Thanks for the review. I find your opinion very helpful in making a purchase decision. These stuff are expensive and these reviews make a world of difference.
Old town all day! I had mind for a couple weeks and it’s amazing how much the spot lock helps you fish, no need to constantly adjust, and the stability is fantastic 👍🏼
GREAT COMPARISON!! I WAS leaning towards the Hobie,..BUT one UA-cam report mentioned that one fisherman encountered MAJOR ISSUES with 4 total units of his Hobie Mirage 360 drives, all failures occurring within a 14-month time period!...in addition to 3 'foulings' of the directional control cable! Many of these failures occurred during competition meets! Who needs that COSTLY discouragement, just considering the loss of the competition entrance fees alone?? Nope...my purchase will be directed to the Old Town model, for sure, now that I have listened to an owner of each manufacturer.
I just tested my BFs old town and personally old town wins with AMAZING spot lock and price. I love my 360 though... I cant complain its just solid. Spot lock in the ocean is key though. Pretty sure Hobie is under pressure making that step up. Good video.
i currently have an OT Topwater pdl & have been on the fence of a pa or the autopilot this review between the two has literally the best review by far that i have seen! Great job man!!
Yep, Hobie has some great features but I found the same thing. At the end of a five mile trip on saltwater, fighting tides, in the Old Tow I can actually walk. haha
The one thing I don't like about my PA 12 is, I can barely reach the pedals. The OT seat is adjustable. The Mirage drive is adjusted to the limit and I still have a problem. I wanted to go back to an Outback and then Hobie jacked their prices up again. Here in Japan, there is one dealer and the import tax put them out of reach at about $4700. Luckily, our base here deals with Johnson Outdoors and I can order any Old Town kayak with little mark up. Old Town to me is just a better value for your money.
Had a old town. I’m going to the bonafide p127. Yes it made fishing a breeze but it really made me think what’s the point of a kayak at this point. Really I wanted to get exercise back. It was just too easy on the old town. I will take the disadvantage I will be getting with the p127. I just want the true kayak pedal feel back. Respect to old town though. Made a solid yak.
Solid point just did the same myself. I bought a skiff and sold the AP120 and bought a used Hobie Outback, because I wanted the exercise again. The AP120 was amazing but it made me lazy.
I found myself smiling out on the lake because of everyone's comments about how annoying the sound was when they were spot locked in the old town...I am completely tone deaf, didn't bother me at all LMAO!
good video but so many things to consider between the two. Trolling motor has to be registered , thats a recurring cost annually , Battery to power said motor , expensive and adds weight . OT is not exactly hands free as you are using a remote to maneuver the boat. yes spot lock does assist but most times you are using the remote vs just your feet. hobie is significantly faster than the OT. Performs better in skinny water as well. maintenance between the two is significant . just to name a few
On the Old Town Spot lock is completely hands free. You control the rudder with your feet. Where as on the Hobie both the rudder and the 360 drive use hand steering. As far as skinny water goes they are both about the same but with OT you can get the drive out in skinny water unlike the Mirage Drive. The Hobie may be faster top end but it’s hard to keep it at 4mph which of what I get on the OT. It’s just a matter of personal preference.
Seriously, I don’t think u r comparing between the pro angler KAYAK to the auto pilot KAYAK. U r just comparing the pro angler with the Minn Kota motor itself lol.
I have to totally disagree. Hobie is the better kayak. One you dont need a battery to maximize its Potential. You can put a trolling motor on pa 14 regular or 360. And have all the options you talked about. Yes it might cost more. hobie holds it resale value. Old town does have a drive. And only offers one 45lb trolling motor. You can pick any 55lb+ trolling motor for the pa. I can switch between drive and trolling motor on my pa 14. You can pull out the drive for my more deck space the hobie. Either way great video
Kind of weird comparing a motorized version to a non motorized version. Then check out hobies with their trolling motors. Also now have the 403 and 1103 motors. Like you said price is stupid but for a kayak this versatile its the price of admission. I dont fish freshwater only saltwater and feel PA 14 with space and dry storage and the seat make its the winner. Cockpit space is so much better and that is the area you need the most space which is another win for the PA 14. Everyone has their opinions and that is why there are so many different kayaks out there. Pick on and go enjoy the heck out of them
I really care about a comparison of overall fish ability the drive to me is irrelevant because you can trolling motor either boat. I want to know about build quality warranty accessory options
Ok I’ll give you the quick facts. The spot lock feature is hands down the best feature I’ve ever used on a kayak and gives you the most fishability. It allows you to stand and fish and forget about maneuvering while you are fishing, plus you can move the kayak and work structure or the bank while standing up in the autopilot. As far as warranties go the Old Town has a lifetime hull warranty and a 2 year drive warranty. The Hobie I think comes with a 3 year drive/hull warranty (it may also be a 2 year one or the other). As far as accessories goes they both take anything that mounts to tracks but the Hobie does give you a lot more options when it comes to rail mounts and first party accessories.
If I want to pedal I take my S works beast RB on the road and push it for a workout along amaizing scenes, If I want to fish from my yak I take my Ipilot 120 old town, rigged up with yakattack and a graphs of my choose am enjoying fishing and not there for a workout
Sure but with that you’ll want a trailer and with that and all the money spent you really should just buy a boat. And I hate saying that because people say it all the time and don’t realize all the advantages of a kayak. But you’re talking probably $7k+ lol that’s insane.
@@BlueSummitOutdoors I will use the bed of my truck. It's easier and cheaper. I already have a boat that I haven't use for a while now. I use my small kayak more than my boat.
@@BlueSummitOutdoors I was thinking about the same thing, but if you're spending thousands, then why not a hobie pa 14 with a badass motor? The choice is top-end or mid-end.
Still wouldn't buy the 360 I had one last year and sold it within a few months. I would get an Outback or a PA 12/14 180 version. If you don't care about fin style drives, Id check out Old Town PDL's, Natives Propel Line, or the Bonafide P127.
@@BlueSummitOutdoors Why the 180 over the 360 if you had the option? I was looking at the Native TITAN models, but have no idea what style of pedal drive is better? Also the PA360 looks incredible out the gate for rod storage and mods ready for plug n play.. OT and Native requires a lot of mods... Seems like some of that PA price stems from turnkey features.
360 have had quite a few issues the 180 has worked the kinks out and is solid. Plus it’s about $1000 cheaper than the 360 and the drive and colors are the only differences. Just my opinion.
Man idk there is a reason they sell salt and fresh water minkota I’ feel like the old town would break down after a year or 2 on a harsh salt or ocean scenario
They are both fishing kayaks and are similarly priced, so that makes them comparable. Someone with $4k-$5k and looking for the best fishing kayak they can buy would definitely be looking at these two kayaks.
Sure you could but $5000 for a 360 + $1500 for a motor vs $4000 Autopilot and the AP is more polished overall package. For $6500, that is approaching the cost of a boat or a solo skiff with an outboard and iPilot motor.

