- With over seven months of testing the Autopilots from Old Town on the Upper Texas Gulf Coast. I've come to the conclusion that only one of the Autopilots is right for me. Watch along as I compare both kayaks and give my dislikes on these hi-tech fishing platforms.

My oldtown 136 can get 4.3mph. After I have been used this for a while, I still recommend 136 as the weight is almost the same as 120, but has much larger space and much stable.
Glad to hear that as I decided to go with the 136 as I plan to do some fly fishing out of it and like the extra clear area
Gotta love them chicharas 😂
Must be in Texas! 🤣
Ahh yes Cicadas
Thanks for an insightful and thoughtful review.
Stay safe mark with the storm tonight man.
Great review, I have my conclusion. Thank you sir!
👍
No hatches? No storage place....Uncomfortable
I guess it just depends on how you look at it. As a UA-camr I take a lot of gear with me for fishing and filming. I haven’t had an issue with having to leave anything behind. On average I spend 5-8 hours on the kayak. No aches or pains for me. But I understand we’re all different people and what works for me may not be for you.
All that money spent on that boat and all I hear is a lot of bullshit going on. The way to solve these problems is to buy a nice boat and add a troll motor and rudder plus battery it will be alot better boat and half the price. There you go problems solve
When spending 8k plus on kayaks... but don’t wash after every trip.... more money then brains, take care of your equipment and it will take care of you the cup holders is an easy fix water hose and a towel don’t be nasty bro. Pro tip if you cleaned your yak the cup holder wouldn’t look that way js Lol
I want a kayak 😖 work today damn hard to still not have one ... #onlybankfishing. I enjoy the videos tho keep them going idk how to explain it but watching your kayak videos keep me enjoying the thought of when I get one.
I put a 55# and 30# minn kota on my 120 pdl with stock and 3 blades props. Surprisingly i got the same top speeds on both motors and both props. Top amp draw on 30# was 24 and for the 55# 45 amps burt top speeds were the same. Conclusion. It’s hull design.
That’s some BS that it won’t go faster because of the hull design. Mount a 6hp outboard on the back and that thing will be a rocket.
Man I live in the Houston area and have some good spots down at the shore id love to go i just don't have a yak atm
Hey Mark, thanks for the comparison I've been struggling which one to buy. Curious, if you could put some low grade Loctite on the rudder screws to stop them from backing off? And for the seat issue how much higher do you think the seat would need to be not to feel the battery case? Do you think by adding equal bushings to the upper and lower mounts this could be an effective fix?
Unfortunately stainless means just that, Stains Less. Hit your screws and what not with Fluid Film. Non Toxic and Non Hazardous. Great review.
I just got a Pro Angler 12 360XR about 3 weeks ago. It was GREAT for about two hours on the water. Then the 360XR wouldn't catch on the universal drive gears, and the drive itself wouldn't stay straight! The kayak was hellishly expensive, and two hours into it the drive now just spins like a top--WHEN I'VE GOT IT LOCKED IN 'FORWARD ONLY' MODE!! This thing is totally unreliable. Hobie has got to get a grip the the mechanics of this. I'm after my dealer now, it's NOT going to be pretty. The Hobie rep wouldn't even call me. It's infuriating.
imo if you’re investing into a top of the line fishing kayak and certainly one that’s motorized and will most likely have a graph on it weight shouldn’t be a concern. It shouldn’t be going on a roof rack or really even the back of a truck. You should be factoring in money for a trailer. Fb market place and get a jet ski/seadoo trailer and fit it to your kayak. Easier launching and no concern or dragging it on the ground and scratching the hull.
I hit 7mph with an ozark cooler full of ice and also fishing gear when going with the tide in the jetties in the 120ap i weight 160
I'm definitely having a hard time deciding if I should build one or buy an autopilot. For that much money it shouldn't have a lot of those issues. I would buy one with a 24v 80lb thrust motor.
I think the hopeful fixes are very valid points, great review. I would like to see a video on how you approach the landing, how easy is it to lift the propeller to get it out of the way? Do you have to stand up to do that in the case you approach a rock you didn’t see suddenly. Would it break the drive? I
Many of my concerns are with the durability of the motor
I would like to see a pedal assist similar to electric bikes that have both a battery and pedal capability. Hopefully, that’s coming soon.
