    As a kid, I hated Nuno because he’s ridiculously good, writes very difficult parts (ex. Play With Me) and one of the cleanest players alive. He, along with Shrapnel Records finest (Greg Howe, Paul Gilbert, Yngwie Malmteen, Tony MacAlpine...) raised the bar after EVH.

    Nuno was my hero as a teenager. He was just insane. Off the scale as a player. Took Eddie's techniques funk rock bluesy stuff and lightening speed and his own style. Plus he was a great all round musician. Could play piano. Drums bass everything. Would take full demos having played everything himself to the band to learn and add their own flare too. Still cant do what he did. Which makes him a true master.

    You never fail to impress with your videos! "Get The Funk Out" solo was my Nuno-"Brick wall" moment for sure. When I play it, I sound like a monkey with an out of tune Ukulele.
    You really play that great you're too humble!

    Yeah bro!! I couldn't open this video fast enough 🤣 Nuno is an absolute MONSTER! His right-hand work/rhythm chops are STUPID good!! I remember freaking out when I was a teenager at his lead playing, his EVH influenced swing, and now in my mid-40's I'm still freaking out at how good he is, not only as a guitarist but also that as a musician/songwriter. Thanks for the killer videos bro!! Cheers!
    PS: I hate you even more now 🤣...I want my ADA Mp-1 again (and I really need to try the 2 Notes Torpedo Cab M deal), sick tone!!!

    I think, besides being a favourite of mine, he's one of the true "rock & roll" guitar players with groove, chops, taste, tone and songwriting. All at once. He can make an acoustic sound as tough as an electric, I think he's the real proof that tone is in the hands...
    Speaking about licks, what about the uber difficult picking part at the end of the "It's a Monster" solo or the opening lick to He Man Woman Hater? Those are pretty tough too...

    Another excellent video. Thanks for making so much great content. Hope you don't mind, but I'm fairly confident about the following. Nuno only picks the first two notes in lick #2, starting with an upstroke. The third note is a pull off and the last one is a hammer-on from nowhere. He does the same type of lick in GTFO as you mentioned, but also at the beginning of the Money solo, at an insane speed. Additionally he uses the same type of pattern in Midnight Express and the beginning of the solo for Hip Today and No Respect.
    For years I thought Nuno was picking all the notes. But slowing down tons of videos of him it became clear that he uses a clever combination of muting, hammer-ons from nowhere and just the right sound. The solo from Peacemaker Die is a great example of that kind of playing. Play With Me is another one. I could go on, but it's pretty much all over the place. However I don't blame anyone who disagrees, cause he's got a very percussive sound and if I didn't study all those videos I wouldn't be able to tell.
    Here are some nice close up's of lick #2, hopefully it's easy to spot the picking pattern:

    Great video man, I've got most of these down but the one I was never able to nail was "Lick 5 fill lick" i actually laughed when the video said you've been trying to nail it since 1990.. I felt that! Same... This album made me want to play and I never thought I'd see the day where I could play most of it and all of its incredibly executed techniques.. But that one Lick 5... tough one.. also on its a monster, the bar right before the fast string skipping patterns.. it's like some weird bluesy-jazzy weirdness.. I do it for the most part but it's so tricky!

  • @irmasil3

    I found out (the hard way) that a lot of stuff Nuno does ARE based on his TONE to be feasible. His tone is super BRIGHT AND PERCUSSIVE. That allows him to play percussive 16th notes for riffs (and solo runs on the bottom strings) that SOUND picked but are NOT...They are muted and played legato at the same time. The guitar pickup ALSO plays a role. Bright pickups can do this easily, dark or mid-based ones just get muddy and don't work. ADA is crucial because of that as well. The He-man riff is textbook on that. Most people try to play it alternate picking BUT, it you tailor the sound and get it MUTED and LEGATO, it's all there....

    • @reubenacciano
      @reubenacciano 4 роки тому +5

      100% correct. the Lawrence pickups have such a great percussive attack. Nuno exploits that so it’s often hard to tell the difference b/w a hammered and picked note. we know he *can* pick every note, but he isn’t always.

