You really need to experience the mighty Van Halen one album side at a time. Nothing but pure joy and greatness. Long live Eddie
1984 was HUGE in so many ways!
Album, Mtv, 80's life... I could do it all again 😁 \m/
Nice reaction y'all 🖒🖒
Thank you! Seems like a great era!
This song was during the MTV era when all the channel played was...uh, music. And only music. Van Halen represents my youth (I was 16 when they first exploded on the scene.) I was fortunate enough to see them live and they were incredible. Eddie Van Halen was, in my mind, in the top 5 guitarists of all time. RIP virtuoso. A great band and a great response to this song.
Fkin A
When Van Halen came to town the whole town shut down.
Rock in peace EVH.
DLR was and probably still is considered rocks best martial artist. That's where his flexibility and jumping skills come from. I wouldn't want to meet him in a dark alley. I think he could whooop some butt. I love Eddie's smiles when he is performing. I think that is where he was most happy, on stage. Great reaction!
DLR trained with Benny the Jet...the line in Jump " I have seen the toughest soul around", refers to Benny
Benny the Jet was a bad man for sure. @@Tom-ee3gs
DLR credits Benny the Jet on the liner notes for the 1984 album --- he was a good friend and also Dave's trainer in several martial arts
I was 15 when this came out in January 1984. My brother (2 years younger) and I played street hockey and basketball that whole summer in our friends' driveway blaring this whole cassette tape. The whole thing is golden. 'I'll Wait', 'Hot For Teacher', 'Panama', you've got some very iconic VH songs on that album. R.I.P. Eddie.
-#cheers-- !-
I was 13, not in high school yet.. Every time my brothers and I would go to my cousins they would have either the record or the tape blasting 😂.. they always got in trouble for that, but they didn’t care. They’d go outside somewhere with a cassette tape and blast it, oops there goes the speakers 😂.. ah man ..
In my era the word "jump" was very powerful in music.😎 Every single named "Jump" or used "jump" in a song title was a huge hit record, all platinum selling.💰
•1968, The Rolling Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash"•
•1983, The Pointer Sisters' "Jump"•
•1984, Van Halen's "Jump"•
•1992, Kris Kross' "Jump"•
•1992, House of Pain's "Jump Around"•
Although they started in the 70s, they were da bomb in 1984. Eddie’s talent and Dave’s on stage presence were unbeatable. Dave was a big draw for the girls. They used to point to their security as they picked girls out of crowd for their backstage legendary parties. Sex drugs and rock n’ roll baby! They wrote the book.
RIP Eddie. I still can’t believe the world can spin without you. ❤
-rest in paradise- 😔 🕯
David Lee had such a great out there personality!! 🤣😁 Dude was funny as hell and just great to be around.😊
Next Van Halen songs should be "Panama", "Mean Street", "Ain't talking bout Love". For a live song, check out the live 1982 version of "Unchained".
Seems like Panama is a popular suggestion 🤔
VH was the original party band. They were also the template for every hair metal band of the 80s, except if you notice the most flamboyant member of VH was DLR. The rest of the guys in VH were pretty much jean & t-shirt guys. The other hair metal bands took it way past the extreme and they all decided to be flamboyant with poofy hair. But the thing that truly separated VH with the rest is that while the other bands had hit songs, VH had hit records, which is why they survived longer than all those 80s hair metal bands that crashed and burned after the arrival of grunge. Probably the only band to rival VH in terms of longevity from that era is Bon Jovi (coincidentally another band named after someone in the group).
I’m 53 and grew up on Van Halen you two don’t look like millennials you don’t know this suing or video? Dang I one who the Beatles, Elvis, and Jimi Hendrix were when I was 5. I’m trying to process how you both don’t know this song.
Millenials are in their 30s and early 40s, they do look like millenials.. people in their 20s are Gen Z.
Running with the devil, mean streets is also a good one. The singer David was heavy into martial arts, explains his flexibility. Also I heard on the radio this morning the guitar eddie played in the hot for teacher video just sold at auction for 4 million dollars.
Yes "Running With The Devil" is a good one as is that whole debut album. You two should really do "Ice Cream Man" from it, just a fun great song. DLR for all his ego stuff was a great front man. He could get a crowd going when seeing them live.
Great reaction! Yes this is Van Halen and this was an all time KICK BUTT Rock performance.
