Swapping the stock exhaust for a glasspack on my 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport 5.9 Liter truck. This is the first of many mods to come. Subscribe now so you don't miss the new mods coming!
Total cost of this mod: $50
Total cost of fuel burned showing off: Priceless! ;)
I have been asked several times for the link to the exact muffler used in this mod. Well, here it is: amzn.to/1sR2XoU
Shameless plug included for:
Planet Safe Lubricants - planetsafelubricants.com/
Product used in this video was the L6 Penetrating lubricant. It's the equivalent of the AIM Lubricant you see listed on the web site. I just happen to have several bottles with the old labelling.
Planet Safe Lubricants is a Utah based company and a product that is produced right here in the USA

He finally gets the old exhaust out at the 13 minute mark, LOL
Best part of working on a lifted truck is you don't need a jack lol
"the sound this truck is going to make will turn you on." " You will hear me coming, and leaving."
Thanks man !! Your video helped a lot. Did the same thing but used a sawzall to cut the hot water heater.....I mean muffler off flush(haha). Then zip disked the old clamps off and a strip down the remaining pipes from the muffler and it was prepped. Way quicker. Yours was the best vid I’ve seen of it tho.
love to see video when someone at least knows something here in youtube. thanks for sharing!
God Bless Utah.. Home sweet Home. Sounds good, really good
I have the same model pickup. I installed a cheap summit exhaust, it sucked. I then cut it up and installed a 48" by 3" cherry bomb glass pack, K&N filter, throttle body spacer, shorty headers, high flow cat and a low temp thermostat. By far, the best mod after the glass pack is the 4.56 ring and pinions. If I new then, what I know now, I would have just done the ring and pinions, the glass pack and called it good. Thanks for the video.
Glass packs sound a lot better after they're broken in.
You sure 😂 I’m thinking about putting a glass pack on my dodge?
I find mine is quiet too. Same truck and year. Thx for the idea man.
"Too slow." Love it. Happens to me bud lol
Great video And your truck is looking and sounding very nice!
Thanks Aaron. I appreciate that!
The Goldeneye theme sounds good.
Love the hat 4-h for life
Hey I thought I would add som insight on how to do this job a little quicker and easier for the folks out there who want to do this. That original muffler is a beast and working with my truck I know that the original parts only have one kryptonite and that's a Chicago electric reciprocating saw. I cut the muffler off at the base of the tube on each end. Took less than 30 seconds each (using the thick metal fine tooth attachment). Cut off the rusted ring on the cat end and left the hangers in place. For now my truck is "straight" piped and short, sounds really throaty. I bought a magnaflow glass pack at pep boys for $32 and will be installing later, but for now the sound is great and annoys my wife so I might be returning the exhaust! :) Again this took me 2 mins at most from plugging in the saw to taking the muffler to the dumpster.
I took the same method using the Sawzall (recip saw) Waaaay quicker
She sounds sweet...good skills sir..
What are the stock pipe sizes, does anyone know?
Now after that flex pipe rusts it will have that added wispy sound to accompany it. Use stainless steel pipe at least.
2:52 whats the song
That looks like a Jones glass pack? I went with a Jones on my 03 Chevy Silverado 4.8l love the sound...
Yup you nailed it - amzn.to/2skomMc Years later and I’m still loving the sound of my truck.
Yeah, I found a 23 inch cherry bomb at the junkyard one time, took it home and put it on my 93 F150 xlt, sounded exactly like this truck, and you could hear it 4 block away at 3/4 open throttle, but as soon as I let off the throttle you couldn't really tell it was coming. :)
I’m still loving the sound of my truck!
I have a cherry bomb on my truck and it’s nice at idle, I want to get new headers for my truck and redo the whole exhaust but I for sure want to keep the cherry bomb
I thought you meant mod as in pre-treat the muffler. You can break them in by poring used oil with a little gas and lighting it or cook them in a fire (before installing them of course). This loosens up the fiberglass and makes a better sound. I personally think cherrybomb is the worst one. I would go with a Thrush perhaps.
