You noticed right away just how wasted this guy was and still he played like that. 😎
The last trilly bit before Sammy says "Ladies and gentlemen..." and the band comes in, was from his guitar solo on Michael Jackson's "Beat It".

Edward Van Halen changed the entire rock guitar scene and turned it on it's ear with the original version of Eruption. It was a 1:42 guitar master piece and was less then 2:00 minute solo. He continued to change guitar playing until his death. R.I.P... His son Wolfgang will continue on from here.

I agree with you on Wolfgang man. He's a whole different flavor of rock talent... it's nice to see the van halen name will be carried on with high level talent but also in a whole new way. Wolf sounds very different than his father and uncle. And that in itself is beautiful... he's not just a clone. And IMHO I think he's a better drummer than Alex hahaha. From 1978-2015 Eddie would either add parts to it or take parts away.Never played it the same way.He experimented with different sounds he could get from it.He even built that guitar himself with various guitar parts

Listen to the album version, this live 'for the fans' version is basically an anthology of Eddies most famous guitar licks intertwined into the Eruption solo. On the album Eruption serves as the intro to their cover of the Kinks - You Really Got Me, it's shorter, tighter, and it is amazing, like people remember when they were the first time they heard Eruption (high school parking lot in my '68 firebird).

The first 5 Van Halen studio albums each have a short guitar interlude/solo by Eddie. The first and most popular is Eruption. This live clip is a mixture of those solos. Spanish Fly, Cathedral and Tora! Tora! Among them. EVH revolutionized guitar playing by introducing Rock to classical techniques like hammer-ons and pull-offs. RIP

It's hard to overstate Eddie's influence. When this first came out, every kid I knew who played guitar -- wanted to play THIS. And what's intresting is how much classical music is in this (Bach, mostly) and, at the same time, it's the ultimate in rock music (the swagger, the distortion, the tone and of course -- that shit-eating grin). He was one-of-a-kind!

Every van Halen album has some instrumental solo tracks where everyone has a chance to play around, and this was a live concert where he ripped out every single one of his to that time whilst blacked out drunk.
There were three singers total, the third only having one album and tour before being fired, and off and on the first and second have returned briefly, although the band had reunited with the original singer and fired the bassist to let Eddie's son Wolfgang play bass until Ed died. The drummer is his Brother Alex, and the singers were David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar, and Gary Cherone. The original bassist was Michael Anthony. The first albums with Diamond Dave are their own thing, Sammy's are Van Hagar, and I'm pretty much the only person who appreciates Van Halen 3 with the singer from Extreme as a necessary phase of their career. Call that one Stan Halen because Cherone was a huge fan as well as a rock star in his own right before joining.
They released 6 records with DLR the first time, 4 with Sammy, a best of with two new Dave songs and one newish Sammy song from the Twister soundtrack. VH3 happened, then eventually they released a record again with DLR that was largely based on unreleased old demos from their early days. As a fan it's all listenable but most people either prefer the showmanship of Dave or the love songs and politics of Sammy. Also, Sammy was always a vocal advocate of marijuana even back in the 80s and 90s. If you look up the discography the band spans decades and their sound never got stale. Even the deep cuts shine with cool sound ideas and top tier musicianship. Everyone has favorites and recommendations and most are the hits. I'll suggest Drop Dead Legs, Secrets, Big Bad Bill, and She's the Woman from Dave's catalogue. For Sammy, I'd recommend Feels So Good, The Inside, Seventh Seal, and In 'n' Out. From VH3 I'd recommend Dirty Water Dog or Fire in the Hole, plus the three new tracks on Best of Volume 1 are all fire. The two Dave tracks are some of the most overproduced yet technically spectacular songs they ever made.

You can practice 8 hours a day, 365 days a year, for decades and never approach the ability of these three men. They were born with something, a gift if you will, that is beyond dedicating yourself and practicing for hours.

