Yeah, the rabbit hole of boredom, snorting coke on yachts with sleazy yuppies listening to fake jazz and yammering on about the good old days and how much money they’re making. No thanks, but have a good time. Hope you don’t catch VD.
@@bjwnashe5589 I am 62, never snorted coke, never been on a yacht, and certainly not a sleazy yuppy and the music of Steely Dan is my favorite. Guess you got it all wrong Mr. Pessimist. Oh, yes. Your VD comment is crude and speaks volumes about who you truly are. Ken
Steely Dan is one of the few, rare bands that flipped all expectations of what progressive rock is supposed to be. Instead of writing long, epic songs with heavy keyboards and classical influences, they incorporated elements of jazz and melodic pop into a unique musical experience. In addition to their musicianship, they were also meticulous about their production values in the studio, which is why their catalog is revered among audiophiles worldwide. Great reaction! And you're only beginning. The album 'Aja' is a true masterpiece.
Walter Becker and Donald Fagan were known to, once they got a sound in their collective head had actually been known to occasionally spend a whole day of studio time trying to find it. When the day was done, and everybody went home. they called in a whole new group of musicians to come in the next day and see what they could do with it. Unfortunately we lost Walter a few years back but Donald is still playing
First song I ever heard by this group was on the radio, and it was Reelin' In The Years, which I thought was great! It's a good song to listen to, as is Peg. Simple name. Rikki Don't Lose That Number is good, too. Thanks for your usual good choice of songs to try out, and God bless you!
You are right, the beat never changed, but by doing both a sitar solo and an organ solo on top of the beat, it sounds active and moving. This was their very first track on their very first album, and it was a surprise huge hit.
As a teenager in the 70s, Steely Dan was just awesome, and still is!! Timeless, distinctive music, so relevant today. We just don't have this quality of music now, really miss these bands!! Loved listening to this music on my cassette player in my car, especially when driving longer distances to college.
Highly recommended by Steely Dan: Black Cow, Dr Wu, Rikki Don't Lose That Number, FM, Green Earrings, Kid Charlemagne, Peg, West of Hollywood, Aja, Home at Last, Babylon Sisters, Glamour Profession, Don't Take Me Alive, Haitian Divorce, Caves of Altamira, Bad Sneakers, Chain Lightning, Your Gold Teeth, Pretzel Logic, Everything Must Go, Almost Gothic, Lunch With Gina, Your Gold Teeth II, Your Gold Teeth I, Bodhisattva, Only a Fool Would Say that, Reelin in the Years, Pretzel Logic, Time Out of Mind, Hey 19, Jack of Speed, Pixeleen, Razor Boy. You cannot LOSE!
To this day the Aja album is my test music for any speakers or headphones I'm considering. They were such perfectionists that they complained multiple times about the Katy Lied album as they felt the compression on the finished product was "off".
Steely Dan was primarily two guys who used a turnstile of the best of the best studio musicians from album to album, and even song to song. Best drummers, best guitarists, often having several play the part before the selected the best one they liked. Endlessly replaying several takes before mixing. A fusion of jazz and rock with some excellent lyrics.
I got goosebumps just watching ya'll react to this tune...and believe me, it's just the beginning...this is one rabbit hole that you will absolutely LOVE - thanks for the reaction and take care
"Do It Again" by Steely Dan and "The Remembering" by YES inspired me to buy an electric sitar for Christmas one year. I haven't played it in years now...I have tingling in my fingers and can't really feel the strings anymore. My sitar, acoustic guitar, Les Paul, and bass guitar are retired now.
It is not a real sitar. It is a special (6 string) electric guitar created to sound like a sitar made by Danelectro. It is tuned as a "guitar" so it is easy for guitar players to play... vs. A Sitar, which is completely different- in tuning, strings, bridge, everything. Danelectro made electric basses and guitars and was popular in Britain.
Love this reaction ! Been a Steely Dan fan from the first time I heard them . Saw them live once and it was the best !!! Thanks for making me smile . I needed that
A truly iconic song. This one grows on you, and doesn’t let you pull it's roots out of your soul. Amazing thing is, many Steely Dan songs have this affect. This power. You've already received a lot of suggestions for more SD songs to react to. Their "Aja" album is spectacular.
It is nice to see that The Dan's ability to cause spontaneous dancing has not diminished over time. My friends and I had the same reaction the first time around, way back in the day.
