Hey guys! Its your good buddy, Uncle Ben Eller, here with a very special installment of Weekend Wankshop in which we do a deep dive into the style of one of my favorite players: Nuno Bettencourt of EXTREME! When i got Extreme II: Pornograffitti, i was blown away by Nuno's awesome fusion of funk, rock, and metal playing styles; i immediately started learning the title track off the album, and trying to figure out what made it sound so funky and cool! It wasn't until years later when i learned how to analyze things harmonically that i understood why his tricks sounded the way they did. And on today's lesson, i'm going to show you all 4 of the most important things i took from this song, and how i apply them to my own playing! You're gonna learn the intervallic, scalar, and chord secrets that make his incredible playing tick, plus how to rip them off and repurpose them in your own playing! Its a hoot AND a holler!
Playing my Cotton Candy Randy Suhr Modern into the Fractal Axe FX III. Don't forget to download the patch on the Patreon page!
Uncle Ben + Nuno = instantly drop anything else i was doing 🤘🏼
Haha that's what happened to me
Add me to that list.
yeah me too
*UPDATE: apparently, a lot of people are hearing me call Lynch and Sabbath “pansies” at **3:12**... I say “bands use”, not an insult to the masters!* Thanks for learning some of Nuno Bettencourt’s trademark funk metal tricks with me! Is there another player you’d like me to break down in a lesson like this? Let me know!
Vito Bratta?
Maybe Akira Takasaki, Harry Cody or Tracii Guns?
@@jazoche would certainly like to see another White Lion solo breakdown of either Lonely Nights, Goin' Home Tonight, or War Song. I'm just glad the man is finally more recognition here.
Yngwie!
Randy Rhoads. A lot has been said on his most excellent lead playing but his clean chord passages/progressions deserve some love too. Thanks Ben 🤘🏻
I saw Extreme live a few years ago, went without knowing much about them at all, friend had a spare ticket. I've seen quite a few bands live, but this is the first time I'd seen a proper virtuoso guitarist live. Nuno's *intimidatingly* good, I was in absolute awe the whole show.
I know the feeling, I saw Guthrie Govan live twice. Both times I couldn’t bring myself to pick up a guitar again for a month.
They're one of the most underappreciated bands for sure
Steve Morse did that to me many years ago.
@@chaunceytuss2349 Guthrie's definitely on the bucket list, whether it's a gig or a class!
That color is blowing my mind
HELLS YEAH! Back when I first started playing guitar (1984), I was all about the solos and building speed and precision and blah, blah, blah... When Nuno and Reb Beach came around I learned the importance of good rhythm playing. Such an important lesson. Great post, Uncle Ben!
Happy weekend to you, Uncle Ben! Thanks for the juicy lesson!
Great content. Great explanation. Awesome applicable ideas. LOVE you Uncle Ben!
Thanks for decoding this. Funk + metal is just so much fun to play!
It's just amazing how you manage to make such awesome videos where you breakdown the licks by the virtuosos...I've learnt so much from every video you have put up...this one is pure gold...my absolute favourite guitarist ever...Nuno...
Such a good lesson...relating the part to the theory and then deriving useful application......thanks
I like how you explain everything quickly but I can still follow your description and your work on the fretboard. And the sound of the guitar doesn't overwhelm your voice or vice versa. That's key for a video like this. Thanks for the quality.
Amazing video thank you!! I love nuno's spirit and it flows right through his craft.
This is the best guitar instructional channel I've found so far. Ben's mixture of instruction and humor hits all the right "notes" (pun intended). I see so many channels that just spew "play the third fret on the 2nd string, followed by the fifth fret on the 1st string". There is none of that here. It's theory presented in a fun and entertaining manner.
I haven't watched Ben for quite a while...sorry Ben. What hits me again immediately is what a superb TEACHER this guy is. Hugely enjoyable and effortless to watch.
One of the best instructional guitar videos I've ever seen. Awesome stuff, Ben!
That guitar looks like it would taste delicious. Like cotton candy.
