Welcome to the "Vortex" that is "Steely Dan"! This rabbit hole has no end. Good news is......it's all 100% awesome.
Welcome to the Steely Dan rabbit hole, my friends. They are definitely a vibe.
I can just see Lex with those sunglasses and bellbottoms dancing to this. Such a natural gift she has.
You entered next level musicians when you’ve started listening to Steely.
'Kid Charlemagne' is my favorite Steely Dan song...
you just wait, they are next level
Steely Dan was a jazz-fusion band, mixing jazz with rock & pop music & 1972 was in the early jazz-fusion era in music & the music of jazz!! Steely Dan did not tour for the longest time but were popular from the beginning!!
Steely Dan catalog is filled with GREATNESS
Finally some Steely Dan, please continue down this deep rabbit hole. Many great songs to check out, Don't Take Me Alive, Haitian Divorce, Peg, Black Cow, I could go on for days.
Steely Dan is......AMAZINGGGGGGGGGGGGG!
Greatest American band, hands down.
Steely Dan crushed it in the 70’s. Totally cool..
More Steely Dan - can’t go wrong!
Steely Dan is one of the greatest Bands ever. Hundreds of hit songs and Albums from the 70s and 80s.
Just one of the many great, great bands of our time...70's RULE!!!
Becker and Fagen . the two main guys . Lots of darkness in their songs "The Royal Scam " , "Don't Take Me alive " , " Kid Charlemagne " . All REALLY GOOD STUFF !
“Kid Charlemagne” is a must. Larry Carlton’s guitar solo has been called one of the best in rock history.
plus it tells an awesome story about the guy that introduced California to some of the best LSD ever created!
Play all the Steely Dan hits!!!..you won't be disappointed!!
Every time I listen to a Steely Dan song, I regain a lost brain cell.
Next recommended Steely Dan song:
“FM (No Static at All)”
Oh man you guys have got to get into some more Steely Dan, they're definitely one of those stand-out groups of the 70's and they have an enormous catalogue of great music. Don't Take Me Alive would be a good one to do next. Also, I have no idea what version this is but there are large parts edited out, you might want to listen to the original song when you get a chance for the full experience.
I noticed that too! It was kind of jarring after hearing the original longer version so many times.
Was a sloppy edit too. How could they cut out Fagen’s solo?! 🤦🏻♂️
They just can't admit that they love LOVE this song.
I envy you-- to discover Steely Dan for the first time... MAGIC.
Steely Dan’s music catalog isn’t a “rabbit hole,” it’s a BLACK HOLE!!! If you’re close enough to catch the first note…you’re sucked-in…and there’s NO escape!!! Also, do something different. When bands “evolve,” so does their music. Evolve with them, by reacting to each album in CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER. After you’ve enjoyed the ride of your life…put on some Supertramp!!!
They never made a bad song, but Brad and Lex do need to hear at least "My Old School" before they move on. The conga drums were being played by Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, whom I got to meet and talk to over a couple drinks. When Steely Dan stopped touring he decided to move on to the Doobie Brothers.
Yes some supertramp
@@fordp69 “Can’t Buy A Thrill,” came out in Nov. 1972. I bought the cassette tape a few months later and wore it out my Senior year of High School (‘73) and STILL listen to it on my iPhone 13 Pro Max, today!!! (Musically, the 70’s can’t be beat…as you well know.)
I'm a big fan of their music. But i can't choose which song i have to advice first to someone who doesn't know Steely Dan. It's too hard. Maybe Black Cow or FM.
@@guyelmouchnino6531 That’s tough. There’s no right answer. What is your friend’s favorite instrument? If it’s the saxophone…”FM” would be a good choice. If it’s the jazz guitar, Larry Charlton is featured on “Black Cow.” My introduction to Steely Dan was in early 1973 and “Reelin’ in the Years,” got me hooked. “Deacon Blues,” would be my other jazz-infused-storytelling-type-recommendation.
My fav SD is "Don't Take Me Alive". Even after 40 years I still have trouble deciphering these Steely Dan lyrics
The singer in this video is David Palmer but the voice on the recording is Donald Fagen. Palmer sang lead on a couple other songs on the first album and also sang some of the Fagen songs live because Fagen wasn't confident in the power of his voice in the early years.
Holy shit !! You just entered steely Dan territory 😁😁😁 they are up there with the top heavies in music
Finally. You found your way to Steely Dan. Kid Charlemagne is my fave. Check it out. These dudes had TONS of hits. F.M., Hey Nineteen, Reeling in the Years, Deacon Blues, Babylon Sisters, Rikki Don't Lose That Number, East St. Louis Toodle-oo. I can't wait for you to hear them!!!
Steely Dan is a whole rabbit hole.Don't worry about the words their productions are genius.Just so damn Enjoyable."Black Cow," "FM "(No static at all)"."Peg",soooo many.
