Thanks!!!
I personally never use strings, they slow down my picking technique.
Good idea. This also reduces string noise when recording.
@@icaanul And you don't risk breaking a string during live shows.
Good thinking, and as a bonus you don't wear your picks!
That's a good one.
Sound logic! I’m going with that next gig! Thanks! 😂🎉
I remember getting into it once with a guy that said EVH never used any effects at all. He was adamant. And in the message thread everybody was agreeing with him. I just had to grit my teeth.
I don’t know about “never” but I’ve seen interviews where he kind of implies that. I think he was referring more to delay and such as opposed to a phaser or chorus pedal. I can’t find the videos now, unfortunately.
Just always remember that most people are below average intelligence.
Hahaha that's why he has signature pedals right
@rapid13 , I mean, there are times Eddie quite clearly has used Delay at times. Context matters.
@@rapid13
EVH used Wah, Chorus, Flanger and Phaser. I saw a photo from the 2012 tour, he was using a Boss OC-3, MXR Analog Chorus in place of his 5150 Chorus.
He kept a phaser, flanger and delay, as pretty regular, throughout his career.
I wouldn’t be surprise if he had a lot of songs, that didn’t use an effect during the live performance though.
Your one of the few creators that is fun to watch and never comes off as pretentious. You have mad skills and share the knowledge! Much appreciated
there was no error in his slash statements. Read the whole transcript of what he says and his response to the other guitar player in GnR who raised the fuss in the first place. He was not saying slash could not play the parts. As usual people take things out of context, etc. He has nothing to apologize for.
Yet he apologised and admitted just how monumentally dumb his original comment was. As for him being not being wrong, the guy who did the gig Nuno said Slash would struggle with called him out and I can think of no-one better placed to know. Nuno insulted a guitarist who's body of work is leagues ahead of his own and spat the dummy when he got called out on his stupidity. The reason we've had just 2 albums from Extreme in the last 28 years is because they were never actually any good and apart from one half-decent ballad they never had any decent tunes. Nuno is obviously a far better technical guitarist that Slash but as a songwriter and creator he's not in the same universe because his music fails to connect with people, with the exception of More Than Words. Nuno is also a far better guitarist than my personal favourite David Gilmour but only one of them will be remembered, along with their music, for eternity and it sure ain't Nuno. He should do the world a favour and go back to pimping himself out to a pop princess.
@@mathewjones8886 sounds like you got a slight hate boner for Nuno, a 2 incher. chill out dude, if you think he isn't a great songwriter i invite you to listen to extreme's 3 sides to every story album, their masterpiece
The big lesson here is that if you hear something that doesn't sound right, find the source. I am glad you did that.
Thank heavens! That makes so much sense! I didn’t think it was possible that he’d say he never used delay on Bumblebee. With the new song, you can see him striking a lot more notes.
However, all Nuno theories aside, we are still all crazy and confused - and if we know it, then that’s a healthy crazy!😂
Whew! Yeah I'm relieved as well. I really look up to Mr. Bettencourt, he motivates me to practice more. 🎸
One of the reasons I love this channel is you don't pander at the end of each one asking the view to like and subscribe. It especially drives me nuts when they say smash that like button. If your content is good, I will like and subscribe, not because you tell me to. You're doing a great job, Mike, and that's why I subscribed years ago. Love seeing your sub #s climb. You deserve it.
It's great to watch your genuine reaction, progress along the way and honestly admit your little mistake that majority will think that same way.
Just like the latest Rick Beato's video with John Petrucci, Tosin Abasi and Devin Townsend.
They try to emulate what they hear on the record but ending up making almost the same sound with different technique.
At the end, that "wrong technique" becomes their new vocabulary.
Your honest reaction really inspiring.
GOOD video, dude. It is good to have people like you clear up the BS that gets pushed through to the masses.
I appreciate how Rick Beato always gets to ask the burning questions the fans have.
Congrats on 817k Subscribers! 🤘🏻🔥 I do love the sound of delay, but ghost hammer on sounds pretty cool. Awesome video, love finding out these little details. I actually watched that interview he did with Rick Beato, don't remember that part at all haha 😅.
Nuno never denied using delay for bumblebee. He explains the delay settings every time someone asks. And he doesn’t use the delay on Rise. It’s unison notes on adjacent strings.
