Thanks!!!
How do you still have a zip disk just lying around?
I have one too. Right next to my floppy's and cassette tapes.
He needs a 5” floppy too. I loved those!
No comment. ;)
My dude had an old 1st gen game boy laying around, I mean he has to top it somehow 😂
@@TheArtofGuitar yeah, it’s a reply
These delay tricks are a game changer. So simple yet effective
Mike, this series rocks. Guitar for the Practicing Musician (magazine) both helped and hindered my playing for too many years... thanks for fighting the good fight.
Dude! I had that exact same magazine back in the day (I'm 48) and yeah the transcriptions in that particular magazine were just awful and made me question "Am I just not getting it?" yrs later realised the same thing, been learning the songs wrong from bad tabbing
Keep up the great work, thoroughly enjoy your videos
Regards from Sydney Australia
anybody else pause every time the magazine is on screen and tried to read everything they can?
I just gave away about 100 Guitar Magazines between 1991 and 2001
When you play the tab version it reminds me of Steve Vai's character losing it in the guitar solo competition at the end of the movie Crossroads.
A request: can we get more vids of you just playing cool stuff and showing off/us your technique/abilities? Insanely good and fun to watch. Thanks, Nik
Ha! Ha! I used to read all those magazines too and get tabs from them. Equally as important, I used to have an "A/DA MP-1" Guitar Preamp, I connected that with the "Quadraverb Plus" a classic 80' Reverb and Multiprocessor. Wow! This brings back so many memories! So cool...
Funny thing is...I would call that a extreme tab lol as tabbing the effects is next level
Just the nostalgia. These ads, man. I'm a teenager again.
Congrats on 820K Subscribers! Love this 🤘🏻🔥
I remember that mag. For Guitar For the Practicing Musician , I would see what songs were coming in the next issue and try and learn it to see how close I would be to the transcribed version. A few times I would read a transcription and be like "There is NO WAY that is what they are doing" like that diminished arpeggio and going from the high E string to low E string to continue the pattern AND playing it cleanly. An interesting thing to think about the transcriptions is that they seem to have not necessarily transcribed with performance in mind. More like these are the notes that I hear being played and how I interpret them having been played.
I had the exact same frustration over 30 years ago. I found the trick recently on UA-cam. I don't play guitar anymore but I really want to try again.
The Cartoons on the bottom pages of the tabs are great.
Good eye. I was gonna showcase that but perhaps in a future video. Was like MAD magazine.
Use to get these back in the day....flip the pages and they move....the long lines on the side if I remember correctly....got a few from back in the day.
After seeing this I went looking for a issue from 93 called speed demon, transcriptions of Obituary, sepultura, celtic frost, napalm death, overkill tab and I found it and bought it....thanks!
That excitement was very temporarily😂😂😂
I always love these videos, keep it up! 😁🤘
Ahh dave Whitehill. Amazing ear. Just didnt know the delay trick
Also on a side note. Whitehill akso did scarefied in GW mag in G minor when the track was really in F#min..why? Cause racer x sped up the track just a tad..to work out that album the cents had to be raised in Eb..i forgot the exact number
OMG I DID see a Learn to Burn ad. That was Curt?? Damn I feel bad now.
@@TheArtofGuitarhaha yeah. Good ol curt.. that was his series.. but others worked on it too m. I forgot the story
In a future Guitar School they printed a letter where a guy let them in on the delay trick. He found out by seeing Nuno luve. Back then that would be the only way to find out, short of having Nuno sit with the transcriber. I also remember the riff to He-man Woman Hater tabbed awkwardly as well. Those guys did the best they could. Guitar For the Practicing Musician printed a version the correct way a few months later.
I still have all my old guitar mags including this one
This is amazing, I need to figure out how to play this now!
Did the guy that transcribed the song have to actually perform it too? I would have loved to see him try his version. Hahah
4:25
Sounds like boss music in an 80s video game
Ha, there's a part of this that sounds like the Friday the 13th NES game if you're in the cabin lighting the fireplace.
Great lesson & I have the guitar magazine! Eye opener 😮 👍
I remember that magazine. Way beyond me at that point, but practicing the wrong stuff as exercises did help me get better and made learning stuff from the Passion and Warfare book a bit easier for me. I also learned most of the Pornograffitti book at the time. I'm still playing a lot of that stuff wrong, but I'll go on autopilot sometimes and the stuff I'd been playing for 30 years will just automatically take over from the stuff I'm trying to play correctly if I'm not careful.
I remember GTI, Guitar for ptracing musicians (my favorite mags)
Awsome vid Mike!