....framing a paper cut
Or a 711 Slurpy
Thankyou so much for the juicy funky breakdown. I'm stealing it.
Great lesson, it has explained so many things for me --- huge thanks
Marty Friedman and his exotic scales patterns!
great vid as always, lots to think about. and that Suhr looks sick!
Mr. Eller, you are such a good teacher. Always enjoy your lessons!
I know I've only been playing for about 3 years, but I realize by great lessons like this, I know zero about guitar and it just makes me want to learn more, thanks!
I have been struggling for so long to find a practical way to learn theory on the guitar, and I have learned so much from you in just a couple of days. I find myself nodding along with your explanations because it finally makes sense! I love this one because it's not just "how to play like Nuno", it has a solid theory analysis in it so we can learn *why* he does what he does. Awesome.
Good stuff Brother BenTHANKS MAN!
Juicy tone to go along with your juicy chops! Thank you Uncle Ben...
Thanks Uncle Ben for featuring one of my all time faves, Nuno is a beast!
Great stuff, as always! This kind of analysis of the intervals and notes themselves is a gold mine of information, and something I hope you keep doing more of! I fairly recently stopped trying to learn pattern after pattern, and really set myself to learning the note and intervallic makeup of everything I play and practice, letting the patterns happen more in the background. The difference to my understanding of what I'm working on has been HUGE. And I'm learning my keys, chords, and scales much better all over the neck (as well as simply learning the notes of the fretboard much, much better).
Great lesson - many thanks!!
Awesome video man, I love Nuno's sounds, he's an absolute musical genius. Keep up the awesome vids!
Excellent Ben, merci pour ces Riff d'enfer !
Great lesson and, omg, what a beautiful guitar!!!
great vid. breaking it down simply and easy to understand. Thamks!
It blows me away when I see people hitting the thumbs-down review option on Uncle Ben. What do you think you’re getting when you tune into Weekend Wankshop? What’s the matter, FREE guitar lessons from a talented badass not good enough for you? I hope your stepkids are all stealing from you while their mom is busy making up excuses not to sleep with you anymore.
The dislikes are from people who can't be bothered to put in the practice time, or who are jealous that Uncle Ben can make a living doing what he's passionate about.
Are you okay buddy?
Love your videos and deadpan humor. ;-)
I used to just be a drummer and could never put my finger on why Nuno sounded so incredibly unique, but this has helped me understand a little about his style.
Great paint job and awesome video.
Awesome lesson, Uncle Ben! Reb Beach and Nuno's rhythm playing were major influences for me! People often overlook their rhythm playing, which was just as genius (if not more) than their shredding capabilities!
Really like the way you break things down and explain. Nice chops too! Thanks!
Your breakdowns, explanations, and chops are amazing !!
Absolutely.
Fantastic lesson! Thank you!!
I lived 2 mins from his family in Hudson , MA .... He signed my 4 string Dean guitar (that sealed my fate as a rhythm guitarist forever) but its a memory ill never forget.
Amazing lesson. I don't know whether Ben realizes how thoroughly he instructs within these videos; clear, precise explanations that integrate a very "light" touch of practically applied theory, while simultaneously injecting his own brand of dry humor. What more could anyone want?
Rick Nolletti why thank you!!!
Really good lesson. Subscribed🤟
Thank you very much! Everything is clear and understandable.
Superb lesson!!
omg that suhr is beautiful
Kasper Fauerby nope, this was a prototype from Suhr!
Kasper Fauerby correct! This is the only swirl I didn’t do.
Ben Eller uncle Ben can you show us how you swirl your guitars !?
Ben Eller They should really release this one. I’d buy it and honestly like it better than the 80s ones they did a few years ago.
Awesome video. Thank you, subscribed
Years of tasty knowledge given away and explained perfectly in a few minutes respect and many thanks
Uncle Ben and Nuno: a perfect recipe! More please!