This.
Fame is getting to him. He didn't walk back what he said about Slash, or how incredibly disrespectful he was to Richard. He blamed journalists for it. It was their fault for asking the questions and he'll now only answer questions about the things he wants to talk about.
You are simply the kindest person!
I can personally confirm that Nuno uses the dotted 8th note delay trick because he and I discussed it backstage at The Roxy in Hollywood right around the time Extreme’s 1st album came out. I was in a band myself and dating the DJ who was interviewing them before the show. Super nice guy - he and I mostly nerded-out over how much we both loved Randy Rhoads.
In the same interview with Beato he says he uses chorus and delay in some solos at 5:28, Also I understand people losing their shit over the "ghost hammers" on Rise, but isn't it the same technique he used on Li'l Jack Horny 30 years ago, both sections sounds very similar to me, albeit a bit slower on Rise.
Same technique, also on Peace Maker Die and parts of Midnight Express.
[citation needed]. This is why when people on the Internet tell you things you should always ask for the source and check it out yourself, rather than taking them at their word.
The parts Nuno does in Extremes song play with me are so insane! && Apparently he's so mind blowing he doesn't even always need effects pedals to do effects. Lol
Figures I get a Minnesota advert. I like these quick videos tho. I hope you do more of em. If it’s five minutes I’m way more susceptible haha
Yeah watching that whole interview with him and Beato is a good time. I love Nuno, but to be honest... the new album is not very inventive and the song writing is very blah. A few parts here and there are interesting but overall I don't know why they don't put more effort into making top quality song writing anymore. Does age really kill your creativity that much? Just disappointing. Anyone else feel that way about the new album?
Awesome to see you covering Extreme stuff!!! Great band!
I misunderstood his comment about “bumblebee” the first time I watched the Beato video. I must not have been the only one as made evident by these comments. Thank you for the clarification.
Whatever he does or uses, it sounds great.
I remember a transcription in a guitar magazine that tabbed out "Flight of the Wounded Bumblebee" without delay that drove me crazy. It was absolutely impossible.
Never doubt the Nuno! 😀
Nuno was using that crazy "Rise" ghost hammer/muted pattern even on the first album on songs like
Flesh & Blood.
On the second album you hear it right before the tapped arpeggios on "He-man woman hater."
He also uses it in Peacemaker Die on "3 Sides..."
I get why people would want to know if any effects peddle was used but the people who feel betrayed by the thought of this guy using effects confuses me. Why does it matter if the guy uses delays? It still sounds pretty cool and original.
It’s almost like people care more about how a person plays, rather than what they play.
It’s cause they can’t play like that. There’s two types of guitar players. Those who play and those who are obsessed with gear. They spend 14 hours a day obsessing over gear, specs and numbers and play guitar once a week. They typically own 10+ guitars but the funny thing is they can only play one at a time!!!
I liked your analysis, i was kinda confused myself haha, thanks
Love your channel. Greetings from the Iron Range in Northern Minnesota!
I can see the confusion about the delay thing. He first says no delay on Rise solo (answering Rick's question), then says he used delay on Bumblebee, but then I guess he goes back to the Rise solo question (without mentioning Rise again) saying that people were accusing him of using delay on it.
Does anyone remember the infamous Dave Whitehill tab of "He-Man Woman Hater" from the January 1991 issue of Guitar School Magazine? ... Dave tabbed the whole thing out as if Nuno hadn't used a delay pedal :)
Well played brother. 👍
So for the first part he was taken out of context. Big shock. I don’t know if that’s the oldest trick for an interview but it’s probably the dirtiest and most used one today.
Maybe his delay source is front end processing and not in his amp chain? Same for studio, records dry and processed after.
Love this kinda video 🤘
Mike is just a nice dude. This video is, basically, a "stop sending me stuff about this, damnit!" video and he does it in a "hey, check this out, isn't this cool" sort of way.
Gotta love Nuno. Great vid Mike.
I wonder if Nuno realizes the delay makes it sound like there are double the amount of picked notes. He is calling it a slap back delay or discrete delay but I think in his mind it is only the slap and not cheating to sound like more notes. So he doesn’t even realize that when guitarists hear it, it sounds impossible. He’s just doing his thing
A lot of old school players would use slapback to similar ends back in the 50s
Where some people might view it as cheating, Nuno probably thinks of it as a classic old party trick
I am confused about something. Are "dotted 8th" and "slap back" interchangable terms?
