Now we're gettin' somewhere on this here channel! Lol. This cut from '77 still bangs and ain't been nothing else like it. Whole album, Aja, is absolute fire.
The reason this song and the Aja album are so jazzy is because Steely Dan brought in pro session musicians and jazz players like Larry Carlton, Wayne Shorter (of Weather Report), Bernard Purdie, Steve Gadd, Chuck Rainey amongst others to play their songs. A classic session album!

I always thought of a Black Cow as a hangover drink, especially in the context of this song. She's been out all night "running around" and carousing, staggering home in the wee hours. The Black Cow has lots of sugar, ice cream, chocolate, root beer and probably booze. The amazing aspect of Steely Dan is that their music is timeless, always satisfying, and never grows old or stale. 50 years since their first album, they're still selling out venues, and remain the most smokin' hot live band in the business.
Actually, it's very innocent. Fagen wrote this in the setting of a 50's ice cream, or soda shoppe. The relationship described is, of course, not innocent.

A big black cow was ice cream mixed with Cola. Like a root beer float, but it was a diner thing that has multiple versions depending on where you got it.

The beautiful piano (Fender Rhodes) in "Black Cow" was played by Victor Feldman. He recorded with many jazz greats, including Benny Goodman, George Shearing, Cannonball Adderley, and Miles Davis, most notably on Davis' 1963 album Seven Steps to Heaven, the title tune composed by Feldman and Davis. Miles Davis invited Feldman to join his group full-time, but Feldman declined, preferring session work to the career of a touring musician, such as working in the studio with Steely Dan, Frank Zappa, and others.

Welcome aboard! Gaucho and Aja are my two favorite Steely Dan albums. Real musicians use to make such great music. It's such a shame that radio stations play so much computerized music now days.
A Black Cow is soda pop with ice cream. Here in Australia we often threw some rum in it, which occasionally made it a rowdy cow. 🙂 Victor Feldman never received enough credit for his performances on this album.
It was awesome for me to stumble upon your site where you all are listening to artists that I grew up with, but for YOU, were first-time events for doing so. Watching along with you brought me a GREAT amount of joy for several reasons. Seeing a new generation of listeners taking the time to do so, well, OMG...it was like sharing these tunes with friends for THEIR first time. It made me laugh and often brought me to tears to hear how you appreciate these classic tunes as much as I. I only wish "I" had been able to be the one who turned you on to them in the first place. :-) With each tune you watch, I feel like I am experiencing them WITH you. Thank you so much! I know there are many people who are doing this, but there are only two sites I enjoy watching, yours being one of only two. Love your reviews, guys.
As you listen to more and more Steely Dan, you will recognize more and more of their songs that have been sampled. They are one of the most sampled bands.
The keyboard is a Fender Rhodes electric piano. It was played on the record by Victor Feldman, a British pianist, vibes player and drummer who came to the States in the late 50s and stayed based in LA playing jazz gigs and doing lucrative session work. He was also in Miles Davis's band for a while in the 60s.

The late Paul Humphrey's super tight drumming, and the incomparible Chuck Rainey on bass really makes this cut great. You are listening to the cream of the session boyz, the best of the best. My #1 all time album followed by another must listen, Steely Dan's, "The Royal Scam".
you need to react to their song “Show Biz Kids”. Very different lyrics and music, they were a very versatile group you could count on them to do a little bit of everything and even something different
Wow guys! You are right about the funk, jazz, R&B!! The album is an absolute master piece! I grew up listening to them...still my favorite group after all these years. I always felt so sophisticated listening to their music when I was young. The production was flawless and incredibly stands up to anything that has come out in the recent past
You two have many more Steely Dan songs to react to that I'm sure you'll love. As you've been told, Aja, the album, is fire. As is Royal Scam and Gaucho. All their other albums are filled with great music, but the three aforementioned are considered, by most people that I know, to be the best. Truly dive deep with this one of a kind, generational dynamic duo of Walter Becker, RIP, and Lead singer Donald Fagen. I love your reactions and can't wait to see you check out more Steely Dan. The more SD you listen to, the more samples you'll hear. Peace

This is from the groundbreaking jazz-rock album, Aja. It produced three singles, Peg, Josie, and Deacon Blues. All of the songs are as good as the singles. All 7 songs are winners and the title song is my personal favorite, but you have to realize this is going to be a different sophisticated jazzy sound. It is basically rotating hand-picked accomplished studio musicians and back-up singers with Donald Fagan and Walter Becker. It is a very highly rated and respected album and nothing else sounds like it.
This is my favorite Steely Dan song. The drink is an adult root beer float. Very 70s. My dad's chainsmoking aunt used to drink these. A lot. It reminds me of her. Visiting on Sundays in the 70s. In her polyester outfits, cig in one hand. Drink in the other. Telling the most obscene jokes.