Always a good morning to wake up to a new bad tab vid 😊 this one kinda broke my brain a little haha 😅
Looking forward to watching this one ☝️ xxx
Cinderella Long Cold Winter tab book's "Falling Apart At The Seams" brings back bad memories for me.
I still have that issue... I have almost a decade of GW and GFTPM
I learned guitar from total guitar magazine mostly as a kid before mainstream internet
Why is it so funny that the transcriber didn't know Nuno used a Delay? 🤣🤣🤣
I love bad tabs! So frustrating and satisfying at the same time! 😂😂😂
That tab was a nightmare. I was kind of halfway able to play the first part using it, but that string climb made me throw the tab (and almost my guitar) across my dorm room back in the day. Didn't try any farther than that.
I really hope u cover Extreme play with me solo I heard that in bill and Ted ...blew me away
Geingas Khan played that on keyboards
LOVE THIS!!!
8:06 Ok I LOLd for real 😀 Great video! It was indeed a real PITA to try to learn guitar from these old books and magazines
the 8:35 passage is totally like from that Steel Panther song :D
Had that magazine as well back in the day and was like… “what the fuck?”
Great job man!
That was awesome transcribing and playing!
Delay for guitar, octavor for bass… it’s like going black.
Because once you go black…
I wish I still had my guitar magazines. I think about them like a high school girlfriend, which, I guess they kind of were. A couple of issues later someone pointed out the delay trick and noted that the transcription basically lined up timing wise. I wonder if someone played this notation on a keyboard or programmed into a MIDI piano roll....
As soon as I saw the title I wondered if it would be this magazine and...holy smokes! That exact issue was, if I remember correctly, the first guitar magazine I bought when I started playing. Though I got it for the AC/DC article and tab.
I had a magazine that pointed out the delay…probably Guitar for the practicing musician, sine I think they were tied to Hal Leonard or Cherry Lane. I will say, that wrong transcription sounds quite good in itself, just not like the song.
Who hadn't spent a couple of hours only to go around the delay presets with an microphoned amp in the rehearsals?! Namastè.
AHHHH! I remember trying to learn this from this mag. Lasted 10 minutes.
These tabs created a generation of hyper guitarists.
wow I've never been this early to one of your videos hahah
So many bad tabs have made me almost quit guitar and it definitely made me quit learning specific songs… I hate it.
I wonder how many weird/ crazy techniques were created because we learned off those bad tabs? 🤔🤔🤔
Now do the magazine version, with a dotted sixteenth's delay!
You’d think the transcriber would have just assumed the tapped section was overdubbed.
Hey did you ever upgrade your pickups, namely the bridge? I saw your video of why this is your fav guitar and I just bought one very similar but the SLX DX. Love the guitar, makes life so easy on the fretting hand. Just wondering if you upgraded and what you got? I've read in a few different forums that there's no difference sound-wise to the Duncan Distortion they based this on. Also did you upgrade the bridge? You never posted a follow-up video, I checked. lol.
the tabs in that magazine look like they belong in a cacophony song
I thought that these magazines talks with the musicians to work together in those tabs
Hey man, nice video. Can you post the complete bad transcription? I'd like to give a try
can you make a video of the song "love of my life" by Extreme nd emphasize the distorted guitar solo?..i believe it's Brian May but i cant figure it out how he played it..thank you
I define tried playing it. Just another tab I was unhappy with. Nothing seems to beat the listening and understanding the sound
i mean mad props for transcribing every note tho. atleast it was correct in that way :)
can you do guitar shredding video???
It's like Rain by Rob Scallon or Big Sur Moon by Buckethead. The delay makes it sound a lot harder than it is.
what are the settings of your delay?
Mike, I have a video idea for you. Read some of those old Dimebag Darrell, Satriani or Alex Skolnick columns and present the ideas in their historical context and maybe you’ll even find something they got wrong, or if not, explain how far ahead of their time they were etc.
5:15 that lick is that far away from the intro Maiden’s Paschendale
RIP,Metal Edge,Hit Parader...being the same age as old people sucks.
Nice Donnie Darko sticker bro
I got this issue. Bumblebee was an instant disappointment. However Wicked Sensation was somewhat redeeming.
OK I remember this issue and I remember how blown away I was with flight the guys in these magazines are some of the best guitarist there all very good if you worked for guitar world are school magazines you had to be fucking great I use to always get guitar world for dimebad articles he did one for years anyway I never new he used delay that really takes the myth away anyway I fucking learned those licks not as fast but close I thought nuno was insane better then yngvia obviously it's just a myth still I learned those licks there crazy to play
Not gonna lie, but I love what the Book eh Magazin does more. But I would not play it up to speed, cause it sounds great slowed down.