Yes.
Yes and No. "Slap back" is generally credited as an invention of Sam Phillips of Sun Records. They fed the tape playback of the vocal track back into the console, so the delay itself was determined by the tape speed and distance between record and playback heads on their tape machines. It was one quick repeat, usually at a volume lower than the main track. This is why multi delay pedals have a different setting for "slapback" and "dotted 8th". If they were truly interchangeable terms, you wouldn't need two settings. Imagine a pedal that has a setting for "drip" and another for "spring". Makes no sense. Staying on pedals/algorithms, if there is no tap tempo or dotted 8th setting, you cannot use that particular piece of gear for dotted 8th, but you can use almost any such piece of gear for slap back as it is one quick repeat. Dotted 8th is note that is equal to three sixteenth notes The dotted eighth note creates a pattern that feels like 3-against-2, which seems as though it overlaps2. By virtue of this fact it is not also a slapback. BUT with some gear you could conceivably set a dotted 8th to not repeat, basically cutting off the trails that make it a dotted 8th, in order to "hack" it to make a slapback effect. But I have never seen anyone do this because it required extra and unnecessary steps as you can achieve slapback without using a dotted 8th setting at all. So no, they aren't the same thing but they can be used that way depending on tempo and settings, but again I have never seen anyone uses a dotted 8th setting to achieve slap back. Try playing Nuno's Bumble Bee with a dotted 8th. It would be chaotic or at best sound more like The Edge than Nuno.
When I was listening to him speak, he seemed to be talking more about use of fx in the studio (though said things were added in post). He obviously uses/used things live like the GT6, OC2, Phase100 and Ratt.
I swear. The Internet has done nothing but give idiots a platform to talk about things they have no idea about. Let this be a lesson to you that the next time some idiot on the Internet tells you something is fact, that most likely they are mistaken, lying or just a complete moron that has difficulty paying attention to what someone actually says. The interview he did with Rick Beato was awesome by the way. I’ve watched it a few times.
He also said do NOT use anything while recording- add effects after recording the raw amp…
BTW YOU CAN PLAY WOUNDED BUMBLEBEE WITH NO DELAY. just use sweeping between adjacent strings.
Btw, what’s wrong with commenting on some other mega-stars’ playing. We have freedom of speech and Slash can handle/ignore it all.
Oh, it’s that easy? Okay. 🤣
“Somebody was asking me if uh like bumblebee I use a delay to make it”
So somebody was asking if he uses a delay in bumblebee? I Don’t hear where he confirms or denies if he does or doesn’t use a delay…
There is definitely some sort of effect on the end part of the Rise solo besides the phaser. It almost sounds like he overdubbed the delay trick on another track or he used a pitch shifter an octave above and they are mixing it in with the other track. You can CLEARLY hear something there.
Guitar collection video pls!!!
At times, Nuno overtly embraces delay. Am I Ever Going To Change anyone...? A highlight of the live set I saw them do a couple of weeks ago in Sydney.
There is an octave divider on the solo for Rise as well.
Hi friend! What configuration do you use in the delay of the flights of the bumblebee?
His response to Fortus was extremely salty and disrespectful. I think you should read it over.
I was 2nd row, right in front of Nuno, on the Pornograffiti tour in Sunrise Florida and payed extra close attention to him during Flight OTWB. There is no way there is no delay
on that. So I called a buddy who use to do sound at a club in Boston when Extreme was gaining popularity. Nuno had his rig in a sealed case with just the cables going in
and out. Everything was midi and Nuno's guitar tech controlled everything from his mixer or board. Nuno had nothing but a wah in front of him. Every change or added
effect was done by the tech through the entire set list. That's what I was told. He said the sealed case was because Nuno had his sound so dialed in that he refused to
take a chance of anyone or anything moving a single knob even a fraction of a cm.