As the models increase in price, things like a way to lock the rudder down should be part of the basic package, especially when it's on the lesser-priced models.
Be careful out there Mark hurricane is cat 4! Take care of yourselves
Thanks for a great review. I ordered the 136, but after your review, i will change to the 120.
A stronger trolling motor would make it faster.
I suspected you'd favor the 120 [mainly because of weight.] I am impressed with both platforms. I retired from the militryy 35 1/2 years ago and at the time was using a Lam-Pro 10' Kayak (out of San Angelo, Tx) It weighed only 40#, but was not near the platform that the Old Towns are. Back then, Texas didn't require it to be registered, so it was very inexpensive to use [just basic safety gear and away you go. Glad you opted for the lighter weight [ya ain't gettin' any younger, pal] Semper Fi, Tight Lines and be well, my Brother!
Very interesting. 👍
This guy is the Karen of kayak reviews...
He will remind you on every video that he does this full time as well 😂 video very informative though
kudos bro. thanks
No problem 👍
Thanks for the review. Informative and a good comparison. I have owned the 136 for 5 months, and I want to offer my thoughts on the propeller. I agree with you that the speed could be greatly increased with a better prop. I've already proven to myself that it can be. I created, and 3D printed a prop that is very similar to the stock prop. Only "cone" shaped base and no negative pitch. What I discovered is that the speed went up 0.3 MPH. Again these were minimal changes to the stock prop and my prop was printed with PLA plastic and the blades flexed. So I believe I could greatly increase my prop speed by thickening the blades, and printing with stiffer plastic among other things. The big draw back I found was the prop created turbulence that interfered with my transducer. I think this is probably what Old Town meant by saying that the hull design won't allow for a faster prop. Because of their transducer mount location... I'm trying to decide now if I want to move my transducer to the back and change props...
Great find! Thanks for bringing this to light.
What battery do you use or recommend? Looking at a Lithium battery for weight savings
I use FPV Power
Apologize if this has been suggested already, but couldn't you take some velcro straps and a stiff rod/board and strap it across the rudder pedals to keep it straight?
Might work
106 is better .all I need is to get to pint a,b,c,and go back to the dock .when I get to my sports I turn the motor off use the paddles ,use anchor .
As long as it works for you that's all that matters.
The screws are most likely rusting because someone used a carbon tipped screwdriver on them.
🤔 not sure
What in the living hell is the background noise?! Video is unwatchable due to that.
Most likely the Cicadas 😂
Thank you, Thank you! You helped me make a decision on the 120. Great Review
Glad the video was helpful.
I wonder why they didn't put a bigger motor on the 136? That way we could achieve around 4.5 mph. Do they have an upgrade motor option for the 136? But since this is 3 years ago, perhaps that hull has been tweaked like you say. Did they fix the rudder so that it can be locked now? (tension knob, etc.) and locking ring for the rudder cable loosening problem? Great job, subscribed!
OH NO YOU DIDN'T! I apologize but I just came across this old video and couldn't believe me ears. Because I fish for a living and "...I don't have time to clean my kayak..." That's like saying, "Excuse me sir but I don't have time to clean my weapon." You gotta be kidding me!
Literally half the issues are solved if you just ‘TAKE CARE OF YOUR DAMN KAYAK’’. Also, very Karen of you to complain about speed on a yak built for stability.
Like your review, the 136 is only 6# more so weight ????
Hard to move around and fairly difficult to transport on my truck rack.
Thank you for uploading this video, I think it’s worth watching
Thanks 🙏
You don’t need a rudder in water that you are using a push pole in.
You do when the winds blowing but hey some of us are stronger than others. I need to hit the gym 💪.
Anyone in here haul their kayak on the side? I have an extended 1 ton 3500 Chevy express that I want to haul my kayak inside , while laying on it's side. I have 11' to the cage , but I have another 2' + slipping it through the cage door , and I think up to a 13' kayak will fit. The old town kayak is what I'm looking at. Fishing fresh water and salt water.
Navarre sells a bolt to apply tension to the rudder
👍
Was just at Dick's. The regular (non pedal) Old towns are 3 to 4 times the price of the Pelicans with the same features. You're paying for the name
A Camaro and Corvette have the same features.