It wasn't until years later I found out he used delay, this was just beyond me. To be honest I struggle with it even with the delay, I find it really hard to get the right timing to drop in and my mind keeps reacting to the delay instead of the played notes.
If you learned to play this as tabbed, at speed, you'd be a god. 😂
The TAB book for Pornograffitti is absolutely horrendous. Outside of playing licks in the completely wrong place, there are whole sections TAB'd in the wrong key. It'd almost be funny had I not paid money for it, and of course wasn't able to learn the song. Oh... and Nuno's N3 (the prototype to the N4) has 24 frets. He plays it in the Get the Funk Out video.
I always skip past the first minute and a half of the song personally. Too chaotic for me. The riff is one of my favorites of Nuno’s though.
I cant say it often enought. Your Jackson is a beauty. ❤ What model is this? A soloist?🤔
Edit i did a quick research. Now i know it 😂
I just wanted to comment to show my appreciation for how Mike's fingers died to make this video 💀
I feel the burn already.
My friend played it without delay up to speed exactly how it sounds. So I guess he killed the challenge
BS
I remember reading a GW interview with Nuno where he talks about this transcription - he says it's really good, but he used a delay....
You need to watch the Rick Beato interview with Nuno at 10:45. He claims he doesn't use a delay for Flight Of... So I had that same exact mag that you have with Angus on the cover back in 90 something. I found it to be wrong too but I had a different mag with the tab and it claimed to use a delay but it seemed not correct either, so I just picked fast kind of like tremolo picking and it sounded more like it. What do you think? Is Nuno lying?
He never says he never used delay on it you misheard it.
He says he uses only a small amount of delay for ambience. I hear his statement as he uses no delay as a instrumental effect. Listen to him say it’s not delay for Bumble exactly at 10:54. He said it’s not. He even goes on to say people are accusing him of using it.
I did a whole video on this. You’re hearing him wrong. He never says that he didn’t use delay on bumblebee.
I still don’t hear it. He says he doesn’t use delay or is he playing a game?
I know it’s weirdly phrased when he says it but listen closely.
05:12 Definitely sounds more Baroque than what Bettencourt was going for... Bach and Vivaldi might've been impressed, though.
Please do a guitar cover of the theme for luigis mansion
You'd think they would have used a seasoned guitarist, that knows what they were doing, to transcribe these songs.
Maybe the artist transcribed the song for the people that don't have a delay pedal on !
The delay is unreal. However I wouldn’t be able to concentrate on the notes I actually need to play with all that delay. I’d screw it up for sure
Wolf Marshall almost made me stop playing 😳
I think Buckethead would pull it off.
I hate guitars with less than 24 frets so much 😂
Gonna be honest, I don't think I could play the correct version 😂
And now the wrong version - with delay🤪
Conclusions... dave mustaine is nuts...
I remember in a magazine interview with Nick Bowcott, Nuno himself said that “Dave got really close” & paid him a compliment on the tab
However he also said about the delay trick
To be fair, we’re spoilt for choice today…Dave and his colleagues were working to deadlines and having to make educated guesses on sometimes indistinct lines
Although I saw some AC/DC tabs by Wolf Marshall and they’re so wrong you wonder what he was on!
I mean, I love Angus’ playing but if I’m working out a line I’d think…what’s the simplest way to do this? Angus would be the first to admit he knows a few dozen chords and the same number of licks
I was going to say the same thing . Deadlines and cassette tapes 🤣🤣🤣
I start to think Nuno is one of the most overrated guitarists of all time. First of all, not a single solo of his impress me, or make me excited, or get chills. Second, according to this video, delay pedal makes it, not Nuno. And the third and final - guitar bloggers obsessed with every fart Nuno makes is beyond my comprehension. I will never understand the hype, I think.
Nuno wasn’t even that good a player 😂😂
Except the dims, the rest is easy even without delay.. (if you are up to some level) but, yeah.. very overrated song, its kinda fraud 😂
Can 'we' stop this already?Talking about FOTWB is getting to be just as annoying and boring as Eruption.
A constant rehashing of the same old same old.
No! 🤣
@@TheArtofGuitar We needed to see this!lol Thankyou!
Let me guess; you go through life saying you "tell it like it is", but really you're just trying to justify being a miserable asshole.
This video series is a lot of fun, and if you don't like it, that's tough.
@TheArtofGuitar thanks man I need to listen to this record.