I have a photo of Nuno and his rig in a guitar world advert he had not 1 delay but 2 boss digital delay pedals in the early 90s so he definetly used 2 boss delay's set to different settings,I will try to find my old magazine I think it was 92 or 93 on one of the back pages in the magazine I will post the pic up when I find it,I think if I am not mistaken he also used 2 ADA valve pre amps in that time & possibly Randall amp heads, this is from the 90's I am thinking back from but I know for sure he used 2 boss digital delay pedals set as delay 1 & delay 2
He used delay for Bumblebee but not for Optimus Prime
Well, no, he does a "Delay, delay?". He often has said he doesn't use pedals, but then kind of clarifies that he doesn't count delay, reverb. Things that could be added at the board, a/o post-production. Nothing WRONG with those things, at all. They are the norm, just a bit of hair-splitting.
The people were stupid. Nuno always said he used a delay in flight of the….
Also, I’ve seen him using pedals,,,and you can look up his pedalboard online….
I absolutely love that guitar.
How could someone use a Quadraverb that is missing the broken Samsung DVD player?! I don't know. Namastè. 🗨😉📀
Ona completely somewhat unrelated note, can you break down slash’s cover of Amit Talkin Bout Love when velvet revolver performed it live at the RRHOF? Slash is playing that riff at the fifth fret and I have no idea how.
The person who transcribed the Pornograffiti album said he thought there was a delay on Bumblebee but when he contacted Nuno's management they said they asked him and he said he did not use delay. That is why the transcription was written the way it was. I think Nuno didn't like the idea of people being spoon fed, at least he has said something similar before.
Couldn't resist a Play With Me gag? haha
Art loves some Nuno
I have never heard of nuno before the slash incident, so when I read abt what he said I went “who tf does this guy think he is?”
I respect the hell outta nuno for taking back what he said and apologizing, along with being a badass fuckin guitarist
It's not a secret that Slash isn't a very technically proficient guitarist. They call it "feel" and "soul." Technically, he's not great but he's good for what he does. He is one of those "feel" guitarists. And there's nothing wrong with that. Not everything has to be technically amazing. Only guitarists care about that sht. Technical guitar players are a dime a dozen on youtube. The average listener doesn't give a sht.
@@icaanulI’ve often said that Slash is simultaneously one of the most overrated guitarist by people that don’t play and one of the most underrated by people that do.
Well, I don't even use a guitar when I perform. It is all suggestive and subliminal. How every good a guitarist I am is totally based on what the audience thinks. 😜
I only use guitars for practicing proper arm, hand and finger placement. 😁
Its an open string hammer-on trick played super fast. Its part of his unique technique
I've been playing for about 20 years, but never learned to play right, never practiced much and never got that good. I'm either an advanced beginner, or awful intermediate. Are there lessons on your site that would be right for me? My end goal is to be able to play the tornado of souls solo
People are just trying to stir stuff up. Nuno has always been open about the delay effect on Bumblebee. Also, his recent exchange with Fortus was silly but he owned up to it and issued an apology, accepting that he was fully in the wrong. Nuno can be emotionally reactive sometimes but he is still a stand-up guy.
When he played that palm muted fast part, I noticed he is only picking a string when it's open, making it look even more complicated. All these notes flying by and he is barely picking the strings.
Leave it to Art to set the record straight!
Just now seeing this video after your other. Lol, ok I'm not the first guy. Yes I know he doesn't use it for Rise for sure but what about Bumble? You are not clear with your answer.
Nuno didn't say he used delay/slap back echo in clip, he appears to repeat the accusation rather than give a statement, could be taken either way
Not really, it’s very clear what he means.
TLDR: I agree with AoG's conclusion but not for the reason he states
You can't use isolated words within a sentence and take them as definitive proof. The fuller context is:
"Somebody was asking me if er...like Bumblebee I use a delay to..."
Up until this part it's ambiguous whether him saying "I use a delay" is repeating the question that people ask him or making a statement of fact.
I think the key phrase is when he continues...
"...to make...it was more of an exercise..."
Which seems to suggest that he did indeed use a delay and that it started off as a practice exercise and sounded cool so it became part of the solo.
People like you are the reason incorrect information like this is spread
320 ms delay. I dont know why they deny it. Even Rick Beato denies this . thats the reason why young guitarists get discouraged. Like how much I practised and never sounded like RR or EVH until I got my hands on a JCM 800. Smoke and mirrors because they know young guys are coming up and dont have access to expensive effects. He uses delay all the TIME.
P.S. they removed my comment on Beatos channel when the song first came out and I suspected dealt on the solo. It sounds like modulation because it is modulation.