+Jimmy Schmidt it was so much better than stock right out of the gate! I didn't even consider breaking it in first. I still love the sound of my truck. I set off a car alarm last week when I fired it up in a parking lot. 😂 Sounds so good.
I have the same issue and this is a good video, I wish you were in more detail about what pipe sizes/muffler that were worked with. My exhaust pipe is 2 1/2" o.d.. I didn't want to go back to factory with that big ass muffler BUT it would of made it allot easier if I would do it.....NOT!
I was REALLY new to UA-cam back then. It’s almost embarrassing to go watch myself. My newer stuff is much better done. Thanks for the kind words though! 👍🏼
Need headers and a glasspack for each.
What are the dimensions of the flex pipe and adapter you used? I have the same truck and trying to do the same project but with the 18 inch (23 inch total) glasspack. Just trying to figure out what I need. Thanks!
+Jason Sommerstad if memory serves me correctly it was 12". But you could buy a longer one and cut it down to the length needed. Tin snips are all you'd need for that and the clamps would hold it all when put in place.
good
utah!
Was the safety store out of gloves that day? lol
13:45, woody harrelson !!!
Great video. Question, if I don't put any tail pipe after the glasspack, is there any Ill effect? How would that affect the sound?
I doubt there would be any ill affects. The shorter the pipes the louder it will be. Mine is pretty loud in the cab, like when I’m on the freeway. Some people really don’t like that but I don’t mind. I simply crank up the music and roll with it! 😜
@@troysgarage thanks. Yeah, my previous setup was a cherry bomb with only straight pipe. I liked it. Daughter hated it 😆 putting on the same but with the reduction to 2.5". Should be slightly quieter with new parts.
I just did the exhaust on my 2001 dodge ram 1500 5.9 magnum and it took my about 10 minutes from start to finish
Glass packs sound the best on V8s I've never liked flowmaster sounds like a can. Glass packs sound really deep and mean. Love it! Great video. I'm getting a 2001 with a 318 with a aftermarket exhaust but haven't heard it yet and don't know what muffler it has yet. Do you still have the truck to this day?
Yup still my daily driver. Just crossed 304k miles! 😱
@@troysgarage super cool! My 97 Tahoe got 275,000 almost there lol. Anything I should know about with the dodges? I've never had a dodge ram before
".....though the sound this makes is gonna turn you on....." If only they all got it like us boys!
What are all the items that you used to hook this up
I didn’t weld any of the joints during this. I used exhaust clamps similar to these amzn.to/2LAva0q then took it to an exhaust shop and had them weld the joints later. Was about $65 for them to weld it all up. 👍🏼
Glass packs only good for about half a year or less in my opinion. That is why run my Dodge straight pipe. It sounds better & the exhaust note never fades away. Besides my sticker on my truck says LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES
🤣🙌🏼
what size inlet and outlet did you have?
+Kevin Gleason my exhaust system was stock until this mod. 2.5" at both ends. I have since this video had my truck to the muffler shop to have the joints welded. I am very happy with the sound of my truck. I definitely notice the increased power. However I don't see any improvement in fuel economy. But honestly who cares?!?! My truck is awesome! 😜
this is one thing I'm honestly wondering about too, I keep reading online that going to a dual exhaust or even magnaflow or flowmaster period over stock will increase MPG but I can't get a concrete answer with an actual number...some swear it didn't help their MPG at all...I have a 2001 v6 dodge ram 1500 and any little bit of better mileage would be greatly appreciated. I just want the truck to sound powerful and throaty, I previously had a 2001 mustang with true dual exhaust and it made me a big fan of it. If it doesn't increase MPG much at all, I'll save a ton of money and just do a single in-dual out exhaust instead of spending pretty much double the money for a "true" dual exhaust. Might honestly just get a cheap glasspack installed if it'll sound good and throaty. I might honestly just get a magnaflow or flowmaster muffler installed and keep everything else stock if that'll make the truck sound good too
WhiteSnake9191 I noticed a very slight improvement in my MPG, but honestly that wasn't my intent. I was going for HP and the improved sound. I am still loving the sound of my truck. The HP gains were marginal at best but still noticeable. I have not nor do I intend to put it on a dyno. I'm happy with my results and still enjoying my Gen2 '99 Ram!
