Best hands down start to fishing instructional trolling motor setup ! The actual cost and tips on the water very helpful.. I appreciate it. I was on the fence about adding one to my PA14 360 but after your video I’m already searching for parts availability’s 👍🏼 .
I did change the battery clips account the wire was getting hot at the terminals. After changing them out I have had zero issues with this setup and I can say it is all rock solid. Good Luck on the water. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B094NT7H5D/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I'll be making the upgrade from a Native Titan to the Hobie PA, the fit and finish really is miles apart. Thanks for the video, will definitely help when I start fitting mine out.
Love the video. I wish you would take your kayak step by step, part number by part number. I believe that there are a ton of Hobie people want to know and see your thought process of how to use a Xi3. Thank you for your time. You have a wonderful set up there.
Thank you, I'm glad you found it helpful. I did change the battery cable clips to a quick connect battery terminal because the cable was getting very hot and started to melt. The new connections fixed that issue. Other than that, everything else is awesome and I haven't changed anything else.
Very nice set up. One thing I don't understand is, why so many people go with the thru-hull at the back of the boat? I feel a better solution would be another Attwood.
I never thought about doing it that way. The only thing I have changed in 2 years is the battery clamps. I went with a set of heavy duty ones like you would have on your car. the clips I have in the video got hot and started smoking while on the water about a month after I made the video. Thanks for watching!
I was considering the Hobie PA but got the Hobie Lynx instead. No trolling motor but easily can go fish 30 minutes one way and back 30 minutes another way average speed 4.2
so is this still better than any of the newest Old Town's ? I heard the standing stability is better on the Old Town's, true or false? Thanks for all you do to keep us informed!!!!
Without a doubt it is the best. There is a night and day difference between the Hobie PA 14 and any of the Oldtown Kayaks. I never felt comfortable standing in my Oldtown Predator I have no problems standing in my PA14. I think the most noticeable difference is the stability and all the room in it that I didn't have in my other kayaks. It's more like a boat than a kayak. For the record, I haven't changed anything on my setup from this video except for the battery clamps. Thanks for watching!!!
Good review! Non related question... What camera are you using and what mic and is it wireless? The sound quality is great. I use a GoPro 5 and the video quality is good it leaves a lot to be desired for sound quality and volume.
I use 2 Gopro 6 set on 1080p and Rode Wireless Go microphone, I added a cheap $20 lapel mic from Amazon with a dead cat to block the wind. You can see the lapel mic on my shirt and on my vest in the video.
Nice video. I've been rocking an Old Town PDL since they came out and stuck an xi3 on the front of mine last year. I really love that kayak, but the added weight of the TM on the front really changed its handling - especially in rough water. Can you tell me if the PA 14 handles much different with the TM on the front?
I had a PDL for 3 years and I could see the weight from the TM causing water to come over the nose in rough water. I have had water come over the nose on my PDL on Lake Michigan without a TM. I have not had that issue from my PA14 at all, it is a much more stable boat than the PDL. As much as I loved the instant reverse of the pedal drive the mirage drive is much smoother and less stressful on my legs and just as fast. I would not trade back even if they offered it to me for free. (no joke)
My motor is for fresh water. NO the 8 gage jumper cables worked great but there was issues with those cheap Walmart battery clips I bought, the wire was getting very hot at the terminal, so I swapped them out for quick connect battery clamps I found on amazon ( see link below) and it worked perfectly, no more hot wires. Everything I added has been rock solid except for the battery clips. I will not be changing anything for next season. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B094NT7H5D/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Can you still open the front hatch? Also, since the front handle is covered by the motor Mount, how do you lift the front end to pull your kayak from your car to he ramp?
If the motor is in the water, yes you can freely use the front hatch. You can crack it if the motor is cradled. This is a handle built in to the Objective one mount. The kayak is heavy with the motor mounted on the front so I put it on at take it off at the ramp unless I'm parked close to the ramp.
I bought a 100 ah lithium battery from Ebay. It is perfect for my setup, I have never run out of juice. I paid about $400 for it when I made that video. Now they have them on Ebay as cheap as $160 with free shipping. that's awesome.
I just reach forward and depress the release by hand. You have to push the head of the motor to get it out of the cradle any way, so why not just press the release by hand. I do have lawn mower cord tied to the head of the motor to assist me in raising and lowering the motor.
There is a handle built into the Objective One mount. I do not trailer my PA14 I haul it in the back of my pickup truck. The handle works fine I just don't mount the XI3 onto the kayak until I have the kayak in the water at the launch site and the XI3 is the first thing I take off before I pull the boat out of the water. The motor can be mounted and can be taken off in about 10 seconds so it's no big deal. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
I have ran it full throttle for a total of 1 hour then trolled at 2 mph for 5 hours and still had 50% on the battery. that was the must I used it in one day. I have no complaints and would buy another. The last time I looked on ebay they were $330.00. great deal. Good luck!
I will put that on the list as soon as we get rid of this hard water on our lakes. I'm thinking 1.5 hours maybe 2 hours. We will give a shot. Stay tuned!

Do you have a 120 ? Doesn't the drive hit the xi3 ?
Predator PDL. No clearance issues.