Nuno is one of my favourite players and i love Extreme but this Rise solo has been a curse for Nuno. It put him back in thr limelight for good and bad. The no pedals stuff. Thr fortus slash stuff.
What are Ghost Hammer on's?
There are the last echo of the departed spirits of hammers ons past.
I like the use of delay in Pink Floyd's Another Brick In The Wall
Nuno has been playing that ghost hammer sequence from Rise for 30 years. It's not new.
Who says it's "new?"
If you heard Nuno’s interview on Eddie Trunk , while he was writing this solo EVH was in his driveway for a visit with Gary , but Nuno was too busy . I don’t know if Eddie was in driveway I’d drop everything to visit with him
He’s the only one in the room when recording his solos and doesn’t wanna be disturbed, so he kept ignoring the calls from Gary not knowing that EVH was there
Even if he were going whacky and being a jerk, you'd still have to admire his playing 🤷♂️
I was literally just thinking about this.
Yay!
🤦🏼♂️ (the closest emoji I could find to describe having a brain haemorrhage).
It’s funny (sad?) how people misinterpret things so easily.
Nice
Okay are we all just ignore the fact the Nuno clearly has a problem? The man is clearly addicted to getting facelifts. He looks like he's only one procedure away from going full Cenobite.
No, listen to the clip, he just repeats the question
How is it not obvious?
People on the internet in comment sections love to take their own contexts and put their own words into peoples mouths.
I believe he used double negative, so he is saying he did use a delay
Watch any vid at half speed and you can clearly see if someone is using a delay or not
This could be the most exciting 💩I ve ever seen
The telephone game strikes again apparently.
He's always seemed like a level, reasonable dude without a lot of ego going on, been some times he's gotten pissed on stage and had a minor freak out, but that's something I'd see myself doing when it all goes to hell too, plus it has to be 25 or 30 years ago. That's an entire full grown adult's worth of rethinking time.
When's the next Livestream?
There's absolutely nothing new in the Rise solo, can't understand all the hype over it?
Yeh he says he never uses anything then proceeds to talk
About delay and pro cat. Thanks for clearing it up
Studio stuff is different. They add some effects to enhance the sound. Doesn’t mean he adds it himself from pedals. When I play live the sound techs always add stuff to fill it up but I don’t add it myself.
@@TheArtofGuitar true! The value of a good tech!
Great videos and content as always!
All of my favorite guitar players idolize shredders like Nuno, EVH, Vai, Satch, Malmsteen, etc. I hear nothing exciting in any of their music. The people they inspired ended up writing better songs
Because you're young. You've heard 1,000 copy what they did. When they started nobody sounded like them. They were complelty orriginal and changed music. It's like watching old Bob Cousey videos and not being impressed because you've watched LeBron.
He's such a great player but boy, he's got a filthy mouth.
The Rick Beato interview was excellent, as Rick's chats always are.
It’s so cringey man. It’s like a kid pretending the came up with every thing themselves when answering a question or writing an essay for homework. It’s like they have their pride hurt if people think they use effects. Effects and eq are there for tone shaping and everyone uses it, from Nuno to EVH to the producers who mix the album. It doesn’t make them any less of a musician.
He never took his comment back, all he said was the he shouldn’t have said it out loud, he still thinks what he said.
Nuno is from the Azores Islands, he's used to fistfight whales and probably sharks, he doesn't need delay on the Rise solo.
Ya, and I know a bunch of lifters that say they never use steroids. LOL
The thing that bugs me about Nuno is that he's massively talented, but the songs he writes are very boring and predictable. He's also very arrogant.
Also, regarding his solo in "Rise", that technique originated from Tosin Abasi. That's wonderful. It's cool that he learned a technique from Mr. Abasi. We all should learn great techniques from other guitar players. The thing that bugs me is people acting like he created that technique, and Nuno's general arrogance doesn't help me like him.
@sambrockmann, I think you'll find Nuno didn't learn the hammer on trick from Tosin Abasi. Nuno used the same technique on a song called Peacemaker Die on the 3 Sides to Every Story album, which came out in 1993 (but was recorded in 1992). Tosin didn't pick up a guitar until 1995, when he was 12, so Nuno was doing it for at least 3 years before Tobin even started playing. How could he have learned it from Tobin?
It's more likely the other way round, Tobin heard Nuno do it.