You got it just right Lex! You can never go wrong with Steely Dan! These guys made musical perfection! Never a bad song! 🌺✌️
When the music is this badass, who cares what they're singing about.
Black Friday, Green Earrings, Peg, Pretzel Logic, etc., etc., etc their entire catalog!
Brad & Lex, Steely Dan is a GREAT Group!! You'll love their "Deacon Blues", "Josie", "Aja", "FM" and 20 more!! Their album 'Aja' is so well produced it won a Grammy Award. Steely Dan is: Donald Fagan vocals, keyboards, songwriting, Walter Becker guitars and songwriting. The rest of band is a variety of great session musicians. On this live version David Palmer sang lead. On the album Donald Fagan sings lead.
That entire Aja album is awesome.
Amazing all around, but "Deacon Blues" takes it for me. I think it's the darkness of it. Haunting.
@@iDEATH And Black Cow
Anyone want to tell them where the band name came from?
I've always favoured The Royal Scam over Aja but that's just me.
I seen Steely Dan in Atlanta in 2018 shortly after the bands cofounder Walter Becker passed. RIP!! The concert was great but his absence was missed. Such a great band!! Great reaction kids! ✌🏼
So many good songs by Steely Dan. Definitely listen to Aja, Reeling in the Years, Bohdisattva, FM, Babylon Sisters, Peg, and Rikki Don't Lose that Number. Incredible production values, and so many different styles of music.
You forgot Hey, Nineteen
Hey, 19!
You forgot My Old School
Why does no one ever mention Night by Night? By far the Dan’s funkiest track and one of the meanest guitar solos ever
All great additions. Mayve they should do a livestream Steely Dan event. So many songs....
Steely Dan you da man this music I used to listen to in my van while i was driven for the man!
Love the way Lex feels the music…enjoys the moments. Brad just looks confused in all the videos.
Not only where they great musicians but they also always had some of the greatest playing with them
Aja is one of the best albums ever produced
Steely Dan is a DEEP and wonderful well for you guys keep going back to. All of the songs so far mentioned are worthy of reaction.
When I was little we were staying in the projects with my grandmother in Modesto. Steely Dan and Santana was all over the radio. Memories. Long long ago.
A music group for musicians, this group had the highest standards when it came writing and recording.
Yeah, but that was true of most of the bands back then unlike today.
A perfect starting point for Steely Dan. You are in for some top notch playing and song writing as you dig deeper.
"Do it again" by Steely Dan was the first time listener song for most of the Kids back in the day.
Lexi, you are right on target. I should know. 1975 I was 20 years old. Shag carpet everywhere. And get this orange was a popular color. Yes, orange shag carpet. Love you Guys.
This band has been around forever. The AJA. Album is filled probably their greatest collection of songs. Love the reactions.
70"s were frickin AWESOME for variety of talented bands! I'm 60 for a frame of reference.
Maybe the best recording artist of all time. 🔥
Thanks for getting started on Steely Dan, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker (Walter died 2017 RIP) are world renowned musical geniuses both lyrically and musically, with the finest recording qualities you will ever hear and probably about as popular today as they were in the 70’s!
Y'all finally got around to Steely Dan. Please do BLACK COW next. Brad will recognize the beat from a huge hip hop track.
Steely Dan are musicians musician's.
"Your band's favourite band".
They're a staple for music schools and Conservatoriums around the western world.
You didn't grow up in the 70's without hearing Steely Dan.
Steely Dan - Your favorite band's favorite band. And easily in my top 5.
Steely Dan displays the highest acheivement of American music.
This and "BLACK COW" are my favorite songs by Steely Dan.
You got a hold of a cut/chopped/short version. The guitar solo and keyboard solos are DEFINITELY something to write home to mom about!
I think Reelin' In the Years is probably the most Iconic song by Steely Dan. Probably the most recognizable song and most widely played also.
They definitely have to do "Reelin' in the Years" and "Rikki Don't Lose that Number"
The guitar playing on Reeling is....[chef's kiss]
Great song.
Yep. I'd maybe add Hey Nineteen to that.
Far from their best though...
Yacht Rock at its finest!!
Greatest band of the 70s, hands down
Alex, how in the heck can you so easily shift into, and feel the vibe of music before you were born? Amazing.
Can't wait for Lex' reactions to Steely Dan. Her imagination to all their sounds will be hysterical.
Perdition:
They will be in your top 5 easily!
Steely Dan is one of my all time favorite bands. Donald Fagan, and Walter Becker(RIP) knew what sound they were striving for, but once they achieved perfection they would keep adding to the song. They were truly geniuses. They only let the best players play with them back in the day. 👍🏼🔥
Steely Dan... Music for the intellectual hippy.
I'm no intellectual, and certainly not a hipster... :D Just enjoy me some jazzy funky pop.
Steely Dan is a stone groove, baby. Just slide in and enjoy their smoothness. Oh yeahhhh.