I found one in regular red with a nice lift wheels and tires, they want 5,200, has 179k, idk if it's a good deal, I was thinking 4,500.
I’d be cautious of a lifted truck myself! Unless it’s done “right” it can be a death trap. They look good but it jacks with steering and suspension. I paid $4000 for my 1999 and that was 6 years ago.
2500 is a decent price if it runs strong and the body is in good condition. Seems like you scored! 🙌🏼
really? flex pipe? :(
What's mpg stock on that truck
+Will it Blow up I get 15.2 MPG after the mod. Before I was getting 14.8. I drive with a pretty heavy foot though. Not the best for high numbers. But I have fun!
+Will it Blow up with the way I drive I am getting a little over 15 right now. That's with the glass pack and my cold air return (ua-cam.com/video/UU8qMLrsGK0/v-deo.html). I don't take it easy on the throttle that's for sure!

Mira nomas k batalladero man
don't know if anyone noticed but the wife completely ignored him when he politely asked for the 2 nuts he needed for the brackets, and women say men have selective hearing, this is one of the many reasons why i am single
And in true female fashion, says "I was gonna get them!" As he scoots from under the truck to grab them. While still going through totes in the garage.
haha sound of this things gonna turn you on haha
oh you didnt just use cheap flex pipe...................they make exhaust pipes that are pre fraired at auto zone......same amount of time.....10 times longer lasting
What does pre fraired mean?
Bruh I new that truck looks familiar I live near utah
That’s awesome! You live near our new home or the old one? We moved in November just a little further south.
No offense man but you should use a reciprocating saw would have been easier
Yeah but I didn’t have one. 😕 Was making due with what tools I had at the time. 🤷🏼♂️
You needed safety goggles not safety glasses. Goggles seal to your face.
You lost me when you picked up flex pipe.... Sounds good. But no flex pipe
It will add 100 more horses ..
😂 absolutely! 😜
U want to see rust ! Come to Michigan
I don’t want to see rust. My next vehicle is coming out of AZ or CA! Thanks though. Haha 😜
you should've strait piped it
+dick nutz I would have but living in Salt Lake City we have a noise ordinance and that would definitely bring the fuzz down on me hard! 😜
I have a 1997 and I staight piped it. a lot more agressive
I have a 97 that's cat backed xD
Comprate un sawzall por amor de tu vidaaaaaa
Why wouldn't u have used a sawzall? Lol
+Brappers Daily would have but… you gotta use what you have. I don't have a sawzall. Still got the job done. Time spent in the garage is a win! 🙌🏼
You call that rust? Check out Michigan and Ohio's
😂🤷🏼♂️
Oh buddy I feel you there. Ohio is quite rough on cars.
Yeah exactly lol my truck came from northern Ohio been there since new til April of this year it was even bought new in Ohio for a retired farmer to use on the farm.its a 2000 dodge ram gloss black and white pinstripe mist grey interior quad cab long bed 5.2 litre 318 magnum v8 46RE AT 1500 4x4 and has the premium infinity 6 speaker amplifier filters sound system and the windshield pillars mount tweeters and the infinity by Chrysler cassette tape player am/FM CD stereo receiver and it works.
flex Pipe Really ? LMAO..
We could do without the music 😒
This was one of my very first videos ever. It was 8 years ago. I’ve gotten much better at all the things. Hope you can cut me a little slack on that. My skills and my tools have also improved immensely since then. Check some of the newer stuff before you push me in a ditch and drive off! 🤷🏼♂️🤣