Explore them further. So much more to offer. Good stuff.
when I was a kid there was a chocolate milk brand called “black cow” also I think there’s an alcoholic version of “black cow” ...
Welcome aboard! Gaucho and Aja are my two favorite Steely Dan albums. Real musicians use to make such great music. It's such a shame that radio stations play so much computerized music now days.
I suppose every SD fan will have their favourite albums, mine are Pretzel Logic (one of my favourite albums of all time) and The Royal Scam.
A Black Cow is soda pop with ice cream. Here in Australia we often threw some rum in it, which occasionally made it a rowdy cow. 🙂 Victor Feldman never received enough credit for his performances on this album.
a float is soda + ice cream
to be a black cow it HAS to have rum in it..
Steely dan produced hundreds of different versions of cool in their music. Every song is quite different but always on ice.
The rap song Uptown baby song sampled Black Cow.
PEG! PEGPEG!PEEEEEEG! Groove fest soon good please 😁😁😁💙💙💙💙
You guys are awesome.
I'm so happy you dig the Dan of Steel ! Renewed my faith.
Thanks again!
Bad ass arrangement and tune....Steely Dan are the best...Check some Midnight Cruiser...and many others....great , deep catalog
heard this album the night before it was released on Q-fm 96 in columbus, ohio and was mesmerized...still am....one 0f the 70's top albums and a samplers dream...appreciate you guys,Kent in ohio
Believe this song was about the porn industry....
They have a bunch of great songs FM no static at all pretzel logic peg etc.
BJ and Asia, your impression of Steely Dan's sound is accurate: a blend of rock, jazz, funk, blues and R&B.
Peace
What is a black cow drink made of?
Combine 1/2 cup of evaporated milk with 2 cups of root beer (your choice on the brand but we used A&W Root Beer for this particular one) and 2 ounces of your favorite bourbon. Mix then split between two tall cocktail glasses. Add ice to fill the glass. Drizzle chocolate sauce on the top
yeah Black Cow is a drink, prob upscale bars.
not where i was bartender;
in 6 years of mixing drinks i had 1 customer order a cream drink!
love this album, put it on and relax...
would also make good background music.
I had the pleasure of hearing this album before it was released in 1977, it was in our high school band room, Josh Feldman was a friend of mine and his dad the late Victor Feldman played the Fender Rhodes solo on Black Cow I don’t think anyone knew how cool that was. Shortly before he passed he came to visit me at a gig and he shared programming charts with me for our common synthesizers. Steely Dan is still my favorite band to this day.

AJA - One of the greatest albums ever ! Seventies very creative decade .
Steely Dan music royalty .
Larry Carlton playing bluesy guitar
( Larry played

🏆🙋♂️🎷
Yes it is a real drink!!! Have y’all ever heard their song deacon blue? It’s really nice!
You got it when you talked about how you liked how it's put together. The album Aja won a grammy in 1978 for the best engineered album. It had over 40 different musicians playing on it from many different genres, with many of them jazz musicians.
Steely Dan is a one of a kind. They weaved really great songs using multiple musical styles.
There was such great music growing up, of every genre. Very glad you two enjoyed it!
It’s sampled in gas drawls by mf doom i knew i recognised it I had to search for the right song
The Black Cow: Kahlua, Coca-Cola and Cream ....... Popular with coke heads back in the 80's .........

I'm 71 years old, grew up listen to Steely Day. They were a mixture of jazz and rock. The music of the 70s was the best.
Black Cow is such a perfect “mood piece” of a song…it’s a song that lets you sit back with the music while it takes you on a story.
They were just soooo good. They had so many great songs. Love Steely Dan
with great bands, sometimes you hear their hits so much you don't really play them no more, like stairway...but I never got tired of this song for some reason, it's like the breeze by skynard...it just never gets old for me
As sampled by Lord Tariq-Peter Gunz. , MF DOOM
First cut of the lp. You really should listen to Aja all the way through. Classic and classy.

I think when BJ talks about a "Charlie Brown Keyboard" he's talking about the sound of a Rhodes Electric Piano! You should listen to more Steely Dan, they are all over the place. I personally suggest "Night By Night" or "Babylon Sisters", or "Kid Charlemagne", "Green Earrings". all absolute classics. Can't go wrong with Steely Dan
Hard to pick a favorite from the glorious Steely Dan catalogue, but this would definitely be top ten.
I totally agree. I can't resist naming a few of mine 😏
My Old School
Pretzel Logic
Caves of Altamira
Through with Buzz
I Got the News
Doctor Wu
Change of the Guard
Plenty more of course, but they are just some of my favourites.
You just listened to a stunning track from one of the best albums ever made by any group any where anytime!! You must listen to the whole album!!
Black cow was a very popular drink in the 70…a sweet cocktail. Steely Dan was also known to tell a story with their music…It still sound good after all these years.
My favourite band among many favourites, and I’m a Brit where we have tons of choice.
This rabbit hole is deep and rich with quality.
YES!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤thank youuuuuuu for reacting to my favorite steely Dan song!!!!
Love it! More Steely Dan please! 😎💖
They use the Hammond B2 and the Rhodes organs. Classic.
This album and SD is one of the great highlights in my music listening and it’s so cool to see you guys hit it for the first time! I can’t imagine…
Steely Dan lead men Donald Fagen and the late Walter Becker. have been eating off this song and collecting royalties for over 45 years from 1977 / 2022 now that is impressive, how many of todays, rappers & singers will be living off the royalties from there music 45 years from now in the year 2067.
Huge Steely Dan fan!!!🤘🏾
Funky bluesy rocky and a touch of reggae from time to time...
"Glamour Profession" is perhaps the dopest of them all!! It's tha 1 🏌🏾♂️⛳️
