  • Before I made the leap in purchasing the Hobie PA 360 I was incredibly torn between the Hobie PA and the Old Town Sportsman. Both kayaks were new, expensive and feature packed. My previous kayak was an Old Town Predator, which I loved, and it was really hard for me to decide between the newest Hobie or Old Town. After fishing extensively out of the Hobie Pro Angler and spending 2 FULL days on the water with an Old Town Sportsman I have a pretty good feel for both. These are probably two of the top fishing kayaks available and you'll probably be very happy with either one but there are some key differences you should be aware of if you're choosing between these two.

The sportman is not comparable to the Hobie. The price are in completely different leagues, comparable would be the the Autopilot 120.

Had a Hobie and sold it. Does not handle wind very well, had constant problems with the drive. Moved to a Bigwater 132 and like you said, Old Town is bullet proof. I can’t tell you how many local guys have constant issues with their hobies. They are so nice, but fragile to me.

People thought I was crazy looking into an Old Town Sportsman PDL 106...at the time I was looking for something to fish out of...other than another canoe or ponton for these lakes that do not permit gas motors on...and I didn't want to have to pay to register a boat with an electric motor...and it had to be portable enough, but big enough to stand up in...and could slide right into the back of my F150 without the need of a tail gate extender... and it had to be light enough to car top on my Jeep Rubicon...and the Old Town Sportsman PDL 106 fit the bill for me...I've owned her for two years now...I'm glad I bought her...even over the PDL 120 size...and I love them both...smiles

There is no competition or equal, to the Hobie 360 drive. It is the cream of the crop, handsdown. No others do what it does. Also, their seat is 100% better than any other, period. About the weight, well I dont know anyone that does not use some sort of wheeled dolly for transportation. Whose gonna be carryina a fishing kayak anywhere, anyway !!! Its is wide and very stable. The Hobie PA14 360 is #1 all the way around. The price reflects all of the great engineering put into this boat. The rudders that are easily raised and the retractable transducer mount.

This is a comparison that shouldn’t have happened. Two completely different boats in regards to size. Why keep saying “ keep in mind one is 14’ and one is 10’ “ Exactly !! So why do the video ?

I just got a Pro Angler 12 360XR about 3 weeks ago. It was GREAT for about two hours on the water. Then the 360XR wouldn't catch on the gears, and wouldn't stay straight. The whole thing was hellishly expensive, and two hours into it the drive just spins like a top--WHEN I'VE GOT IT LOCKED IN 'FORWARD ONLY' MODE!! Hobie has got to get a grip the the mechanics of this. I'm after my dealer now, it's NOT going to be pretty. The Hobie rep wouldn't even call me. It's infuriating.

I went with the Hobie pro angler 14 360 simply because of the stability and maneuverability. I fish both fresh and saltwater with it and most of the freshwater lakes I fish locally are covered in stumps. The boat is well worth the money spent in my opinion.

For what its worth, I had a Hobie Revo for a season. I sold it and moved to the Old Town 132 PDL. In my opinion there is no comparison. The OT is so much more comfortable, stable and better engineered. I fish the salt in NE.

Excellent reviews. I do not plan on buying a pedal drive kayak ( I have a plastic 10’ pond prowler). I’ve fallen down a UA-cam kayak pedal drive rabbit hole. Watching all kinds of reviews. Your reviews are always as unbiased and concise as I can find on UA-cam. Also super thorough. Much appreciated!

Old towns plastics doesn’t flex like hobies does. The sportsman 132 pdl is a fishing machine.

I'm so glad you did this. I have seen tons of reviews on the OT 120PDL but not the 106. I'm pulling the trigger Wednesday!

Awesome comparison! I have the Hobie PA 12 360. I'm 70, so it IS heavy for me! I have the Boonedox Landing Gear, but ALSO the Dynamic Dolly, which certainly makes moving the Hobie easier.

Enjoyed your review, pace and tone. Lots of detail that you cannot know unless you given a walk through.

The hobie rod holder setup is unbelievable, wish my Autopilot 136 had something similar.

Forward facing rod holders, I knew I forgot something. That's a great idea!

I tried both of those 'Yaks, but decided for the fishing I do - I got the Titan. Enjoyed the Video you did, and the Pro's and Con's of both 'Yaks.

I bought a PA14 360 and I really like it a lot. I also just bought a PDL 120 for my wife. I tried a cruise on my buddy's PDL and I really liked it. I agree about the speed of the old town. There are things I like and don't like about each. One thing I think that old town wins is the rudder deployment. It seems like every time I am landing on my Hobie I have to fumble a little to pull my rudder up. I like how pulling the drive kinda keeps a little more space available on the old down. The Hobie bow storage is really nice in the accessibility and way better than the old town to maximize my capacity in it I have taken out the white bin and store only non water sensitive things in it. Still, I've only ever had less than a tablespoon in that area when I have found water in it. I have a love hate relationship with the rod tubes in my Hobie. They're so nice for having a good number of rods available but I've bent a few spinning rod guides trying to get them stowed and it takes a bit of jockeying to get rods much longer than 6'6" in and out of them while seated. I like the tubes more than what little rod or other storage comes on the old town. I'll probably build a side saddle arrangement for the old town to help with rod storage. I think the fish finder setup and installation will be a win for the Hobie but I haven't started on the old town yet. After seeing reports of folks having issues with 360 drives and repairs being slow. If my Hobie drive dies early I will prob go to old town or maybe look closer at a Jackson Knarr.

I love my old town PDL 120. Even loaded down I’ve gotten it up to 5 mph and 3 just cruising. It’s even faster then my buddy’s bass boat using the trolling motor on them electric only lakes. I do like the blank canvas idea with the old town allowing you to pretty much outfit the way you want.