You can call EVH a lot of things…a virtuoso, a genius, a savant…and people will always argue about who is/was the GOAT, but I can tell you that I’ve seen all of the major guitar “legends” over the past 45 years of attending concerts in the US and Europe with the exception of Randy Rhoads (RIP) and I can say without reservation that EVH was easily the most entertaining of all…again, everyone has their GOAT list and arguments, but for me Eddie was the best of the best. RIP Eddie…your talent was undeniable.

Great reaction!! I've seen this countless times, and it still amazes and engages me - RIP Eddie, a master at the axe!
Just so you're clear Polo - this solo wasn't just the song Eruption (which you should check in it's own right for context). This was no less than 3 other 'songs' Eddie has done, plus a bunch of other noodling. The first part when he's sitting down is a song called 316 (so named as it's the birthdate of his son Wolfgang, off the album For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge) - beautiful & calm ditty. Then it goes into a section of Eruption (most of the parts where the tapping technique is involved is from this). The section where he's controlling the volume knob to make he guitar sound like a violin is from a song called Cathedral (off Diver Down).
Yes, this is a self-indulgent showcase of most of what made Eddie great - his guitar pyrotechnics was game changing and genre defining! He may not have created all those techniques, but he sure as hell mastered them! Cheers.

"Man is plastered." Eddy Van Halen was a better guitar player while drunk and high then most of his contemporaries were while sober. He is one of the greatest, if not the greatest rock and roll guitarists of all time and legitimately changed the game and sound of rock when Van Halen released their first tracks back in the 70's. Nobody was playing the guitar in this fashion or making it sound this way at the time. His unique way of strumming, his picking style, his understanding and mastery of lesser used playing styles all combined to create magic.

An honest reaction is appreciated. Much of this exhibition of skill was based on classical composers music. And it’s more instructive for guitarists than general music lover’s playlists. Was he one of the guitar masters? Undeniably, yes.

FYI, this isn't "Eruption". It's his entire live solo from the "Live Without A Net" video. Eruption is one small part of it, originally on the first VH album from the 70s. He's actually combining several different solo pieces here, beginning with "316".

I wonder if the crowd would have been as excited to hear a gigantic pipe organ and Bach being played on it, because that is a generous portion of what this solo is. Maybe if the organist was smoking and looked cool. All that aside, EVH was a prodigy rooted in classical music. So talented. His son is carrying the legacy as best he can, God bless him.