@@MDLRFishing Yep. Again, paying for the name
All I heard was a bunch of whining about how you bought something without inspecting it first for your needs. Apparently you have Champagne taste on a beer budget.
Comparing the speed of a motorized kayak to a non-motorized Hobie Outback is nonsense. Stick a motor on the Outback, then do your comparison. Or, take the motors off the Old Towns and see how well they work against a Mirage drive. Just sayin'...
Color selection for most new kayak brands with these black camo pattens are awful. Old town, solid bright colors please? Also, keep it simple... blue, red, orange, and green or yellow.
What kind of battery should I get for the 120?
Thank you for helping 👍👍
A 100ah battery will be perfect. I recommend lithium because it’s very light.
Better Torqueedo motor is better because it is brushless. With lithium on a brushless motor, you can go further and longer. Downside is proprietary voltage.
Considering buying a couple autopilot 120s I've already asked you a couple questions was just wondering if you know if I wait till next year and buy next year's model have you heard anything that they're changing something
Someone commented, bad review for an awesome product???? I'm thinking Someone from old Town!!! Thank you for a real life honest review of the kayak's
I'm patient enough to see if old Town reworks there quirks!! If not, I'll hold on to my 4grand!!!
speed isn't everything. The torqedo can't take the place of an anchor. That motor is groundbreaking.
Great review.
The "Torquedo" is not a fair comparison, it is a 70lb thrust motor compared to the 45lb thrust of the minn kota. Also spending $2700 on a motor is out of the question for most kayak anglers.
I am not an engineer, but increased thrust will increase speed to a point (diminishing returns) the question is how much faster do you need to go in a kayak without compromising stability of the platform? Your buddy who has the torquedo, is his boat as stable as the old town?
I wish you had experience with the hobie pro angler 12T, as that is my other choice (no registration requirements).
I figured they went a lot faster . About the same speed as I get out of my lure 11.5 with watersnake t24 .
Yep,, I'm thinking to move the seat support strap on that right side. I think I have room to move the strap to the front cross rod and the back curved support of the back rod frame. That's what i'm thinking. Maybe I can get away with moving only one attach point.
Just bought a 120, and it weighs a ton. Hopefully I can load and unload safely by myself.
Do you think this kayak would be fine for offshore fishing and how does this compare to the 2020 predator pdl
What I learned :
Bigger is better.
1 inch can make all the difference in the world. 😜
A small tip for screws you would like to prevent them backing out. You can use some clear fingernail polish on the screw threads. It will give you a light amount of resistance and it is water proof so it won't dissolve. But with a tool you will be able to break the polish if you need to remove the screw.
Don't compare motorized vs pedal kayaks. Lol.
Mark, great review of both platforms. I'm also retired military. I have an old Old Town Predator (2015) and want to get the Old Town 136 but no one has them. I looked on the Old Town web site and there aren't any available. There wasn't any info on how to get on a wait list either. Would you sell your 136?
Great Video iam think to buy the 120 Too tanks bro and god bless u and ur family
Do you need the rudder to stay straight while running the autopilot?
Most definitely, it keeps the rear from going squirrelly.
@@MDLRFishing Thank you for info
You don’t have time to rinse your kayak off? Really
The tri hull design must not be as good as a canoe hull type hull.tri is more stable of course.
Good info as usual Mark! Stay safe!
Thanks good buddy!
Maybe on the Rudder part swinging from side to side , the foot controls could somehow be locked or held in place so the Rudder won't turn from either Right to Left. Just a thought for Old Town and or for you Mark . As For the Speed part , a little faster might be Nice , but I'd say for Old Towns First Go around with this sweet setup they did a pretty darn good 👍 Job . Agree with the Cup holder Water/draining issue , Totally agree with you. I've also heard that for lots of Salt water use , the Kill Switch that also retains the Spare Shear Prop Pin gets super Rusty because the salt Water gets in Where the Kill Switch goes, But this is from another video Called Navarjo Kayaking. I myself Do Not fish in Salt Water . Other then these Minor Issues , Old Town Nailed It and Hit a Bomb Home Run for sure 😎👍. Great insight and Info and Review on Before you Buy this Model Old Town . Thank You Mark For your Video Mark .