Rabbit hole. Certainly one of the best songwriters in pop/jazz/rock history. Donald Fagen ( and Walter) is a legend. Dozens of great songs. Ever heard 'Deacon Blues'? I'm glad you found them, simply one of the best.
I was young , very young when this song came out, and its fantastic watching younger and younger people appreciate real music, made on real musical instruments !
Denny Dias solo on the Sitar! 1972 Indian Sitar music and Transcendental Meditation were the trend in Rock music... Ravi Shankar played at Woodstock in 1969
Their Album "Aja" is considered by many to be one of the greatest albums of all time. It's up there with Led Zep 4 and Boston's first and there is nothing "Rocking" about it. Just a tremendous listening experience. A little jazzy, RnB, some south of the border and rock elements, Pop and their own special "sauce." Take a listen with us.
The second lead section was a keyboard with some reverb and production tricks to give it that sound. Beautiful stuff. Welcome to the long Steely Dan journey.
I always thought of Steely Dan as the first (and arguably the best) jazz-rock fusion band, which definitely was a trend during the '70's and beyond. Jeff Beck, for example, took up the jazz-rock fusion genre (see Blow By Blow and Wired albums).
Midnight Cruiser,Royal Scam, Hatian Divorce and Kid Charlemagne are some of my all time favorites but you can’t go wrong with anything the Dan put out.😎
One of the great bands. This was early in the career. It's good to start with the early stuff and move into the later ones so you can see their growth. They have so many great songs. You should listen to their albums, in whole, to see how every song is masterful.
Thank you two very much. I grew up on Steely Dan and enjoyed your reaction as much as the music. GF rocks! Had a Polish GF whose accent was worth the price of admission. You sound Eastern Euro. I'll be back for more!!
Steely Dan! ❤❤ I remember hearing these songs on the radio for the first time! Hoping they would play it again soon. Watching you react to hearing them it for the First time is cool😉 Late 60’s and 70’s is the best era of music! We’ll never see that explosion of talent and creative musicians ever again. Keep Going You won’t be disappointed!
There singing about the things in life. How people go back and do things again and again, weather its good or bad. I think! Its what i like about 60s, 70s,80s. The songs make you think.
Funny story about Steely Dan. They got their name from a steam powered sex toy featured in a cheesy romance novel called "Naked Lunch" by William S. Burroughs.
For me this is their 2nd best song. First sure is Aja, their stairway to heaven, also one of my favorite songs ever. Looking forward to your reaction of it.
Steely Dan ....great! ....since you mentioned "Banger" ...my Rock and Roll Dictionary has the song "Burn" by Deep Purple (Studio Version) as the definition of a "BANGER!!!!!!!!" Do it....
THE INSTRUMENT IN QUESTION, WAS A ORGAN, WHICH HAS MULTIPLE SWITCHES FOR DIFFERENT SOUNDS. LIKE THERE IS A WHOLE ORCHESTRA AT UR FINGERTIPS, PLUS A SYNTHESIZER. REELIN IN THE YEARS…. IS GREAT SONG TO HEAR. YOU BE ON THE JIVE NOW… ROCK ON 👊🖖
Uh-oh you found Steely Dan! You had better strap yourself in (not too tight if you want to groove to the music) for the ride it is a long and wonderful journey.
Can’t Buy A Thrill is one of the most underrated albums ever. If I was told I could only listen to one album for the rest of my life, it would be this album.
It never ceases to amaze me how hip and cool this song still sounds after 52 years, to every generation.

Steely Dan created their own genre.
Nah, just jazz-inflected rock.
YAAAAH 70s SMOOOOOOTH
@@DJ-bj8kuJazz. R&B, Latin, Eastern, and more. They blended it all.
It’s “intelligent” rock…kinda like Pink Floyd. It’s just not easily duplicated.
Love Carol's chair dancing, do it girl
This is a group that many other groups admire!
I teared up 😢 watching you folks enjoying this groovy masterpiece 😊
“Don’t take me alive”. One of the best intro solos in rock.

The 1970s were a golden cornucopia of musical goodness and Steely Dan produced the most luscious of the fruit
Possibly my favorite guitar solo of all time, and it's not even a guitar. Shout out to Denny Dias on the electric sitar.
Bodhisattva is right up there. Denny and Skunk shredded it.
I believe it’s actually an electric sitar which makes it so distinctive.
He was really blowing doors off with that solo, the Coral Electric sounded great.