Thanks for watching👍 Glad I could help

Absolutely!
I like ur qaud finally someone that didn't ruin their canam
Yeah ill be glad when I get one.
It will be a big upgrade boat from what i have right now.

I did end up having an issue with the motor documented here: ua-cam.com/video/d9WHtIJfZGY/v-deo.html Just so you know 👍
keep up the good kayak videos man . always watching
Thanks!
Thank you for the informative update, I'm ready to buy the old town just as soon as they quiet down that annoying autopilot everytime it engages.
Yea it would be nice if they made it brushless too.
Just what I was looking for... As soon as they get some made.... everyone is backordered on most Kayaks ??

If you fish a lot I heard the Hobie drive is a PIA to maintain.
The 360 can be a pain but the autopilot motor also has its issues with maintenance.
What's the back story here? Did you own the hobie 360 and sell it for some reason?
Yup
I was worried that the old town wouldn’t paddle to well. I planned on using my bonafide to hit the rivers For that reason and AP for the big lakes
It doesn’t paddle as well as a Bonafide but it’s not bad. Good plan though.

Curious to see how OT does in a moderate current in a river
Yea when ever I’m in a river I usually leave the battery/motor at home, because the rivers near me are pretty shallow.
I run mine in a small river and it rocks!
Hobie pa 360 with motorguide i3 is the best kayak. Haha!

You can simply put a Xi3 on the Hobie
$1000+ motor for a $6000 kayak? Or $4k for an Old Town AP120 and $3k for a Hobie Lynx?

The old towns come with a saltwater “white motor” rated trolling motor so should be fine the plug is the weak point that they should upgrade.
Nothing cheap with Hobie.
Having spot lock makes them non-comparable.

so ur comparing an electric motor to manual hmmmm. so put a friking autopilot on the 360... you can do that.

Two different categories. Motor operated vs manual operation. Bad comparison.
Not really a lot of people want the best of the best and these are the two they compare before making a decision on which on to buy.