You have entered into a great band
Most people in their 50s and 60s claim this as their deserted island band
Steely Dan Are Legendary Music Icons With A HUGE Catalog Of Classic Hits & Well Worth Your Time Exploring..They Are Perfectionists & Other Musicians Have Nothing But Great Respect For Them.
This song is a timeless capture of the seventies. Straight Dope!
O man Steely Dan! I lived my teens convinced I would be a suave adult living the 'Deacon Blue' life.
Imo, Steely Dan is one of the most interesting sounding bands in rock. Too many great songs to mention.
I totally agree
Lex, check out the long (album) version of this song on your own time, it will have you HOOKED! 🔥
- Andy
Yes you have to do the long version it vibes
Steely Dan is all their own vibe.
Yes, this short version is Criminal. Love....
Brad & Lex, find the original, FULL studio version. This was edited and shortened to cut out the great keyboard solo that immediately followed the first guitar (electric sitar) solo. Steely Dan produced some of the most intoxicating, original music you'll ever listen to, and this was the very first track on their 1972 Can't Buy a Thrill debut album.
A truly great band! Just two guys really, Donald Fagan and Walter Becker(who is deceased), who always used the best studio and touring musicians to bring their songs to life. So many great songs from Steely Dan that you could spend an entire year just reacting to their catalog.
I was born in the 60s the 70s and 80s and early 90s were the best time in music's history before autotune that's where the music legends were at
You definitely need to catch the full version of this.
Their 1st album; Can't Buy A Thrill is a stonewall classic! Reeling In The Years is a must to review.
My fav. from Steely Dan ...very best...So profound memories ..
Gotta do more Steely. Best band ever other than the Beatles.
It always amazes me when I watch these reaction videos how this younger people have never heard of Steely Dan. Probably the best rock/jazz fusion bands of the 70s and beyond. Then, they listen to their first SD song and are blown away by the musicality and professionalism. Then, they listen to a few more songs and then become huge fans. Do It Again is their first AM radio hit. As their music evolved, it became more mature and polished. Their best album IMHO is Aja. Wonderfully produced and not a bad cut on the album. They say that Steely Dan is your favorite band's favorite band.
Showbiz Kids, is my personal favorite of a lot of great Steely Dan songs
You just can't go wrong with Steely Dan.
You can if you pick a chopped-up amputated version of a truly great song !
Lex, I can almost guarantee you Steely Dan was/is on your mom's playlist. Great music. I would suggest for Brad to take in the music first with Steely. Good lyrics but it is their sound that makes them so great and unique.
you're going to LOVE this band,GOAT.
Lex I love your energy!! I grew up in the 70's. You would have fit right in!! It was a "trip" I will never forget.
We would have Steely Dan nights. Another reason it was great to have lived in the 70's. Left handers, muscle cars, sweet girls and Steely Dan
Every time I’ve had to reset my stereo equipment, receiver, Turntable, new speakers etc. I go to this albume or Aja . Perfect tonality!
This band is so talented and unique. And hit after hit after hit after hit ...
Probably the best studio band of all time. You will enjoy most of their vast hits.
I was sorry to hear people were giving you a hard time. People in their 50's, 60's, and 70's don't get how new this stuff is to you guys. They expect too much. All the best, love your reactions. Cheers
steely dan is an eccentric high...good times and good vibes
She describes these songs the best.!! Shes awesome.!!!.
Listening to this song makes you imagine driving on some desert highway with a bag full of money you got from some guy and instructions not to look in the trunk as you make your way to some lonely airstrip with serious second thoughts but the bottle of booze and some smoke helps you push those thoughts to the back .
Steely Dan's album Aja is still an absolute gold standard to this day, if you are trying out a new sound system this is one of the great go to albums to put on thanks to incredible production values...and its loaded with incredible tracks as well.
I actually don't like aja at all. Much prefer their first four albums
Off their debut album. " Can't Buy A Thrill". Numerous hits in their career!
These guys don't miss.
The great songs to recommend by Steely Dan are endless so I will say just about any Steely Dan song from the 70's.
All the Steely Dan!!! ✨✨✨
Was wating for this. Best produced music ever. Brad will have fun with the lyrics
Steeley Dan...totally great musicians! Great lyrics!!!
Steely Dan have a good 25-30 songs that are a must listen.
I adore "Steely Dan ......My old school....!" its F...ing mega!
Just for the record the singer they're showing didn't sing this version, they're showing David Palmer who sang the LIVE version but Donald Fagan is the voice you are hearing.
Steely dan is monstrous,
Their guitar solis are always killers.
This is one of many fantastic tunes .
"Don't take me alive",,
Has maybe the best guitar track,on anything anywhere.
Bad Ass Musicians in Steely Dan....great catalog of music!!!!
So many hits from this band, and super unique sound. Don't Take Me Alive, Peg, Josie, Babylon Sisters, Deacon Blues, Reeling in the Years....bunches of them