This is a straight up synth track. HEAVY SYNTH. Have y'all EVER seen a lead guitarist glide in and out of such a track with a FACE MELTING solo with such ease? I can't think of anybody who can do it better than Eddie!
VAN HALEN 5150!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! with Sammy... same concert as ERUPTION...you will NOT B disappointed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great stuff! Check out "unchained", "mean street" "dance the night away" "ain't talking 'bout love" from the DLR era!!
The album was "1984'. Guess what year it came out? I was 16 and a HUGE VH fan at the time. My mom was going shopping and I asked her to get me the new VH album while she was there. She had to have her friend interpret the Roman numerals on the album cover to tell it was 1984 but I got the record and I played that thing to death. Soon as CD's came out, I bought a player so I could get all the VH CD's.
Dance the night away if you want to hear more of Dave's best vocals.
Thx for the suggestion!
That's still from the later VH, keyboards and a lighter sound. They should go back to the beginning, in my opinion, first
Went to one of the 1984 tour concerts. One of my all time favorites. Have been fortunate enough to see Van Halen 4 times- 2 David Lee Roth and 2 Sammy Hagar. Enjoyed both lead singers and what they contributed to Van Halen. RIP Eddie 😢
Guys David Lee Roth It happened to be a second dan black belt in Taekwondo That's why so flexible and why he does those moves kicks very very well
David Lee Roth can kick and jump like that because he was heavy into martial arts.
Bars & Barbells U guys have to hear n c the music video of Van Halen called Panama. U guys will enjoy.
The “Mighty Van Halen” in deed! If you want variety, you are listening to the right band! Every song on every album is something different
Van Halen , along with a lot of bands from the same time , always put on a great show! Awesome musicians and great harmonies.
As a Van Halen fan (they are my #1 favourite band) my recommendation for your next song is the studio version of "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love"
I thought this was played at every wedding reception?
Great reaction! VH recorded 3 live songs being performed with Roth in 1981 in Oakland. The songs capture their energy and party feel that they were known for in concert. The songs are So This Is Love, Unchained, and Hear about it Later.
Thanks and thank you for the suggestions! We'll keep Oakland is mind!
Nobody got that old without seeing and hearing Jump. It's been on the radio and UA-cam for a while
yeah. I watch some reaction videos here and there and am always amazed when someone will say something like "I don't think Ive actually heard the Beatles but..." What?
Jump by Van Halen was one of the very first videos I saw on Mtv back in 1984. Good times!
David Lee Roth a Frontman’s Frontman along with Eddie Van Halen on Guitars was a lethal combination of Hard Rock & one of the Most Fun Loving Rock Group of All Time. Add in those Killer backing Vocals & that Bass of Michael Anthony & the Underrated Drumming of Alex Van Halen and you have a Top 10 Rock Group of All Time
@@brenthenderson3983 David Lee Roth. A Frontman’s Frontman
How does anyone over the age of 15 not know this song, or who Van Halen is...?
It's cringy to watch because this is a band that was rock and just was amazing on stage. This was their first real attempt at a video and you can tell it's awkward for them throughout it. It just feels unnatural to them.
Yeah, def the more poppy, fun, lighter side of VH here with this one. Girl Gone Bad is a MUST from this album. Deeper cut. Faster, edgier & the playing & vocals on it are top notch!
Cool! Thx for the suggestion!
@@barsandbarbells2022 4 sure. Looking 4ward!👍
It kills me when people say I heard that at a basketball game or a movie or a video game…that’s definitely this generation as for me I heard this song on the radio the day it was released I also bought the album and saw the tour before the video came out! That’s the difference between 1984 and 2023! Luckily for me I saw all the greats in the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s well before this generation heard them on a movie, video or basketball or football game…ie Ozzy Osborne’s crazy train at NFL games!
Fabulous reaction! Totally subscribing! I can't wait to see more.
FYI - Eddie wrote the music to every single song for Van Halen (except the covers of course) and would give a tape of each new song to the singer, in this case lead singer was David Lee Roth, who would work up some lyrics and then it would go from there. For this song, Dave has said that it was inspired by seeing a suicide jumper on TV. And of course he has a pretty juvenile sense of humor (which you're seeing i.e. Hot for Teacher). AND that is Eddie playing the synth keyboard during this entire song from beginning to end.