    • @MjBurns88
      @MjBurns88 4 роки тому +4

      Spot on. 4 years I I thought that was picked and would get aggravated because it seemed physically impossible. Then a light bulb went off one day while practicing I think I was messing with my sound and I just played a legato lick while muting harder than normal and I got that sound and have been doing it for years now it's still so satisfying when it comes off right. Awesome post bro

      Heresy! I’m still gonna keep trying to picking it... it’s been a 30 year investment!
      PS both EVH and Nuno started as drummers (I believe) - explains the rhythmic intelligence.
      Saw them in a small venu in Bristol UK on the day more than words hit no 1 in the US. They were on fire! A gig that we went to WITHOUT tickets and drove over 5 hours to get to. Got grid locked, sat on car for one of those hours. Rocked up just in time and somebody appeared in front of us looking to get rid of two corporate tickets for a song... magic days!

      @@qhodave i dont like Vai, i think he is one of the few guitarists that play a music not interesting. Too much use of whammy bar, strange notes and sound . He is very tech but without soul... Satriani got a better quality and more easy listening for long time. Instrumental rock is not easy to play, you risk to bore the people. • @philfrank5601
    @philfrank5601 4 роки тому

    Michael, I'm no pro and you can play circles around me, but for Lick#5, try the Marty Friedman/MAB techniqur of NOT digging your palm to mute the 'ringing out' notes. It will slow you donw too much. Sounds crazy, but instead try to focus on the precise nailing of those alternate picked notes, clean and hard, and only mute when you hit that last note (or three). The comoression effect, or whatever it's called, meams that as long as you nail those notes with enough power, the background noise will not be heard...you don't need to palm mute. The trade off is that if you MISS a note...well, there may be some breakthrough of noise for that instant. To nail this at speed, you need to concentrate on getting the notes as clean as you can. I'm sure Nuno's Bill Lawrence XL500 helped in that regard, too. Give the non-muting thing a try and I bet you'll be surprised!

    • @irmasil3
      @irmasil3 4 роки тому +2

      Nuno's settings (which I think Micheal is using here as well) were Gains 4.5/5.5 + 5.5. B 12 M 6 T 12 P 12..Very Bright!! Compensated with Bass with a BBE on the loop (added EXTRA treble as well FFS)...So the BBE gets the tone a bit more scooped. If you have a ADA MP1 3TM you don't need to boost in front. If you have a stock, a RAT will do, giving that 'percussive" tone. When you play alone, the tone is SO in your face and bright (remember the Bill Lawrence XL500 were super bright as well, so use a bright/scooped bridge pickup guitar)...When you go in the mix, it's EXACTLY like the recording. Thats why, if you listen to any on-line Nuno tutorial by the man himself, his tone (playing alone) decapitates anyone with that treble.....

    If you want to get faster at lick #2, try rotating your wrist instead of cranking your elbow.
    Technically either one is an elbow motion, but instead of "opening and closing" your elbow like a door hinge, try doing like a "hand shrug" as if a question could go either way, rotating your forearm around. Then just add picking, like EVH playing Eruption. Much more efficient.

      It's really hard to say. Wagener says that the Furman was driving the front. Possibly to compensate for a long cable run? The Rat pedal makes the tone more crunchy and percussive and tightens up the bottom a bit. Since we don't know exactly what the speaker cab sounded like with that mic setup, it's just tweaking until it sounds 'right'.

    Lick #5 (most of it) is actually Randy Rhodes in the out to solo of Mr. Crowley, still good just played slightly different.

    Спасибо, за видео!!! Но возможно во втором упражнении, ни такой извлечение. Последняя нота берется просто ударом пальца, без игры медиатора. Нуно часто играет такой техникой, экономично и можно играть быстро. ua-cam.com/video/RLn2PMKPsGQ/v-deo.html

      At the bottom of the screen there’s a little circle dot that represents they play head. If you click on the circle you can drag it to anywhere on the video without having to wait through. Also there are chapter markers listed so you can jump right to wherever you want in the video. Also try decaf

    Nuno. The man who ruined his whole career and reputation himself by playing for Rihanna and that ugly song "Beautiful girls". Sometimes it's better to die at 29.

    I don’t get it. He is obviously a talented guitarist but not outstanding in tone or technique. There are probably a couple hundred guitarists in Nashville alone that are head and shoulders above him. I respect him for what he has accomplished but he’s not an innovator in tone or style.

      Try listening to extreme songs, he is different from paul gilbert, lynch, yngwie or who ever it is. His rythm playing and lead combined is hard. His lead playing is so different.

    • @VictorNickel
      @VictorNickel Рік тому

      Absolutely not he has next level control and rhythmic placement
      It might not be apparent to you if you're not that much into southern hemisphere-based musical forms, but be assured that Nuno Bettencourt's groove is that of a guitar god, no others metal/rock players are in his league