Where did you get the little red marker flags on the back of both?
Hey Mark, thanks for the comparison I've been struggling which one to buy. Curious, if you could put some low grade Loctite on the rudder screws to stop them from backing off? And for the seat issue how much higher do you think the seat would need to be not to feel the battery case? Do you think by adding equal bushings to the upper and lower mounts this could be an effective fix?
Great video they cost $8990 in Australia😁
you should just spray in the cup holders everytime that water grossss
For that money you think they would out in a 80lb trolling motor at least
Is it possible to demo one of those auto pilots? I wouldn't mide fishing with ya 1 day to try it out.
My Minn Kota 106 throttle control, not spot lock, is faster offshore and is safer due to being able to turn out of the trough, and square up. The 120 bobs less, but is much more clumsy. Gread vid. My bud gets his up to around 12 safely with an out board.
Dang! I can’t imagine going 12.
Really informative and helpful video.
How did your friend mount the torqueedo on the autopilot.
These are designed to be more stable i wish they'd make a speed version
I wish I could win the old Town autopilot 136
Mark, why not buy a trailer? You should see mine. Rarely do you do much heavy lifting. And you’re right, the 136 is heavy. Great comparison but I was surprised you chose the 120 over the 136.
IMO it’s too much of a hassle.
Marky Mark's trusted reviews. Thanks, Man!
Hi Mark, great review. What is more stable in the water, the 120 or 136? Thanks
The 136 had a slight edge but not by much.
Which kayak would u recommend for a beginner I’m looking at buying a fishing kayak
The Autopilot is my favorite because it makes fishing easy.
Great comparison video Mark. There is another major difference between the two that I didn’t hear you mention, Max capacity! The 120 is 558 where the 136 is 660. That’s a big difference for heavier fisherman, or those that may want to bring a child with them.
Thanks 🙏
Torquato? You mentioned it. Was it on an Old Town kiyak? Sorry, I didn't catch that video that you referenced.
It was on another kayak that was bigger and carrying much more gear than mine.
Does the hummingbird link to the trolling motor?
How's it do going shallow or getting in the weeds?
Do you think it’s idea to get the 136 for top mounting I just like the 136 more for more deck room
It can be done 🤙
I had a stroke a month ago and I have a bonafide ss127. I just don’t have it in me to paddle around the lake any more. Hopefully the old town will be in the budget next year. Thanks for the honest review. Stay safe
Take care of yourself.
Great comparison video!! What thrust power are those electric motors ? What exact battery are using and how much range can you get? Thx mate
They’re both 45 lb thrust. I use two FPV 50 ah batteries.
I can easily go 12 miles.
Any news regarding "Version 2" ETA?
really enjoyed the review .... learned alot about both models. Don't want to nitpick but i would like to hear what model you would choose just based on how they both performed on the water. Take the weight out of the picture if you will. If both models were already in the water and ready to go and you had your pick of the one you would take out fishing witch one would you choose.
Hands down the 136, tons of deck space.
Hobbies has same issues with hardware I rinse my 2020 every trip still rusted hardware including drive that worries me far as hull for old town its double edged sword you build for speed and loose stability far as weight if your upgrading yaks most the time your picking up weight love oldtowns platform the price is all that's stopped my purchase once yak bought at least couple grand more with good batteries and rigging with that said if it was my job would be my first buy great review
Thanks Tim!
Regarding the screws in the cable at the rudder, what about using a locktite type adhesive to prevent the backout?
Might put too much tension on the rudder cable and it’ll eventually snap.
metal tracks for trolling or at least option for drop in replacement of the plastic one s
I was trying to decide whether or not to purchase the pilot vs the PDL drive and this video has the answer thanks for the info
I hope you enjoy whatever you decide to go with 👍.
Brochacho likes it very good video thanks Mark!
If you spot lock on a location and you need to fish all off of the transom of the kayak will will the seat reverse
No swivel seat option and or ability to turn it around.
Great review , Ok I will take your 136 , LOL
Mark lookin like a baller with 2 auto pilots parked in front of the house.. good review
😂
How much does the 120 weigh ? I've seen 85 lbs and 119 lbs
According to the old town website, 152lbs
Is there a stability difference when standing between the 120 n the 136?
more stability on the 136, small difference though
