for sharing Brad & Lex :)
Can't believe this is the first time Steely Dan has been on this channel. Wow, lot's of phenomenal music to get to from Steely Dan. Saw them in concert at least 5 times.
I seen Steely Dan in Atlanta in 2018 shortly after the bands cofounder Walter Becker passed. RIP!! The concert was great but his absence was missed. Such a great band!! Great reaction kids! ✌🏼
When I was little we were staying in the projects with my grandmother in Modesto. Steely Dan and Santana was all over the radio. Memories. Long long ago.
You guys do a great job on these reaction videos! Great song, great group, and great to listen to in the morning. Such a cool singing voice too. Enjoy more Steely Dan!
Just for the record the singer they're showing didn't sing this version, they're showing David Palmer who sang the LIVE version but Donald Fagan is the voice you are hearing.
Steely Dan is a whole rabbit hole.Don't worry about the words their productions are genius.Just so damn Enjoyable."Black Cow," "FM "(No static at all)"."Peg",soooo many.
That solo is originally done on a Coral Sitar - one of their best solos - ever IMHO (steely Dan their whole catalog: Not one bad song!, they're really great)
Steely Dan might actually be the biggest rabbit hole you can fall into. They literally make no bad music. They are so many sounds blended into perfection. They have so many layers to their sound. This is earlier SD. Once you hit The Royal Scam and Aja you've struck pure gold.
Steely dan is monstrous, Their guitar solis are always killers. This is one of many fantastic tunes . "Don't take me alive",, Has maybe the best guitar track,on anything anywhere.

I noticed that too! It was kind of jarring after hearing the original longer version so many times.
Was a sloppy edit too. How could they cut out Fagen’s solo?! 🤦🏻♂️
They just can't admit that they love LOVE this song.

That entire Aja album is awesome.
Amazing all around, but "Deacon Blues" takes it for me. I think it's the darkness of it. Haunting.
@@iDEATH And Black Cow
Anyone want to tell them where the band name came from?
I've always favoured The Royal Scam over Aja but that's just me.
A perfect starting point for Steely Dan. You are in for some top notch playing and song writing as you dig deeper.
"Do it again" by Steely Dan was the first time listener song for most of the Kids back in the day.
I think Reelin' In the Years is probably the most Iconic song by Steely Dan. Probably the most recognizable song and most widely played also.
They definitely have to do "Reelin' in the Years" and "Rikki Don't Lose that Number"
Great song.
Yep. I'd maybe add Hey Nineteen to that.
Far from their best though...
PEG is their best song.
What a great song of theirs to start with!! Love you guys, love Steely Dan! Try Reelin’ In The Years next, enjoy! Cheers! 🔥

So many good songs by Steely Dan. Definitely listen to Aja, Reeling in the Years, Bohdisattva, FM, Babylon Sisters, Peg, and Rikki Don't Lose that Number. Incredible production values, and so many different styles of music.
You forgot Hey, Nineteen
Hey, 19!
You forgot My Old School
Why does no one ever mention Night by Night? By far the Dan’s funkiest track and one of the meanest guitar solos ever
All great additions. Mayve they should do a livestream Steely Dan event. So many songs....
Can't wait for Lex' reactions to Steely Dan. Her imagination to all their sounds will be hysterical.
Perdition:
They will be in your top 5 easily!
Welcome to the "Vortex" that is "Steely Dan"! This rabbit hole has no end. Good news is......it's all 100% awesome.
Steely Dan is one of the greatest Bands ever. Hundreds of hit songs and Albums from the 70s and 80s.
Holy shit !! You just entered steely Dan territory 😁😁😁 they are up there with the top heavies in music
Lex, check out the long (album) version of this song on your own time, it will have you HOOKED! 🔥
- Andy
Yes you have to do the long version it vibes
Steely Dan is all their own vibe.
Yes, this short version is Criminal. Love....
Lex, I can almost guarantee you Steely Dan was/is on your mom's playlist. Great music. I would suggest for Brad to take in the music first with Steely. Good lyrics but it is their sound that makes them so great and unique.
The full version is even better than this! No such thing as a bad song from Steely Dan!
They messed this version up completely. Probably the idiot who put their name on the intro. couldnt even get the initial drop right
It's people that think like Brad that are cutting out the solos just because no lyrics 😤 The worst one so far is Styx "Come Sail Away" it is missing the keyboard solo, has ruined countless reactions.

Steely Dan - Your favorite band's favorite band. And easily in my top 5.
My fav SD is "Don't Take Me Alive". Even after 40 years I still have trouble deciphering these Steely Dan lyrics
Welcome to the Steely Dan rabbit hole, my friends. They are definitely a vibe.
A music group for musicians, this group had the highest standards when it came writing and recording.
Yeah, but that was true of most of the bands back then unlike today.
Steely Dan is a DEEP and wonderful well for you guys keep going back to. All of the songs so far mentioned are worthy of reaction.
“Kid Charlemagne” is a must. Larry Carlton’s guitar solo has been called one of the best in rock history.
plus it tells an awesome story about the guy that introduced California to some of the best LSD ever created!
Steely Dan's album Aja is still an absolute gold standard to this day, if you are trying out a new sound system this is one of the great go to albums to put on thanks to incredible production values...and its loaded with incredible tracks as well.
I actually don't like aja at all. Much prefer their first four albums
Gotta do more Steely. Best band ever other than the Beatles.
A truly great band! Just two guys really, Donald Fagan and Walter Becker(who is deceased), who always used the best studio and touring musicians to bring their songs to life. So many great songs from Steely Dan that you could spend an entire year just reacting to their catalog.

Ooh, So many great songs. Steely Dan is so amazing 👏

Their 1st album; Can't Buy A Thrill is a stonewall classic! Reeling In The Years is a must to review.

“FM (No Static at All)”