Please listen to "I'm the One" next. Here is the album version:

Here it is live on their very first world tour in 1978 promoting their first album (I was in college) with a 40's DooWap break section:

Eddie is supernatural on this song and Alex on drums is dangerous - either version is exceptional.
Their live shows' energy are unparalleled but it is hard to find good live videos before 1981. Keep in mind there was no internet or MTV then and people lost their minds when they first saw Eddie play.

Jamie's Cryin', Everybody Wants Some, Little Guitars
Take note when you are choosing VH songs, the band's second singer, Sammy, is quite different from this one (Dave, the nutty - he left the band in '84) and it changes a bit but still super good. Dave rejoined the Van Halens when they were in their 50's and Eddie's guitar playing was stellar as always. Here is a live "I'm the One" from 2008 and you can see how easy Eddie makes it look even in his late 50's:

Love this 80s van halen. They were fun. Eddie's future wife on television on a hit program. The more chaotic the world becomes, the more I miss this time. I so wish others could experience what we did through the music we enjoyed.
I've heard this a million times and I never get tired of it because you can always hear something new everytime you hear it.
I love Dreams! And Right now!
Probably their weakest song!
I grew up with
Van
Halen
That into you recognized was used in the trailer for the movie Ready Player One.
Great hit from 1984. My junior year in high school.
This is the very first video I ever saw on MTV!! Back when thats all MTV was!! ❤😊
"Panama", "Girl Gone Bad", "I'LL Wait", "House Of Pain", "Secrets", "Hang'em High".
So as a teen in the 70’s and early 80’s, I can honestly say Van Halen was an essential staple for parties. To me they represented pure fun!
Runnin’ with the Devil will be a great choice as this was on their debut album but please listen too Mean Street if you want to hear instrumental genius.
First time I heard this was walking back from class to my dorm room on the first warm day of spring 1984 and an undergrad was blasting "Jump" on their stereo out of their window at about 100db. Can't imagine how loud that was in their room - talk about an immersive experience.
Een fantastic dutch singer
The album, 1984, featuring JUMP, was the last VAN HALEN album featuring Roth, for some time. SAMMY HAGAR TOOK THE REINS OF LEAD SINGER FOR AWHILE!!
Van Halen was one of The Greatest Bands from the '80's! The Lead guitarist and synthesizer player Eddie Van Halen was the Greatest guitar Shredder master. The lead singer David Lee Roth was so athleticly limber and energetic because he had studied Martial Arts during that time. Alex Van Halen the brother of Eddie Van Halen was an Awesome drummer. Michael Anthony was an amazing Bass player for the band. Side note, "Eddie Van Halen designed all his own guitars". The album 1984 JUMP was one of the Greatest single from that time. RIP Eddie Van Halen. Rock On Van Halen!!! 🤘🤟✊🤙💥🔥
There are perhaps a dozen TOP frontmen in rock and metal….and I would put DLR among them; Robert Plant,( Led Zeppelin) Roger Daltry (The Who) Mick Jagger (Rolling Stones), David Coverdale, (Deep Purple, Whitesnake,) Freddie Mercury,(Queen) Bono, (U2) Bon Scott/Brian Johnson, (AC/DC) Steve Perry, (Journe), Steven Tyler (Aerosmith), Michael Hutchins (INXS)…….and David Lee Roth. It takes a powerful and and nimble voice, high energy, charisma and magnetism, swag, and being easy on the eyes doesn’t hurt…….the entire package, to front a top band. Some of these bands you’ve heard already, some you havent. Hopefully, you will get to sample all of them before you’re done.
VH >> CouLd You Do another VERSION of this with the VocaL ELIMINATOR AppLied ? 'ALways found it tough to ToLerate the Peroxide Parader's SchLock-Voice. Parts CaroL Channing / EtheL Merman / Louis Prima. This Tune with the Circus Music (keyboards) should Never have been. It was a Big Letdown when someone enabled VH to let him think that His Keyboard PLaying should be part of his Recordings. If You're the BEST & want Keys, go Hire the BEST.
What i love in this song apart from joyness and positiveness, is how everything changes after chorus when the guitar solo comes, this is really a well crafted masterpiece!..