The legend of Edward Van Halen (guitar/ keyboards) of Van Halen - one of the most inspiring guitarists of the 20th century 🤘🤘Inspired millions and set the scene for 80's rock and guitar heroics.
Edward 'Eddie' Van Halen and his older brother Alex Van Halen (drums) were children of a struggling jazz musician Jan Van Halen, who brought his family to the USA from the Netherlands and settled in Pasadena, California... While still kids in school, Eddie and Alex started playing music together; Eddie on drums and Alex on guitar... but they switched after Eddie showed more promise on guitar... Eddie was too broke to afford a new guitar, so he built his own guitar w/ parts of other discarded guitars - he called it 'Frankenstein' because it looked like it had been cobbled together... Eddie also took piano lessons, but he didn't have patience for sheet music and always played by ear.
Eddie and Alex Van Halen were still too young by the early 70's to play clubs or bars, so they performed under various names at school events or backyard parties... Eddie would rent a P.A. system so he could sing live... but by 1973, it made more sense to have the owner of the P.A. join the band as the lead singer - a Jewish kid named David Lee Roth, who had the family finances to put a band together and a space to rehearse at his dad's home.
When David Lee Roth joined, he suggested the band name Van Halen after recognizing the talent of Eddie Van Halen on guitar... he felt that it was a marquee name and would get people to come to their shows to see Eddie play... It was also apparent that Roth was not the best singer live, so Michael Anthony (bass) joined in 1974... he and Eddie would sing harmonies and backing vocals as Van Halen started making a name for themselves in the Hollywood rock scene. They would often play cover songs... but Eddie could not make Van Halen sound like the artists they were covering, but gave the band their own sound as they also started writing songs together.
Gene Simmons (bassist/ vocalist of Kiss) saw Van Halen perform at a club in 1976 and offered the band to record their demos, hoping for a label to sign them... However, all the labels in the disco era passed on Van Halen... It wasn't until 1977 that Warner Bros. Records gave them a shot and put them in the studio w/ producer Ted Templeman.
While recording the first Van Halen album, Eddie Van Halen did a usual 'warm-up' on guitar... playing this explosive guitar solo, and the engineers and producers were shocked - they recorded it immediately and it became the intro 'Eruption' (opening the cover song 'You really got me' ... originally by The Kinks) The first Van Halen was like a thunderbolt in the American rock scene and Eddie Van Halen's guitar techniques changed rock music forever... The album sold 10 million copies in the US as Van Halen opened for Black Sabbath in 1978 and stole the show every night. By 1979, Van Halen was headlining tours as 2nd album 'Van Halen II' was released... David Lee Roth became an acrobatic frontman on stage and took care of the visuals of performing, while Eddie Van Halen wrote the band's original music... Roth wanted Van Halen to play rock music that people could move and dance to.
After Van Halen's 6th album '1984'... which became another massive hit thanks to MTV and sold 10 million copies, the rift between David Lee Roth and the band was too big to ignore by 1985... Eddie was writing more songs on keyboards and Roth hated the idea. Unwilling to compromise, Van Halen shocked their fans that year that announcing their split w/ Roth...
In 1986, David Lee Roth launched a solo career w/ another guitar legend Steve Vai... Van Halen teamed up w/ veteran singer Sammy Hagar and saw their synth-heavy record '5150' in 1986 sell 6 million copies and debut at #1 on the US charts. However, after a successful decade and 4 studio albums w/ Hagar on vocals, Van Halen decided to part ways and attempted a reunion w/ David Lee Roth (whose solo career had stalled), but that proposition fell apart quickly.
Former Extreme vocalist Gary Cherone joined Van Halen as they released the 'Van Halen III' album in 1998... it was considered an Eddie Van Halen solo record because he played almost everything on the album, including drums. But the record was a commercial failure, and Cherone was out if Van Halen by 2000.
Van Halen did little after that... a brief reunion w/ Sammy Hagar in 2004... a reunion w/ David Lee Roth in 2007, but w/ Eddie's son Wolfgang Van Halen playing bass instead of Michael Anthony... They released only 1 album in 2012 ('A different kind of truth') and their last tour was in 2015... Edward Van Halen died in 2020 after a long battle w/ cancer (R.I.P)

Everyone under the sun has reacted to this one, which no doubt is a stellar testimony of his guitar prowess over the years. You would have been better served to have reacted to the original "Eruption" from their self titled debut album "Van Halen". It clocked in at 1:47sec. That is what the world first heard in 1978 and it immiediatly went Platinum. At that point no one had ever heard anything like this before. No one since Jimi Hendrix would revolutionize not only the playing of guitar, but how guitars were built, how guitar amplifiers were built. Whole industry trying to recreate his sound from that first album and other periods of his career. How's that for influential?! "I'm The One" is a no brainer for your next Van Halen song from that iconic debut album called Van Halen.

imagine that anybody would be capable of playing the guitar he did. Thanks for the reaction. If you want more Van Halen react to Panama!

I grew up a Van halen fan together with all the hard rock and heavy metal from the 80's and 90's. This solo still amazes me every time. He gets so many sounds out of that guitar that he built and continually modified himself. At times it sounds like a guitar, a synth, violins as he taps pulls, picks and beats the guitar. It almost wants to talk at times. Just mind blowing. He invented so many techniques and has been copied over and over. In this solo you hear so much from both eras of Van halen (with David Lee Roth and later with Sammy Hagar- shown here as a singer). There are even parts that sound like classical music on an electric guitar... Crazy good. He's self taught and plays so many instruments.