Ben I've been playing since 1974, all my life I struggled to find ways to learn "mo ....better. Many of your concepts I am familiar with but you explain them much better than any other book, video, tab or teacher I have ever seen. I can not explain how but these concepts I struggled understanding when I first looked at them years ago are so simple when you explain them. For me it's the little things you flush out that make a big difference
Don't forget Blues Saraceno.. he master this funky damn thing!!
Great lesson!!! You had me at Nuno!! 🐐
Hi Ben, great lesson! You really brought out the essence of a funky metal guitar 🤘!
One of the best ones you've done for me man! I have been as you say firing with the minor triad thing in my playing for that last few months ( not knowing why it works) now i know.
Uncle Ben is a vapor! .... nice collection of RDA's in the background
great lesson as usual
Great use of the word "lilt". Great video, great teaching. Really useful stuff. Thanks!
Nice job Ben.
This is my first time catching one of your videos. You explain things so very well. Great job.
Thank you Ben!
Awesome break down... My head is spinning...! Nuno ROCK'S!!
And I just sold my N2 a month ago.......bummer. Great video. Thanks!
Thanks, Ben! 👍✨
I cannot.love this enough Ben.
Amazing lesson Ben
That's a very 80's looking guitar.
Badass
Great lesson and that Suhr is on point!
Lovely tone you have there sir :)
great teaching
Thanks for the recommending Mark Lettieri. That was exactly the sound I've been looking for, FUNKY AF
This was well done.
I like how you point out the various intervals and their relationship to the root chord
This is so cool , I’m going to have to study it a few times , good job I’m signed up at starving stepkid level for the backing and tabs
God damn Uncle Ben is amazing
Really liked your theory analysis in this lesson. I like how you went over it slowly so it was easy to follow.
Great lesson
Awesome, Brother 🤘.
not sure why anyone would give a thumbs down. This is a great lesson.
Sick guitar, Uncle Ben! 🎸🔥
i'm not a guitarist ( i play bass though and love extreme) dude, great video! your approach to teaching is so engaging. thanks for the recommendation of mark lettieri too. bought both albums immediately upon hearing samples...
Nice one!
Amazing funk lesson
Thanks so much
Van Halen and Nuno also didn’t just used the power chords but also included the high strings at the end of a riff, which made it sound so good and refreshing.
I know this is an older video but wow! Lightbulbs started going off after watching this one. I’m not great with theory but you opened the doors on this one! Thanks!
Pornograffitti was a killer album, I delayed buying it because I had only heard More than words, but was at a party and was like who is this?? Mind Blown! Bought the CD the next day the minute the record shop opened. Unreal start to finish. Nuno #1 in my book.
Awesome video and explanation, uncle! Still waiting for get the funk out's solo =D
Uncle Ben! That was a yummy lesson.
Cool lesson
thanks a lot! amazing
This is such good advice to get that cool sound.
Loves me some Nuno. Would like to see a part 2 that talks about why his rhythm is funky, especially on the this tune. The funk is almost all in the right hand. Great breakdown of how the how to use the 3rds and minor 5ths, 7ths to give it that extra color. Keep carrying that funky torch.
You make this stuff make sense for me Unc thanks
I was in a Funky metal type band in Charlotte in the lat3 80's. We just came out of the studio and the local station Fox was playing some of our stuff on a local rock show, we listened one night we knew they were gonna play us, we did not realize we were the last on that show and they played "Kid Ego" right after us, we were all quite after thinking they were a local band too that blew us away!! Thankfully we found out who they were or I might have hung it up right there!! All these years later and I'm still learning his licks!
Intervals are something I picked up after 40+ years of playing guitar, I feel like such a DOPE!!!!
Dude...where have you been all my life!?! Great tutorial!
Great Video! EVH was doing this stuff on Fair Warning
Awesome explanation Ben..the A taste comment I had coffee running out through my nose here 😂😂...cheers ☕️🍺
Nuno is a top 2 player for me.
First time I saw Extreme was the III Sides tour. Next time was his band Population 1 at a club on Melrose; Tom Morello was in the crowd next to me, and they brought Warren DeMartini up on stage to jam. *internal squee*
soundS GREAT
Killer video killer guitar best uncle ever !