This is a s*icide anthem. So not that joyful
This song was MAMMOTH!!! MTV was at it's peak, put this in heavy rotation, and the song shot to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, their biggest hit and only #1. The kicker is, this was the period when artists were spending a record breaking million dollars on videos (ala Michael Jacksons "Thriller") and Van Halen supposedly did this video for like $600 with a hand held cam! Love it.
I saw them live in may of 1995 as a supportingact for Bon Jovi, and to be honest, for my taste they COMPLETLEY outplayed Bon Jovi😊❤.Love them❤❤❤❤
I hope you guys are aware that Eddie Van Halen also played the guitar solo in the Michael Jackson song "Beat It" Also, this album came out in 1984, which was one of the greatest years for rock music in the 80s. You'll be amazed at how many great albums in music history came out in that year, not just rock, but all genres. This was David Lee Roth's last album with Van Halen. He went on to release his solo album, which featured an up and coming guitarist named Steve Vai. I would recommend listening to "Just Like Paradise" "Damn Good Times" "California Girls" and "Yankee Rose" David Lee Roth was replaced by Sammy Hagar, and that brought Van Halen much popularity.
Bi's & BarBelle, Enjoy your rxns! Van Halen is a Monster. The first (self-titled) album is one of the greatest hard rock albums of all times. Running with the Devil is the first track..., Live tracks are a must also, and the 81" Oakland show is a fav of many. The Van Halen incarnation (with Sammy Hagar) live album selection would be "Right Here, Right Now." Go beyond the radio friendly to find gems of the harder nature. Saw VH in 83' with a few (300K) friends at the US Festival produced by Steve Wozniak and Bill Graham. Amazing!!!!
You should finish off the trilogy of videos from this album and check out "Panama". The feel is right in between this and "Hot For Teacher". If you're interested in something... deeper, so to speak, check out "Right Now" from the album "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge".
My least favorite VH song 🤣 to me a throw away. VH was the bomb though I was a senior in 84 DeF Leppard, Journey, AC/DC, Guns N Roses, Quiet Riot omg so many awesome bands in the 80’s. Yes I’m a HUGE Elvis fan also he’s my first love but I’m an 80’s kid I rocked the 80’s!
Sammy Hagar (the Legend) couldn't surpass the DLR era. But when they premiered Sammy, with "Why Can't This Be Love" - - it was as good or better than Anything from the David Lee Roth era. pure fire. Gotta check it out.
Yes David Lee Roth the singer is like a 3rd or 4th or 5th degree black belt....is why he is very flexible and and can do KUCKS AND JUMP !!! Great job guys
Okay, B&B, let me make a fun selection for you. When David Lee Roth branched out to make a solo album, his guitar player was Steve Vai. Check out these two videos... "Yankee Rose" and "Just Like Paradise"... awesome tracks and videos !!!
Also guys, just giving "fair warning".....any Van Halen you react to after year 1985 will have a different lead singer (Sammy Hagar). The band had a different vibe with Sam on vocals. You have 2 VH era's. The Dave Era, and the Sam era.
Actually JUMP is about a suicide. Roth said he was listening to the radio about traffic in LA iirc backed up because a man was threatening to jump off a building. He said people below were yelling for him to jump and he wrote the main lyrics.
A couple of VH songs I don’t see reacted to as much are Ice Cream Man and Everybody Wants Some-both done with DLR still with VH. A few years ago DLR did an acoustic “sidewalk sessions” which you might enjoy.
Jump was Van Halen's first and only number one hit song, from 1984, the year and album name. Story is, that Eddie has the keyboard riff done in the late 70s or around 1981, and tried to get the song on their third, fourth and fifth studio albums. Producer Ted Templeman shunned it off, and Eddie fought to get it on their sixth release.
Good karma came kicking in 1983, when he did the guitar solo on Beat It, as a favor for Quincy Jones, and Michael Jackson loved it, taking it to number one. The year after, Jump went to number one, and held the spot for five weeks.
By far my favorite band. You guys definitely should check out "RIGHT NOW", a classic from the Sammy Hagar era ("Van Hagar" lol). :)
I was an 80's kid 100%. Born in 72. Van Halen was sooooooooooooooooooooooo very very popular!!!!!!!🔴🔴🔴❤❤❤❤❤
I highly recommend you checkout "Dreams." It was a HUGE hit in the 80s and is my all time favorite Van Halen song. "Pound Cake" is another fun song you should checkou.
Runnin with the Devil? Nice, but I would have sent you towards "Could this be Magic" after this one. An acoustic number.
Dave was and or is….very serious in karate. Decades…..also rock climbing. That’s why the flexibility etc. he worked out but not for size..like you said, flexibility etc.
Oh they have "a couple of fun songs" try "Ice Cream Man" This band is worth a serious interest of going into the depths of their rabbit hole. There will never be another Van Halen... well Van Hager, for those of you that understand that! RIP Eddie, you put your permanent mark in Rock! Your talent and genuine smile are tremendously missed
If you are looking for a great live performance I would suggest 1989’s There’s Only One Way To Rock from the Tokyo Dome. All out jam with dueling guitars.
This video was filmed in Eddie Van Halen’s racquetball court for $16,000.
'Running With the Devil', and 'Mean Streets' recommended. This song was after Eddie started adding keyboard. But they were a Party band.
Eddie Van Halen in on the guitar in the crazy tiger jacket. David Lee Roth is singing lead. The band has gone back & forth with him & Sammy Hagar as leads, over the years. David has one solo tune called 'Just a gigolo' which is pretty fun. They are babies in this video. Eddie died a couple years ago, sadly.
If you haven’t yet..Stranglehold by Ted Nugent..also Sammy Hagar with Van Halen- Don’t Tell Me What Love Can Do
This was on radio HOT when I was going to my 1st MARDI GRAS parade. It seemed like Every other song they played 'JUMP'
After hearing Jump, you NEED to review the Official Van Halen video for the song 'Panama'.
Try out late 70's / early 80's Van Halen - "Dance the Night Away" and "Beautiful Girls"
Hi B&B., Mr. David is competitive Rock Climber, hence all of his agility.. ♠W.G.
Dave's fitness has been training in kenjutsu since he was twelve years old, and also practices kenpō and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
The nostalgia is pulling hard today. Gen-X music rules - the soundtrack to our lives is the BEST! ❤
You really don’t know anything about rock n roll if you’ve never heard any good Eddie guitar solo……..hell to really get his influences find his fathers “video” Thank you for leaving us Wolfie. He’s fing hilarious
Well if you were surprised by this then you need to check out anything off the album 5150. This was the beginning of the VanHagar era. It’s another change of course in their music. That’s what is great about their music it was constantly evolving.
Ah memories. I remember being at a club here in Essex when this was playing, anyway after a few beers and then every jumping when they said JUMP, well one or two broken limbs later..... great stuff
Oh my heart💜! Diehard Van Halen fan here! Still rocking in my 60’s as loud as I can!
If you’re looking for live DLR Van Halen… so this is love, unchained, meanstreets. If you have time there are whole concerts from Montreal and Brazil
Definitely need to go back in time and hit Runnin' With the Devil, Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love, or Mean Street. Can't go wrong with any these, and if you think Eddie shreds in these first two songs...
David Lee Roth has a huge athletic background…. He is a world class rock climber, his solo album cover Skyscraper is an actual photo of him free climbing a cliff
Some of David Lee Roths solo work.

Yeah, wait to hear Van Halen 1.
Runnin’ With The Devil is the opening track is awesome. After that is Dean solo irruption which leads into you really help me. Van Halen is hard rock all the way you just listen to the radio players. But yeah, can’t wait to hear you guys play more vintage Van Halen with David Lee Roth at the vocals.
FYI, after this album Diamond David Lee Roth was out of the band, and Sammy Hagar joined. The Eruption guitar solo you reacted to was with Sammy.
I was there for the first video MTV ever played, Video killed the radio star. This video was played constantly and VH said they spent more in alcohol than it costs to film this video while they were filming lol. I also saw VH live from 79-81...
David Lee Roth has been studying martial arts since he was 12. He has earned belts in Kung Fu, Jeet Kune Do, and Karate, and has practiced sword-fighting for decades. If I'm not mistaken he has a home in Japan where he trains part of the year.
An all-time classic from my high school days! A suggestion for a future video... Thunderstruck by AC/DC
Panama live a must.
Mean streets.. a must
Good guess! The lyrics actually _were_ inspired by someone having the intention of jumping off a building and to their death! David Lee Roth must've decided to put a _positive_ spin on them, though 😊
Hey Guys, please do some Aretha Franklin. Please start with, Ain't no way, the recording not the live version. I really enjoy you two.
